The Alliance Française French Film Festival was first
launched in 1989 by the Alliance Française in Sydney and
has since become a major annual event for all 6 capital
Alliances Françaises in Australia: Sydney, Melbourne,
Brisbane, Perth, Canberra and Adelaide.
Each year, the Festival provides a unique opportunity for
cinema aficionados to embark upon a thrilling voyage
which showcases the best contemporary French films.
With each Festival season, Australian audiences have
displayed a continually deepening interest in our screening
programme, which also contributes to the strengthening
of cultural ties between our two countries.
Since its Parisian inception in 1883, the Alliance
Française has expanded into a network of over 800
Alliances worldwide, coordinated by the Fondation
Alliance Française based in Paris. The purpose of
Alliance Française is to promote the French language
and francophone cultures, and to this aim, hundreds
of Alliances have developed across the world under
the status of not-for-profit associations governed by
local law. The network of Alliance Française is also
distinguished by thousands of cultural events, such as
the Alliance Française French Film Festival, which they
stage throughout the year, complimenting the peerless
French language courses offered by 741 Alliances to
550,000 students across all continents.
It is my pleasure to now invite you to discover the 2016
Screening Programme and to wish you a happy Festival.

The Alliance Française French Film Festival,
presented in partnership with the Embassy
of France in Australia, is a unique experience.
With the success of last year’s Festival with
close to 160,000 admissions, it is unparalleled.
These are the kinds of projects that paint
the image of France in Australia; a France in
motion, decidedly innovative and creative.
Come and discover French cinema at its best
for this 27th edition of the Alliance Française
French Film Festival.

Ambassador of France to Australia

The annual Alliance Française French Film Festival has become the most popular
national film event in Australia, which should come as no surprise, given the
consistently rich and diverse quality of French film production. Few countries
have managed to face up to the Hollywood juggernaut that swamps the world’s
cinemas, but in France, American films screen alongside an equal number of
French films, from comedies to thrillers to intimate psychological dramas. France
was a pioneer of cinema, and the French have never wavered in their love for
the medium. The worldwide popularity of French cinema is the result, and once
again this year the Festival is screening a representative selection of new films,
with something to please everyone.

Julien Rappeneau’s enchanting directorial debut Rosalie Blum
is a warm, witty and impeccably performed drama-comedy
about a random encounter that has unexpected and farreaching consequences.
Opening with one of the most famous shots of the legendary
Brigitte Bardot, Contempt remains a glorious experience
made for the big screen. Over fifty years on from its first
release, Jean-Luc Godard’s film remains a touchstone for
world cinema, an incandescent work of intellect and passion,
and a true film icon.
Thirty-something Vincent Machot (indelibly played by Kyan
Khojandi) is a hairdresser, like his father before him. Life
rotates around work, his overbearing mother who lives in
the apartment upstairs, and a womanising cousin constantly
trying to set him up. But one morning Vincent experiences a
powerful déjà-vu when he meets the gaze of a grocery store
clerk, Rosalie Blum (the fabulous Noémie Lvovsky). Intrigued
by this mysterious woman, he begins following her…
To reveal more would only spoil the surprises of Rappeneau’s
ingeniously structured tale, other than to say that a series
of coincidences – both hilarious and dramatic – memorably
brings together a group of lost souls in a manner reminiscent
of Claude Berri’s wonderful Hunting and Gathering.
Indeed with its themes of fraternity, love and the need for
human connection, Rosalie Blum delivers a timely reminder
of the best that French culture has to offer. It’s a joy to watch.
Australian Première
Godard self-reflexively tells the story of a screenwriter,
Paul Javal (Michel Piccoli), who is working on a script of
The Odyssey, directed by film giant Fritz Lang (playing
himself), and sure to be a box-office bomb. Art, commerce
and personal affairs clash as Paul courts favour with brash
producer Jerry Prokosch (Hollywood stalwart Jack Palance),
and compromises his marriage to Camille (Bardot).
Contempt remains a miraculous contemplation of the
corroding effect of the film business on those who aspire to
raise it to the level of great art. Godard used colour for the
first time, flooding the screen with stunning compositions,
and composer Georges Delerue created one of his most
heartbreaking scores. This newly restored version of
Contempt is not to be missed.

Venice International Film Festival 2015 – Official Competition
Winner of Best Screenplay Award, Christian Vincent
Winner of Volpi Cup for Best Actor, Fabrice Luchini
Borgen television star Sidse Babett Knudsen and
revered actor Fabrice Luchini (Gemma Bovery – Festival
2015, Cycling with Molière – Festival 2014) combine their
immense talents in this intriguing blend of courtroom
drama and suppressed romance.
Luchini brings his instantly recognisable brand of
irascible comic weariness to the role of severe judge
Xavier Racine, presiding in a country court over a
tragic murder case. He recognises jury member Ditte
(Knudsen) as the anaesthetist he fell in love with several
years before and, breaking with protocol, he connects
with her outside. In wistful, contemplative dialogue,
the judge softens his heart as they recall a past of
missed opportunities, all while revelations of the
murder unfold.
Fluently directed by Christian Vincent, of such classics
as La Séparation and Haute Cuisine (Festival 2013), the
film manages to be both grittily realistic and gently
thoughtful. Courted was selected for competition in
the Venice International Film Festival in 2015, and now
Australian audiences can enjoy the opportunity of
watching these two masterful performers reach into the
depths of their characters with subtlety and humour.

