Winter 2015 - Corning Meals on Wheels
Food For Thought December 2015 As I write to you today, it is the morning before Thanksgiving and Corning Meals on Wheels volunteers are here diligently working away in the kitchen. The volunteers New Volunteers are donating their time and talent preparing a traditional Gifts Galore! Thanksgiving dinner for the homebound and frail seniors Forever in our we serve. The chef and volunteers are pouring their hearts into today’s menu of roast turkey, dressing, gravy, sweet Share the Love potatoes, green bean casserole, carrot-raisin salad, and Tributes & Gifts freshly baked cranberry-orange bread. Lions Club The volunteer driver-visitor teams will be arriving shortly. They, too, are donating their time and resources (fuel, vehicle wear & tear) to ensure our elderly neighbors have a warm Helping Hands meal on this cold day before Thanksgiving. While the majority of our 14 delivery routes Recycling for Meals are in or close to town, many of the driver-visitor teams venture out to the far reaches of Letter to the Editor our service area. One team will be driving down unpaved roads in Lindley, another in Beaver Dams, another in Coopers Plains, another in Caton, and another in Hornby. They Dear Santa... will go on those routes knowing that, along with delivering much needed nutrition, they Wine Tasting may be the only person the homebound older adult sees and speaks with today. We will be delivering today’s meals to 113 homebound and frail seniors. We couldn’t provide for them today or throughout the year without the committed and dedicated effort of the ~150 volunteers currently active on the Meals on Wheels team. When we consider local pay rates for equivalent work, our volunteers donate just shy of $133,000 in labor each year. As generous and robust as that effort is, we are in need of additional help. If you are interested in helping in the kitchen or with deliveries, please call to learn more about the opportunities we have available. It takes resources beyond the volunteer effort to prepare and deliver the 52,000 plus meals we will serve this year. It takes funding to pay for the equipment, ingredients, packaging, insurance, rent, staff… We do receive a small subsidy from government sources; however, that public funding comprises only 15% of the funds needed to operate Corning MoW. We depend mainly on donations from those receiving the meals or their loved ones, and on the generosity of the community through individual donations, fundraisers, civic and church groups, and giving through local grant programs. As we consider our blessings this Thanksgiving, I know over 100 homebound and frail older adults in the greater Corning-Painted Post area who are giving thanks to the volunteers and supporters of Corning Meals on Wheels for providing meals, and so much more. You can help us continue to help them by making a donation today. Warmest Regards, David FOOD FOR THOUGHT Lewis, a WWII veteran who at 93 is legally blind, continues to live in his home thanks to Corning Meals on Wheels volunteers and generous donors like you. 2 2 3 3 4-5 6 6 6 7 7 7 CMoW HOLIDAY CLOSINGS December 25th January 1st Thank you to everyone who brought us fresh fruits & vegetables! Thanks also to the Market St. branch of Community Bank N.A. and to Brookdale Painted Post for volunteering to deliver a route once a month. If you are interested in your business adopting a route please give us a call! Bring some fresh energy to your work week while putting a smile on the faces of some grateful seniors in our area. Pictured at right are Jennifer Gardiner and Christy Kager of the Piper Insurance Agency. Christ Church Grant for Operations! We are very grateful to Christ Episcopal Church’s Mission Committee for granting us $2,500 to help fund operations! Special thanks also to CMoW volunteer and Christ Church member, Barbara Cook, for sponsoring our grant application. This very generous grant will buy groceries and packaging for 1,445 nutritious freshly made meals for the homebound and frail seniors in our area. Blizzard Bag Collection Our generous neighbors at Christ Church also collected items for our blizzard bags. Hopefully this winter won’t be as cold and snowy as last winter, but thanks in part to Christ Church, we’ll be ready for whatever winter weather comes our way. Proper Tools, Proper Nutrition We are participating in a sodium reduction program sponsored by the CDC and administered locally by the Steuben County Public Health dietitian, Wilma Stewart. In an effort to better help our chef and volunteers