Beethoven – the "superstar" of
the prestigious spa guests
Symphony from 1821 to 1823. That is because his
landlord, an extremely enterprising coppersmith,
had recognised the potential for making more
money with the famous Beethoven. Driven by an
almost demonic inspiration, Beethoven made a
habit of writing on the house's windowsills when
short of paper. He scribbled long sums, musical
ideas and all manner of "colourful thoughts" on
them, so that these pieces of lime wood became
a form of diary.
In the summer of 1822, a family from North Germany observed him at his work, and bought the
pieces of wood from the smith for a "bundle" of
money. Once the smith had recognised the value
of a single windowsill, it was no great difficulty to
sell all four of them to spa guests. When the maestro learned of this rather surreal transaction, he is
said to have broken out in veritably Homeresque
laughter.
Of the many prestigious guests listed in the historic spa registers of the city of Baden, Ludwig
van Beethoven is certainly the most famous. From
1804 onwards, he spent at least 13 summers in
Baden to take the healing sulphuric spring water
and cure his ailments. He was particularly enamoured of the beautiful nature found in the Helenental valley, and composed numerous masterpieces of musical history amidst this unique rural
idyll. Probably his most famous piece composed
in Baden is the 9th Symphony and its famous "Ode
to Joy". This is why Baden is today also known as
the "City of the European Anthem"!
Beethoven –
an idiosyncratic companion
Beethoven was a difficult presence in the City of
Baden and the terror of every landlord. One of
his antisocial habits was to loudly play the piano
at unsociable hours, to pace up and down when
composing while growling, howling and stamping with his feet. This was why he was rarely welcomed a second time by the same landlord. One
exception to this was at the house in Rathausgasse 10 in Baden, where he worked on his 9th

Since autumn 2014, the house has been home
to an innovative museum with a special audio

Founded in 1810, the Rollettmuseum is the oldest
still-existing museum in Lower Austria. The collections of the museum’s founder are exhibited
in two halls, and range from examples of female
handicrafts through to an Egyptian mummy.
The main section of the museum (eight halls) tells
the story of Baden from the Stone Age through to
the end of allied occupation (1955).

Baden owes its good reputation as the city of
music and operettas to the imperial court and, of
course, the artists. Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert,
Strauß, Lanner – they all chose Baden as their summer resort and found inspiration in the busy social
life, the vineyards and the charming landscape in
the Vienna Woods. To this day, the cultural life in
Baden is intensely vibrant and diversified.
The Stadttheater and the Sommerarena in the
Kurpark form the two venues of Bühne Baden
with a schedule which is above all dedicated
to the operetta in all its facets and which has
become a trademark.
But musicals and ballets also feature here, as do
guest performances by the Landestheater Niederösterreich (Lower Austrian State Theatre) during
the winter season.
Two operettas, one musical, one ballet evening
and concerts form the 2016 summer programme
at Bühne Baden.
In 2016, the Sommerarena Baden will celebrate
its 110-year anniversary! Embedded in the unique
gardens of the Kurpark, this gem of the Art Nouveau style in a unique historic setting is a venue
for discerning entertainment. With its closable
glass roof, the Sommerarena defies every kind of
weather, and guarantees unforgettably atmospheric summer evenings in the magical ambience

water with a temperature of 32 to 36 °C are gushing from 14 natural sulphurous thermal springs in
Baden every day.
A gentle form of gymnastic exercise, qui gong
helps prevent and treat health complaints. The
conscious use of qui exercises influences and
soothes the vegetative nervous system, lowers
blood pressure, strengthens the immune system
and regulates stress hormones. It also improves
mood and the ability to calmly tackle everyday
life and deal with stress constructively.
The latest findings in brain research show that
thoughts and emotions influence bodily processes, just as regulating muscle tension has
a positive effect on mood, for example. Qui
gong has been respecting the close connection

Take a hip-width stance with slightly bent
knees. Relax your shoulders, neck and arms, as
well as your facial muscles by smiling. Breathe
in and out deeply and calmly through your
nose for 1 minute. Now begin to use slight
up-and-down motions generated from the
knees and pelvis to shake your body – every
muscle, every organ. Shake off unpleasant