Taj Mahal presents an edge-of-the-seat journey into
our most contemporary fears, based on the real life
2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks on luxury hotels.
directed by
On the eve of a long, tedious summer vacation,
Microbe (Ange Dargent) and Gasoline (Théophile
Baquet), decide to take their own holiday in a homemade house on wheels as neither want to spend time
with their own families.
18-year-old Louise (Stacy Martin of Nymphomaniac
notoriety), about to begin a new life in India, is left
alone in her hotel room as her parents dine across
town. Without warning, her bored complacency is
shattered by the realisation that the loud noises outside
are actually the sounds of terrorists attacking the hotel.
As she desperately tries to survive alone, the safe haven
of her room grows increasingly under threat.

Gondry has unearthed a fresh talent in the charismatic
Baquet as Gasoline, an inveterate tinkerer uniquely
untroubled by the opinion of his peers. Gasoline quickly
bonds with the timid and introspective Microbe (named
for his diminutive stature), a character quite possibly
based on the director himself. The two have an enthralling
chemistry, lending their friendship an impressive vérité
that gives the film its most touching moments.

This is an artfully observed coming-of-age comedy
by Gondry that eschews his trademark surrealism for
deftly paced, expertly shot character studies of two
likeable non-conformists. Featuring a memorable
against-type performance by Audrey Tautou (Thérèse
Desqueyroux – Festival 2013) as a distracted mother,
Microbe & Gasoline is a ‘fuel-good’ hit.
“Michel Gondry is in
fine form with this
unpretentiously
charming film about
the friendship between
two 12-year-old boys”
10
Microbe & Gasoline is celebrated director Michel
Gondry’s winning portrait of two adolescent outsiders
determined not to follow the herd.

Martin’s performance is a tour de force of control
and depth, as is director Nicolas Saada’s ingenuity in
maintaining suspense from the confines of just one set.
Virtually shot in real-time, this is virtuoso filmmaking,
made all the more compelling by the disturbing context.
Selected for the Venice International Film Festival
in 2015 and featuring superb performances from
Louis-Do de Lencquesaing (Superstar – Festival 2013)
and Gina McKee (In The Loop) as Louise’s parents, this
film will have audiences gripped from beginning to end.

David’s Picks
The iconic actor Vincent Lindon (Augustine – Festival
2013) returns with The Measure of a Man, a moving
social drama that scooped the Best Actor Award at the
Cannes International Film Festival in 2015.
Lindon plays Thierry, a middle-aged man, long out
of work and short on prospects. His is a precarious
existence, surviving with his beloved wife and
developmentally challenged son on meagre state
benefits while subject to the corroding humiliation
of pointless job interviews and skills training. When
Thierry finally does land a job as a Head of Security he
is thrust into a world of stark moral choices in which he
discovers that his job not only pays, it also costs.
Director Stéphane Brizé coaxes assured performances
from an ensemble cast of non-professional actors
who complement the veteran Lindon. With touching
moments of unforced comedy and hand-held camera
techniques, this slice of social realism offers an assured
observation of the life of a man trapped in the fraught
world of the economically marginalised.
The White Knights
Les Chevaliers blancs
Toronto International Film Festival 2015 – Official Selection
In an unnamed African country, the Move For Kids
organisation (based on the real-life Zoe’s Ark) is officially
established to rescue orphans and provide them with a
new life in France. Led by Jacques (Vincent Lindon), it
soon becomes apparent that the organisation’s motives
behind saving the orphans are not always altruistic.
With the line between humanitarian assistance and
human trafficking becoming blurred, the stakes and
risks get higher. But who is right and who is wrong?
As a provocative and urgently current examination of
the sometimes murky moral choices made by NGOs
in strife-torn environments, this is an ambiguous,
disturbing, yet hopeful must-see film.
Shot with shocking immediacy, it vividly evokes the
on-the-ground ethical quagmire with a brilliant cast
and a gripping script, written by director Joachim
Lafosse (Our Children – Festival 2012). With a standout
performance by previous Festival guest Louise
Bourgoin, the film offers no easy answers but rather
leaves it to audiences to decide what to think.

PRIZES COURTESY OF
In 2016, we are bringing new stories and formats to the Alliance Française French Film
Festival with the introduction of five French television series. These series – some of
which are established hits and others that are yet to be released – demonstrate the
diversity of French audiovisual creation, its continuing international development and
are indicative of current viewing trends.
In 2014, export of French television content grew to +17% compared to 2013, generating
an income of 210 million euros, with the biggest, record-breaking growth (+115%)
represented by fiction. Additionally, series like Engrenages, Les Revenants, Un Village
Français have been sold to many foreign countries.
To represent the burgeoning vitality of television production, we have invited Marta
Dusseldorp and Benjamin Winspear to be the patrons of this new category. Through
their careers, Marta and Benjamin embody the creativity and renewal of television
drama, as evidenced by acclaimed shows such as A Place to Call Home, in which they
perform together.
Through their many roles across stage and screen, Marta and Benjamin are great
ambassadors for the audiovisual and performing arts sector and we are very proud
that they have agreed to be involved with us for this edition of the Festival.
The first two episodes of each of our five television shows will be screened as one
session per title.

