Commercial Solar is Smart Business
Our Insight
Solar Depot Commercial has been leading the
industry for over ten years in innovative solar
energy solutions. We’ve seen first-hand the impact
increasing electricity prices have had on the profit
margins of Australian businesses. Over the last five
years alone, the cost of power has increased at
almost four times the rate of inflation and is set to
keep rising.1
Two of the main factors which will continue to drive
up the cost of electricity are:
• The cost of new electricity infrastructure
The good news is that whilst energy costs have risen,
the price of Solar Power hardware has reduced. Solar
required to replace ageing infrastructure and
technology has seen a rapid acceleration in recent years
meet ever-increasing demand. (Australia
and this has resulted in low cost, high efficiency products
currently needs to invest at least $100 billion
with robust reliability coming to market.
over the next decade to achieve this.) 2
Generating your own power is now significantly cheaper
• Increased operating costs for energy
producers and retailers
than buying it from a power company.
As a business, you will also receive the benefits from
depreciation and GST claimback, making the entire
project a cash positive scenario in many cases and
fast paybacks with high return on investment are
commonplace.

“I got my start in the renewable energy industry back in 1991 as
a fresh-faced young sparky, servicing 50-foot wind turbines in
SA’s far north.”
A lifetime looking for a brighter way
It was hairy work. But even at that early stage,
renewable energy made sense to me. I believed
in it, and I wanted to be part of it.
In 1994 I diversified, getting my hands dirty as
a subby installing remote stand-alone solar power
systems for people on the land. The solar bug bit
me hard - I loved it - and in 1999 it bit even harder.
Australia’s first Photovaltaic Rebate Program
was introduced, giving rise to something our
country desperately needed - a viable domestic
connect-to-grid solar market. I didn’t hesitate.
That same year I launched my first business,
Solarshop, and it boomed.
Solar Depot founder Troy Ryan
(and Olive) at home in the
Adelaide Hills.
The dwelling is built into a
north-facing slope to maximise
solar efficiency, with the earth
over the roof providing outstanding
insulation, negating the need for
air conditioning. His power
is entirely provided by a Solar
Depot off-grid Solar Cube.
“Now looking forward I can see an energy market
turned on its head where solar power producers are a
very powerful part of it. Electricity gets dearer as Solar
gets cheaper and storage is just around the corner.
Early solar adopters who choose wisely will soon be
able to negotiate terms with energy providers in a 2
way market. We’ve seen technology changed the way
we deal with Aust Post and Telstra, electricity supply is
next…”
Four years later in 2003 I sold my share of
Solarshop and took some time to think about how I
might do things differently. Later that year I had the
answer.
I’d keep things small, I’d employ other locals who
not only had technical expertise, but practiced the
sustainable way of living I wanted to preach
(without preaching, of course!). We’d work only
with quality technology and avoid being tightly
bound to any brands.
And we’d make it a priority to help customers
identify ways to reduce their power use so that
the system they needed was as small and
cost-effective as possible.
The company Solar Depot was born and later in
2012 I added Bellingen Solar to our national
network of offices. The like minded business with
over 10 years of experience shared the same
philospohies that Solar Depot embraced.
In 2013 this became Solar Depot Bellingen and we
have continued to grow from strength to strength
developing a specific commercial arm to the
branch in 2014.
