City of Toronto Releases Framework for Devastation
Recommendations such as creating one taxi license to hurt industry
The City of Toronto is currently in the process
of reviewing how taxi cabs are licensed. As
part of this process, City staff released a
Framework for the Review that included 44
recommended changes to the taxi licensing
structure in June 2013.
The Framework is being called the Framework
for Devastation of the Taxi industry by many.
It is meant to address issues heard through
the consultations and lays the foundation for
changes to the industry. It is designed to facilitate further discussion and engagement with
the industry and other stakeholders.

This is an important time for Toronto’s taxi
industry and it is important to be informed
and to participate in public discussions.
Some of the changes include making
Toronto’s taxi fleet 100 per cent wheelchair
accessible over the long term, transitioning the industry to
one type of license, and requiring new taxi cabs owners to
drive their own cars.
The City will be holding public consultations throughout the
summer until September. Dates released so far include:
 Tuesday July 9, 2013, 1 to 4 p.m., North York Civic
Centre, Council Chambers
 Wednesday July 10, 2013, 6 to 9 p.m., City Hall,
Council Chambers
 Monday July 15, 2013, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Scarborough
Civic Centre, Council Chambers
 Thursday July 18, 2013, 6 to 9 p.m. Scarborough Civic
Centre, Council Chambers
The final report is expected on October 29 2013.

Co-op donates vintage cabs to Canada-India film
‘Dr. CABBIE’
It’s a wrap! Filming has complete on ‘Dr. Cabbie,’ a comedy about an unemployed doctor who turns his taxi
into a medical clinic.
Co-op Cabs was asked to work with the
production team on the movie to
provide some vintage cabs that could
be used on set. Co-op has often worked
with film companies in the past who
are shooting in Toronto.

There are a number of well known actors in the cast including Vinay
Virmani, who starred in the 2011 hockey-themed comedy Breakaway,
Adrianne Palicki (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Chris Diamantopoulos (The Office,
The Three Stooges) and The Big Bang Theory’s Kunal Nayyar.
The film is directed by Quebec’s Jean-Francois Poulliot and is expected to
be released in 2013.
New Partnership to launch with MADD Toronto to
discourage drinking and driving
Co-op Cabs is the official 2013/14 cab partner of
MADD Toronto, a chapter of MADD Canada, which a
charitable, grassroots organization that is committed
to stopping impaired driving and supporting the
victims of this violent crime.
“We are delighted to be partnering with MADD
Toronto to bring increased awareness to a very
important issue in the GTA,” said Peter Zahakos,
General Manager, Co-op Cabs. “We are very much
looking forward to the months ahead to see how we
can encourage Torontonians to plan ahead and stay
safe.”
