Whatever your future, you will need English and maths.
English and maths are
everywhere, whether you are
sending a text, paying for the
bus or reading train timetables,
you are using English and
maths.
We will use your qualifications
on entry to place you on a
suitable course, tailored to your

So that you have the best
possible chance in life and in
your future career, our tutors
are committed to helping
you gain English and maths
qualifications.
When you join us you do

included these subjects already
on your timetable.
ESSENTIAL
SKILLS FOR
SUCCESS
What if I have
passed my GCSE
English and/or
maths?
If you have already
achieved your GCSE
English and/or maths, we
will help you to develop
these skills further. Our
tutors will point out to
you within sessions what
English and maths topics
you are practising.

develop your skills
further. Many interviews
may require you to sit an
English and/or maths test
so keeping on practising
these skills will help you
to succeed!
“Studying English and maths has helped me in the
workplace to read from scale drawings, convert
imperial units to metric and to communicate with
both colleagues and customers.”

Leigh College Full-Time Course Guide 2016/17
Understanding
your Qualification
BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma
BTEC Extended Diplomas are two year courses
made up of 18 units or subjects (core units and
specialist units) related to your chosen industry.
It is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and at the
end you should achieve a triple grade e.g. PPP,
MMM, DDD or D*D*D* which attract points for
university, just like A Levels.
A BTEC Extended Diploma at D*D*D* is the
equivalent to achieving 3 grade As at A Level.
Progression
Most students will go on to university after
studying a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma.
Others go straight into work. A BTEC Level 3
Extended Diploma will give you knowledge
and skills to enter your chosen industry.
BTEC Level 2 Diploma/
First Extended Certificate
These are one year courses made up of a
number of units or subjects, related to your
chosen industry. At the end you should
achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction.
Progression
Both of these courses provide a great
stepping stone onto the Level 3 Extended
Diploma and most students will go on to
study at this higher level. Another option is to
continue learning in the workplace gaining
employment based training.
BTEC Level 1 Diploma
The BTEC Level 1 Diploma is the first step on the BTEC ladder. It is a good introduction to learning
about the area of work you are interested in. It is a one year course made up of a number of units or
subjects, all related to your chosen industry. At the end of your course you should achieve a Pass.
Progression
Most students will carry on learning about their chosen industry by studying a BTEC Level 2 Diploma.
Another option is to continue learning in the workplace gaining employment based training such as
an apprenticeship.