When the career of politician Philippe (Kad Merad) is ruined by presidential candidate Francis
(Niels Arestrup), he is set on a path of bitter revenge. Making friends in high and low places, and
forging an alliance with his closest advisor, Amélie (Anna Mouglalis), Philippe does daily battle
with his enemies and his own personal demons.
Within the DGSE (the French CIA), the Bureau of Legends is an elite group of deep undercover
assets. When one such agent, Guillaume (Mathieu Kassovitz), returns to Paris after a long
mission in Syria, he is faced with a crisis: he must find another agent operating in Algeria who
has gone off the grid.
For fans of political thrillers such as House of Cards, this engrossing drama is both a suspenseful epic
and a superb character study.
Written by Éric Rochant (The Patriots, Möbius), this exciting look at today’s world of espionage
has plenty of twists and turns, as well as a refreshingly human story at its heart.

Dheepan is a major film event and the winner of the
Palme d’Or at the Cannes International Film Festival in
2015. This blistering slice of realism entrenches director
Jacques Audiard’s status as one of today’s greatest
auteurs, with a unique presentation of the asylum
seeker experience that will move audiences profoundly.
Three strangers in conflict-ridden northern Sri Lanka
band together as a makeshift family in order to flee
to the suburbs of Paris: Dheepan, an ex-Tamil Tiger
(Antonythasan Jesuthasan, author, activist, and former
child soldier); lost young woman Yalini (Kalieaswari
Srinivasan); and orphan girl Illayaal (Claudine
Vinasithamby). As they struggle to find stability, they
are forced to improvise their relationships. Soon they
find they must cope with new violence and intolerance
in their adopted home.
Based on Antonythasan’s own experience, his journey of
self-realisation is a powerful and visceral tale, told with
a timeless classicism that marks the finest world cinema.
As in A Prophet and Rust and Bone, director Audiard
orchestrates creeping menace with an emotional punch
and a complex social message.

Macadam stories

Cannes International Film Festival 2015 – Special Screening
Director and author Samuel Benchetrit brings much of his
autobiographical book Asphalt Chronicles to the screen
as Macadam Stories, a series of interconnected vignettes
set in a public housing complex on the outskirts of Paris.
With a focus on six characters, we meet the pennypinching loaner Sternkowitz (Gustave Kervern from
In The Courtyard – Festival 2015), who forges an unlikely
relationship with a night nurse (Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi).
In another thread, inquisitive adolescent Charly (the
director’s son Jules Benchetrit) and Jeanne (Isabelle
Huppert), an ageing movie star, form a bond that
changes them both for the better. In the final instalment,
American astronaut, John McKenzie (Michael Pitt)
accidentally lands on the apartment of a migrant,
Mrs Hamida, and the pair communicate through
fractured French while NASA busily stages a cover up.
Deadpan and often droll, the film recalls the entertaining
style of Jim Jarmusch, with an undercurrent of quirky
and satisfying sight gags. Macadam Stories was part of
the Official Selection for the Cannes International Film
Festival in 2015, and received glowing reviews from
several French critics. It is sure to equally charm this
year’s Festival audience.

The multi-talented actor/writer/director Maïwenn has
followed up her gritty drama Polisse with Mon Roi.
This is an impeccably nuanced dissection of a volatile
marriage between two Parisians, played by Vincent
Cassel and Emmanuelle Bercot, who won the award for
Best Actress at the Cannes International Film Festival in
2015 for this performance.
The film follows a lawyer, Tony (Bercot), who is admitted
to a rehab centre following a skiing accident, where
she soon finds herself overly reliant on medication
and carers. While recuperating, she reflects on her
relationship with ex-husband Georgio (Cassel),
prompted by the observation of a therapist that her
accident may not have been as accidental as it seemed.
Tony recalls the trajectory of her relationship with
Georgio, from its lust filled beginnings to the
deteriorating dynamic that inevitably dooms the
couple, and their son, to a maelstrom of hurt, anger
and broken trust.
Allowing her actors to improvise within defined
parameters, Maïwenn has elicited striking performances
that render Mon Roi as a powerful and deeply
affecting film.

