Presbyterian Press More News From the Pews February 2015 Appeal for workers for Archives Room Message from Perry The story of Second Church reflects the story of downtown Chattanooga. Since the time of the founding members in 1871 and true to the traditions of the Presbyterian Church, records of the membership—its times, actions and growth—have been recorded. A number of years ago John and Roby McGuire contributed to and supported the designation of a room to house and preserve these records. Over time others have stepped forward to keep these records together and available for observation and study. Inconsistencies in leadership had taken its toll when Eleanore and Gilbert Lindsay worked tirelessly to bring this ‘treasure’ to the attention of the church membership. Two years ago Eleanore Lindsay, Elizabeth Sugita, and Norma Witherspoon applied for and received a grant from the PCUSA to digitize some of the records of the church. This work must be completed by the end of 2015. Within the past several months the Archives Room has been moved to a newly refurbished location and is in need of members who will rally to the support of this ongoing project. If you have an interest in the history of Chattanooga and Second Church and/or enjoy research or organizing materials, YOU ARE NEEDED! NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY, but expertise in this area will be highly treasured! Please contact Claire Broome in the church office if you would like to participate in this work. Your Christian Education Committee has purchased a one year subscription to The Thoughtful Christian for the church. This service offers materials in the Reformed tradition for study and teaching. There are over 600 studies which may be downloaded for use in our congregation - Sunday School classes, small groups, Presbyterian Women, Wonderful Wednesdays, and more! In addition, the TC offers hundreds of books, hot off the press and classic, for discounted prices. Everyone may look at the website (thethoughtfulchristian.com). If a download is desired, please contact Diane Stocker at [email protected]. Greetings Friends! The following is an excerpt from my new devotional book, Daily Encouragement from God, that will be coming out on Amazon and eBooks. Matthew 18:21–22 Then Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?” “No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven!” Have you ever had a hard time forgiving someone? Of course you have. When someone wrongs you, is it always required of you to forgive that person? The answer is “no.” If the person who wrongly treated you does not ask for your forgiveness, you are not required to forgive that person. Update your Telephone Directory But what if the person does ask for your forgiveness? Must you forgive that person? Absolutely. What if that person did something very bad to you? Must you still forgive that person? Absolutely. What if the person has wronged you repeatedly in the past? The person then comes to you asking for forgiveness. Must you forgive the person? Absolutely. How many times have I forgiven you? Brenda Carter 1107 Claremont Dr. Chattanooga, TN 37415 Kathryn Walker 7618 Gann Rd. You are required to forgive people who ask for your forgiveness. But does that mean you must forget every wrong violated against you? This would be unwise. It is your responsibility to protect others and yourself. Therefore, you should take measures to prevent this person from hurting you and others in the future. Hixson, TN 37343 On the New Additions shelf in the library: In the Spirit, Perry Robert E. Oh wait, as Christians every month is for love. Let’s let this be a reminder to “love our neighbor as ourselves” every day of the month. A Note From Linda I want to start with a big thank you to all our Sunday School teachers and workers. Thank you! We are growing. By the end of this month we will have all the Sunday School rooms completed for each age group in their very own space! As our nursery population grows we feel the need for helpers. Please if you are willing to assist, give me a call at 267-0541 or contact me anytime at church. We will need at least 2 workers per service (Sunday School and Worship). We are excited about our choir program for this coming year. Our first Wednesday night practice gave us an excellent beginning. As in the past we will still spend a part of our worship hour practicing our music. Included will be some basic music theory. Ask the kids what they learned!