4 tips to enjoying your rose as a cut flower
at home for a long time!
To allow the rose to optimally absorb water
and nutrients, cut the stem with an approx.
3 cm diagonal cut. Add a preservative to the
water to regulate its PH value and prevent
bacterial growth. (You can purchase this from
a good florist or specialist flower market.)
Please note that roses like to stand in plenty
of water, and that the leaves and branches
should therefore not be submerged, as this
facilitates mould formation. The flower water
should be changed every two to three days,
and the rose should be freshly cut with each
change of water. I wish you lots of enjoyment
with your flowers!

in Baden bei Wien’s historic Kurpark
The highlight of the wine festival: around 50 vintners from the thermal region will present their
wines in white pagoda tents amidst the historic
ambience of Baden’s Kurpark. If the weather
is poor, “WINE IN THE PARK” shall be held in the
events hall of the Casino Baden. Around 300
wines can be sampled up until 8 p.m. Caterers
from throughout Lower Austria will be on hand

September 2016 – Opening of the Weinherbst
(Wine Harvest) within the scope of the Badener
Traubenkurwochen.
During these weeks, grape and wine lovers can
sample and buy fresh grape juice, must and outstanding quality wines from Baden’s winegrowers
as well as Baden’s table grapes. There is musical
entertainment on the weekends.

Even in the olden days, when the imperial family was still vacationing in Baden bei Wien, they
know about the invigorating effect of gentle
exercise outdoors…
Not athletic agony but the joy of fresh forest air
and the knowledge of doing something for your
body – that is the “sports understanding” in the
Vienna Woods. On two wheels, on horseback or
on your own two feet – numerous paths are ready
to take you through Vienna Woods.
From the Vienna Basin to the Traisen and Gölsen
area: 1,300 square kilometres of intact nature in the
immediate proximity of a megacity are a unique
setting worldwide. Undulating wooded sandstone
hills in the west, steep chalkstone rocks in the east,
broadleaf and pine forests, interrupted by meadows and fields, shape the landscape.

Whether on the musical Beethoven hiking path,
the romantic “Wegerl during the Helenental –
paths through Helenental valley” or the spiritual
places of the Via Sacra – witnesses of the long historical past can be found everywhere.
These also include Mayerling, the site of the tragedy surrounding crown prince Rudolph, and Heiligenkreuz monastery where monks sing powerful
„Gregorianian chants”.
But there is another destination that may entice
many a hiker or bicyclist: the wine growing on
these romantic hills can be tasted in many small
taverns along the bicycling and hiking trails.

Duration: approx. 2 hours for experienced cyclists
Lindkogel – stop-off at the "Eisernes Tor" –
Exit "Raiffeisen Trail"
The classic Lindkogel route through the Helenental and Sattelbach up to the so-called
"Eisernes Tor" ("Iron Gate"), the look-out tower
and refuge. A stop here is always worthwhile!
Great food, friendly hosts and a meeting-point for
many cyclists. On from the Eisernes Tor refuge via
a technically challenging stretch towards Sooss.
Shortly before the "Schneebergblick" turn-off,
turn left into the downhill trail signposted "Raiffeisen Trail". Signposted with a sign bearing the
Raiffeisen emblem. This speedy and challenging
downhill trail requires some skill and control over
the bike. Careful! There are some stone steps and
jumps which should be approached slowly the
first time round. You get plenty of distance and air
time here. The downhill trail leads directly into the
beautiful wine-producing town of Sooss, where a
visit to the wine tavern is almost obligatory!

Quietly situated, this guest house offers the discerning guest the ideal environment for a relaxing stay. It
is located directly by the Kurpark and the Sommerarena. The idyllic centre of the imperial city of Baden,
the Doblhoffpark and its Rosarium, and the famous thermal baths such as the Römertherme and the
Thermalstrandbad can be reached within 5 – 10 minutes. Walking trails lead directly from the guest
house to the southern Vienna Woods. And there are deckchairs in the garden, perfect for daydreamers.
The Carl Michael Ziehrer Haus was built in 1912 under the protectorate of Archduke Rainer,
and originally served as a convalescence home for musicians.
Today, the Carl Michael Ziehrer Haus is open to all, and is an idyllically situated place in which to spend
the summer months. Artists and musicians still receive reduced prices, a continuation of the guest
house's original ethos.