Valley of love
Valley of love
Cannes International Film Festival 2015 – Official Selection
Two of French cinema’s greatest stars – remarkably,
sharing the screen for the first time in over 30 years
– unite for this haunting and moving tale of love,
loss, memory and the mystical, which received its
World Premiere in Official Competition at the Cannes
International Film Festival in 2015.
The extraordinary Isabelle Huppert and an irrepressibly
in-form Gérard Depardieu play a former couple
who reunite in the grand landscape of Death Valley,
following a mysterious summons from their long-dead
son. The couple’s past and their unresolved feelings
play out in hotel rooms, restaurants and among the
desert perspectives of Nevada, as they move towards
a mysterious epiphany that powerfully echoes Peter
Weir’s Picnic at Hanging Rock.
Perfectly orchestrated by director Guillaume Nicloux,
this superb two-hander is touching, playful, grand and
tender, as the two performers, partly playing versions
of themselves, discover a new chemistry as they muse
on the past, the present and their own changes, both
spiritual and physical.
Visually beautiful and deeply resonant, Valley of Love is
a memorable cinematic duet played by major virtuosos.

his own frothy script with a knack for drawing the

Demoustier again shows why she draws comparisons

Love, love, love
Blind Date
Un peu, beaucoup, aveuglément
COLCOA French Film Festival 2015 – Winner of Audience Award
A headlong dive into the depths of teenage sexuality,
Eva Husson’s dreamlike debut seems destined to
be considered one of the great films about sex.
Controversial and undeniably erotic – you won’t be
able to stop talking about it ... once you’ve caught
your breath!
Prepare yourself for the unlikeliest of rom-com
scenarios, in which the two would-be lovers not only
don’t meet or see each other, but agree to not even
know each other’s names! This unique feat is carried
off with aplomb in Festival-favourite and César Award
winning actor Clovis Cornillac’s debut as a director.
A quartet of tension starts between best friends George
(Marilyn Lima in her first film) and Laetitia (Daisy Broom,
television’s Spiral) and two of their male schoolmates
Alex (Finnegan Oldfield) and Nikita (newcomer Fred
Hotier). Mind games soon begin between brooding
Alex and hungry George, and feeling spurned, George
decides upon an extravagantly risky way of making
Alex jealous. She initiates an informal program of
orgies after school, that before long take on a life
beyond what she had hoped.
Cornillac (Tour de Force – Festival 2014) himself plays an
obsessive designer of ingenious puzzles who demands
absolute silence to work. The tranquil solitude of his
ivory tower of an apartment is shattered when an
attractive young pianist (Mélanie Bernier) moves next
door to practice for a life-changing competition. An
intriguing relationship develops either side of the
thin wall separating them as they overcome obstacles
placed by themselves in mutual agreement.
Echoing Larry Clark’s Kids and the trancelike films
of Sofia Coppola, Husson shows and tells without
judgement or excuse, offering a brave and illuminating
window into an unknown world. The young actors
provide nuanced performances against the backdrop
of Biarritz, while the soundtrack features the uber-hip
artiste, White Sea.
A clear winner of the Audience Award at the COLCOA
Festival, this sheer delight of a film boasts charming
performances from the two leads and beautifully
contrived design that makes the most of the small-scale
setting. Opposites attract not just each other, but also
hilarious and surprising complications in this delightful
and laugh-filled movie.

Cannes International Film Festival, Directors’ Fortnight 2015 – Opening Night
Toronto International Film Festival 2015 – Official Selection
Titan of French cinema Philippe Garrel again casts his
penetrating eye over the intricacies of love, infidelity
and the male ego in this rich and complex drama,
which was selected to open Directors’ Fortnight at the
Cannes International Film Festival in 2015.
“Cécile De France and
Albert Dupontel are
undeniably magnetic”
Beloved actor Albert Dupontel plays Marc, a stunt rider
crippled from an accident while filming. Glamourous
insurance assessor Florence (the radiant Cécile De
France) takes on his case. But a simple settlement seems
distant as Marc’s stubborn dignity draws Florence
to him, and an unlikely love affair blossoms. As both
realise how their lives have strayed, they reassess what
truly matters.
Against exquisite, loving photography of Paris, the film
explores the romantic and professional relationship
of documentary filmmakers Pierre (Stanislas Merhar,
Almayer’s Folly) and Manon (Clotilde Courau, Babysitting
– Festival 2015). Pierre embarks on an affair with young
intern Elisabeth (debutante Lena Paugam), and revels
in his newfound love triangle. Yet Pierre soon discovers

Featuring stunning photography of horse training and
stunt riding, director Denis Dercourt weaves a gripping
tale of two unlikely lovers, broken by circumstance, yet
uniting to regain some control over their destiny. The
versatile and brilliant Dercourt moves on from the dark
style that saw his earlier films such as The Page Turner,
which was selected at the Cannes International Film
Festival in 2006 for Un Certain Regard – and embraces
a gutsy and emotionally powerful melodrama.
Courau and Paugam shine in their strong and nuanced
roles, while Merhar fearlessly portrays wounded
masculinity. Masterfully structured, elegant and
unflinching, few directors have such ability to tunnel
beneath the surface of relationships between men and
women and reveal the depths of jealousy and resilience
at the core. This is another late highlight of Garrel’s
extraordinary career, and contemporary French cinema
at its very best.

