Fall 2009 Girls boys & tball baske ation r Regist ins g be Sept.19 ACTiVE LiVinG • C H i L DREn & YouTH SERViCES Glennwood Whiz Kids and Winnona park After-School programs earn NAA Accreditation T wo more Decatur after school programs were accredited in spring 2009 by the National AfterSchool Association (NAA). Glennwood Whiz Kids at Glennwood Academy and Winnona Park Animal Crackers at Winnona Park Elementary join Oakhurst and Clairemont Animal Crackers as NAA-accredited programs. Decatur Children and Youth Services now boasts four of only 26 NAA-accredited programs in Georgia. To receive accreditation, the programs had to meet 144 standards in the NAA Standards for Quality School-Age Care. NAA, founded in 1987, is a professional association dedicated to the development, education, and care of children and youth during their out-of-school hours. Decatur had one of the first programs accredited in the United States in 1999. Special thanks go to parents Robin Kuwahara, Hope Duncan, Sherrett Chapman, and Dawn Diedrich for their time, support and great ideas and to parent/principal Greg Wiseman, principal Dr. Gloria Lee, and our wonderful program staff, all of whom were instrumental members of our Assessing School Age Quality teams. In other accreditation news the Project REAL program at Renfroe expects to be among the first programs in Georgia to attempt accreditation via the Council on Accreditation (COA), which became the accrediting organization for new applicants in fall 2008. The Georgia School Age Care Association has supported Project REAL’s efforts in preparing for the accreditation process. COA’s expectations are even more stringent than those of the NAA. Project REAL will apply for accreditation with COA in the current school year. Decatur Recreation Center Animal Crackers has always adhered to the same NAA standards. This year we will begin evaluating the program for readiness to start the COA accreditation process as well. After establishing the first after-school programs in Decatur at two recreation centers, she spent countless hours advocating to allow the Recreation Department to provide after-school programming in the schools. I n 1984, the department collaborated with City Schools of Decatur to begin Animal Crackers at two schools. The use of school facilities was soon expanded to include school athletic fields so children participating in the after-school programs would have access to the Decatur Youth Sports program as well. Mary’s vision brought award-winning programming to the children of Decatur. Animal Crackers received awards for innovative programming from the National League of Cities and the Georgia Municipal Association. The Decatur Recreation and Community Services department received the Agency of the Year award from the Georgia Recreation and Park Association. A cornerstone of Mary’s mission was always to better serve the underserved in her community. Through her commitment to her vision, Mary found funding and grants necessary to expand programs so that they would serve more children and youth. The Oakhurst Initiative expanded services to Oakhurst and Fifth Avenue schools, and by 1993 there were after-school programs in all seven elementary schools, Ebster Recreation Center, and Renfroe Middle School. Mary Miller’s Firsts: • First municipality in Georgia and one of the first in the nation to allow non-school agencies to provide after-school care in public school facilities. • First non-school agency in Georgia to request and receive lottery funding to provide afterschool programs for pre-k students attending public school. • First non-United Way agency to receive funding for a program – Fifth Avenue and Oakhurst after school. • Pilot site for the 3:00 Project AmeriCorps middle school after-school program (one of three pilots in the state). • Within the first year of the 21st Century Community Learning Center Grants funding, co-wrote and received $1.8 million grant for three years and $2.9 million second grant for five years. • Completed two music CDs with after-school children that were used to generate funds for the Decatur Youth Fund. • Children’s community murals displayed at the High Museum of Art for three months. For more information contact Marian Melton, 678-553-6560, or [email protected]. It’s phenomenal – 58% more scholarships this year! The Decatur Youth Fund increased the number of scholarships by 58% from fall 2008 through summer 2009! it took each of you to make this happen. The fund provided 275 scholarships to Decatur children for these great activities: • Soccer (60) • After school (2) • Basketball (36) • Cheerleading (10) • Lacrosse (14) • Baseball (42) • Swim Team (21) • Swim Camps (6) • Tennis Camps (6) • Summer Art Camp (24) • Summer Sports Camps (36) • Nature Camps (1) • Summer Day Camps (17) MARY MILLeR continued from page 2 summer camps and participate in youth sports, cultural activities and after-school programs. Thanks to Mary’s dedication and continued efforts, the Decatur Tour of Homes, the Decatur BBQ, Blues and Bluegrass Festival and the Decatur Wine Festival all give from their revenues to support the Youth Fund each year. The Christmas Decatur initiative, which serves needy families during the holiday season, was another of Mary’s visions. Seeing numerous groups in the community giving to the same families, Mary realized that organiz- ing the groups would make it possible to serve many more children and families. From this vision came today’s “Season of Giving” that provides holiday gifts to 550 children and senior citizens each year. During Mary’s career the department received two awards from the United Way of MetroAtlanta:theValuingDiversityAward andtheprestigiousAlexisdeTocqueville Society award, which “recognizes champions around the world who have devoted time, talent and funds to create long-lasting changes by tackling our community’s most serious is- sues.” Both awards represent everything Mary stands for in the Decatur community. Mary serves on a variety of local, county and state committees and boards. She is a leader who can bring groups together and get things done, as well as a team player. She serves as an advocate for children and families within her community and her state. She may have retired from the city, but she will continue to be a force for children no matter where she is. register online at www.decaturga.com • Decatur Active Living • Children and Youth Services • Fall 2009 • Playbook 3 AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS – GRADES K-5 • Contact Claire Miller, 404-378-1082 our World Through an Hour Glass: History, After-school Style The history of our world through time is the focus of this year’s project-based learning.
