When Dr. Walter Hoffmann and his two sons, Thomas and Martin Hoffmann, founded Hoffmann GmbH of Bruchsal, Germany in 1990,
exceeding customers‘ expectations with every machine they built was their top priority. Initially, their newly founded business
concentrated on a variety of technological solutions for woodworkers but soon after the founding of the company, a major milestone
was reached: The development of the HOFFMANN DOVETAIL KEY.
The result of several years of development, the Keys are four-dimensional fasteners in the shape of a double dovetail, with obliquely
converging ribbed inner surfaces. This unique design allows the Keys to draw two work pieces together for a tight and permanent joint.
In addition to Dovetail Keys, which are offered in a variety of sizes, materials, colors and special shapes, Hoffmann also manufactures
a wide range of specialized equipment to process parts for Dovetail Key joints. From small entry-level machines for Do-it-Yourselfers
and hobbyists, to medium sized machines for custom woodworking shops all the way to custom-made industrial cutting and joining
solutions, Hoffmann GmbH designs and builds everything at their facility in Bruchsal in southwestern Germany.
To better serve a rapidly growing customer base in the US, Canada and Mexico, Hoffmann Machine Company, Inc. was founded in late
1990 on Long Island, NY. After 15 years of growth and expansion, the company was relocated to a more geographically centralized
location in western North Carolina in the summer of 2005.
A spacious warehouse is stocked with all standard Hoffmann machines and an extensive supply of spare parts, accessories and
Hoffmann Dovetail Keys are on hand at all times. Our factory trained technicians and customer service center are here to offer
exceptional service, before and after the sale.
The premises on which the company was founded many years ago are still our top priority today

Simply Brilliant – Brilliantly Simple
Timeless Design
The dovetail shape is a proven and timeless design – a classic feature used in mechanical engineering and woodworking for hundreds of years. The
precise, double dovetail shape of the Key and its ridged sides guarantee a snug fit and positive guidance when driven into the routed slots. As the
Key is inserted, the workpieces are drawn together, creating a tight, perfectly aligned and permanent joint without the need for clamps, staples or
other fastening devices. Fast – Exact – Reliable.

Mitered parts with any angle, as well as straight or butt joints, end-to-end joints
and even difficult to assemble compound miters can be joined.
Colors and Materials
Standard Hoffmann Keys are made of a mediumbrown polymer designed to blend in well in most
applications. Different colors, shapes and sizes
are available for customer specific applications.

Fast and Reliable Assembly even with Difficult Joints
Hoffmann Dovetail Keys provide a fast, exact and reliable way of joining wood, whether on
a large production scale or in a small custom shop. The double-dovetail shape and ribbed,
sloped sides guarantee strong, tight joints every time. Every Key has a rounded end to aid
in starting the insertion process and no special tools are required.
In fact, one of the main advantages is the fact that the person assembling the parts cannot
change the alignment or tightness of the resulting connection, a major benefit not only in
shop assembly, but also when shipping RTA products. A hammer is all that’s needed to
create perfect joints every time.

Hoffmann Dovetail Keys are extremely versatile, with lengths ranging from 1/4” - 4” in
different colors and materials. For every joint, for every application, for every
environment we have the perfect Dovetail Key..

Blind dovetail keyways are routed in the back of the material, in the adjoining faces of the
two parts. The pieces are set together, a Dovetail Key is inserted and - that’s it!
Applying glue in the joint is optional but recommended and the assembled joint can be
handled immediately without waiting for the glue to set.

A comprehensive range from 1/4" up to 4" long.
Hoffmann Keys are available in four different sizes, designated W-1, W-2, W-3 and W-4, with W-2 being the most popular size for general woodworking applications. Each size is offered in a
range of lengths, starting with 1/4” in W-1 and W-2 (for moulding as thin as 5/16”) and ending with 4” long Keys in W-3 and W-4 for heavy post-and-beam construction. Special sizes,
lengths and colors can be produced to meet our customers’ requirements.

