Decatur Receives FEMA Flood Grant The City of Decatur has received a $1,239,962 federal grant to purchase four properties on Westchester Drive that are seven feet below base flood elevation and have been flooded many times. The houses on the properties will be demolished and the land will be left as greenspace. The grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA has invested $3,240,053.95 in projects to reduce residential flooding in Decatur and three other Georgia communities: Savannah, DeKalb County and Douglas County. Decatur’s grant was the largest of the four awarded. DBA Calls for Davis Award Nominations Do you know a public servant who goes far and beyond his/her job to strengthen our community, serve as a role model, and contribute to our community on an ongoing basis? The Decatur Business Association is calling for nominations for the seventh annual Thomas O. Davis Public Servant Award to honor a public servant – one who often goes unnoticed in his/her work but serves as an inspiration, exemplifies honesty, integrity and professionalism in the performance of duties, and has served as a public employee for at least five years. Previous recipients include Virginia Atchison (Recreation), Jennifer Ross (Police), Willie Shoemake (Public Works), Alma Fleetwood (Community & Economic Development), Charles Hammonds (Public Works), and LeeAnn Harvey (Community & Economic Development). The DBA established the award in memory of Thomas O. Davis, Decatur’s city attorney from 1968 until his death in 2000. Submit a nomination by writing a letter/statement explaining why the nominee should receive the award. All nominations must be signed and submitted by Dec. 1. For information call 404-371-8386 or email [email protected]. Davis United World College scholars take a moment on the Agnes Scott College campus with President Elizabeth Kiss. Edwige Tia from Burkina Faso and the Lester Pearson United World College of the Pacific; Zamachiza “Zama” Mahlogo from South Africa and the United World College-USA; and Catharine “Kate” Martella from Tennessee and the United World College of Southern Africa each started classes at Agnes Scott this year. Decatur Is Flexcar’s Kind of Town The Flexcar program is a huge success in Decatur with usage well over five hours per day. In fact, Decatur has the highest usage of all the Flexcar neighborhoods in Atlanta. Because of the tremendous response, another Flexcar vehicle has been placed near the square – a new minivan. There is also another hybrid in town at Agnes Scott, where the program allows students to join. Decatur is just one of a number of Atlanta-area neighborhoods where nearly 100 Flexcars are used. Based on a national study, one shared car can take the place of nearly 15 privately owned vehicles. This helps reduce congestion, improve air quality, and free up parking spaces. Atlanta’s Flexcar fleet consists of pickup trucks, minivans, Mini Coopers and smaller SUVs. At least 25 percent of the fleet is hybrid. For more information, visit www.flexcar.com. d {x{HFFM©Z{yw\ y3 CITY NEWS Happier Holidays for Children and Seniors A Season of Giving/Christmas Decatur is looking for caring neighbors and community members to help low-income children and senior citizens enjoy the holidays. Here are the ways you can help: Have a Wish List sent to you and buy gifts for a specific child or senior. Spend approximately $100. If a child needs a warm winter coat, please make that your first purchase. We want every child to receive a book. If you purchase your book at Little Shop of Stories and mention why, the shop will donate 20 percent of your purchase to A Season of Giving/Christmas Decatur. Or send a check and one of our volunteers will do the shopping. Make the check payable to A Season of Giving/Christmas Decatur and mail it to P.O. Box 220, Decatur, GA 30031. Volunteer in the office on weekdays or in our distribution center during the first week in December on Saturdays, weekdays, and evenings. Consider working with your neighbors, co-workers, club, or other organization to purchase gifts. Gifts are due on Saturday, Dec. 1 – only weeks away! For more information or to obtain one or more Wish Lists, call 404-378-8068 or email [email protected]. Decatur Recreation Welcomes Playgroups Want to keep your playgroup kids active year round? Annual fees for Decatur residents are $20 for the first dog and $5 for each additional dog. A limited number of nonresident permits are available at $60 for the first dog and $15 for each additional dog. New permits can be used through December 2008. Purchase permit tags at Decatur Recreation Center and Glenlake Tennis Center. Residents whose dogs currently have tags and are already in the system will not have to provide proof of residency again but must show proof of current rabies vaccination. New residents must provide proof of residency and proof of rabies vaccination to receive their tags at the resident rate. Driver’s licenses with city of Decatur addresses will be accepted as proof of residency. Nonresidents paying the nonresident rate must bring proof of vaccination. Dog park fees help off-set costs that include dog waste bags, planned water stations, and additional maintenance hours spent clearing debris and cleaning up dog waste before the park can be mowed. Planned Improvements Greg Levine of Trees Atlanta has recommended trees for the wet area at the Oakhurst dog park: five bald cypresses, a Virginia magnolia and an overcup oak. The city plans to purchase these trees through the tree bank program. Tree planting will be scheduled during the winter months and only if watering restrictions are lifted. The double gate will be improved to prevent small dogs from exiting the park under the gate. A watering station is budgeted for the Adair Park dog park. Issues for All Parks Toys and bowls left in the park create a hazard to city workers mowing the parks. A large storage bin has been placed at the entrance to each dog park for water bowls and toys. Patrons can store these items in the bin between visits. Any toys or bowls left on the grounds will be disposed of by city workers when they empty trash and mow the grass. :geemfalqÚJ]jna[]Úg^ÚK`YfckÚÜÚEgnÚ~ ÚÜÚÚhe The community is invited to join in a service of prayer and song, followed by fellowship and light refreshments, on the Sunday before Thanksgiving at Columbia Presbyterian Church, 711 Columbia Dr. Congregations involved in planning the service are Columbia Presbyterian, Avondale First Baptist, Avondale Patillo United Methodist, Belvedere United Methodist and Midway Presbyterian. Oakhurst ‘Green Home’ Renovation to Be Featured on New TV Program The Boyce-Frost residence at 601 Third Ave., Oakhurst, is currently being renovated by Renewal Construction, Inc., using green building principles, practices and materials. The project will be featured on the Discovery Network’s new Green Homes TV show, which will debut in 2008. The show will be hosted by Emmy-award-winning television personality Steve Thomas, formerly of This Old House. Filming will begin in Oakhurst this fall and will follow Renewal’s progress in incorporating environmentally sound Wx {Pj~{X y{E\ ~ {x{| {{ w D features into the Prairie-style home, X{ PWy~{y={z{} |~{{ w{z~ {D including Energy Star-rated windows, dual flush toilets, recycled glass countertops, low-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints, SIPs (structural insulated panels), geothermal heating and cooling, a tankless water heater, cisterns for rain water harvesting and on-site materials recycling. All materials are carefully selected for recycled content and minimal travel distance from the supplier to the job site. Design plans for the renovation were created by local architect Eric Rawlings, AIA. The design integrates several above-ground cisterns into the architecture, bringing the water down Buddhist-style rain chains into a cluster of river stones at the top of the stone-clad cistern vaults. The captured rain water is available for landscape watering or car washing. The excess water spills out of the cistern vault down a cascade of stone and into a French drain trench that looks much like a Japanese-style dry riverbed. Another key feature is the geothermal system, which provides temperate air using the Earth’s constant temperature as a heat source and heat sink. Renewal Construction, Inc., is at 124 S.
