Saddleworth's World Famous....
OFF THE RAILS COMEDY CLUB
If you weren't one of the lucky quarter million or so to see Phoenix Nights Live at the Manchester Arena then
Saturday 7th March gives you the chance to catch one of it's stars, Archie Kelly, up close and personal in the far
more intimate settings of Greenfield's Off The Rails Comedy Club! Archie played Kenny Senior in the TV series but
was an established club land comic and singer for many years before that. He also taught Spanish at a local
secondary school so no chewing and keep your chair on four legs not two! Archie will be joined by fellow TV
funny man Seymour Mace and full support as Stalybridge's West Hill School attempt to raise funds for a trip
to Uganda to help improve local communities and conserve wildlife.
Delph School will be reaping the benefits on Saturday 14th March when the reigning BBC New Comedy Award
Winner takes to the stage. Lost Voice Guy (aka Lee Ridley) was born with cerebral palsy meaning he cannot
speak. What most would see as a disadvantage is skilfully turned to lee's advantage with his excellent gag
writing skills and a small amount of pre-programmed electrickery. There is much more to Lost Voice Guy than
iPad gimmickery though and both fellow Geordie Ross Noble and Matt Lucas have nailed their colours firmly
to the LVG mast. Radio 4's Comedy Club presenter and podcast legend Ray Peacock makes his Greenfield
debut joined by Comedy Store regular Dave Williams.
Suzy Bennett
Sunday 29th March sees Off the rails host it's first ever Perrier award winner - madcap Canadian comic Phil Nichol;
"I've worked with Phil at a number of other venues but this the first time we've managed to get him to Saddleworth and I'm a little excited to say
the least" says promoter Rob Riley of one of the funniest men on the circuit. Phil started out with musical trio Corky And the Juice Pigs whose best
known song Eskimo, is still as funny twenty years later.
Archie Kelly
As there's no work on Monday, Easter Sunday's show (5th April) should sell out well in advance, much to the relief of Pennine Mencap who will be
the main beneficiaries. 2014 UK Circuit Comedian of the Year Gavin Webster joins former circus acrobat Martin Mor for an evening of genial lunacy.
'No limitations' is the ethos of Funky, Fitness and Fun who work with adults with additional needs. They are desperately trying to
raise money to replace their defunct mini bus so Saddleworth WI are holding their second comedy night at Off The Rails to do
just that! Suzy Bennett and XFM Manchester and Channel 4 regular Rob Rouse are just two of the acts on the bill. Saturday
18th April is the date for your diary.
And what better way to round off a tip top two months of laughter than with the undisputed king of one liners Gary Delaney,
who brings his extended national tour show 'Purist' to Off The Rails on Sunday 26th April? No high brow concepts or themes
just ninety minutes of sharp, well crafted gags form the Mock The Week regular. Tickets are already selling fast so don't delay!
Lost Voice Guy
Off the Rails Comedy Club shows are currently held in the upstairs function room at the Royal George, Manchester Rd.,
Greenfield OL3 7HX and tickets for all the above are available online at www.saddleworthcomedy.co.uk . Further information
please telephone 07874 152338.

Welcome back to the all new...
SWAN INN
Delph
The Swan Inn, Delph, reopened its doors on the 7th February following an extensive
refurbishment. On arrival guests received a warm welcome by enterprising new licensees
Karen Connor, Business partner Lisa Craig and son Simeon Connor with a cold glass of
bubbly. Entertainment was provided by talented duo, Blank Cheque, who got the guests up
and dancing with their saxophone and guitar.
The pub has been given a new lease of life, with a subtle variety of tartan upholstery, with wall
paper depicting a range of country scenes, exposed oak and a collection of historical pictures
of Delph. All this together with elegant curtains,
mirrors and three wood burning stoves makes for a
warming atmosphere which feels in keeping with the

What’s been going on at Oldham and
District Riding Club
By Lauren Jackson
The days are getting longer and the countryside looks alive with new growth. The last few months have
been particularly hard for horse owners, but let’s cast off the harshness of winter and replace it with the
freshness of spring. There’s a lot to look forward to at ODRC this year. Work is underway for a new toilet
block at Friezland – please support any fundraising as these new loo’s don’t come cheap! More news on
this next time.
Memberships are now being renewed and we are looking forward to a full and successful show season for 2015, starting with the Sponsored Ride
(fundraising for Friezland) on the 29th March followed by the following fixtures:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Member’s only novice 26th April,
Dressage shows 10th May, 28th June and 23rd August.
Ridden, In Hand and Working Hunter shows 24th May, 12th July and 6th September.
Show jumping shows 14th June, 26th July and 20th September.
Mini one day event 2nd August.
Family Horse Show 15th August.
It’s been proven that spending just half an hour in the saddle every week can boost a person’s sense of wellbeing. Our riding club supports this and
helps like-minded people to get together to make the most of this great sport at our fabulous local arena, Friezland. We run competitions in many
disciplines, fun rides, educational insights and social activities. This all goes to prove that riding is an excellent activity for people of all ages and
abilities. The excuse of ‘I’m too old’ or ‘I’m not good enough’ is definitely not the case.
We welcome new members and would love to see more spectators at our riding club events this year. Please pop down to one of our shows at Friezland
horse arena in Greenfield, you’ll be very welcome. For more details please visit our website www.odrc.co.uk.