White Keys are produced for prefinished products such as plantation shutters, exterior building trim, PVC door and windows
casing, etc. White W-2 and W-3 Keys in different lengths are available from stock.
Specifically for the production of mitered cabinet doors and other applications where the Keys are visible in the finished
product, we offer plastic Keys in different brown shades. Our wood-match Keys are available in sizes W2 – 5/8” (for ¾” thick
stock) and W2 – 7/8” (for 1” thick stock) in the following colors: Light Maple, Maple, Cherry, Walnut, Dark Walnut and Black.
Dovetail Keys in other sizes and over 200 different colors can be produced as special orders.
Solid wood Keys are stocked in maple, oak, cherry, mahogany, walnut and wenge'.

Proper Keyway
Adjustment
The ideal router bit position
The ideal setting for the installed router bit is preset at the factory and corresponds to the included
set-up jig. This bit position will assure optimum
joint strength in a wide variety of materials and
profiles.
To reduce Key tension
Reducing the projection of the router bit (as
measured from the back fence) by approx. 0.2mm
will reduce pressure but also create a weaker joint.
To increase Key tension
Increasing the projection of the router bit (as
measured from the back fence) by approx. 0.2mm
will increase pressure but also increase the chance
for splitting the material when inserting a Key.

Fox Decking Keys
The warm, natural feel of a solid wood surface under bare feet connects us with nature in a way few other materials
can. The FoX Decking Key, a multifunctional, 100% waterproof connector, opens a whole new range of possibilities
in creating outdoor living spaces. FoX, the innovative decking board connector, is installed without the need for any
tools. Inserted by hand in the pre-routed keyways, the natural rubber connectors are quickly set and the boards are
connected by lightly pushing down with both hands. Special Edge Keys and Spacer Discs are available for the
perimeter boards to assure full support of the decking material along the edges.
Deck boards can be installed in a variety of different patterns, including running bond, herring bone, random,
straight line, etc. Depending on the desired look, the gap width between the boards can also be varied by simply
adjusting the router bit on the machine.
With FoX Decking Keys patios, decks and pool surrounds can be constructed with a variety of traditional and modern
materials, including softwoods such as larch, heart pine, cedar, cypress, redwood, and hardwoods species including
white oak, locust, mahogany, ipè, teak and various other tropical hardwoods. Composite deck boards available from
many different manufacturers can be joined with FoX Keys as well.
The material thickness can range from 7/8” – 1 1/4”, the board width may range from 2” - 6”.
Installation - Quick and Easy
Assembling the boards on site is simple and
quick – much like a board game for children
- and is accomplished in record time.
No cutting, trimming or fitting is necessary – all pre-cut parts fit into place perfectly. If the deck later requires cleaning or even refinishing,
the boards can be disassembled with the same ease. Once the FoX Keys are removed, the boards can be cleaned and if necessary sanded and
refinished before being reinstalled. Damaged or discolored sections, for example boards beneath large flower pots, can be replaced quickly
without the need to dismantle the entire floor.

Entry level, hand-held dovetail routing machine to rout a single dovetail keyway. For

The machine can be used in two different modes of operation:
1. Hand-held operation - The hand-held machine is placed on the workpiece to rout
dovetail keyways. 2. Stationary operation - The inverted machine is mounted to a
workbench with screws or clamps.
After locating the keyway position, the machine is switched on and the keyway is routed
into the material. The maximum router travel is 2 3/8”. The eXess model is designed for
Do-it-yourselfers and smaller professional woodworking shops and is also ideal for onsite and installation work. Please note that beaded face-frame moulding cannot be
joined with this model.
Function
The material is placed on the machine table and
positioned either with the center fence plate or
with the left and right hand inside corner fences.
A foot-pedal is pressed to activate the pneumatic
material clamps. The motor is started manually and
the handle above the motor is used to move the
motor carriage horizontally either to the left or
right hand side. A horizontal dovetail keyway is
routed; the motor is returned to the center “home”
position, switched off and the material removed.

