United Presbyterian News
JULY 2016
Guided by the Word of God, led by the Holy Spirit, and motivated by the
love of Christ and all his people, United Presbyterian Church, an intergenerational community, celebrates God’s glory by fostering Christian
growth.
Therefore, we value:

Inviting and welcoming fellowship

Bible-centered messages, music, and faith expressed through worship

Commitment to our community
STAND UP
On FATHER’S DAY, the men sang the familiar hymn “STAND UP, STAND UP FOR JESUS” but with new lyrics written by our own
choir director, Maggie Morrison. The final verse
goes like this:
“TAKE UP THE CROSS OF JESUS AND
WALK WITH HIM BY FAITH
LET TROUBLE, TRIAL AND HARDSHIP, DO
THEIR WORK OF GRACE.
GIVE PRAISE TO GOD AND GLORY, AND
SEEK HIS HOLY FACE
HIS PURPOSE TO ACCOMPLISH, HIS LIGHT
AND LOVE EMBRACE.”
As we enter this time of being without a
pastor, each of us must ask, “WHAT CAN I DO
TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR UPC?
WHAT GIFT(S) HAS GOD ENTRUSTED TO
ME FOR THE FURTHERANCE OF HIS KINGDOM IN GREENVILLE?”
ROMANS 12:6 TELLS US THAT “HAVING
GIFTS THAT DIFFER ACCORDING TO THE
GRACE GIVEN TO US, LET US USE
THEM”… No matter your condition, physical or
emotional, you can be a positive and productive
servant of GOD – knitting a lapghan, baking
bread, making a dessert, changing a light bulb,
fixing a door, installing a basketball goal, recycling cans, sharping pencils, writing a card and
sending it to someone who needs encouragement, or making a phone call just to connect
with another person. Or “heaven forbid,” going
to visit them!
It might be easier to “SIT DOWN” on your
hands but GOD and your church need you to
“STAND UP” in whatever way possible. The
next time you say “Someone should do that for
the church, you may be that SOMEONE!”
BE WATCHFUL, STAND FIRM IN YOUR
FAITH, BE COURAGEOUS, BE STRONG.
LET ALL THAT YOU DO BE DONE IN
LOVE. (1 COR 16: 13,14)
The Multisensory
Learning Center
(MLC) has been a part
of our church since
1982. It was founded
by Valarie Reynolds
(John Reynolds's
wife ) and Dr. Karen
Vickery.
Many of you who are new to the church may have
wondered what the MLC is all about. In this article and some that will follow I will attempt to explain what goes on up at our church Mon-Thurs
after school hours.
We currently have three Certified Academic
Language Therapists teaching students using a
specific method based on a program designed by
Scottish Rite Hospital of Dallas. This method is
called Alphabetic Phonics and it was primarily
developed to help students
who have dyslexia. However, it is an excellent
teaching method to help anyone of average intelligence who is struggling to learn to read by traditional classroom techniques. The program combines reading, spelling and cursive handwriting in
structured lessons. Students come for one hour a
day, four days a week and typically attend class
for 2 1/2 to 3 years to complete the curriculum. It
is not a tutorial program but a therapeutic program.
Over the 34 years the MLC has been in existence
hundreds of students have learned to read and
become successful in school. Imagine not being
able to learn to read, feeling you are a failure, becoming discouraged and thus having your success
in school impacted. Once a student comes to the
MLC and starts being successful it changes their
performance in school and improves their self esteem. There is no failure with this method of
teaching; when a student masters one level then
they move on to the next. Many have described
their child's experience at the MLC as life changing.
Our church has an established scholarship fund
that helps families who cannot afford the $400
per month fee (that is paid to each therapist).
Over the years we have helped many students's
families by paying this fee. The family always is
required to pay what they are able and many do
no require any scholarship funds to be used. Donations to the scholarship fund have been made
by individuals, civic clubs, church members and
as memorials. One family left a generous amount
in their will to the MLC. We are very blessed to
have this scholarship fund to help those individuals who need this method to learn.
The MLC is an outreach program for which our
church should be proud.
We are using our facility throughout the week to
help children and adults
learn and those of us who teach at the MLC are
proud that our center is housed in our beautiful
church. There is something very special about being in God's house when you are doing such work.
I will continue to try through future articles in
our newsletter to educate
the congregation about the center, the students,
our therapists and tell some of our success stories.
Stay tuned. Also, if you know of anyone who may
benefit from this program, please have them contact me.

Great Read
Good morning....
welcome to the United States of America!
Make sure you read to the end, that's where it gets really good!
Luke AFB is west of Phoenix
and is rapidly being surrounded by civilization that complains about the noise from the
base and its planes, forgetting
that it was there long before
they were... A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the
back. Apparently, an individual
who lives somewhere near
Luke AFB wrote the local paper
complaining about a group of F
-16s that disturbed his/her day
at the mall.
When that individual read the
response from a Luke AFB officer, it must have stung quite a
bit.
The complaint:
'Question of the day for Luke
Air Force Base:
Whom do we thank for the
morning air show? Last
Wednesday, at precisely 9:11
A.M, a tight formation of four F16 jets made a low pass over
Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine
our good fortune! Do the Tom
Cruise-wannabes feel we need
this wake-up call, or were they
trying to impress the cashiers
at Mervyn's early bird special?
Any response would be appreciated.
The response:
Regarding 'A wake-up call from
Luke's jets' On June 15, at precisely
9:12 a.m. , a perfectly timed fourship flyby of F-16s from the 63rd
Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force
Base flew over the grave of Capt.
Jeremy Fresques. Capt. Fresques
was an Air Force officer who was
previously stationed at Luke Air
Force Base and was killed in Iraq on
May 30, Memorial Day.
At 9 a.m. on June 15, his family and
friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the
loss of a husband, son and
friend. Based on the letter writer's
recount of the fly by, and because of
the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't
hear the 21-gun salute, the playing
of taps, or my words to the widow
and parents of Capt. Fresques as I
gave them their son's flag on behalf
of the President of the United States
and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand
the sacrifices they have endured.
A four-ship fly by is a display of
respect the Air Force gives to
those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs
seriously, and on June 15 what the
letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.
The letter writer asks, 'Whom do
we thank for the morning air
show'? The 56th Fighter Wing will
make the call for you, and forward
your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt Fresques, and thank
them for you, for it was in their
honor that my pilots flew the most
honorable formation of their lives.
Only 2 defining forces have ever
offered to die for you....Jesus
Christ and the American Soldier. One died for your soul, the
other for your freedom.
Lt. Col. Grant L. Rosensteel, Jr.
Love it! This has got to be one of
the greatest quotes of all time.

Electronic giving doesn’t take vacations
This summer, if you can’t make it to church
due to travel or other commitments, we
encourage you to automate your regular
donations. United Presbyterian Church
relies on the consistent financial support
of the congregation and electronic giving
offers an easy way to give on a recurring
basis. Simply visit www.upctx.org and
locate the donation link. Or, if you prefer,
pick up an auto-draft authorization for
in the office. We thank you for your
continued support!