The 180TH Anniversary of the building of the Deep Cutting,
Mottram in Longdendale...The Gateway to the Peak’s
By Mark Sheppard and Joyce Raven
Amid much controversy as to when the cutting was built, Sam Hill’s book ‘Bygone Stalybridge’
published in 1907 states; The “Deep Cutting” was made when the Manchester and
Saltersbrook turnpike road was formed, and completed about the year 1825-26, and it is said
occupied about 12 years in its construction. Many other books by local historians repeated
this information, and even a plaque in the cutting confirmed this. However, some years ago
while researching the district it soon became apparent that this was not the case. The
Turnpike Trust records, now deposited locally, had information showing parcels of land from
the Waggon and Horses, Matley, (the Sand mill tavern as it was known locally) down to the
Roe Cross vicinity being acquired by the trust many years after this date. In addition, an 1831
map of the district shows no mention of the cutting whatsoever.
Intrigued, we decided that a more thorough investigation was required, and after many months
of searching through the Manchester Newspapers, one article discovered was “ On Saturday
22nd December 1832, the Glossop mail coach on its return from Manchester was overturned
near the Roe Cross, owing to a heap of stones having been placed in the middle of the old
road, and which were driven on to, before the coach-man (owing to the darkness on the night)
was aware of the danger. Two of the outside passengers were seriously injured; all the others
escaped with slight contusions”.
Then Bingo! We hit the Jackpot! in the Manchester Courier dated Saturday November 24th
1834, the following advert appeared; “To Road Contractors to be let by ticket at the house of
William Ashton, at the Angel Inn, Mottram in Longdendale, on Thursday the 11th December
1834 at two o’ clock in the afternoon, the Cutting, Embanking, Forming, Draining, Walling,
Stoning, and otherwise completing a proposed improvement of the Manchester and
Saltersbrook Turnpike Road at and near Roe Cross. The length of the road to be made will be
1200-1300 yards, the entrance depth of the cutting about 38 feet and the extreme height of the
embankment about 29 feet. Plans, sections, and specifications may be seen by applying to
Joseph Harrison the Surveyor at Mottram in Longdendale, along with other information”.
Interestingly behind the Roe Cross on the Old Road was once an inn known as the Pack Horse,
and opposite the Roe Cross Inn, was a tavern known as the ‘Brown Cow’. These two buildings
still exist. The demolition of the Angel Inn, opposite the Crown Pole in the village, took place
around the late 1850’s.
In August 1843, four men were transported for fifteen years, for a burglary at Roe Cross that
they did not commit, due to evidence by a notorious character named James Swann, and corrupt police evidence, which caused a public outrage, and a petition for their
return. In 1844, people complained of the danger above the cutting, there being no guard or stone wall to prevent you falling down below onto the road, a great hazard
during darkness. In March 1854, the last mail coach passed through the cutting from Manchester to Glossop, the railway then being preferred.
However, it is the story of the Frog in the Wall during the construction of the cutting
that will amuse the reader. Work commenced in January 1835 (hence the 180th
Anniversary) and while this project was being undertaken a quarryman split open a
piece of rock and found entombed a body of a frog, and further the creature had left
the imprint of its body in the stone. Another account informs us that as the rock was
broken by a stonemason to be faced by Mathew Higginbottom, from Hollingworth,
the frog jumped out of its stone prison, and was soon caught, by Jacob Ollerenshaw,
a navvy from Gamesley.
The story has always been interesting to children, and over the years the stone has
been white-washed and the frog painted green. In 1956, Mr John Cassidy, a
historian from Ashton under Lyne received a glass case from Mr. C. Maxwell of
Southport, and inside was the dead Frog in cotton wool, given to him by his mother
shortly before her death in 1936 aged 85, a local girl from this area. Mr Ralph
Kinder, who resided at Fairview Cottage, nearby to the Dog and Partridge, had been
the “Whipper In” for the Stayley Hunt, and had died in April 1911, age 87. He worked
on the Deep Cutting as a boy, and remembered the first vehicle to pass through the
‘Cutting ‘ being a cart, conveying the body of Deborah Buckley of Staley, aged 86, a
relative, on its way to Mottram Church, when the Cutting finally opened on the 5th
March 1839. Although there have been a number of landslides over the years. One of
the first major road accidents was on Saturday 8th September 1906 when a young
girl, Kathleen Oliver aged 9, was killed by a chauffeur driven motor car as she ran
out of a yard at the Roe Cross. Today as you arrive at the Deep Cutting you are still
welcomed by a sight of natural beauty as you enter the gateway to the Peaks, and
don’t forget to look out for the little green frog, from days gone by.
This is how the deep cutting in Mottram looks today with the newly
opened Roe Cross Green gift shop, garden centre and cafe!

