april /may 2016 - City of Decatur, Indiana
by Wylie Sirk - President
Decatur Main Street was established through
the Indiana Main Street to encourage the
revitalization and restoration of our downtown
area. As a Board we function with the work
of four committees – the Design Committee,
Organization Committee, Promotion Committee
and Economic Restructuring Committee. These
groups offer opportunities for community
volunteers to be involved in the work. It also
creates an environment for the Chamber of
Commerce, industries, local government and
private citizens to join forces to see all benefit
from a healthy local economy. Solid partnerships
are crucial to the Main Street program’s success.
As an Indiana recognized non-profit organization,
Decatur Main Street becomes eligible for state
level grants that providew matching financial
help, which supports special projects. One of those
projects already receiving grant dollars was the
Pennsy Depot.
Reasons why to be a member:
•
Locally owned businesses keep profits in town and support other local businesses and community projects.
•
The commercial district is a reflection of the community image.
•
A vibrant downtown creates a feeling of “hometown pride” and sense of place.
•
The downtown district is a public gathering area, where parades, special events, and celebrations
are held in a unique setting.

MAIN STREET APPROVES NEW
PLANTINGS
FOR FOUNDERS PARK
Spring and summer time color is coming to
Founders Park. New to the park this year will be
trees, flowers and other foliage adorning the two
circles in the middle of the park. The Decatur Main
Street Design Committee assembled a subgroup
interested in making a plan for the park – short
term and long term. Other long-term ideas for the
park include a fence, additional plantings and the
Let Freedom Ring statue.
Decatur Main Street is looking for friends of the
park again this year. These friends are welcome to
adopt the park for a day or week of the month to
tend to the park – pick up trash, pull weeds and be
sure the park is in good shape. Anyone interested
should contact Decatur Main Street at 724-7171.
Decatur Main Street sends out a special
thank you to the Decatur Small Business
Association (DSBA) for their recent gift and for
the work they have done for the betterment of
Decatur.
The DSBA voted a year ago to idle
operations and to allow Decatur Main Street to
focus on projects like the Citywide Christmas
Open House, the Sidewalk Sale etc., that were
previously administered by them. The trial was
to be for one year. The executive board of the DSBA
resently met and voted to permanently disolve
the association and to donate all remaining
funds to Decatur Main Street. The funds to
be donated with the stipulation that they be
divided up evenly among the four Main Street
commitees, Design, Economic Restructuring,
Organization and Promotion and to be used only
on projects that are for the betterment of all
businesses in the downtown area. The Decatur
Main Street Board of Directors accepted the
requirements at their March meeting. A check
for $2600 was presented to Main Street by
former DSBA treasurer Phil Wolpert.

Remember When?
The building on the southeast corner of
Second and Monroe streets that is now
the home of Decatur City Hall was built
in 1921 to house the Old Adams County
Bank. Due to the stock market crash of
1929, the bank went under. The building
sat empty for a number of years until the
First State Bank of Decatur from down
the street took over the site in 1938. The
First State Bank remained there until the
1990s when it consolidated with Wells
Fargo Bank and moved to their present
site on 13th Street. The building was then
purchased by Adams Memorial Hospital
and used for offices.
In 2014 the building was purchased and
renovated by the City of Decatur for a
new and more spacious home for local
government.
SAFE decorates downtown
with pinwheels to promote
Child Abuse Awareness
The local organization SAFE or Supporting All
Families Everyday has decorated the Adams County
Courthouse lawn and other downtown sites with pinwheels
to raise awareness that April is Child Abuse Prevention
Month. They also sponsored a carnival at Riverside Center
on April 16.
The vision of SAFE is to live in a community where
children flourish, free from abuse and neglect. Therefore,
child abuse and neglect should be prevented before the
pain has been inflicted.
SAFE is dedicated to preventing child abuse and
neglect, and is committed to making Adams County
a better, safe place for our most precious resources, our
children.
