Matt Ballew gifts
cedar hat to principal
Ferndale High School Senior Matt Ballew is a kind and humble
person. When he chose his Senior Project, he wanted to ensure it had
deep meaning to himself and his culture. Matt chose to weave a traditional Lummi Nation cedar hat. This was a first for him—learning the
technique from his dad.
In Lummi culture, when you make something for the first time, it’s
tradition to gift it to someone. In this case, that someone was Ferndale
High’s Principal Jeff Gardner. In Matt’s words, I wanted to honor our
principal and his leadership role in Ferndale High School. To me, it is
important to give respect to the person who has been given that title.
Nicely done, Matt. You are one honorable human being.

tiveness (CEE), Washington State School Directors’ Association,

Students compose original works for
their respective orchestras
This year, the Ferndale Schools Strings Gala featured the original compositions of two district students. Horizon Middle School Eighth Grader Thomas Lebitz-Braden wrote Phantasie
in C. Phantasie was a term first applied to music in the 16th century and was described as
music that did not specifically follow any type of musical form. Phantasie was used by many
composers including Bach and Mozart.
For his Senior Project, Ferndale High School
Senior Evan Duncan, worked on about twelve
different compositions, choosing one (unnamed at this
time) to debut at the annual gala.
Each of these students did extensive research on
the style of the pieces and how to write them. Both
compositions were debuted in the Annual All District
Orchestra Gala comprised of: Sixth Grade Combined
Orchestra, Horizon Middle School and Vista Middle
School Seventh Grade Orchestras, Horizon Middle
School and Vista Middle School Eighth Grade Combined Orchestra, Ferndale High School Symphony
Orchestra, Ferndale High Advanced Chamber Orchestra and combined Ferndale High Orchestras.

Grad Walk 2016
Pomp and Circumstance, high fives and a few teardrops along the way
Days before commencement ceremonies, Ferndale High School’s and Windward
High School’s Class of 2016 graduating seniors made a special visit to their
elementary and middle school alma maters. This is the first year that graduates
have had the opportunity to not only be honored by their former teachers and
support staff, but to also encourage and set an example for our younger students
so they too can be successful in school and one day graduate.