Out & About in Ripponden
Ripponden
A gateway to a feast of Yorkshire treasures!
By Chloe Shaw. photos by
Bob Collier
Ripponden is a quaint village and civil parish in West Yorkshire,
near Halifax, on the River Ryburn and was also recently voted
one of the best places to live in The Sunday Times. The area is of
archaeological importance due to the Roman Road which leads
over nearby Blackstone Edge, a ridge of millstone grit, and is
also rich in Bronze Age and Neolithic remains. The Oldham road
climbs south, offering dramatic views over Rishworth Moor of
the UK's highest motorway - the M62. The moor itself is an area
of outstanding natural beauty, home to a wealth of wildlife and a
series of ancient round barrow burial sites such as the 'Cat
Stones'. Ripponden is a mecca for walkers, with miles of
footpaths to take you from green valleys to the wild moors of
Rishworth. Halifax is an architectural delight with its Piece Hall,
Town Hall and Minster. The Eureka museum is a must for
children, whilst Shibden Hall is the grand home of Ann Lister,
whose life was documented in a film featured on the BBC. The
popular Hebden Bridge is a 15 minute drive away, and is a
thriving and vibrant Pennine Town with an alternative twist. As
you ample through Ripponden you may notice of the several
hand carved stone signs crafted by local firm B.D. Brooks
stonemasons. These include the Jubilee stone located in the centre of the village to celebrate the Queens jubilee, as well as the stone milestone, which has had the
lettering recarved after it had been removed during the war.
Ripponden offers a wide variety of top quality food and drinks. As Mother’s Day and Easter draws closer a lovely meal with loved ones to show your appreciation can be
found in one of these delectable pubs and restaurants. Nestled in a quiet corner of the Ripponden Conservation area by the ancient pack-horse bridge is possibly one of
Yorkshire’s best kept secrets – the Old Bridge Inn. Their efforts have been
recognised by many of the leading pub and food guides over the years. They are
currently featured in The Good Pub Guide; The AA Pub Guide; The Telegraph Quiet
Pint, and the CAMRA Good Pub Food Guide to name a few. If you like pork pies
Ripponden is the place for you as it hosts a Pork Pie Competition every year. This is
an opportunity for pie makers and enthusiastic pork pie fanciers to get together in
the famous Old Bridge Inn to enjoy fine Yorkshire Ale from Timothy Taylor's
brewery and savour fantastic fresh pies from all over the country accompanied by
wonderful mushy peas from the Old Bridge Inn kitchen.

The Fox Bar & Bistro has recently undergone a refurbishment so
the beautiful surroundings now match the eclectic menu that has
enough choice to satisfy whatever your tastes may be. The star
of the show is the wide range of fresh fish and seafood
selections. The whitebait starter is definitely a personal favourite
accompanied by a delicious garlic mayonnaise. All of the food is
freshly prepared from the best local ingredients available in
house and presented either in the relaxed down stairs dining
area or the elegant upper floor.
Nearby, a very warm welcome awaits you at The Booth Wood
Inn, a traditional country pub and restaurant in the adjoining
village of Rishworth. This stunning country retreat is
conveniently located just off the M62 as you drive towards
Ripponden. The Booth Wood Inn is proud to serve home-cooked
food and their menu comprises of traditional favourites, served
with a contemporary presentation. All of the food is freshly
prepared each day and in addition to their main menu they also
have a selection of daily specials which are changed frequently.
Again, with Mothers Day and the busy Easter weekend just
around the corner you may want to give them a call to book a
table.
If you’re looking for a relaxing weekend away, Ripponden offers
some of the best accommodation in Yorkshire. For an example
of this, try Over The Bridge. This is a detached, 18th century,
grade two listed cottage situated in the heart of Ripponden's
picturesque conservation village at the foot of an ancient
Packhorse bridge. The cottage overlooks the River Ryburn and
has its own fishing rights. Nearby is the 'oldest pub' (The Old
Bridge Inn) in Yorkshire and also St Bartholomew's Church.
There are some excellent walks to be enjoyed from the village as
well as many cycle routes. After a busy days exercise in the
area, you will certainly be in need of some well needed
refreshments.
Inspired by last year’s Tour de France Human Race brings us the
Tour de Yorkshire. Amateur cyclists can also take part in the
festivities, a mass participation bike ride which promises to be
one of the most challenging and popular sporting activities in
the British calendar. Stage 3 of the race speeds through
Ripponden on the 3rd May where thousands are expected to
take part. Welcome to Yorkshire is also organising a month long
Tour de Yorkshire Festival from 1 April to 3 May 2015 to
showcase the county’s rich and
diverse cultural offering. The
Yorkshire Festival, which
accompanied the Tour de France
Grand Départ, will be held in
2016. Welcome to Yorkshire will
shortly be contacting the Tour
Makers who supported the
Grand Départ of the Tour de
France in 2014 and recruiting a
smaller number of Tour Makers
to support the Tour de Yorkshire.
The race is being organised by
Welcome to Yorkshire and the
Amaury Sport Organisation, with
support from British Cycling and
local authorities throughout the
county.
Yes, Ripponden is without
question one of Yorkshire's
flagship villages. So dig out your
walking boots and go and
explore. A feast of treasures is
waiting to be discovered just a
stones throw away.

