Greg Hopla and his Knights of the
Realm electrify the audience as the
world’s premier international medieval
experience. The traveling jousting
show roots itself in Brownsville, OR
at Hopla’s hand-made medieval
weapons factory and horse facility,
Swords and Shields.
The World Tournament of Champions
presents the Knights of the Realm travels
locally, nationally, and internationally
to entertain huge crowds at fairs and
festivals. Due to its wild atmosphere,
the show often grabs more attention
than famous headlining singers and
stand-up comedians.
Hopla grabbed the attention of
Medieval Times while at a renaissance
fair in Los Angeles a few decades ago.
His hard work and training with horses
and medieval weapons propelled him
to international fame, leading to his
work in feature films like The Cable
Guy with Jim Carrey.
He started his travelling show
after choreographing medieval
entertainment in Chicago for five
years. Since its inception, Knights
of the Realm has traveled to Mexico,
Puerto Rico, Spain, and other exciting
locations across the world to perform
and inspire large audiences.
Each show consists of the introduction
of five knights, five squires, and the
king, followed by various medieval
games and competitions. Knights slice
watermelons with giant swords in an
accuracy competition to see who can
cut off the thinnest slice. Axe throwers
take aim at assigned targets and
archery competitors shoot carefullytargeted arrows across the stage.
The show’s intensity heightens with
the hard-hitting jousting competition.
Sparks fly during the epic swordfighting battles. After hard-fought
duels, the king crowns the true
champion of the event.
Hopla and his team thrive off of the
crowd’s energy and enthusiasm. With
each heavy blow from a jousting battle
and every spark shower from clashing
sword blades, the crowd’s energy
propels the showmen to continue their
thrilling international escapades.
Realm showmen to push forward
and to continuously brainstorm new
ways to keep the show fresh. Pirate
shows change the format, but the
energy and excitement follow Hopla
wherever he goes.
Along with worldwide adventure,
Knights of the Realm gave Hopla
another exciting opportunity: the
chance to train with his only son.
Dakota Hopla, 22, began training with
his father at a young age and entered
the show about eight years ago.
“How many people get to train their
son like this? It’s so much fun, but I
make him work hard,” said Hopla.
Dakota’s training regiments and
work ethic enhanced his skill set
significantly, making him a premier
knight in the industry.
Hopla’s relaxed demeanor and
electric aura fuel the Knights of the
Knights of the Realm provides
originality in the form of art and
entertainment. The energ y that
Hopla and his crew bring to each
show creates one of the most thrilling
experiences that the world hasn’t
seen since iron-clad knights ruled
the kingdom. ~ Tom Malone

History and General Information
Douglas County was named for U.S. Senator Stephen A. Douglas,
Abraham Lincoln’s opponent in the presidential election of 1860 and
an ardent congressional advocate for Oregon. Douglas County was
created in 1852 from the portion of Umpqua County which lay east
of the Coast Range summit. In 1862, Douglas County absorbed what
remained of Umpqua County.
Douglas County extends from sea level at the Pacific Ocean to 9,182foot Mt. Thielsen in the Cascade Range. The Umpqua River marks the
dividing line between northern and southern Oregon, and its entire
watershed lies within the county’s boundaries. The county contains
nearly 2.8 million acres of commercial forest lands and the largest stand
of old growth timber in the world, which still provides the region’s main
livelihood. Approximately 25 percent of the labor force is employed in
the forest products industry. Agriculture includes field crops, orchards
and livestock. Over 50 percent of the land area of the county is owned
by the federal government.

History and General Information
Named for President Andrew Jackson, Jackson County was formed in
1852 from Lane County and the unorganized area south of Douglas
and Umpqua Counties. It included lands which now lie in Coos,
Curry, Josephine, Klamath and Lake Counties. The discovery of gold
near Jacksonville in 1852 and completion of a wagon road, which
joined the county with California to the south and Douglas County to
the north, brought many pioneers.

History and General Information
Lane County was named for General Joseph Lane, a rugged frontier
hero who was Oregon’s first territorial governor. Pioneers traveling
the Oregon Trail in the late 1840s came to Lane County mainly
to farm. The county’s first district court met under a large oak tree
until a clerk’s office could be built in 1852. A few years later, the
first courthouse opened in what is now downtown Eugene. With
the building of the railroads, the market for timber opened in the
1880s. Today, wood products are still an important part of the
economy in addition to high-tech manufacturing and tourism. Lane
County government operates under a home rule charter approved
by voters in 1963.

