Dear Donors and Guests,
We are humbled by your generosity, kindness and unwavering spirit of
giving. The selfless acts of more than 14,700 donors helped Palmetto Health
Foundation reach a milestone in our mission—more than $8.5 million
raised last fiscal year. Because of your investment in Palmetto Health,
thousands of patients have access to enhanced programs and services as
well as the latest equipment, including 3D mammography and whole breast
ultrasound. We hope you will take time this holiday season to reflect upon
your generosity.
Warm wishes for a joyous holiday season,
Bill Duda, Chair

Palmetto Health Foundation Fellows
Advocates dedicated to improving health care
in our community
Palmetto Health Foundation recently inducted these Fellows in grateful
appreciation and recognition of their exemplary service, dynamic
leadership and generous personal commitment to the mission and vision
of Palmetto Health Foundation.
Thomas B. Bates (posthumously)
In 2007, when Palmetto Health Foundation was in the
midst of a $20 million capital campaign to expand and
renovate Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital to become
South Carolina’s first freestanding children’s hospital,
Tom Bates made a significant gift—$1 million. This was
the largest individual gift received for the campaign
and the second largest individual gift ever received by Palmetto Health
Foundation. Bates’ gift named the Tom Bates Day Hospital at Palmetto
Health Children’s Hospital.
When Bates toured Children’s Hospital and met the care team, he realized
their commitment and noted the “beautiful things they do for children
every day.” He was most pleased that his gift would help provide a restful
place for families to take their children for care without requiring inpatient
hospitalization.
Prior to his gift to Children’s Hospital, Bates, a retired financial consultant
and auditor with Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, made a
significant gift to Spring Valley High School to build Bates Hall, the first
freestanding wrestling facility of its kind in the state.
Bates died in September 2010.
James S. Konduros, Esq.
In 1998, Baptist Medical Center and Richland Memorial
Hospital became one integrated health care system—
Palmetto Health Alliance. The alliance was significant
news for our community and garnered Palmetto
Health national attention. For two large, competing
hospital systems to become one, years of planning and
preparation, with the right leaders in place, was critical. Jim Konduros, Esq.,
co-founder of the McNair Law Firm, was a trusted advisor to the alliance
team, as he helped navigate countless legal and regulatory concerns in
the process. His tenacity for a successful merger coined him the nickname,

“Coach K.” Years prior to the merger, Konduros’s diligent work as chief
legal counsel for Baptist Healthcare System set the tone for his successful
outcomes on the Palmetto Health Alliance team.
In the years that followed, Konduros’s relationship with Palmetto Health
remained strong, as he and his family continued to support the hospital
through significant gifts to Palmetto Health Foundation for a variety of
programs at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital including the Children’s
Hospital Capital Campaign, Pediatric Neurology, Child Life, Pediatric
Palliative Care Program, Sickle Cell and Reach Out and Read. Most
recently, Konduros established the Konduros Fisherman Fund Endowment
for Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, with the initial earnings benefiting
the Child Abuse Medical Assessment Program.
P. Prithvi Reddy, MD, FACS, FAAP
As a “Founding Physician” of Palmetto Health Children’s
Hospital, Dr. Prithvi Reddy was a well-loved and
respected leading physician for many years at Children’s
Hospital. His unwavering commitment to children’s
health care and innovative ideas for pediatric surgery
was vital to his success as a distinguished member of
the Palmetto Health Richland medical staff and leadership team. During his
tenure, he was a founding member of Pediatric Surgeons of South Carolina,
chief of the Children’s Hospital medical staff, senior medical director for
Surgery at Palmetto Health Richland and a member of the Children’s
Hospital Board from 2005 to 2006. Dr. Reddy’s personal contributions and
efforts to strengthen the relationship between the Hospital and Foundation
were instrumental to the success of the Children’s Hospital Capital
Campaign and Pediatric Surgery Campaign.
Over the years, Dr. Reddy was presented numerous awards, including the
2005 Derrick/Lynch Champion of Children Award and the 2005 Pediatric
Hall of Fame Award from the University of South Carolina School of
Medicine Department of Pediatrics. In 1998, 2003, 2004 and 2005, he
received the Outstanding Clinical Faculty Award, presented by general
surgery residents at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
Dr. Reddy retired in 2012 after 36 years of service to Palmetto Health
Children’s Hospital.

Fund-a-need
Tonight at 8:15 p.m.
LIVE FUND-A-NEED to support an Inpatient Rehabilitation Program
at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital
Each year, more than 80,000 children are cared for at Palmetto Health
Children’s Hospital. Some patients experience a life-altering condition
or injury and require specialized rehabilitation. Because an inpatient
pediatric rehabilitation program does not exist at our Children’s Hospital—
or anywhere in South Carolina—the lives of many patients and families
are turned upside down because they have to go out-of-state for care.
Families are often unexpectedly uprooted for months at a time.
Shawn Elliott, interim head football coach at The University of South
Carolina, and Eric Elkins have teamed up with Palmetto Health Foundation
to create a special fund, the Double E Fund, to provide funding for an
inpatient pediatric rehab program right here in our community so families
can sleep in their own beds at night.
Tonight, you can make an investment in Palmetto Health Children’s
Hospital by providing specialized equipment for the rehab program.
To participate in the fund-a-need live auction, use your bidding card to
donate. Simply raise it, and the auctioneer will acknowledge your gift.
A volunteer will greet you for payment information. You can also reply to
any Qtego text with GIVE and the dollar amount you would like to donate.
For example, to donate $100 to the Fund-A-Need, reply to any Qtego text
with GIVE100 and send.

