Around 30 “Hams,” as the operators are called, are based in the Spearfish area, said local radio man Bob Weaver. Some are interested in the technical aspect of constructing their radio and perfecting their equipment, while for others it is more about communication. For Weaver it made a career. At age 13 he built a ham radio as part of a radio merit badge for Boy Scouts. “I told my dad, 'this would be fun to get into.'” he said. “It took me a few months, and then I got my first license. It led to my career in electronics. I became a radar technician and started working for RCA as a radar tech right out high school.” Some ham radios are sophisticated enough to send signals internationally. The board also decided against assigning any legislative study committees this year and condensed its own schedule from five meetings to the legal minimum of four. Morocco is an important crossroad between North Africa and Europe. Hence, in my home our family spoke both French and Moroccan Arabic. I lost my father when I was 10 years old and several years later my mother immigrated to Montreal, Canada, with my three siblings and me. This big move was easy for us kids and we adapted quickly to our new culture and new language, English. After graduating from high school in Montreal, I went on to earn a teaching degree from McGill University. I also studied French literature at the University of Montreal Georgette in French and later spent several years teaching French at Fanshawe Ohayon College in London, Ontario. I later took a degree in linguistics and French from the University of Western Ontario, also in London. In 1979, I packed my car with books, bicycles and camping gear and headed west. My goal then was to reach British Columbia, rest awhile with friends there, and then travel on to Mexico where I hoped to perfect my Spanish. However, because it was late in the year, I chose to travel a southerly route, which took me straight through the Black Hills. When I did finally reach the Hills, a sense of calm and well-being came over me. I knew I was home! This year, my husband and I will celebrate the 31-year anniversary of my arrival in this very special realm. Our travels have continued since then as our Vewelry business has taken both of us to India, Thailand, Nepal, and Bali each year. These trips are also a great way for me to continue learning and practicing new and exciting languages. Looking back, even after all these years, I remember one thing that has stayed with me. I recall those first years in See VOLUNTEER — Page 7 ! INDEX LOCAL OBITUARIES STATE EDITORIAL/OPINION MOVIE LISTING HEALTH TV SCHEDULES COMICS LEGALS/CLASSIFIEDS COMMUNITY SPORTS WEATHER ! Pictured are attendees filling up their plates with a German-themed menu. Rotary member and event organizer Angie Black said that she was impressed with the turnout and appreciated everyone coming to support the club. “We made at least $1,000 more than we did last year thanks to the hard work and all of the efforts that the rest of our club members made to make this year a success,” Black said. The event was held at the W.S. Tretheway Pavilion and featured entertainment by the Happy Wanderers. All of the proceeds will go back into the Northern Hills community by supporting area organizations. Club members also took an opportunity to advertise the fact that the club has eight memorial benches available for purchase at $1,500 each and will be displayed at the Northern Hills Rotary Club park along Nash Street in Spearfish. Robert “Bob” Nelson @r. started working as zoning administrator two weeks ago after attending the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. His father, Robert “Bob” Nelson Sr., is the trolley manager for the city. Prior to college, Nelson @r. grew up in Deadwood and said he worked 13 years for the Deadwood Public Works Department in a number of roles: wastewater operator, snow removal and renovations on public buildings such as the Deadwood Rec Center. During the time father and son worked together, junior describes their relationship as professional. “Sometimes we don't have the same viewpoint on things, but sometimes we do,” said Nelson @r. “We come from two generations. I treat him like a co-worker while at work.” During his first two weeks on the job, Nelson has been working on two conditional use permits, easement issues, variance requests and other issues. Nelson @r. works with four others in the zoning and historic preservation department. “The staff that is in this office is incredible, they've really helped me get on my feet,” he said of his new position. One of the things Nelson @r. said he would like to see improvement in is the city's Veographical Information System, or VIS. Deadwood Public Works has their entire infrastructure on VIS, according to Nelson @r. It's basically a computerized area photo of Deadwood marked with diagrams of the wastewater system, streetlights, storm water system and streets. He would like to see more of the zoning department to be integrated into the system, also. “It links information,” Nelson @r. said. “We have a digital map with all the property