Best ever GCSE results
Today saw our Year 11 pupils receiving their GCSE results
and what a set of results they were. Every school says
their results are the “best ever” but ours really were.
The most important measure of the percentage of pupils
who achieved five GCSEs at Grade C or above, including
English and Maths, increased by an impressive 10%. This
was the biggest increase in the area. The top four
performing pupils Sam Woodford, Ryan Witts, Adam
Trott and Kate Mainwaring, achieved a total of 55 A*/A
grades between them. Well done everyone- you’ve
made us all extremely proud.

Jack’s success continues
Past pupil and Head Boy, Jack Mainwaring, continues to
impress with his outstanding academic achievements.
Today he found out from Cross Keys College that he has
achieved 5 top A* grades in his A Levels in Maths,
Further Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Welsh. This is on
top of the A* he achieved at A Level in Music whilst still
at Pontllanfraith. Jack now joins the prestigious Churchill
College in Cambridge University to study Natural
Sciences. In addition, Jack, a flautist, has spent his first
summer touring with the National Youth Orchestra of
Wales and had such a good experience that he was
entitled the woodwind player with the most potential.
Well done Jack for all that you have achieved. You are
an inspiration!

Annual Sports Day a roaring success
The school held its annual Sports Day today. The
weather held up for us with a big pour down just when
the last event finished. The level of participation was at
its highest today with the whole school taking part. Well
done to all the winners- no school records smashed this
year but some came very close. . . !

Pupils enjoy a French breakfast
The Secondary Resource Base (SRB) finished an exciting
French Week with a French breakfast today. Pupils have
spent the week learning French words, building the Eiffel
Tower, cooking crepes and painting Monet replicas
among many other challenges. Sainsbury’s very kindly
supported the base once again with donations of
croissants and pain au chocolat which contributed to a
fantastic breakfast enjoyed by pupils and staff alike.
Thank you again Sainsbury’s.

Year 6 pupils enjoy their first full day in a
secondary school
Today was our Induction Day where all Year 6 pupils who
are transferring in to us for September spent their first
day as secondary school pupils. It was just like a normal
day with assembly, lessons and registration. Many new
friendships have already been struck and at the end of
the day, we had many little people very excited about
starting full time after the holidays. The evening saw
everyone return with their parents to meet senior
members of staff and to hear a presentation from three
Year 7 pupils, Jessica Murray, Louise Blakeney and Levi
Crook, about their first year. There were some very tired
pupils at the end of an extremely good day!

Mark Lewis Jones joins our assembly
Pupils and staff were honoured recently when actor
Mark Lewis Jones (of Stella and Belonging fame)
attended our assembly to tell us about his recent
Marathon Des Sables ordeal. This is the subject of a
three part S4C documentary and is regarded as the
toughest foot race on earth. The talk centred around
the Supporting Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research
Project that he is raising money for. We were all
extremely proud to present him with a cheque for £1500
which were proceeds from a recent sponsored run
undertaken by pupils in Years 7 to 9. The photograph
shows Mark with pupils in the school hall and Year 9
pupil Kerean Watts presenting him with our cheque.

Rotary Young Technologist winners (again!)
Pontllanfraith Comprehensive school was named overall
winner of the 2014 Pontllanfraith and Blackwood Rotary
Club Young Technologists’ Competition. As usual, there
was a high quality of entries from three schools Oakdale Comprehensive, Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni and
Pontllanfraith. The winners were: Ist Millie Davidgend
Smith (Pontllanfraith), 2 James Powell (Pontllanfraith),
3rd Oakdale Comprehensive. In addition, there was an
excellent standard of entries from Cerys Gittins and
Hannah Rees from Pontllanfraith. Both received
commendations for their designs and build quality. Not
only were the winners’ designs of a really high standard,
but the quality of their individual presentations was also
superb. Yet again, our pupils have done us proud!
The Year 10 football squad has had a tremendous year
and has reached two major finals. Although missing out
on winning the games, all players deserve much praise
for their hard work and resilience during the season. A
great squad effort. Their attitude, game management
and support for each other is always commented on by
staff and match officials. Well done boys and well done
to the victorious teams.