Love, love, love
The award-winning new film by Catherine Corsini,
La Belle Saison is a luminous and evocative romance that
powerfully depicts a story of the love, duty and courage
required to pursue happiness, no matter what the cost.
1971. Delphine (Izïa Higelin), a twenty-something farm
girl, takes a huge step by packing up and moving to
Paris, searching for a life beyond the responsibilities
of her upbringing. It’s not long before she is drawn
to the dynamic Carole (an extraordinary Cécile De
France), who is actively involved in the emerging
feminist movement. The two women quickly fall head
over heels and become inseparable, but their bliss is
interrupted when an emergency forces Delphine back
to the farm and her mother (Noémie Lvovsky, Rosalie
Blum – Festival 2016), and Carole follows. There, the
couple have to face a far different reality…
Featuring stunning production design that indelibly
captures both the beauty of the French regions and
the vibrant streets of Paris in the 70s, the film invites
audiences to bask in the glow of all-consuming passion.
With radiant performances and impeccable direction,
this is French cinema at its absolute finest.

My Golden Days
Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse
Cannes International Film Festival 2015 – Directors’ Fortnight & Winner of SACD Prize
The latest idiosyncratic masterwork from the much
fêted auteur, Arnaud Desplechin, is a sincere paean
to memories of adolescent romance which is by turns
wistful and rueful. A prequel to his earlier My Sex Life…
or How I Got Into an Argument, it won the SACD prize
at the Directors’ Fortnight of the Cannes International
Film Festival in 2015.
Mathieu Amalric (Venus In Fur – Festival 2014) reprises
his earlier role as Paul Dédalus, as he recalls his early
blossoming of love as a teenager, who is played by
Quentin Dolmaire – an incredible discovery in his
first film. His awkwardly charming flirtations with the
beautiful Esther (Lou Roy-Lecollinet, also making her
debut) result in a life-defining affair, that is tested by
Paul’s leaving rural France to study in Paris. In two other
distinct episodes, Paul also remembers elements of his
childhood, and a thrilling school trip journey to Russia
involving passport espionage with a local Jewish boy.
The luminosity of memory is superbly evoked by
Irina Lubtchansky’s iridescent photography. A triumph
of human emotion, My Golden Days is a deeply
moving experience.

Love, love, love
In the final months of the First World War, cavalry
officer Charles (Olivier Gourmet, The Gate – Festival
2015) contemplates his future after losing his leg
in battle. Angèle (Georgia Scalliet) is his home-care
nurse, recently widowed by the continuing conflict.
After Angèle accepts Charles’ proposal of marriage
without passion, their own battle begins as they come
to terms with their fate and how to find some version
of mutual happiness.
Writer and director Gilles Legrand (You Will Be My Son –
Festival 2012) brings an intuitive and impassioned vision
to this richly drawn study in raw, real emotions. A frank
empathy comes across throughout, from the earthily
shot sequences of Charles re-learning to ride his
beloved horses to the evocative physicality of Angèle
and Charles’ intimate love scenes.
Scalliet is remarkable, drawing out the strong feminist
elements that pervade the film, and playing against
familiar face Gourmet with spark and intelligence.
With a military inflected score by regular Legrand
collaborator Armand Amar, this is a striking reflection
on the Great War.

In Un Plus Une, the prolific and revered director Claude

The Artist) and Elsa Zylberstein (César Award winner
for I’ve Loved You So Long, also in Gemma Bovery –
Festival 2015), this is a film of incredible pedigree and

Dujardin plays a cynical film composer, Antoine,
who has been sent to Mumbai to score a high-profile
Bollywood project. When he meets the Ambassador’s
wife, Anna (Zylberstein), he is drawn into a new world
of spirituality and living for the moment.
Antoine and Anna’s simmering mutual attraction is
portrayed with intelligent subtlety and realism by
the two stellar leads, with the legendary Christopher

It is 1890 and Anton Chekhov (Nicolas Giraud) is a doctor,
working hard and earning a meagre wage, which he
supplements by writing sketches for newspapers under
a pseudonym. He shares a small house with his adoring
siblings, including Macha (Lolita Chammah, rising star
and Isabelle Huppert’s daughter), whose friend Lika

One day, Chekhov receives a visit from a publisher, who
takes his writings to a wider audience, winning both
Tolstoy’s praise and the coveted Pushkin Prize.

This compelling documentary reveals a forgotten
chapter in the history of cinema and our collective
human diversity, as documented in the remarkable
footage shot by a forgotten French cinematic pioneer.
Wealthy Marguerite Dumont (the multi-award winning
Catherine Frot) loves to sing passionately for an avid
crowd of friends and devotees. The only problem is
she’s terrible!
Using incredibly rare footage, this revelatory film
showcases the globe-trotting work of the brother of
early cinema icon Georges Méliès, Gaston. From 1912
to 1913, Gaston sailed and filmed throughout the Pacific,
to Polynesia, New Zealand, Australia, Java, Singapore,
Cambodia, and finally, Japan. His films were among
the first to cast indigenous people in fiction roles and
included many films shot around Sydney, Brisbane and
Cairns. Extremely prolific, Gaston shot over 64 films,
of which few survive.
Marguerite is kept in the dark about her extreme lack
of talent by her husband (André Marcon, Tour de Force
– Festival 2014) and butler (Denis Mpunga, Dead Man
Talking). However, an unexpected rave review leads
her to plan a public recital – so how can the charade
possibly continue?
This is the extraordinary story of a fearless individual
who, with his wife Hortense, helped redefine what could
be achieved with the medium of cinema. Transporting
the viewer into a time and place rarely seen, this is an
unmissable experience for all who love film and its
capacity to empower and record history.