2015 Miracle Children
treated at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital
Clay Dixon
In August 2007, first grader Clay Dixon was referred
to a speech therapist because his teacher was having
difficulty understanding him. After a routine evaluation and
subsequent visit to Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital
in 2008, doctors discovered a mass on Clay’s brain. At
the age of 6, Clay was diagnosed with a stage II Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine
Giloma, an extremely slow growing tumor that wrapped itself around
his brain stem. This tumor is inoperable and often considered terminal.
However, while Clay’s tumor is not going away, it also is not growing.
Today, Clay is a teenager and an honors student and is a wonderful
advocate for CAMP KEMO Programs.
Sara Duncan
In September 2013 at the age of 4, Sara Duncan was
diagnosed with stage IV High Risk Neuroblastoma, a very
rare childhood cancer. In the 18 months following her
diagnosis, Sara endured several rounds of high intensity
chemotherapy, antibody therapy and radiation. She
underwent surgeries to remove her tumors and left kidney and received
a complete stem cell transplant. As of March 2015, Sara has no evidence
of the disease and is currently participating in a Phase II Clinical Trial
preventative therapy for patients in remission from Neuroblastoma.
Sara’s parents, David and Michelle, had a previous experience with
Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital through their other children, which
reassured them that Sara would receive the best possible care. With
the help of her dedicated medical team, Sara stayed on track with her
treatment while Child Life specialists helped make her stay as fun as
possible. The Duncan family praises the hospital for being a place that “you
can trust to give the best possible care to your child along with making sure
they are able to be a child.”
Today, Sara is a lively first grader who enjoys softball, horseback riding and
playing the violin. She hopes to one day be able to sing and play music like
a “rock star princess!”

John and Phillips Marshall
When John and Phillips Marshall were born 12 weeks early
in July 2011, they both weighed less than three pounds.
Immediately after birth, they were rushed to the Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Palmetto Health Children’s
Hospital.
Phillips was initially placed on a ventilator for a few days, and then he and
John both had to use a CPAP machine to help their lungs expand. After
being taken off the CPAP machine, their next challenge was to learn to
feed. After 106 days spent at Children’s Hospital, the premature twins went
home with their parents. Today, John and Phillips are “as good as gold” as
two happy, smiling twin boys.
The Marshalls distinctly remember a conversation with Darlene, a NICU
nurse practitioner, who told them that if they could not go home and sleep
at night, then the NICU staff was not doing their job. The Marshalls feel
these words exemplify the attitudes, practice and methods of care of the
NICU staff.
“The nurses, doctors and staff at the NICU not only befriended us, but also
became our family,” recall the Marshalls. “They loved our boys, and we
know that with all of our hearts as parents. Our boys were cared for as we
would have cared for them at home, and we truly believe they would not
be where they are today had they not been helped by the Palmetto Health
Children’s Hospital NICU team.”
Lila Mozingo
Before Lila Mozingo was born in May 2011, her parents,
Padgett and Mark, learned she had an AV canal defect
that would require open heart surgery. Three days after
she was born, though, Lila needed emergency surgery
for a malrotated intestine and was later diagnosed with
Hirschsprung’s Disease. She stayed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at
Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital for two-and-a-half months and went
through four surgeries, extensive therapy and countless tests. When she
was 6 months old, Lila had open heart surgery and continues to return to
Children’s Hospital for follow-up care.
Today, Lila is a thriving, limitless four-year-old, and the Mozingos give credit
to the care provided to them by the doctors and staff at Children’s Hospital.
“The quality of care was outstanding, and our sweet girl was never treated
with anything but the kindest, most compassionate care,” said Padgett.

Zoe Tipping
On April 21, 2014, a routine family trip to the zoo ended
in panic when Courtney Tipping found blood in her
daughter Zoe’s urine. After rushing to the doctor, she was
taken to Children’s Hospital where she was diagnosed
with a stage IV Wilm’s Tumor. The tumor started in her
kidneys but had spread to her lungs and vena cava. Zoe’s
parents, Courtney and Allen, describe Children’s Hospital staff as being like
family to them. Zoe remembers playing with her Child Life specialists while
receiving treatment, and Courtney and Allen felt that the hospital staff
loved and cared for the Tipping family as their own. After spending time in
the hospital during Zoe’s treatment, her parents want others to know that
“you can trust you will be well taken care of in all ways.”
Today, Zoe is a happy 4-year-old who hopes to be a chef one day. She is
excited to sing to Jesus and receive presents from Santa this Christmas.