boundaries, and if you click on a house it will bring up pertinent information. We'd like to see all the information tied to individual parcels and their conditional use permits, building permits, and previous users.” In order to accomplish this, he said a lot of data entry is required. Not everyone returns home after leaving for college, but Nelson @r. described Deadwood as an “incredible community” that he cares enough about to affect positive change in. “It's nice to have a role where maybe you have a litBob Nelson Jr., was recently hired by the city of tle say in what goes on. Pictured are city employees, council members and area residents involved in the evolution of the project at the ribbon cutting. Area residents had an opportunity to tour the building, view the slideshow of the history of the old building and catch up with old friends. The afternoon open house was also an opportunity to recognized Helen Stearns for her 48 years of service to the city of Belle Fourche. Mayor Dave Schneider surprised Stearns who retired from her post as the deputy finance officer for her accomplishments over the years. Shadows of Everest, a tattoo shop that also sells clothing and hemp merchandise, is renovating its new store located next to Visit Spearfish at the intersection of Hudson and Main streets and will open up for business around May 1. “We're really excited for people to come in and enjoy our store with us,” said Cheyenne Esquibel whose husband Matthew is co-owner of the business. “It's just going to be a fun area for everyone.” The store will feature unique men's and women's clothing with lines including Sullen, Seedless, Skin and Wicked @ester. Hemp jewelry will also be sold, along with several prints from Samuel Cory, one of the tattoo artists. Owned by Calvin Iverson and Matthew Esquibel, the artistic atmosphere of the place looks to leave a distinct mark in Spearfish. The duo currently operates a Shadows of Everest Shop in Williston, N.D. as well, and decided to open one up in Spearfish several months ago. “I've been wanting to open one up in Spearfish since I left the area 10 years ago,” Iverson said. “I have an uncle and a couple of friends here as well.” A gaming area will also be assembled in the facility for those waiting for their tattoos or friends to play video games. “Anyone can bring their own games in, or we have a lot of them also,” Iverson said. Three tattoo artists will be featured on a monthly rotation. He felt like he was suffocating, struggling to breathe despite the bullet hole in his chest. Shot in the aorta . near where the bodyEs biggest artery leaves the heart . somehow 1I-year-old Dimitrios Philliou didnEt bleed to death before the ambulance screeched up to the hospital. So doctors took a gambleL Could they save him, not with huge open surgery that itself can kill, but with a patch snaked inside his torn-up aortaN Oore than a caution against kids playing with guns, the fight to save Philliou offers a glimpse into the uncharted territories of emergency medicine, where usually fatal injuries can spark unconventional treatments. QI wouldnEt, didnEt, consider it overly gutsy,Q recalls Dr. Sean OEDonnell, vascular surgery chief at Washington Hospital Center. QItEs just somebody like this doesnEt show up alive.Q His team now is writing up the case for a medical journal, a teachable eRample of how less invasive treatments are starting to play an increasing role even in the aggressive, seconds-count world of trauma care. It started as a typical Saturday night in November S00U, Philliou and some friends hanging out in his familyEs basement in Silver Spring, Od., eating piVVa. Then Philliou showed off the small handgun heEd found, one heEd thought was jammed because he couldnEt get it to fire. But as his friends fooled around, this time the gun went off. The X11 call came around U p.m.L A teen accidentally shot. Emergency workers found Philliou gasping, his skin bluish. They worked a breathing tube down his throat and bypassed suburban hospitals, headed for a Level I trauma center in the nationEs capital that sees a lot of gunshot wounds. Remarkably, Philliou woke up in the ambulance and yanked out his breathing tube. Arriving at Washington Hospital Center, he was coherent enough to answer some questions of trauma nurse Toby ]yle. Oost important, he wasnEt in shock, his blood pressure still O]. Scans showed the bullet hit PhilliouEs aorta twice. Oedical journals make clear that a chest-level injury to this huge blood vessel, which runs from the heart to the groin, is fatal U^ percent of the time. HereEs why Philliou was hanging onL The aorta is shaped like a candy cane, its arch coming out of the top of the heart before curving down. The bullet punctured both the arch of the aorta and a large vein that touches it, making a channel between the two . and because pressure is higher in an artery, blood was flowing back into his own vein, preserving it. QHe was lucky enough it bought him some time,Q says ]yle. Then the bullet eRited from the descending part of the aorta, leaking blood into the chest. Not too long ago, cardiac surgeon Dr. Ammar