Out & About in Ripponden
The Fleece Countryside Inn
A must for all food lovers!
On a recent drive out to the charming village of 'Ripponden,' one of the locals we bumped into
suggested we dine at The Fleece Countryside Inn, located close by in Barkisland. Driving up to this
charming and impressive restaurant we could already take in the wonderful panoramic views.
Unfortunately as it was a cold Winters day we were unable to sit outside in the lovely garden area.
During the warmer weather this area would certainly be delight.
We were welcomed in by the friendly and professional staff, and seated next to a roaring fire which
was very much appreciated after coming in from the bitter cold wind. Whilst perusing the menu we
were served with our drinks, a nice glass of Chilean Chardonnay and a lovely crisp Czech beer.
There were two menus on offer, a 'Market Day' special menu as well an A La' Carte. Both menus
consisted of a wide range of dishes to choose from and hopefully enjoy. Starters included; Soup of
the Day, Chorizo Cassoulet with toasted bread, as well as Black Pudding Fritters with Dijon sauce.
The mouth watering main course options included the Fleece Crispy Battered Fish with homemade
chips and mushy peas, Chicken Supreme and Chorizo and Pea Risotto. Then for Dessert, a
tempting Sticky Toffee pudding or a Selection of Ice-Creams including an enticing honeycomb
flavour to name but a few.
As well as their ever popular Sunday Lunch menu, The Fleece Inn also serve up a full selection of
breakfast treats. Thursday is 'Grill Club' which allows you to choose any two grills and receive a
bottle of house wine for only £30.00, and Friday is 'Fish Friday.' For steak lovers they have a
delicious steak menu and for those with a fancy for fish there is a good selection of delights from
the sea for you to enjoy.
As you can no doubt imagine, it took us quite a while to decide on what to eat. In the end we opted
for the Fleece Yorkshire Deli Board which consisted of pork pie; chicken liver parfait; Dales ham;
Ribblesdale goat's cheese; piccalilli; rhubarb and home baked bread. This was a sharing platter and
we both loved it. For our main course I had Slow Cooked Lamb Henry, with buttery mash potato
and carrots complimented with a red wine jus. The lamb was very tender and cooked to perfection.
The jus was simply divine. My partner couldn't resist the fillet steak, a succulent middle barrel cut.
This was served with homemade chips, tomatoes, mushroom, and again the steak was cooked to perfection. The presentation of all our meals was first class, as was the
service.
Although we thought we could not manage another mouthful, when the dessert
menu was presented to us we simply could not resist the chocolate brownie with
vanilla ice-cream. However a child's portion to shared was ample after such a feast.
The Fleece have an extensive choice of beers, stouts, ciders, and splendid wines and
champagnes from around the world for you to enjoy. The Fleece Inn is the perfect
venue for a wedding reception or indeed any other function or celebration.
Conferences are also catered for, and if you would like a special treat for a loved
one, then

The Old Bridge Inn
700 years of time honoured tradition in the heart of
Ripponden
Like a fine wine some establishments simply become better with age. This can
be said for country pub and restaurant, The Old Bridge Inn which sits proudly
over the old packhorse bridge in the village of Ripponden. In fact little has
changed since the establishment first opened its doors 700 years ago, as this charming and welcoming hostelry
continues to gain much acclaim from new and existing customers.
Owners Tim and Lindsay Walker are your third generation hosts having been at the pub for the previous 32 years, after it
was run by Lindsay’s family before them. This friendly and knowledgeable couple, as well as their team, strive only to
provide customers with a warm welcome within a rustic and charming setting, whilst allowing them to enjoy a feast of
fine ales, wines and delicious home cooked food.
Your Hosts:
Tim and Lindsay Eaton Walker
Steeped in history, the earliest record of the Old Bridge Inn dates back to 1307, which means it is probably one of
Yorkshire's oldest hostelries. Situated next to the River Ryeburn, and on the main York to Chester Road, this charming
inn would have provided a warm welcome to any weary traveller, similar as it does today. On entering the pub it is
obvious the Tim and Lindsay care passionately about what they do, as they constantly strive to maintain and enhance the
ambience of this beautiful establishment. The interior is furnished with antiques and tasteful decor, whilst real fires burn
on colder days and chilling evenings to add to the welcoming atmosphere..
The cosy feel of the pub allows you and your party to fully relax and take advantage of their delicious lunchtime, evening and Sunday lunch menus. The weekday
lunchtime one has not changed for the past 50 years and hungry diners from far and wide come to sample this feast of home cooked treats. As well as homemade soup of
the day, you can then help yourself to a traditional Yorkshire buffet, with many different options available, from fresh salads, homemade cheese & onion pie, quiches,
cooked meats to Scotch eggs and much more besides. Then if that wasn't enough, you can then indulge in one of their mouth watering desserts, which includes a variety
of puddings, Yorkshire cheese board and coffee or tea. A tasty selection of sandwiches and other extras are also available.
Then in the evening and weekends the menu changes to offer a variety of traditional gastro pub dishes and contemporary classics created by their team of talented chefs.
Many of the dishes have been inspired by both local influence and from further a field, however all have been enhanced to incorporate a modern and vibrant twist. There is
certainly an obvious emphasis on using fresh locally sourced produce to create great dishes in a truly imaginative way. Dishes like Slow roast shoulder of lamb, honey
roast parsnips, buttered mash and red currant jus, as well as Steak, stout and mushroom pie served with braised red cabbage & new potatoes, and the Smoked haddock &
spinach pancakes topped with cream & parmesan should all manage to get your taste buds racing. The presentation is always guaranteed to be exceptional and the subtle
flavours delivered by every aspect of each dish will want you coming back for more.
The whole dining experience offered by The Old Bridge Inn is nothing short of
breath taking and a chance for you to sample something truly special. If you only try
a handful of new restaurants this 2015, then may we suggest this one. Part of the
restaurant can also be hired out