prepare fresh, non-processed foods, a Sodium Reduction in Communities Grant provided a new commercial grade food processor, cutting boards and knives. Pictured left, dietitian Wilma Stewart is presenting CMoW Chef Brian Rook with the new tools. Right, using the Robot Coupe food processor for the first time is Monday kitchen volunteer Sylvia Brown. Muffin Tins! Thank you to Gary McCaslin for fulfilling our wish from last winter’s newsletter! The commercial grade muffin tins are perfect for portioning the dietitian-approved individual serving sizes of our cakes and brownie desserts. Adding Some Cheer – Above left, volunteer Jean Wosinski is packing lunches in bags decorated by students in the BOCES ACCESS program. Above right, volunteer Tina Richards is packing lunches in bags decorated by All Saints Academy Girl Scout Troop 41362. Many thanks to all involved! Aug. 30, 1930-Feb. 22, 2015 We at Corning Meals on Wheels, along with Meals on Wheels of Chemung County, are partnering with Simmons Rockwell Subaru this holiday season to help our homebound & frail senior neighbors in need. During this year’s Share the Love event, for every new Subaru sold or leased between Nov 19th and Jan 2nd, Subaru of America will donate $250 to the customer's choice of four national level charities, including the Meals on Wheels America. As Subaru Share the Love event partners, our local Meals on Wheels programs are eligible to compete for Share the Love grants from Meals on Wheels America! Last year, thanks to the support of community members like you, our Share the Love stocking stuffer effort helped us earn the top prize nationwide for Meals on Wheels programs with budgets of under one million dollars. Last year’s Share the Love grant funded over 1,800 meals or two meals per day for five homebound older adults for an entire year. We couldn’t have earned last year’s top prize without the support of our community. Let’s win this again in 2015 for your senior neighbors in need! Bring your used printer cartridges, tablets, and cell phones (ANY condition) into our office or the UPS store and help us to raise money to feed the hungry and recycle at the same time!! Students at Tuscarora Elementary in Addison made two-sided placemats for our seniors. One side is Thanksgiving themed and the other side is Christmas themed. Thank you to Treu Office Supply and The UPS Store for collecting and bringing us ink and toner cartridges! Eye Glass, Hearing Aids, and Battery Collection The Lions Club is a generous donor to our program. The glasses are collected and sent to developing countries where they are needed the most. The hearing aids are refurbished and recycled locally and are available to those individuals in need. Please bring in any unused glasses or hearing aids to us, and we will pass them along to the Lions Club. The Corning Lions Club donated Thanksgiving gift bags of fruit for our seniors. Volunteers delivered the gift bags along with the daily meals on Nov 24th. Pictured L-R, Diane White, Pat Murphy, Donna Peck, Gail Cordes, John Geis, and Walt Murphy We’re coming up on our 50th anniversary! Judy Quattrone, a faithful delivery volunteer (and singer of the Lucky Ducks band) recently retired from Meals on Wheels to go on to new adventures. Fifty years ago, Penny Rochester and friends at Christ Episcopal Church recognized a major need in our community. To meet that need, they formed Corning Meals on Wheels as a program of the Corning Vicinity Council of Churches. On March 7, 1966, six shut-ins of the Corning area received deliveries of a hot lunch and cold supper. Everything from cooking to paperwork was done in the kitchen at Christ Church. In 1979, Corning Meals on Wheels formed its own non-profit corporation. The initial directors of the Corporation were Elizabeth M. (Penny) Rochester, Delphine Pierri, Edith Treinin, Mary Heermans, Richard Wheeler, Phyllis Bruielly, Maureen Heatley, Marjorie Lobdell, Mabel Schmarder, Catherine Hoxie, and Louise Maloney. While much has changed, thanks to the generosity of our volunteers and financial supports, we continue to serve the community in the tradition of our founders. FOOD FOR THOUGHT PAGE 6 Our Wish List: A four drawer metal filing cabinet for the office. A new soup pot kettle warmer with a hinged lid to serve the soup for our volunteers. 22nd Anniversary Charity Wine Tasting Event. Thanks to Bottles & Corks and to everyone who stopped in to support by trying and buying some great wines. The event raised $519, enough to provide 125 hot and nutritious meals for your senior neighbors in need!