As a web of deceit and delusion unfolds, Marguerite’s
mammoth performance will fascinate, appal and
amuse, often all at once. Based on the notoriously
awful vocal career of Florence Foster Jenkins, director
Xavier Giannoli has made a delectably sharp and
mischievous satire which is the opposite of his previous
serious exploration of music performance, The Singer.
A merciless dissection of class pretensions, this was
a resounding favourite on the Lido at the Venice

Consummately filmed, richly complex and cringingly
hilarious, this is one for all lovers of fine cinema done

This sumptuous period crime film is set amongst the
burgeoning anarchist movement at the close of the
19th century. Boasting glamourous stars, costumes
and style, The Anarchists premiered as the opening
film for the Critics’ Week at the Cannes International
Film Festival in 2015.
Director Elie Wajeman tells a streamlined tale of an
undercover cop Jean (Tahar Rahim, Grand Central –

climbing the ranks of his career. As he becomes more
immersed, his loyalties come under question from all
sides, not least due to his attraction to the ringleader’s
lover Judith (the stunning Adèle Exarchopoulos from Blue
Is The Warmest Colour). The two generate a palpable
chemistry as Jean plays an ever more dangerous game.
No ordinary period piece, the film is filled with modern
touches, from a rock and reggae soundtrack to up-tothe-minute dialogue and stylised costuming. The cast
also features memorable performances from Swann
Arlaud (Get Well Soon – Festival 2015) as the leader of
the anarchists and Guillame Gouix (The Connection –

Brilliant young actor Pierre Niney (It Boy – Festival

in this nail-biting thriller of an untenable double life.
The second film by writer-director Yann Gozlan evokes
the claustrophobic suspense of the novels of Patricia
Highsmith to create a superbly Ripley-esque experience.
Niney plays no-hoper writer Mathieu who finds a
completed manuscript of a novel while working as a
removalist on a deceased estate. Passing the work off
as his own, he is suddenly transported into a realm of
success, celebrity and love – but also an impossibleto-fill expectation for his second novel. Faced with the

wealth of her parents, played by André Marcon (Tour

Temperatures and tempers rise in a small, southern
French town in this disturbing and compelling thriller,
written and directed with menace and panache by
Raphaël Jacoulot (The Night Clerk). Get ready to be

vigilante style.
Academy Award® winner Juliette Binoche (Paris,
Je T’Aime – Festival 2015) gives one of the finest
performances of her career in this dazzling debut
feature from wunderkind Piero Messina, who previously
worked as the assistant director on Paolo Sorrentino’s
Oscar® winning The Great Beauty.
Rising star Karim Leklou delivers a breakout performance
as the deeply troubled Josef, an outsider in his own
town, whose behaviour becomes more and more erratic
and threatening. But as the hot weather wears on and
the villagers’ patience wears thinner, questions are
raised. Is Josef just a scapegoat for the villagers’ sins?
And does he deserve to be punished – or even killed?
In a beautiful Sicilian villa, Anna (Binoche) receives an
unexpected guest. Twenty-something Jeanne (Lou de
Laâge, Breathe – Festival 2015) has arrived from Paris,
declaring herself to be the girlfriend of Anna’s son,
Giuseppe, who has invited her to spend Easter together.
But this is news to Anna, and Giuseppe is not yet there.
A masterclass in tension and atmosphere, this tale of a
town morally wilting in the heat is destined to generate
its own heated debate long after the final scenes.
Rarely has the French countryside seemed so brightly
lit and exposed, serving as a perfect backdrop to a
fantastic spectrum of complex characters who are all
vividly brought to life by a great ensemble cast.
Despite the disruption, Anna invites her to stay, and as
the two women await Giuseppe’s arrival, they begin to
form a connection. Jeanne gives in to the charms of the
island, while Anna comes out of her shell. Yet her son’s
absence remains unexplained…
Stunningly shot and performed against a spectacular backdrop, Messina and his brilliant leads navigate a
complex range of emotions in this entrancing tale of two
women from different generations. The film gradually coils

All Three of Us
Nous trois ou rien
Stand-up comic sensation Kheiron directs and stars in
this inspiring and hilarious retelling of his extraordinary
family journey from the tumult of Iran in the late 70s to
the feverish melting pot of suburban Paris.
Kheiron warmly balances sweet comedy and tough
honesty when dealing with the realities of violenceriddled Tehran. He plays his own father, Hibat, a lawyer
and eventual political prisoner under the Shah who was
released by the Ayatollah. The intolerant climate forces
him to flee through Turkey with his wife Fereshteh
(the breathtaking Leïla Bekhti from All That Glitters –

spirit of rebellion and joie de vivre continues as they
make their mark in the migrant suburb of Pierrefittesur-Seine.
Featuring wonderfully funny scenes of family life

drawn into this incredible story of tenacity and love.
Hibat’s parents are played by the much-loved Gérard