THE BLUE BRIDGE INDIAN RESTAURANT
Culinary excellence in the heart of Ripponden
Within the heart of the scenic village of Ripponden lies
a popular Indian restaurant with a glowing reputation.
This excellent family run business who has ties with
other successful restaurants in the area, has just
recently enjoyed its first birthday much to the delight of
its growing numbers of regular clientele.
Easily located in the centre of the village on Oldham
Road, The Blue Bridge Indian certainly catches the eye.
As you enter this modern restaurant you will be
welcomed by a friendly face who instantly caters for
your refreshment needs in the cosy lounge area, perfect
for enjoying some pre-meal drinks with friends and
family. The interior of the establishment is both stylish
and refreshing, which is complimented perfectly by the tranquil and ambient lighting. The ideal
setting for either a classy intimate dinner or a joyous party celebration, The Blue Bridge Indian
certainly ticks all the boxes on first impressions.
After some well needed refreshments and a chance to read the easy to use menu, we were kindly
shown to our table in the central part of the restaurant. The menu is brimming with traditional
favourites and mouth watering contemporary classics. As we hadn't had the pleasure of dining
here before, we were in adventurous mood, so armed with a glass of the excellent house wine, we
began to finalise our decisions about which dishes we were going to sample. When you go to any
respectable Indian restaurant it is important to taste as many aromatic flavours as possible to compliment your surroundings, so this night was going to be no exception.
With this in mind we started with the poppadom and pickle tray to get our taste buds ready for the feast which hopefully lay ahead.
The starter selection includes dishes like Meat Bilate Mirchi, King Prawn Puri, Fire Chicken on the bone, and the ever popular Mix Kebab (succulent chicken tikka, lamb
tikka and sheek kebab). As my friend had tried it before, he insisted on the Salmon Biran, whilst I opted for an old favourite, the Chicken Pakora. Both dishes were truly
magical and provided a great insight into the culinary adventure starting to unfold.
As with the starters, the selection of main courses is also impressive with an equal measure of Specials available including; Traditional, Tandoori, House, Seafood, Fusion
Goan and Signature dishes. They are also proud to serve up dishes for those who don't like it too spicy and a number of eye catching continental dishes. All the usual
suspects were on display including Bhuna, Dopiaza, Karahi, Balti, Biryani and
Vindaloo to name just a few. More adventurous dishes include the Fusion Goan
Akbari (cubes of chicken or lamb tikka cooked with exotic herbs and spices and
enhanced with onions and peppers in a stunning array of sauces and garnished with
coriander), Hyderabadi Gosht (a fiery hot lamb cooked in coconut milk and
hyderabadi flavoured herbs) or the Blue Bridge Salmon Special (Salmon grilled then
cooked in onions and peppers, garnished with spring onions and coriander. A dry
but exceptional dish accompanied with a Special Chef's sauce).

for MOTHERS DAY
& EASTER
WEEKEND
Again the friendly waiter was keen to make sure that we had made the right decision
and was helpful in our quest to decide. After slight deliberation we were confident
that we had our choices covered.
Firstly I was directed in the way
of the Chicken Tikka Saag
(spinach prepared with garlic,
ginger and tomatoes in a
medium spiced sauce and
elegantly garnished with
coriander), whilst my dining
companion was drawn to the
Lamb Tikka Afghani (succulent
cubes of lamb stir fried with
green chillies, ginger, garlic and
onions).
Both dishes were excellent in
both taste and appearance. A
feast of Nan bread and pilau rice
complemented out meal to
perfection, proving it to be an
evening of culinary excellence to
remember! We would highly
recommend it.
As well as having an excellent take away service, The Blue Bridge Indian has
some great special offers for you to enjoy. For further details check out the

SQUID LIPS ALPINE TOUR
Driven by a love of mountain life, a taste for extreme sport and a passion for music,
local band – SQUID LIPS – set off in their tired and rusting bus for a seven-week
tour of the Haute Savoie region, in the French Alps back on 12th January.
Following their return at the end of February, we caught up with the guys to see
how their wandering minstrel antics had panned out.
“Nobody knew this,” says singer and keyboard player, Kinsey “but at the time of our
departure we had three confirmed bookings for the entire tour. However, our high
risk strategy has paid off and the tour was a great success in so many ways.”
Kinsey’s partner in this project is Dan Preston (Bass & Vocals). The pair had been
gradually making contacts over the last few years, in the hope that touring a band
around Ski resorts would eventually be possible. Having only bagged a few bookings ahead of the season, they decided to go for it and brought in the other band
members to make up the line up. Drummers Phil Johnson & Danny Ward decided
to split the trip and take half each due to
other commitments; Guitarist Paddy
O’Hare climbed on board for the whole
tour to make up the four piece band of
Northern Troubadours.
Danny reflects on the experience; “This
has exceeded all my expectations and
been so amazing for all of us. Living in
those awe inspiring surroundings, playing good music in stunning venues and
meeting amazing people is like living the
dream for real. We played over 40
shows in 47 days and the response was
universally positive, with audiences who
engage from the first note. That is
everything a musician could wish for.
On top of that, this success allowed us
to engage in our passion for the sport
and the mountains.”
The guys playing at La Grand Ourse. Voted the 2nd best
panoramic view from an Alpine restaurant by The
Telegraph.
All the reports we have suggest that our local boys have really done us proud and
made their mark. The tour included providing music for a very prestigious wedding in Les Praz, alongside a huge selection of music venues throughout Argentiere,
Chamonix, Les Houches, Les Gets, Montriond and Morzine. Impressively, the band
already have offers for gigs, festivals and events which will now lead to a further
tour in the summer and a longer tour next winter.
Kinsey adds, “With a strong line up of musicians we were able to fit the bill for so
many different venues and this has been a big part of the story. We were also
Kinsey & Dan play out in the snow with Danny
Hammerton
lucky enough to have some incredible friends drop in for short spells, which further
embellished our shows. Dan Hammerton wowed crowds of up to 300 on Trumpet;
Dave Pack guested on drums; One of the UK’s finest guitarists Gareth Moulton joined
us for our last week along with Manchester’s very own Cole Page, who had venues
bouncing with his performance. We were also invited to guest with other bands in
the Alps and played for singer, Elisa Mason who lives and works in Morzine. As a
result of this, we now plan to develop the brand into Squid Lips Collective, with Danny
and myself as the hub and all of these great performers coming in turn. This idea has
been proposed to the venues and they are excited about the future tours as a result.
I’m so grateful to the proprietors of every venue for taking a chance on Squid Lips.”