Pneumatic Dovetail Routing Machine
Production-duty, freestanding dovetail routing machine with solid cast
aluminum table and large work surface at comfortable working height.
Equipped with two heavy-duty router motors connected with timing belts to
high-speed gear heads. Router bit spacing is operator adjustable from 1 1/4”
(32mm) to 4” (100mm) for utmost versatility.
Function
The keyway location is adjusted by positioning the guided center fence plate
on the machine table. The distance between the router bits is adjusted with
a hand wheel; the dimension is displayed on a digital counter.

Versatile, numerically controlled routing and drilling machine for the production of frame
and sash joints in windows and doors, overhead glazing systems, curtain walls,
sunrooms, conservatories as well as handrails, custom trim moulding and other larger
dimension stock. Dovetail keyways are routed and dowel holes are drilled in one
machining cycle. Keyways can be routed from left to right, right to left, bottom to top
and top to bottom or any combination thereof. Dowel hole locations are programmable
across a wide range of parameters. Miter joints from 0 – 67.5 degrees as well as 90
degree square joints can be processed with ease – custom fence plates and fixtures are
available per customers’ requirements.

All relevant data is entered either directly on a color touch-screen or downloaded via USB
port. Up to 100 different routing and drilling programs can be saved for quick retrieval.

Production Double Miter Saw with Dovetail Routing Stations
The MS35SF Double Miter Saw is designed to simultaneously cut a left and right hand miter with each
machining cycle. Upon cutting the miters, the saw blades retract and the router carriage moves
upward routing one or two dovetail keyways in the mitered ends. The heavy-duty design of the saw
heads and the routing carriage, precision machined components as well as the use of industrial
quality carbide tipped saw blades assures perfect cuts with no burrs or tear out, even on difficult to
process material such as foil or paper wrapped MDF moulding. The location of each keyway as well as
the routing height is fully adjustable to suit a wide range of applications. In addition, the
MS35SF can also be used as a production double miter saw for wood, non-ferrous
metals and plastics by switching off the routing operation.

Production Double Miter Saw
The MS35 Double Miter Saw is designed to simultaneously cut a left and right hand miter with each machining
cycle. Accurate, repeatable miter cuts are achieved in a variety of materials, including hard and softwoods,
wood-related materials (MDF, plywood, particleboard), plastics and non-ferrous metals such as aluminum.
The heavy-duty design of the saw heads and precision machined components as well as the use of industrial
quality carbide tipped saw blades assures perfect cuts with no burrs or tear out. The ideal double miter saw
for small and large shops when accurate and efficient miter cutting is required.
Function

Automatic Length Stop System
Designed and manufactured by Hoffmann in Germany, the ELA-2 automatic
length stop system is the ideal upgrade to increase efficiency on MS35 and
MS35SF double miter saws. The universal design and intuitive controller
allows for quick installation on other equipment such as line drills, routing
machines, cut-off saws, etc. as well. Sealed, precision linear bearings assure
repeat accuracy, long life and low maintenance. Ball bearing material rollers
are recessed in the steel table surface, with gaps between rollers closed to
reduce pinching points. Heavy, 1/8” thick steel top for long-term rigidity
features baked-on industrial finish and adjustable steel support legs.
Optional equipment
Radio-frequency length measuring gauge, features 30x30mm lightweight
aluminum extrusion for all day handling, with digital display for immediate
visual proof of measured dimension. Features RF transmittal of measured
dimension to ELA-2 with the push of a button.