LINN-BENTON COUNTIES
The Saloon itself was renovated
from an old Confectionary
Store into a Saloon in 194546. There are local regulars
who frequent the Saloon today
who were patrons back when
it originally opened.
Welcome
There have been no deaths or
murders recorded at the Saloon.
The current owner requested
a ghost investigation due to
unsettled and uneasy feelings
she has encountered while
alone in the building. Other
than “sensing” presences,
there have only been a few
experiences that could be
considered paranormal such as
the following:
An entire block of businesses
including the current site of
the Brownsville Saloon was
burned to the ground in 1935.
The legend is that a woman
had poisoned her husband
with rat poison and then was
seeking to destroy the purchase
records from the business she
had purchased it from.
The staff is unable to keep a
mirror hung in the kitchen
area; every mirror hung there
has fallen off the wall while no
one was present. An employee
watched a cup appearing to
be flung off of a counter.
Witnesses outside the Saloon
after hours said they saw a man
in a long black coat and black
hat walk out of the Saloon and
then cross the street before
disappearing
completely
through the walls of the Pioneer
Antique Store. Another local
patron, who attests to psychic
abilities, claims to have seen
the apparition of this “man in
black” in the Saloon itself.
Following an investigation,
to Brownsville!
Brownsville is one of the
oldest towns in Oregon State,
settled in 1846. The economy
revolved around logging and
the town’s woolen mills.
Portions of the film “Stand By
Me” were filmed in the town of
Brownsville. Actor Sam Elliott
and his wife, actress Katharine
Ross, also live in Brownsville.
44
LINN-BENTON COUNTIES
there
were
two
more
experiences- a lit candle was
caught just in time as it was
teetering on the edge of a
counter as if someone was
getting ready to let it drop.
Also, that same night after
the Saloon had closed and
everything had been turned
down for the night, the owner
felt a heat emanating from
the kitchen area, and upon
inspection was shocked to find
that one of the grill burners
had been turned back up on
HIGH all on its own.
he hasn’t had any problems
with the owners- they have
all been men...
Story continues on every menu at
the Brownsville Saloon or online
at brownsvillesaloon.com
The Brownsville Saloon is a
friendly, low key, neighborhood
tavern, with very good food.
They have lottery games
inside, as well as a few pool
tables. Ask the bartender for
her special “Tuaca” drink - it’s
yummy good! :) Please don’t
bother the owner or employees
of this busy tavern to ask for
a tour of the place, although
I’m sure she’d be more than
happy to talk about her ghostly
experiences with you.
There were three ghostly
presences that were picked up at
this Saloon upon arrival. There
was
what
appeared to be
an unstable,
bordering on
emotionally
abusive man
whose facial
expressions
appeared
drawn
and
hardworking.
This
man
considered
himself in
control
of
the place and
has felt like
this for quite
some
time.
Until recently,
Other interesting and historic
places to visit in Brownsville
include a wonderful historical
museum on the corner of
Main Street and Park Avenue,
and don’t forget to take the
weekend tour of the Moyer
House, a beautiful 1881 villastyle home, located across the
street (no, it’s not haunted,
but it’s really neat inside)!
Awesome Oregon history awesome stuff!

Kirk’s Ferry Trading Post accepts reservations and
walk-ins. Come experience the history, horsemanship, and
hospitality that the family-owned restaurant will provide.
Along with the cabin, Kirk’s legacy of serving Brownsville
still stands in the same location after 150 years.
K irk’s Ferry Trading Post has began to surround the trading post
a story to tell. Its history begins
before Oregon became a state
and it remained undiscovered for
nearly 150 years.
After a tumultuous journey across
the Oregon Trail, Alexander Kirk
settled in Brownsville, Ore. with
plans to build a ferry across the
Calapooia River. He constructed
a log cabin near one end of the
ferry crossing and established a
trading post in it. Homesteads
and, soon enough, Brownsville
sprouted.
Greg Hopla’s great grandparents
bought the property in the
late 1800s and it has stayed in
the family since, but the cabin
remained hidden. Decades of
trading allowed former owners to
build additional rooms onto the
cabin, eventually masking it from
the outside world. After nearly
150 years, Hopla uncovered
LINN-BENTON COUNTIES
the original lost cabin and the
authentic trading post ledger with
Kirk’s prices and products.
Shortly after Hopla’s discovery,
HGTV announced its search for
historic Oregon structures for a
show featuring old Oregon homes.
Hopla called and the camera crew
rushed to Brownsville to validate
and film one of the oldest standing
structures in the state.
Hopla gained international fame for
his displays of expert horsemanship
and medieval weapons ability. He
choreographed fight scenes for
feature films (The Cable Guy
with Jim Carrey) and established
a traveling medieval fighting show
that took him all over the world.
His world travels brought him back
to Brownsville, where he personally
built a restaurant with Kirk’s
original cabin encased inside the
establishment as the centerpiece.
Kirk’s Ferry Trading Post entertains
the audience with wildly exciting
horsemen shows while they dine
around Kirk’s original cabin.
Hopla creates a fun atmosphere in
which he educates restaurant-goers
about Oregon history, entertains
through his international horseman
expertise, and provides genuinely
delicious food.
The menu features pizza, steak,
and everything in between. The
restaurant includes an authentic
wood-fire pizza oven and a full bar
made from Oregon quilted maple.
Hopla refurbished the 150-year-old
woodwork by hand in his sawmill
on the property, where he crafted
floors, furniture, and décor.
A live band enhances the alreadyexciting atmosphere, playing
everything from old western folk
to modern rock. The horseman
show will evolve regularly to ensure
that visitors see a variety of shows
with each new stop at Kirk’s Ferry
Trading Post.
The restaurant features a gift shop
with handmade gifts from the
workshop on the property. All gifts
originate from Oregon products.
Hopla will open Kirk’s Ferry
Trading Post for reserved parties,
events, fundraisers, etc. He plans
to host special events during
holidays to provide entertainment
and build new family traditions on
his property.
Kirk’s Ferry Trading Post accepts
reservations and walk-ins. Hopla
wants everyone to experience
the history, horsemanship, and
hospitality that the family-owned
restaurant will provide. Along with
the cabin, Kirk’s legacy of serving
Brownsville still stands in the same
location after 150 years.

he Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community
Center, which opened on September 29, 2009, is a $40
million, state-of-the-art community complex in northeast
Salem built to inspire – helping children and families in
need by giving opportunities to swim, learn music, play,
dance or study in a top-notch setting.
T
The only Kroc facility in the Pacific Northwest spans 10.65
acres adjacent to a 22 acre city owned wet-land park. The
quality design of the building reflects Joan Kroc’s desire
to offer underserved children an opportunity to excel while
experiencing an environment of excellence. The 92,000
square foot, LEED certified facility features a water park including a waterslide, lazy river and splash pads, Junior
Olympic Competition pool, fitness center, gymnasium,
community room, amphitheatre, child care, and Chapel/
Performing Arts Center.
Visitors are welcome to experience the Kroc Center. A day
pass for those 17 and under is $5.00 and for adults over 17$7.00. Memberships are also sold and paid for on a month
to month basis. Youth, 17 and under pay $15.00/month.
Adults pay $25.00/month. Families of 4 or 5 pay no more
than $75.00 month, while larger families pay an additional
$10.00 per person over 5 family members. While there is a
registration fee required, the Kroc Center does not require
members to enter into a long term contract.
We are open 5:30am to 10:00pm, Monday through Friday;
7:00am to 10:00pm on Saturdays and 1:00pm to 7:00pm
on Sundays. It is strongly advised to call the center
(503-566-5762) to make sure of open swim availability, or
pool and group exercise schedules can be found online at
www.salemkroc.org. Check the website for directions to
the Center.
Major Jerry Ames, Marion/Polk County Coordinator for The
Salvation Army gives his sincere appreciation to the many
who donated their time, talent and finances to this project.
He states, “Thanks to the vision and generosity of Joan Kroc
and the support of literally thousands of local individuals,
organizations, foundations and businesses we have been
able to offer recreation, fitness, fine arts and wellness in a
state of the art facility to children and families regardless of
income… a place where kids and adults can grow and learn
and be the person God made them to be.”

The OREGON COAST
+ Historic Nye Beach
By: Tom Malone
Oregonians
treasure their scenic
coastal towns and counties. The
picturesque cliffs, the vast sandy
beaches, and the lush forests that
surround the area make the Oregon
Coast a gift to any onlooker, not to
mention the never-ending view of the
powerful Pacific Ocean.
The coast offers a relaxing atmosphere
that the whole family can enjoy. The
area provides travelers with a perfect
opportunity for a laid back getaway
and gives residents a fun place to
call home.
The Oregon Coast contains a wide
range of activities to ensure that each
visitor and resident can enjoy the
natural beauty that it exudes. With
363 miles of Pacific Ocean coastline,
the possibilities appear endless.
Brave sports fans enjoy surfing in the
cold southern water and playing on
world-renowned golf courses along
the way. Outdoor adventurers frequent
the Oregon Coast Trail and Florence’s
famous sand dunes. Families pack
the fun arcades in Seaside and
Lincoln City, while nature observers
flock to Cannon Beach’s Haystack
Rock. Curious animal enthusiasts visit
Newport’s Oregon Coast Aquarium,
while plenty of travelers simply get
away to play in the sand near a
smaller coastal town.
Just minutes from Newport, historic Nye
Beach nestles itself between the Pacific
Ocean and Highway 101. This small
coastal town exemplifies the quaint
portrait of a beach destination that
travelers and residents look for when
experiencing the Oregon Coast.
Nye Beach boasts delicious, authentic
seafood restaurants that rival the best
on the coast. An Irish pub provides
a new flavor to the typical seafood
restaurant line-up while instilling a
family-friendly atmosphere. Cafes
open for the casual morning coffee
drinker and the sports restaurant
offers a perfect place for the whole
family to watch the big game. In true
Oregon Coast fashion, the ice cream
and fudge shop makes a great postmeal stop.
Small coastal art graces the storefront
windows of the artists’ shops and
studios. Oregon Coast gift shops and
toy stores allow for hours of browsing
and fun-filled playtime.
Nye Beach offers easily-accessible
vacation
home
rentals
that
accommodate the whole family (and
more). Beachfront hotels, condos, and
bed and breakfast rooms are available
as well.
Less than an hour’s drive from Corvallis,
Nye Beach provides any visitor or
resident with an ideal experience at
the Oregon Coast. Its vivid viewpoints
and famed lighthouse will entrance
any onlooker and convey the power
of the scenic Oregon Coast.