IVF Journey – What happens during an IVF
cycle?
If you are thinking about investigating or starting fertility
treatment, you might wonder what is involved in a typical IVF
cycle.
Step 1 - Assessment and investigations
Finding out why you are having trouble conceiving is extremely important as that
will inform your treatment plan. We undertake a thorough fertility assessment for
both individuals to establish, where possible, what the issue is. We will discuss
your medical histories and lifestyle in detail and identify the best treatment to give
you the best chance of success.
Step 2 – Monitoring of your cycle
Key to any IVF cycle is understanding and monitoring the menstrual cycle. We will
monitor your cycle or provide you with drugs to take over your cycle.
Step 3 – Ovarian Stimulation and monitoring
The first stage is to give a course of drugs to help stimulate the ovaries to produce
more eggs than usual. The injections are usually done for approximately 12 – 14
days. As well as the injection to stimulate the production of eggs, another injection
is given to prevent the body from ovulating. During the stimulation period, a
number of pelvic ultrasounds are carried out to check how the ovaries are
responding. Once the team has identified that the eggs are ready for collection, a
special injection is given and egg collection booked for approx 36 hours
afterwards.
Step 4 – Egg Collection
The egg collection procedure involves coming to clinic and staying on our ward for
a few hours. It is performed under sedation so you will not be aware of the
procedure and will be completely comfortable.
Step 5 – Fertilisation and embryo development
Once all the eggs have been checked, they are either mixed with your partner’s
sperm (for IVF) or one single sperm is injected (for ICSI) and transferred to
incubators. By the next morning, the embryology team will tell you how many of
your eggs, if any, have fertilised. The embryos are then left to grow in the incubator
and our team will monitor them and keep you informed of their progress.
Depending on the quality and number of embryos, the team will decide when
embryo transfer should take place.
Step 6 – Embryo Transfer
Embryo transfer usually takes place on either day 2, 3 or 5 after egg collection,
depending on the quality and number of embryos. The embryo transfer procedure
is quite simple. You will be asked to come into the clinic, no anaesthetic is needed
and it is a bit like having a smear. You will be able to go home shortly afterwards.
Any embryos that aren’t transferred and are suitable can be frozen for future use.
Step 7 – Pregnancy Test
Approximately 2 weeks after embryo transfer, you will be able to do either a home
pregnancy test or you can come into the clinic for a blood test to see if you are
pregnant. If you are pregnant, an ultrasound scan will then be arranged for around
2 weeks later to see how the embryo is progressing and check for a heartbeat. If
everything is well, you then have a choice about whether you would like our
Obstetric team to look after your care or we can hand you back to your GP. If sadly
your treatment has not been successful, a review will take place with the Consultant
to look at what happened and what the next steps are.

Local Personal Trainer Gives the Miss Galaxy Universe Games a lift
Lewis Quinn, a 20 year old personal trainer and gym owner based in Mossley is the first northern based personal trainer to
be affiliated to Miss Galaxy Universe, Europe’s largest all-female fitness show. The Galaxy Show and The Galaxy Games are
held twice a year in the south of England near Gatwick airport making it easy for girls from all over Europe to reach, and its
key purpose is to get more women into a healthier lifestyle and for them to gain confidence whilst reach their fitness goal.
The shows founder Sarah Donohue says, "As the show has grown over the last four years, we have seen more girls from the
north of England take part, and with this came the need for us to offer assistance by way of experts in the fitness business
to these girls. We needed someone to be able to give good training and eating advice, as well as help girls build confidence,
and above all, be trustworthy, and after meeting Lewis last year whilst working out at his gym, I could see he worked well
with women and knew his stuff, so he was the perfect choice, and his training methods and facilities are fabulous.”
Lquinn Training was established in 2011 by a young 16 year old local boy who stuck to the idea that university isn't the only
way forward for young people of today. From an unhealthy child hood, Lewis was very much over weight and under active
until the age of 15 years old when he was introduced to the gym and rugby by a very motivational teacher. Lewis completed
his level 3 personal training course in between the term time whilst attending Rishworth School & sixth form when he was
just 16 years old. He went straight into work in between studies by securing
a job at his local leisure gym as a personal trainer and class instructor,
teaching over 50 attendees at a time.
Lewis already works with some of the galaxy girls on a one to one basis with
30 year old Victoria Hudson travelling from Barnsley twice a week to train
with him. Victoria is herself a personal trainer and a firm believer in to learn
you must be taught so I'm not afraid to learn from others. “I sell personal
training, it's what I believe in so why wouldn't I invest that in myself?" says Victoria. "I Entered Miss Galaxy Universe last year and got
the bug. This year working towards hopefully regaining my fitness champion title, and focusing on new skills with Lewis. Olympic lifts
and eating for performance not for aesthetics is a new approach for me.”
Victoria has changed her training plan completely deciding to stop focusing on how she looks and is now hoping to be the fittest she
ever been saying, "As a bi-product of being fit, you will look fit. And often women forget that being fit and healthy is far better than
dieting to be stick thin."
Lewis says, “I decided to open my own studio gym in 2012 as I found my self limited in commercial gyms as well as my clients
potential to get the most out of fitness. I designed a gym so against the grain that clients wouldn't just see the usual exercise and
fitness environment went they came to train. Now very much established by 2015 we run fitness classes including circuits, cross
training and spin which opens up more people to exercise. We have an excellent track record in our personal training with clients and
their results, working with a range of people from obese to fitness competitors.”
Well done ladies and good luck at the next event. For more information on Lewis Quinn, please visit www.lquinn-training.co.uk

