So pop into your local First Estate and pick a dozen at this hot price for the cellar or to enjoy today. A NOTE FROM THE TASTING PANEL ne of the most exciting things about wine is the promise that each new vintage is unique. Shaped by climate, soil and aspect, no two vintages can be exactly the same. Most of Australia’s grapes have been picked and are now in the winery being carefully fermented, nurtured and coaxed. But, because we won’t see these wines for months or even years in some cases, the panel has tried to put together a collection to drink while you wait: including some brilliant wines from South Australia and New Zealand, a fine selection of Chardonnay and some bountiful blends. O Jacob’s Creek Reserve Shiraz 2002 This is a standout wine from the fantastic 2002 vintage. The tasting panel was amazed by this intense, inky Shiraz. The palate is massively rich, fruity, full bodied with great structure and mouthfeel. The finish is long and gently tannic. A simply fantastic wine to drink now or keep for many years. 1199 1199 In any mixed dozen Jacob’s Creek Reserve Chardonnay 2003 This wine has been beautifully made, showing a complex creamy and slightly nutty palate from partial lees and MLF. There are tasty melon and citrus fruit characters. A great drink now or cellar for a few years. $ 1199 In any mixed dozen Jacob’s Creek Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 Rich, dark and concentrated with notes of blackberry, black olive and crushed herbs. With intensity to burn, this wine lasts and lasts on the palate. A sumptuous satisfying wine for red meats and cheeses. Offers in this edition are available until 6th June 2005 3 The Brilliance Of The Barossa he Barossa, north-east of Adelaide, is arguably Australia’s most famous wine producing region and encompasses the Barossa floor, Barossa ranges and the neighbouring Eden Valley. Originally settled in the 1840’s, the area now boasts over five hundred grape growers, some now in their sixth generation, supplying over 60,000 tonnes of grapes to more than 50 wineries. T Though the fame of the region was built on traditional names like Seppelt, Gramp and Lehmann, it is alive with exciting new brands like Torbreck and Pepperjack. In general the Barossa is warm and dry, perfectly suited to most varieties. But Shiraz, Cabernet and Grenache are the standouts in the lower warmer areas, while Riesling and Chardonnay are the star performers on the higher, cooler (300-500 metres) slopes of the Eden Valley and Barossa Ranges. $ S B O NnUu m Mag 999 In any mixed dozen St Hallett Poacher’s Blend 2004 A terrific value wine from a Barossa stalwart. Nearly all wines have some blended component, such as a mix of varieties, vineyards, vintages, early and late picked fruit, different barrels or vats or different winemaking techniques. B Blending gives consistency of style, enhanced quality, complexity and balance, and several other practical and sometimes legal applications. How do they get there? All quality sparkling wine is fermented twice; the final fermentation is in the bottle in which the wine will be sold. Good fizz starts as a still wine. In Champagne the allowed varietals are Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. It is blended from different components, chosen mainly for a high degree of acidity. This provides a base upon which the second fermentation can ‘build’ the wine’s complexity and character. The still wine is refermented in the bottle, producing carbon dioxide which is released when the cork is eventually popped, causing the bubbles. $ S U N O B 899 In any mixed dozen Seppelt Fleur De Lys Pinot Noir Chardonnay NV This wine wears its cool climate origin, brazenly on its sleeve. With tangy acidity, fine lemon and melon fruit flavours, it is a terrific aperitif style bound to quench the thirst. Look for an intricate palate that includes the strawberry, mushroomy nuances of Pinot Noir and the delicate citrus overtones of Chardonnay. This is added to by the bready, yeasty doughy hallmarks of the second fermentation, finishing with a soft, creamy persistent length of bubbles.
