District News
It is important that we continue to take H1N1 seriously and do what we can to stop its spread.
Both the H1N1 and seasonal flu can spread easily from person to
person. We want to assure you that the Health Department and the
schools are taking steps each and every day to reduce the spread of
the flu and provide a safe and healthy environment for your
child(ren) including monitoring absenteeism, supporting good
hygiene and making flu vaccine available to all school children in
Kane County .
We ask you to continue to do your part. To keep yourself and family from getting sick, you can
follow “The Three Cs”:
•
•
•
Clean your Hands: Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water
or hand sanitizer. You can set a good example by doing this yourself.
Cover your Cough: Teach your children to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues,
or by using an elbow, arm or sleeve when one isn’t handy. Teach them not to share
personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils.
Contain Illness: Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after they no longer
have fever or do not have signs of fever, without using fever-reducing drugs (Tylenol,
Advil, Motrin). Keeping children at home will help them get better faster, and at the
same time help stop the spread of the virus. Please do not send children to school if they
are sick.
Finally, we recommend that children get the flu vaccine. There will be two types of H1N1 flu
vaccine---nasal spray and traditional ‘shot’--- available through clinics at community locations
during the next few weeks. See the attached flyer for detailed information.
At this time there is a limited supply of vaccine, but we have been assured by the Centers for
Disease Control that the supply will increase over the coming weeks. As more vaccine becomes
available, the Health Department, our community hospitals, pharmacies and doctors offices will
be working together to make sure that everyone who wants a flu shot can get one. So, please
continue to look for more information and updates at www.kanehealth.com
If you have any questions regarding the H1N1 flu or the flu vaccine, be sure and talk to your
doctor or the Kane County Health Department. Again, more information about the flu, flu
vaccine and the community flu vaccine clinics is available now at www.kanehealth.com .

Shields recently enjoyed a Fire Safety Assembly with the Sugar Grove firemen as part of Fire
Prevention Week.
Students and parents alike also recently got
their “”boo on” at the Boo Bash event
sponsored by the John Shields PTO!
6
John Shields Students Focus on Literacy - Students in 3rd – 5th grades at Kaneland John
Shields are working on finding important facts in the text as part of the literacy curriculum.
They are learning how to take this information and turn it into new knowledge by using their
reading strategies.
Students work together in multiple settings (whole group, small group and independently) as
they master this skill.
Meanwhile, kindergarteners have been
learning the meaning of metacognition and
practice sharing their thinking while they
read in class.
7
Kaneland High School to Host Santa’s CraftShop on November 7 - The arts and crafts show
will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and will feature original artists and crafters
displaying their handmade products. Proceeds will benefit the Peer Leadership student
organization.
Peer Leadership is a group of students who help other
students feel connected to Kaneland High School. It is
an active group of students who are involved with many
different sports and activities throughout the high
school. Peer Leaders work on team building and
leadership skills while having fun! Some activities
include: Camp, Organizing the Mr. Kaneland Pageant
to raise money for The Delnor Center for Breast Health,
Freshman Orientation Day and Freshman Fridays.
For crafters wishing to receive information on the show, please contact Kadie O’Connor at
[email protected] for an application.
Educational Lingo
So often, educators are caught using phrases or acronyms that have little to no meaning to the
non-educator. Therefore, this section of the newsletter is used to define and describe
educational lingo.
Metacognition refers to learners' automatic awareness of their own knowledge and their ability to
understand, control, and manipulate their own cognitive processes.
Metacognitive skills are important not only in school, but throughout life. For example, an
effective manager is a person who has learned to learn. Someone who knows the stages in the
process of learning and understands his or her own preferred approaches to it - a person who can
identify and overcome blocks to learning and can bring learning from off-the-job learning to onthe-job situations.