Off timetable “Opportunity Day” enjoyed by all
All pupils in years 7 to 10 enjoyed a range of activities
outside of the normal classroom environment today.
Year 7 had a wellbeing and environment morning
walking around Cwmcarn Forest Drive with their
teachers. Year 8 and 9 pupils benefited from a full
morning of workshops including the Red Cross on first
aid, Tenovus on the dangers of sun damage, ASH on the
dangers of smoking and the Police talking about the
dangers of drugs and alcohol. Year 10 pupils and
teachers travelled to Big Pit in the Rhondda as part of
their Welsh Baccalaureate programme. Pupils from
years 7 to 9 then finished a day with a sponsored run,
with staff, raising money for Leukaemia and Lymphoma
Research. What a rewarding and valuable school day for
all!

Friday 16th May was Business in the Community's 'Give
and Gain Day'. Twenty two volunteers from the
Intellectual Property Office (IPO) in Newport spent the
day in the school’s Resource Base. They painted and
totally transformed two classrooms, painted and
equipped the quiet room, and also stained all the
wooden furniture and decking in the garden area. Thank
you to everyone from the IPO for giving up their time.
Our old friends in Sainsbury’s Pontllanfraith once again
provided much needed financial support. We are
overwhelmed once again by the community’s support.
An amazing day!
As part of the Welsh Baccalaureate community
participation component, Year 10 pupils have recently
taken part in the British Telecom Digital Leaders’
initiative. Each pupil who took part volunteered to
spend at least one hour with someone in their local
community helping them to get online, for example
using the internet, email, Google or YouTube. The school
was delighted to discover today that we are one of the
top three contributors in the UK and have won five stateof-the-art PCs along with tickets for the whole year
group to attend a rock concert in London! Well done to
everyone involved and thank you to Ms Rowlands for
organising it all.

19 May 2014
Year 7 pupils run shoulders with the First
Minister
We are extremely proud to announce that Tyler Hook
from Year 8 competed in the British Acrobatic
Gymnastics finals on Sunday 01 June 2014. With her
partner, Natasha Minchella, 25, both competed in the
‘Out Of Age’ Women’s pair’s category. Having secured a
place in the finals, the partnership went on to win Gold
by four clear points. We are very proud to have a British
champion in our midst. Also competing at the British
NPD Acrobatic Gymnastics Finals was another pupil of
the school, Olivia Hillman, aged 12, who secured
seventh position overall in her very challenging category.
This was Olivia’s best performance to date. All girls train
at Pen-Y Bont Gymnastics club in Bridgend and we are
proud to acknowledge what is obviously an outstanding
achievement.
Sixteen year 7 pupils were chosen to visit the Royal
Navy's latest warship - HMS Dragon which docked in
Cardiff Bay on 15th May. Only four schools were selected
to have this great opportunity. It was a prestigious event
with the First Minister Carwyn Jones also on board for a
tour of the ship. Pupils had a full guided tour of the
warship visiting the: control room, landing pads, sleeping
quarters, fire safey and rescue crew, engineering and
sick bay. A great and memorable experience for all
pupils.

Positive results keep rolling in. . . .

Year 7 birdbox project
Thirty Year 7 pupils were recently involved in a project
making bird boxes for two full days with Richard Evans
from Projectnestbox. The pupils learnt about native bird
species and found out some of the things that could be
done to help endangered species. Pupils then worked in
groups to construct bird boxes, including two owl sized,
for the school grounds. It was a challenging but
rewarding activity where pupils had to work as a team,
follow a plan and meet a deadline. Richard made a
return visit when several of our Year 11 pupils helped
him to erect the bird boxes in suitable locations in the
school grounds.
Although lessons continue this year for Year 11 pupils
right up until they sit their examinations, today saw the
end of normal school life for our excellent young people.
The day culminated in the annual Records of
Achievement ceremony which took place in front of a
packed school hall full of proud family members. You’ve
been a pleasure to work with Year 11 so make sure you
give it your all now in the run up to the actual exams. It
WILL be worth it. See you all in the prom. . . . .

