QWC strives for more Australian writers to have sustainable careers, and to be enjoyed throughout the world. We encourage connection and creativity through the art and business of writing. We celebrate the importance of stories, and help Australian writers to create them and audiences to engage with them. We offer professional advice and industry knowledge to help writers achieve their professional and creative writing goals. Books From Our Backyard 2013 will be released in July 2014 and contains over 200 new works published by Queensland authors, in a variety of categories and genres – from children’s books to crime, memoir to speculative fiction. Submit 20 pages of your work for review and comment, then engage in a 90-minute conversation with your mentor, who will provide advice according to your goals. The Writer’s Surgery is focused on you as a writer – rather than just your words. Whether you are a children’s and picture book author, need advice on digital publishing, write for performance, or need guidance on your submission package, get the personalised help you need from the people who know. QWC 2014 YOUNG WRITERS PROGRAM For writers aged 10-19 QWC’s Young Writers Program is geared towards writers between the ages of 10 and 19, at all levels of experience and commitment. Our programs explore the fun of reading and writing, and are a great opportunity to develop your skills, learn new techniques, be inspired and meet like-minded writers. ZAC SMITH-CAMERON is an illustrator and graphic designer who has worked in the creative industries for a decade. Co-founder of Ashcan Comics, he also writes scripts for comics. JESSICA WHITE is the author of the award-winning A Curious Intimacy (Penguin 2007) and Entitlement (2012). In between working as a research assistant, she researches and writes fiction and non-fiction. DR KIM WILKINS is an awardwinning author and teacher, with over two million words of fiction in print. She lectures at The University of Queensland and her books are published all over the world. SCOTT WINGS is a performance poet, comedian, songwriter, rapper and chewer of all word things. He is the 2013 Performance Poetry World Cup champion and 2 x Qld State Poetry Slam champion. He conducts workshops with students of all ages and abilities and has a Grad. Dip in Primary Education. HÉLÈNE YOUNG is a contemporary suspense author. When she’s not writing, she flies Dash 8 aircraft around regional Australia. Her stories are set at the top end of Australia, and her fifth book, Safe Harbour, was released in April 2014 by Penguin Books Australia. INGA SIMPSON is the author of Mr Wigg, shortlisted for the 2014 Indie Award for debut fiction. She has a PhD in creative writing, and her new novel, Nest, will be published in July 2014. QWC.ASN.AU 28 TERMS AND CONDITIONS In the event that Queensland Writers Centre must cancel an event you are booked into, we will attempt to reschedule it for a later date. If we cannot reschedule the event, or if you are unable to attend on the amended date, your payment will be refunded in full. If you cancel a booking for, or are unable to attend, an event such as a workshop, seminar or masterclass, Queensland Writers Centre will not provide a cash refund. If your cancellation is made at least 5 business days prior to the event, you may use your original payment as credit towards the cost of attending another QWC workshop, seminar, masterclass or event (space permitting). If the alternative event is valued at less than the value of the original booking, no cash will be refunded for the balance. The alternative event you select must take place in the same calendar year as the original booking. If there are no available places in another event, your credit may be used to purchase or extend QWC membership. If you have paid a deposit to secure a place in a Year of the Writer course (Year of the Novel, Year of the Edit, etc.) your deposit will only be refunded in full if you cancel more than six weeks prior to the course start date. Cancellations after this date will not be refunded. All credit must be allocated within 30 days of issue by making a subsequent booking.