Bafi would have had one choiceL Cut open the breastbone, deep-cool Philliou, stop his heart and sew up the arch . plus make another big incision on the side of the chest to repair the second hole. He says the operations bring more than a S^ percent risk of death. Artery specialist OEDonnellEs alternativeL FiR the lower hole by threading a sleeve-like stent up through a leg artery and popping it open, blocking the leak with whatEs essentially an artificial lining. Car crashes that throw the driver against the steering wheel can tear that descending part of the aorta, and in S00^ doctors began fiRing those blunt injuries with this kind of graft. OEDonnell bet it would seal the more dangerous penetrating injury of a gunshot, too. It took a graft more than half an inch wide and S inches long to fit this teen athlete, but it worked, stabiliVing him. On to the upper hole. This one sat on a curve, and OEDonnell threaded in a smaller patch but it didnEt form a complete seal. Time to reassess. QWhen they say theyEve never seen this before, it kind of throws you,Q says `im Philliou, the teenEs father, who remembers doctors heading off to brainstorm the neRt step and returning to say, QItEs still ^0-^0, but hereEs what we want to do.Q The neRt day, surgeon Bafi cracked the teenEs chest after all . but the earlier patching meant he could skip stopping the heart for a far safer, easier surgery to seal that remaining hole. Oore than 1^0 children and teens die every year from unintentional firearm injuries, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates nearly a,000 more received emergency room treatment for them in S00U. Philliou had joined the survivorsL Home in a week, and back on the high school football field nine months later. He remembers bits of the trauma . the taste of gunpowder, trying to suck in air, his mother crying. And as he recovered, he says he learned to let go of the anRiety that has characteriVed his teen years. QI always felt socially awkward around a lot of people. ... I was scared of a lot of things,Q says Philliou, whoEs looking forward to college neRt fall. QThis year, IEve actually been happy the entire year.Q With the scar from his heart surgery seen, Dimitiros Philliou, 17, poses for a portrait at his home in Silver Spring, Md., on Saturday, April 17. At age 16 he was shot in the heart and had emergency surgery on his aorta, a surgery seldom performed because most patients bleed out before reaching the hospital. My dad says it’s just puppy love, which may be true, but I have a feeling that I need to be with him. What hurts even more is he had a new girlfriend the next day. I have tried moving on, but I don’t think I want to. I want to try to get back with him, but I don’t know how. Can you help me? S ACHING HEART IN IOWA DEAR ACHING HEART: If your “first kiss” broke up with you and had a new girlfriend the next day, what it shows about him is that he has a short attention span. I know you would like to get him back, but the word from here is: Don’t waste your time. While the end of a romance is painful, chalk it up to experience and a part of growing up. There is no growth without a little pain; and it only hurts for a little while. Trust me on that. Now a little advice womanto-woman: Once it’s over, all the note writing, phoning or conniving will not help your cause. Accept that it’s time to forget him. The longer you linger, the more foolish you will appear. So stand up straight, smile and move on. There are better days S and better boys S ahead. DEAR ABBY: Would you please print this to educate your readers about something I witness every summer S parents encouraging little kids to take native wildlife. I watched a 6-year-old girl show off the two palm-siZed baby turtles her dad had “given” her from the lake, and put them into a plastic container to take home. Abby, they were snapping turtles[ Mom won’t be pleased when those “pets” snap a finger. Then there was the mom who thought it would be fun for her 7-year-old boy to play with a few frogs in their dry, dense, sun-drenched backyard. Within an hour, the amphibians had escaped and, best guess is, they died and became dehydrated, sun-dried critters or dog food. Abby, not only is it illegal to take wildlife on a whim, but it’s also selfish. At a time when we’re already damaging our planet for our recreational pastimes, we need to be teaching our kids that living beings are not toys, but rather a valuable part of natural ecosystems. It’s so much more fun to observe and learn from a turtle swimming free in the lake. Please urge parents to stop being so thoughtless, or they may end up with a ticket or a missing digit. S WILDLIFE PRESERVER IN LAFAYETTE, COLO. DEAR WILDLIFE PRESERVER: Well said. Children S and too many adults S act on impulse when they pick wild plants and flowers, or decide to “adopt” little feral creatures that are destined to die when taken from their natural habitat. Earth Day is April 22 S that’s Thursday S and it offers a chance for all of us to do something positive for the planet. Many parents use it as an opportunity to bond with their children, and some schools offer credit to students who participate. (Hint, hint.) DEAR ABBY: How do you attract single women while on a budget? S GARY IN LONGWOOD, FLA. DEAR GARY: Matinees cost less for admission than late shows, and if there are any museums that are not too far away, check out free museum days. A picnic in the park or a day at the beach doesn’t cost a lot S and neither do outdoor activities such as biking or hiking. You really don’t have to have a lot of money to attract a nice woman. And anyone who makes you feel otherwise is someone you should run from. Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. BLACK HILLS PIONEER Tuesday, April 20, 2010 Page 25 Curves holds 12th annual food drive During the month of March, Curves of Spearfish and Sturgis set out to demonstrate how Curves makes women stronger together by gathering donations for local food banks and showing support for communities. Again this year, clubs collected non-perishable foods and donations for their local food banks. The Spearfish and Sturgis Curves collected almost 1,200 pounds of food for both the Spearfish and Sturgis Food Banks. At the core of the business is the message that women are stronger when they rally together, and that is the point Curves hopes to bring home with the food drive. Curves wants to show the community just how powerful the generosity of members can be. Each year, Curves locations all around the country collectively donate millions of pounds of food to feed the hungry. About 100 people were in attendance on Saturday afternoon, including 1t. Qov. The number indicates the location of the user. “Zero-land” is what ham users call the region of South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Minnesota.Pioneer photo by Kevin Norton old when he built his first ham radio. 3When I was kid it was a big deal to make a long-distance phone call,< he said. 3So it was exciting to get on the radio and talk to someone across the country.< 3I@ve talked to friends from the old Soviet Bnion, China, and South Africa,< said Weaver. 3Like they say, you shouldn@t talk religion or politics F they@re mostly Gust friendly chats.< He added, 3If everyone used a ham radio, there would be a lot more communication between cultures.< Part of the reason for the continuing success of ham radios may be that the licenses are now easier to obtain. A ham operator@s license, which is given by volunteers sanctioned by the Jederal Communications Commission (JCC), no longer reMuires knowledge of Morse code. Nearly 700,000 Americans have ham radio licenses R up 60 percent from 1981, according to an article by npr.org. But there is some debate as to whether the practice will continue to grow. Arne SGomeling, of Deadwood, doesn@t see kids staying involved with ham radios during the age of Jacebook. 3I think there@s a general loss of enthusiasm by younger people,< he said. 3It@s too easy to get a cell phone, or to get online.< Matheson, on the other hand, who has been a 3ham< for 5Z years, believes that future generations will have plenty of new technology to experiment with. 3There@s a lot of activity on the digital band. There@s a lot of new technology there. I think it@s going to evolve. Jor example, technology called SDR R Software Defined Radio R uses computer software to replace a lot of the hardwired radios that we@re familiar with. The meters and dials are all on the computer screen. Which could make it easier for younger people who are more coordinated with computers.< Ham radio users pride themselves on being a service to the country when other methods of communication break down. 3It@s not Gust a hobby, it@s a public service,< said SGomeling. Weaver remembers the days following Hurricane ]atrina in Z00^. 3There were some ham operators down in New Orleans passing messages to people in other parts of the country to let them know how their relatives were.< Also, he said that unlike e-mail and telephones, ham radios do not rely on the power grid. In fact, every June, he and friends have what they call a 3field day,< in which they hook up their radios to their car batteries and test communications from an outdoor location. In ham radio, each user is licensed by the JCC and given a call sign Gust like commercial radio and Ta networks. A call sign consists of letters and one number, for example, Arne SGomeling@s call sign is: ]-0-A-S. The number indicates the location of the user. 3cero-land< is what they call call South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, ]ansas, Missouri and Minnesota. Many ham operators will put their call signs on their car license plates. Although skeptical that younger generations will pick up ham radio, SGomeling notes that ham users were well ahead of the general population in the use of satellites, as well as text-messaging. One example is called APRS (Automatic Position Reporting System), used by people in remote areas to send messages. 3Ham radios have proved their use time and time again, and that@s why we survive,< he said. For more in)ormation on ham radio use, see Wednesday3s B5ac7 Hi55s Pioneer. Page 32 BLACK HILLS PIONEER Tuesday, April 20, 2010