The numerically controlled MX 5 NC is the perfect choice for many production environments
including furniture and cabinet production, plantation shutter manufacturing, window and door

The backbone of the machine is a heavy-duty steel base frame with precision-ground mounting
surfaces. The right hand saw/routing station is equipped with sealed linear bearing carriages for

The Hoffmann Beaded Face Frame System offers cabinet and millwork shops of all sizes a fast, precise and efficient way to manufacture beaded face frames; whether it’s one or one hundred
frames per job. Starting with beaded moulding, the stiles are notched and the rails are coped on fixed-blade, guillotine style notching machines. For a standard stile-rail connection, this
operation takes about 5 seconds with our manual notching machine (the automatic model is even faster!). A second step takes place on Hoffmann dovetail routing machines equipped with
special fixtures for beaded material. Dovetail keyways are routed in all mating parts and the frames are assembled by simply applying some glue and inserting Dovetail Keys. No large clamping
tables or bar clamps are required, the frames can be sanded and finished immediately upon assembly. The notching machines are sold complete with table extensions, fence rails, flip-stops as
well as tooling and a detailed manual. The routing machines are set-up with a complete fixture set to process stiles and rails, but can also be used to process regular miter joints, compound
miter joints and butt joints. Solid carbide dovetail bits are installed and the machines are shipped ready for operation.

FACE-FRAME NOTCHING MACHINES
A cabinet with a beaded face frame immediately conveys a high level of quality and craftsmanship. Precisely machined joints and accurately fitted inset doors and drawers elevate even the
simplest, single door design and distinctly set it apart from common overlay-door cabinets. Architects, Designers and Consumers have rediscovered this style and consequently, demand for
beaded face-frame cabinets is on the rise.
Notched joints in beaded face-frames are difficult to produce with consistent accuracy because three surfaces must meet perfectly for a tight joint. MORSO notching machines address this
problem by using three fixed knives; two side knives set a 45° angle and one nose knife, set parallel to the moulding. Changing the nose knife (available from 1/4” -1” wide) or sharpening
the knives will never reduce the notch dimension or change the cutting angles – the machines produce consistent results even after many years of use.
The face-frame fixture kit installed on Hoffmann routing machines will not interfere with the miter joining operation of the machine. Locator blocks are used position the square stops when
processing beaded moulding; to produce a miter joint the square stops are removed and the include center fence plate is installed in less than a minute.

Precision Power Planer for Flush-Trimming of Solid Wood Edges
The BH-556 hand-held power planer is designed specifically for flush trimming of solid wood edges, a process often tackled
with a combination of routers, belt sanders and hand planes, with less than satisfactory results.
Typical applications in a woodworking shop include

Manufactured in Switzerland, the machine features an innovative self-locking blade
adjustment in 4/1000" (1/10mm) increments. Once set, the setting remains in
place until changed by the operator, eliminating the chance for inadvertent
damage to the workpiece. Solid hard and softwood edges as well as veneer
and laminate edgebanding is trimmed in a single pass; edges wider than
2 1/4" are planed in multiple passes.
Safety Features
The patented, self-closing safety head guard is made of steel for years
of reliable protection. The spring loaded design closes the guard as soon

Accessories
A sturdy knob mounted on top of the motor
casting is used to adjust the depth of cut. A
ratcheting adjustment screw provides feedback to
the user; every “click” moves the base plate
precisely 4/1000”. The screw is spring-loaded and
self-locking to eliminate inadvertent changes.
The design of the blade drum guard assures safety
and ease of use. The steel guard is spring-loaded
and covers the whole underside of the blade drum.
Upon lifting the machine off the work surface, the
guard pivots forward and covers the cutter head
completely, allowing the machine to safely coast
to a standstill.
On the underside the cast-aluminum base plate is
precision machined and finished with a powder
coating containing PTFE (Teflon©). This improves
wear ability and reduces the possible scratching
of delicate surfaces. The coating is a wear surface
and the base plate is designed for quick and easy
replacement by the machine operator.
Each machine is delivered ready for use with two
solid carbide knives already installed. Original
replacement knives are available in economical
10-packs. The knives are solid carbide, doublesided and a recessed index line allows for fast
changeovers and automatic resetting.
EDGE LIPPING PLANER
Solid wood edges are commonly applied around panels made of plywood, MDF, particle board, etc. and while the panel surfaces are either bare, veneered or covered in laminate, the problem
for the woodworker is always the same: "How do I trim the edge flush with the panel without damaging the surface?" Many different approaches have been tried in the past, including using
straight bits in plunge routers (which often leads to swirl marks), using a handplane (which is tedious and requires a fair amount of practice) or judicious use of a belt sander (with mixed
results in a best case scenario). The BH-556 solves all of these problems with a single pass of its high-speed cutter head!
Whenever a job requires the flush-trimming of solid wood edges on panels, in the shop or on
site, the BH-556 does the work quickly and accurately so you can go on to the next project.

