PRESBYTERIAN PRESS
July 2015
What’s more fun than a family gathering? Warts and all, most of us love our families, including our faith
family, very much and enjoy spending time with them.
That’s exactly the purpose of this year’s Mid-Summer Night’s Potluck Picnic, sponsored by the Board of
Deacons of Second Church. On Wednesday, July 29, we’ll gather in the cool comfort of the Helwig Fellowship Hall to enjoy good food from some of the city’s best cooks, members of our church family and
our own Linda Langston, who will produce her famous baked chicken. As good as we can count on the
food being, the highlight of the evening will be the warm fellowship we’ll share with old friends and new.
Please make plans now to attend this very special evening, which will begin at 5:30 and end at 7:00 PM.
Choose a dish or dessert you’d like to share, and prepare enough
for 8 servings, and when you hear from your neighborhood deacon, please let that person know how many people will join us
from your family.
John knox rocks!
Two amazing weeks at Marathon Camp at John Knox Center in Ten Mile,
TN, have been on the agenda of six of our youth this summer. In this beautiful setting, a ministry of the Presbytery of East Tennessee, our campers
have grown in faith, made new friends, and experienced new adventures.
Thank you Second Presbyterian!
It’s as simple as that! But the reward will be a long-remembered
evening in some of the best company you’ll ever enjoy. We can’t
wait to see you!

The Session is pleased to announce that Mrs. Diane Stocker has accepted our offer of the
Interim Pastor/Moderator of Session position, subject to approval by the Presbytery
Committee on Ministry (COM). The earliest starting date for the position would
be July 1st (retroactively) or July 15th, whichever the COM approves. We thank the
congregation for their patience while the Interim Committee performed its work.

Presbyterian Women hope that the congregation is having a wonderful summer.
Thanks to the generosity of the congregation, the amount of the Birthday Offering was $638.00, and
the luncheon proceeds were $156.09. The luncheon proceeds will fund various PW Mission projects
around the world.
The Presbyterian Women’s Coordinating Team’s Planning Meeting for 2015-2016 will be held on
Saturday, July 11 at noon. We will have a salad luncheon. All women in the church are welcome.
On Sunday, July 26, we will have a special offering for the Newton Child Development Center.
Envelopes will be provided. The Newton Child Development Center provides quality infant and child
care for ages 6 weeks to 3 years. Head Start has absorbed the program at Newton, effective June 1.
There is still a financial need as there are some expenses that Newton still has to pay.
Have a blessed month,
Teresa Robinson
PW Moderator
After being at several sites since its founding September
3, 1871, the Second Presbyterian Church congregation
held its first service on Sunday, November 15, 1891 in
our present sanctuary designed by noted architect
R.H. Hunt.
The congregation was “crowded to its utmost capacity,
fully 1000 persons.” The Rev. W.J. Trimble was pastor at
this time. The Rev. Dr. R.R. Sutherland of the Second
Presbyterian Church of Knoxville preached the dedicatory sermon after which an appeal was made for the funding of an organ. Pledges for $5,500 were raised in ten
minutes before the end of the service.
A Called Meeting of the congregation will
be held Sunday, July 12 immediately
following worship. The purpose of the
meeting is to elect an officer nominating
committee. Among the duties of the
Officer Nominating Committee (ONC) will
be to bring a slate of nominees for the
Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) to
the congregation for election. Members
will be receiving more information soon
about how they may submit suggestions
for PNC nominees to the ONC.