Meek, mild, single and wealthy, Paul-André (Benoît
Poelvoorde, 3 Hearts – Festival 2015) reaches 40 and
realises his life is missing something essential – the
experience of having a family. Vivacious vegetable
sculptor and single mother Violette (Virginie Efira, It Boy
– Festival 2014) has a family but no money, and could
actually lose her house and kids if her fortunes don’t
turn around. The two broker an unlikely and innocent
deal – her debts paid by Paul-André in exchange for
renting her family!
In this hyper-colourful comedy of love and the modern
family, versatile director Jean-Pierre Améris (Romantics
Anonymous – Festival 2012) pays exuberant homage to
the great screwball comedies of the 30s and 40s. Efira
delivers a winning performance that is somehow both
vulgar and elegant, while Améris regular Poelvoorde is
hilarious as the tightly wound Paul-André.
Family for Rent is a stylised and charming rom-com for

bring to love late in life, and also delivers a very funny
film in the process.
First Growth
Premiers Crus
Bursting with sumptuous cinematography of the
vineyards of Burgundy, an assured cast and a feel-good
script, First Growth is vintage French film-making about
the art of making wine.
The story concerns Charlie, the son of a wine grower who
left his vineyard home to become a renowned Parisian
oenologist and the author of a hugely successful wine
guide. When Charlie returns to help his family’s failing
enterprise he struggles with temperamental weather,
a delicate grape and the doubts of his father (Gérard
Lanvin, Get Well Soon – Festival 2015). Can the wine
critic become a wine producer?
This is a delightful and rewarding film from director
Jérôme Le Maire, which lovingly captures today’s
professional world of winemaking and the challenges
each new generation must face. Lanvin is particularly
affecting as the gruff patriarch who has become
disillusioned with wine. A well-made film with lots of
body and a perfect finish, First Growth is a film to be
enjoyed with friends.

Veteran star Claude Brasseur plays the cantankerous
Henri of the title in this riotous comedy of bad
manners and good intentions. Bitterly opposed to the
relationship between his son Paul (television comic
Guillaume de Tonquédec) and the flighty Valérie
(Frédérique Bel), Henri strikes upon a devious plan.
He offers free board to attractive student Constance
(vivacious newcomer Noémie Schmidt), who, desperate
to make her own way, agrees to use her charms to drive
the couple apart.
What ensues is classic farce material with a whirlwind of
uproarious misunderstandings and awkward situations.
Yet despite the wry cynicism at the beginning, there is
still a sweet and uplifting message at its core – follow
your dreams and don’t waste a minute.
César award-winning director Ivan Calbérac has
adapted his own stage hit to the screen with
triumphant results, in a top example of the Paris
boulevard comedy style. In a uniformly superb cast,
honours go to Brasseur, who is a hoot as the old coot.
Uproarious fun from start to finish, this is bound to be
an audience favourite.

Seamless and sleek, Chic! is a hilarious and romantic
romp that tears through the fabric of the Parisian

Superstar Fanny Ardant shows off her gift for largerthan-life comedy as Alicia Ricosi, an iconic designer and
colossal drama queen. Bereft of inspiration following a
break-up, the only thing between her and a disastrous
show is the savoir-faire of high-powered corporate
Hélène (Marina Hands, seen in the hit racing drama
Jappeloup – Festival 2014).

Career-saving romance for Alicia beckons with the
arrival of gardener Julien (César Award winner for
Gainsbourg, Éric Élmosnino) – but what if Julien melts
the ice cold heart of Hélène as well?
Supremely stylish and polished, Chic! boasts the brilliant
talents of writer Jean-Paul Bethany and director Jérôme
Cornuau, filmed in stunning locations around Paris and
Brittany. This is a film that manages to both poke fun
at and revel in the nerve-wracking thrill of the catwalk
scene, with Ardant’s sublimely funny performance a
true tour de force.

A remake of the Québécois smash of 2003, La Grande
Séduction, this feel-good comedy of city/country
incompatibilities boasts an all-star cast of France’s most
talented comic actors.
Faced with the imminent closure of the local salmon
smoking factory, the mayor (Didier Bourdon of comedy
trio Les Inconnus) needs to do something drastic to save
his town. An insurance company offers financial rescue,
on the condition of having a live-in doctor. Enter shady
Parisian plastic surgeon Maxime (Lorànt Deutsch, You
Will Be My Son – Festival 2012). Disdainful of country
ways, it will take all of the smarts of the townsfolk to
succeed as they enact an elaborate ruse to keep him in
their sleepy hamlet.
With beautiful scenery of the Pyrenees peaks and
lakes as a backdrop, respected television director and
journalist Stéphane Meunier has made a confident leap
to comedy, and allowed great actors such as Denis
Podalydès (The Officer’s Ward – Festival 2015) and
Lionnel Astier (Asterix – the Mansions of the Gods –
Festival 2015) to hilariously let loose.
*Patrons under 15 years must be accompanied by an adult.
Julie Delpy writes, directs and stars in this stupendously
funny comedy of a later-life love affair thwarted by
an extremely possessive adult son. Delpy’s fourth film
as director since 2 Days In Paris shows that she is
among the best of today’s comic filmmakers, delivering
constant laughs and tremendous characters.
Delpy plays the neurotic Parisian sophisticate and
divorcee, Violette, who while on holiday finds new love
with an IT boffin, Jean-René (comedy icon Dany Boon,
Superchondriac – Festival 2015). When Jean-René joins
her in Paris, all seems perfect – but for the insistent
campaign of sabotage by Violette’s 19-year-old son, Lolo
(a terrifically louche Vincent Lacoste, Eden – Festival 2015).
Also starring Karin Viard (Almost Friends – Festival
2015) as Violette’s happily brazen best friend Ariane,
this brilliantly paced film is full of plausibly awkward
situations and witty observations on family ties.
Boon, himself a talented writer-performer-director,
plays straight to Delpy’s hysterical hypochondriac, and
the film features surprising cameos from the likes of
Karl Lagerfeld and novelist Frédéric Beigbeder. Equal
parts hilarious and honest; Lolo is a comedy highlight
of the year.