Joining Technology for Windows, Doors, Glass Facades and Interior Woodwork
The Hoffmann Dovetail Joining System is a unique way of efficiently joining wood
and wood related materials like MDF, plywood, particle board, etc. Most
commonly, the system is used for all types of miter joints, on anything from
small, applied moulding to mitered cabinet doors, base frames and
furniture components. Furniture and picture and stretcher frames shipped
ready-to-assemble (RTA) are another area were Hoffmann Keys solve an
assembly problem.
Other applications include difficult to assemble compound miter joints, as found
on crown moulding around the top of cabinets, on custom store fixtures and
even casket lids. Square or butt-joints are another field of application, from
face-frame assembly to trim carpentry (plinth or corner block-to-casing joint)
all the way to heavy post and beam construction for sunrooms and
conservatories.
All in all, the applications are as different and numerous as the customers, from small one-man
custom shops to large production factories, from shutter manufacturers to architectural millwork

Mitered solid wood and aluminum-clad wood windows and doors have become an ever more important product in the building industry in past decade. Aside from standard tilt-and-turn
windows and doors, new designs have evolved that include tilt-and-slide doors, fixed units and special glazing systems for sunrooms, conservatories and overhead skylights.
Hoffmann has been instrumentally involved in the design and testing of various corner joining methods for windows according to IV68, IV78, IV88, IV98, etc. standards. The combination of
Hoffmann Dovetail Keys and hardwood dowels has proven itself in the most demanding tests required by a number of European and American testing institutes.

Post and Beam Construction
Technique and Production
Modern post and beam construction, whether used in commercial curtain walls or sunrooms, screened porches and
conservatories for private residences, places a high demand on every connection. Designers and Architects request thinner
profiles for aesthetic reasons and Hoffmann has responded with the W-4 Key to this growing design trend.
After extensive testing at renowned and accredited testing facilities, the use of Hoffmann W-4 Keys in connection with
wooden dowels was approved for the construction of post and beam walls.
Perhaps most importantly, the German Institute for Building Technology (Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik) approved W-4
Keys in PA plastic as well W-4 Keys in 3-ply solid oak, for structural members as small as 50mm wide. The W-4 Keys supply
the pulling force and assure the joint is pulled tight while the dowels add structural strength and load-bearing capacity.
Time Savings and Ease of Assembly
The square joint connection in post and beam construction with W-4 Keys and dowels greatly improves production and
assembly time. All components are pre-cut, routed and drilled in the shop and on-site assembly requires only a hammer.
And for situations were prefabrication is not feasible e.g. members connecting to existing structures needing to be fitted on
site, we offer a solution as well. The dovetail keyway is routed on a portable bench-top routing machine and the dowel holes
are drilled with a precision boring jig made to reference off of the W-4 keyway. The result: Perfectly aligned joints, even
when machined on-site.

For the production of interior doors, Hoffmann
Keys can be used in both casing corner joints
(mitered or square) as well as in the assembly of
the door panels themselves. The Keys help lock the
door panels securely at each corner and they allow
the manufacturer to supply the casing components
unassembled. This saves not only on
transportation costs but also greatly reduces the
chance of damages during transit. On-site, the
installer simply assembles the casing frames with
Dovetail Keys, inserted from the back and hidden
from view. No clamps, staples or screws are needed
and the corners are always perfectly aligned.