Film Review
Bird is the Word!
By Mike Kemble
Well thank golly gosh March is upon us. I think I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), although it seems everyone else does too when I broach the subject in
conversation. Which is often it seems, between the New Year and end of February. It is however, refreshing to learn, that the most effective way of combating the long-darknights of winter and the little bit of sadness that creeps into our thoughts, is through a gentle dose of sunny delight. A trip over to Spain should be the prescribed treatment
for all, where a mild waft of low-lying heat can often reach the mid-to-late teens, and a wry smile can sneak back into view as the gloom of Monday mornings and all that is
briefly detained. Respite lies in the fact that February is kindly the shortest month of the year, and it’s also a time when the mighty battle for Oscars glory takes hold. When
you can take a trip to the cinema on a daily basis and still come-up short in terms of watching all the releases as they flood into the multiplexes up and down the county,
often getting a re-release if you no doubt missed them the first time they came around. So there you have it, if a trip to Spain is a little out of reach, at least you can appreciate
the escapism found in a darkly-lit room and soak-up the refreshingly awesome films that start to appear during the miserable months of winter.
And you really are spoilt for choice at this time of year. I’ve written about it before but if you STILL haven’t seen Boyhood, you really oughta. I’m gutted with Oscar and the
decision to award the best film and director awards to Birdman and Alejandro González Iñárritu respectively. Granted it’s a decent film though I have to say I could sort of
see the reason why I witnessed a number of people leaving a little earlier than the end as it’s not the easiest watch for some. Starring a reprieved Michael Keaton as a
previously iconic superhero who’s lost his star a good time ago, he places all his bets on a Broadway play that’s geared more towards his ego than anything else. The film
plays out like a stage show and I think it was Peter Bradshaw from the Guardian who commented on the fact that the voting members for the Oscars are part of an innercircle establishment, and this really is a film actor’s film. Of the 6,000 people who get to vote, 93 per cent are white, 70 per cent are male, and the average age of a voter is
63. Which may or may not reflect the fact that all 20 of the acting nominations where white.
As ‘Whitegate’ theories abound, you really can’t help but wonder why Selma never got a look in, or David Oyelowo who played the lead role in the film as Martin Luther King,
which surely must be one of the best acted roles this last year. In any case the films you’d do well to see, include the career-defining presence of Eddie Redmayne playing
Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything; a mesmerising turn by J. K. Simmons
in Whiplash; Julianne Moore in Still Alice. Citizenfour and its brilliant take on the
global infringement of our freedom and liberties; and the wonderful Pawel
Pawlikowski’s emotional powerhouse of a drama, Ida. There is some consolation for
Boyhood at least, in the fact that Patricia Arquette deservedly took the best supporting
@GradeAJewellery
actress award. It’s a real shame it didn’t win anymore however as I think Boyhood
will become one of the defining films of this decade, and Richard Linklater surely
must be viewed now as one of the best director’s of his generation. It’s a film of light
ry

and joy, and love and life. It has a spring in its step that’s a wonder to behold, and it’s

Now in Stock
Still Alice (6th March): Julianne Moore is outstanding as a renowned
linguistics professor who receives the devastating news that she has
Alzheimer's disease, in this heartbreaking and inspiring film about coming
to terms with living with dementia.
The Voices (20th March): Light-hearted laughter in this Ryan Reynolds
comedy, where he seemingly lives a normal life, apart from one day when
his pet dog and cat start talking to him as things go from the truly strange
to even more bizarre in this whacky Rom-Com.
John Wick (10th April): Could this be Keanu Reeves back on-form after
some monumental missteps of late as he plays an ex-hitman coming out
of retirement to track down the gangsters that took everything from him.
Force Majeure 'Turist' (10th April): Winner of the Jury Prize at last year’s
Cannes Film Festival. Tomas and his Swedish family take a skiing holiday
to the French Alps, and when frantic news of an incoming avalanche sends
everyone into a stricken-panic, Tomas makes a decision that will shake the
family’s world to its core, in this darkly-comic tale of a man slowly losing
his patriarchal grip from the actions he takes.

So why buy in Spain after all you have
read in the press? Torremendo Spanish
Property Sales owner Ian Gibson
explains why now is a great time to buy
your dream home in the sun....
"When we bought our apartment in
Spain 29 years ago it was quite
frightening as we knew nothing of what
the country was all about, let alone the
buying procedures involved. Now after
living in Spain for the past 16 years we realised the secret is finding out for yourself
who to trust and not totally believe what you read in the newspapers."
"After getting involved in the property business 15 years ago, I have had hundreds
of happy clients and have never spoken to one person who regretted what they did.
Either has a holiday home, rental potential or a permanent move in the future, it is
very important to speak to someone who knows the Spanish property market and
who has experience of living in the country."
Torremendo Spanish Properties is a newly formed company which comprises of
many years of experience living in REAL SPAIN. It is run by Ian Gibson (previously
the landlord of the Navigation Inn in Dobcross) and business partner Nicky Dick.
Both have vast experience of working and living in Spain and have an in depth
knowledge on the buying process of buying your dream home on the Costa Blanca.