This gem of a romantic comedy pairs Isabelle Carré and
Patrick Bruel for the first time on the big screen, in a
gentle look at love and becoming a parent later in life.
Gabrielle (Carré, Marie’s Story – Festival 2015) is a
single mother of her 17-year-old daughter, Claire
(Alice de Lencquesaing, Tokyo Fiancée – Festival
2015). Claire is pregnant, however the child’s father,
Simon, has no desire to be involved with his future
baby. When Gabrielle takes matters into her own
hands and asks Simon’s father, Ange (Bruel), for help,
an unexpected relationship begins.
This light-hearted film is based on a play by Murielle
Magellan smartly adapted by director, Anne Giafferi.
Love at First Child benefits from the natural alchemy
between its two lead actors, with Bruel effortlessly
combining selfishness and charm, and Carré touching as
a new grandmother trying to keep everything together.
Amid all the laughs are some truthful reflections on
family, fatherhood and life in one’s forties.

One wild moment
Un moment d’égarement
In this classy reimagining of Claude Berri’s classic
film One Wild Moment, two middle-aged men go
on a summer holiday with their teenage daughters.
Strict rules and boredom for the two girls lead to a
complicated liaison that needs to be kept secret – but
the truth will come out, with alarming consequences!
Powerhouse actors Vincent Cassel (The Beauty and the
Beast – Festival 2015) and François Cluzet (Turning Tide
– Festival 2014) share the screen for the first time in
this risqué and intoxicating comedy/drama set on the
exotic Corsican coastline. Their easy-going rapport
completes a fine cast that introduces Lola Le Lann as
the alluring Louna.
Jean-Francois Richet smoothly directs proceedings
with a taste for the luxurious setting, in a change of
pace from his crime epic of 2008, Mesrine, which also
starred Cassel.
A perfect film for lovers of gorgeous scenery and
equally gorgeous performers getting up to no good,
One Wild Moment is the epitome of stylish
entertainment. The pairing of the great Cassel and
Cluzet makes this a Festival highlight.

Giggle & grin
Laurent Lafitte and Marina Foïs (seen in last year’s
Festival films The Easy Way Out and The Ultimate
Accessory) team up for Papa ou Maman, a high
concept, fast moving comedy that puts a new spin on
custody battles.
Florence (Foïs) and Vincent (Lafitte) have the perfect
house, perfect children and perfect careers. All they
need to be happy is the perfect divorce. When both
parents receive job offers that would see them work
abroad, war is declared and the battle is on to gain
everything except custody of their three kids.
Papa ou Maman was penned by the French screenwriting
dream team, Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la
Patellière (What’s in a Name?). This time, the talented
duo has written a script with a more subversive flavour
for the directorial debut of Martin Bourboulon.
Basking in the film’s political incorrectness, Lafitte and
Foïs (and the three enfants terribles), turn in sharp,
comedic performances in this snappily paced,
irreverent comedy that will have audiences laughing all
the way through.
The Brand New Testament is an off-the-wall fantasy
that sees God (Benoît Poelvoorde from last year’s
film, 3 Hearts – Festival 2015) as a curmudgeon from
Brussels whose spiteful excesses are only restrained by
the actions of his plucky 10-year-old daughter, Ea (the
much acclaimed Pili Groyne).
Ea, on the advice of her brother JC, hacks her father’s
computer and sends everyone on Earth a text message
with the date God has planned for their demise.
Pursued by her wrathful father, Ea flees to Earth,
enlisting a bored wife, Martine (Catherine Deneuve),
as one of her disciples. Meanwhile, after God decides
to leave his apartment for the first time he becomes
trapped in the outside world, powerless and alone.
This brisk, idea-laden and absurdist film toys with the
eternal struggle between fate and free will, asking the
question – what would you do if you knew the hour of
your doom?
Directed and co-written by Jaco Van Dormael, The
Brand New Testament scored an Official Selection at
Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes International Film
Festival in 2015 and was nominated for Best Foreign Film
at the Golden Globes in 2016.