how purchasing your dream home can be realised, then please give UK Sales

The all NEW...
SWANKY CANDLES
Now OPEN in Stalybridge
A revolution in candle design has blown the industry away as new
local business Swanky Candles aim to light up the homes of their
growing number of customers from their new shop on Melbourne
Street in the heart of Stalybridge.
What started out as a hobby for owner Amanda Toyn has suddenly
turned into a phenomenon with the launch of her exciting range of
wick-less candles. Amanda, a former retail worker, has perfected
her range of wick-less candles after spending the past few years
experimenting and perfecting her ideas. As a hollow fragranced
wax vessel the candles can be used with a tea light or powerful LED bulb which allows it to glow through
the wax, giving off the perfect mood lighting and an aroma which will last forever.
At Swanky Candles, all of their super fragranced wax luminaries are handmade by Amanda and the team
in Stalybridge using the finest fragrances, created by a nearby International company and a local wax
manufacturer. Even the dye is sourced in the North of England.
They are currently perfecting their product range to include hand decorated luminaries which in selected designs you can choose to use your favourite
fragranced tea lights. There is also a special selection of wicked candles to accommodate those who just love the traditional style of candle. There is
also a range of unusual designs for you to purchase including Buddha heads and skulls. Varieties of scents include mango, mint and fennel, Egyptian
cotton, Winter spice and cherry to name but a few are all available.
MAKE YOUR WEDDING AND EVENT SPECIAL WITH SAFE AMBIENT LIGHTING!
Swanky Candles handmade luminaries are made of translucent wax enabling the light to glow through and give out warm, ambient lighting which will
enhance any room. They can be used indoors or out and make a stunning
centerpiece for a table in a restaurant, hotel or wedding. They are perfect
for event décor, corporate gifts, home staging or interior design. They can
also be grouped together and make fantastic aisle decorations for
weddings and functions. The larger ones can be floor standing for
entrance halls or lounges. They are completely safe when used with a
powerful, submersible LED bulb.
The long term aim for Amanda and the Swanky Candles team is to move
into larger premises, as the popularity of the product range continues to
grow.
Don't forget Mothers Day is just around the corner, so a gift from Swanky
Candles would be just the ticket. Gift vouchers are also available, so loved
ones can pick their own life long candle.
Call into their new shop on Melbourne Street in Stalybridge today or go

Easy Easter Treats
By Philippa Reddish of Little Cake Corner
Have fun baking and decorating cakes this Easter with these quick and creative
ideas from Little Cake Corner. Children will love these Easter nests and everyone
will love the scrumptious chocolate cake.
First, for the chocolate cake recipe you will need:150g butter (unsalted)
300g caster sugar
3 eggs, beaten
250ml (9fl oz) milk
225 plain flour
1 pinch salt
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
50g cocoa powder
Pipe from the middle of the cake in a clockwise direction to create a nest. Fill with
either mini eggs or if you want them to have already hatched roll yellow sugar paste
into an egg shape. Add eyes with rolled balls or black sugar paste and cut a
diamond shape out of orange sugar paste and fold in half to create a beak. Stick
the eyes and beak on the yellow chickens with water or edible glue.
For the Buttercream:75g of plain chocolate
75g of milk chocolate
tsp of vanilla extract
150g unsalted butter
125g icing sugar
2 tsp of milk
For all equipment for this and other Easter projects come to our shop at 106
High Street, Lees, OL4 5DT. www.littlecakecorner.co.uk
Happy Easter love Little Cake Corner!
For Decoration:Mini eggs
Black, yellow and orange sugarpaste
Large star nozzle and piping bag
Beat the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and add the egg and milk, once mixed
together sift in the remaining ingredients. I use an electric whisk for this but a hand
whisk works just fine. Spoon in your mixture about half way into a bun case on a
tray and pop into the oven for about 15 mins on 180 degrees centigrade. Once
risen, remove from the over and leave to cool on a wire rack.
For the Chocolate butter cream topping mix the butter, vanilla extract and icing
sugar together in a bowl or preferably food mixer . Then melt the chocolate in a
bowl over the hob or in a microwave. Pour the chocolate into the butter cream and
add the milk, mix together (not for too long or it will become runny and you wont
be able to pipe it) and fill the thick and creamy mixture into a piping bag fitted with
a large star nozzle.

Ignite your imagination with Envy Fireplaces
Yorkshire is now home to a fireplace showroom like no other. Offering a unique take
in bespoke fireplace retail, Envy Fireplaces in Huddersfield prides itself on creating a
customer experience like no other.
After over ten years of running Easy Fireplaces, owner Chris Worsley realised that
there was a need for contemporary tailored fireplaces that was not being met in the
North. His answer was to open a new business that caters for people who expect the
highest standards when it comes to designing and furnishing their homes, but who
had found the fireplace market lacking. Chris said: “Your fireplace should be an
integral part of your home. Aesthetically and functionally, it should reflect the
owner’s personality, taste and sense of style, and meet their demands for efficiency
and usability.
Until now, it was virtually impossible to achieve this without spending a fortune.”
Chris and his team of consultants combine years of experience in fireplace design
with a huge range of modern fireplaces and surrounds from leading manufacturers
such as Michael Miller Collection, Infinity, Paragon, Dimplex Opti-V & Opti-Myst,
Vision Trimline, Legend & Nu Flame. Envy’s aim is to help its customers create a
uniquely beautiful and efficient focal point for its customers’ homes – a place where
they and their families can use and value for a lifetime.
With the help of its free Home Survey service, Envy intends to restore the fireplace to
its rightful place – at the epicentre family life. Chris continues: “Our mission is to
continue the tradition in a way that ensures the heart of the home is stylistically
relevant and personal to each and every one of our customers. Our range of
contemporary fireplaces is completely customisable to needs, design preferences and
tastes.”