6 May 2014
Twelve medals for Pontllanfraith pupils
Ewan Franklin and Kyron Jones were selected by the
Boys Club of Wales recently and played on the 4th May
against the Boys’ Club of Scotland. It was played in Port
Talbot and the Wales team won 3-1 with Kyron scoring
one of the goals in the match. They play Ireland next
(away) on the 24th May. Well done to both boys!
This Gwent Cup Semi-final fixture between the two local
schools has always been highly competitive. Wednesday
the 7th May was no different. With a prestigious place in
the Gwent Final at stake, both sides started the game
with a high tempo. As always a very evenly matched
game and even with Kyron Jones missing by inches, the
first half ended goaless. To their credit Blackwood raised
their game in the second half but great defending and
goalkeeping by Taylor Morgan kept the ball out of the
net. With five minutes to go and after recovering from
'taking the spectator fence out', captain Liam Angel ran
inside on the right of the pitch to score the winning goal.
Pontllanfraith won this cup way back in 2002 for the first
time. This squad has every chance of winning the cup
back. Da iawn bechgyn! A great squad performance.
The year 10 squad are also playing in the Caerphilly
League final against Lewis School at the new
Performance Centre in Ystard Mynach on the 23rd May.
Two finals in one season is exceptional.
Twelve pupils represented the Secondary Special
Resource Base in an athletics competition at Leckwith
Stadium in Cardiff on 1st May. They competed against
pupils from a number of other special schools and
resource bases from across South Wales. It was a very
successful day with pupils returning to school with
twelve gold, silver and bronze medals. Well done
everyone- you’ve done Pontllanfraith proud. . . .

Caerphilly’s Mayor pays us a visit
Pontllanfraith was delighted to be visited today by
Councillor and Mrs Gray, Caerphilly’s Mayor and Lady
Mayoress. Councillor Gray, who is the county councillor

been an extremely busy year of ceremonies and official
functions.

Musical Kate scores top marks in top grade
Kate Mainwaring, our present Head Girl, recently
discovered that she scored a very impressive distinction
pass at Grade 8 on the clarinet. This is the top mark in
the top grade. This year is proving to be an excellent
year for Kate’s results- before the GCSE season starts
officially, she has already banked three full A* grades in
Maths and an A* in English Language. Well done Kateyou’re on a roll!

It’s downhill for Pont pupils in Austria
Pupils from all year groups enjoyed a fantastic skiing trip
in Austria over the Easter holiday. The visit, which was
arranged by the PE department, saw Mrs Reed, who led
the trip and has run many such visits in the past, stated
that these pupils were the most able skiers she had ever
had the pleasure of working with. Well done everyone
on your commitment to the sport and perfect behaviour.

Annual Eisteddfod’s a roaring success
Lucky pupils from Years 8 to 11 spent a part of the Easter
break touring the South of Italy with the Geography
Department. Cities visited included Sorrento and Rome
and pupils, who were accompanied by Mrs Watkins, Mrs
Dutt, Mr Blunt and Mr Price, all confirmed that it was
“the best school visit we’ve ever been on”. This view
was shared by the staff who were extremely
complimentary about pupils’ behaviour and fascination
with the environment they were visiting. Where are you
off to next Geography???
Pontllanfraith’s annual Eisteddfod for pupils in Years 7 to
9 took place today. Once again, the main school hall was
transformed into a grand pavilion for the pupils’
performances which ranged from drama, dance, singing
recitation to instrumental solos. These were in addition
to all the competition work that has gone on throughout
the departments over the last term. As always, the
standard was outstanding and all pupils thoroughly
enjoyed the event. Gruffydd House were once again
declared the overall winners. Da iawn pawb a diolch i

Dance Showcase goes down a storm. . .
This year’s Dance Showcase took place in a packed to
capacity school hall tonight. Over the last few months, a
number of our senior pupils have travelled to our
partner primary schools to act as dance leaders.
Working with primary aged pupils, they’ve all worked
hard to prepare their set dances which were performed
tonight. Well over 100 pupils aged from 9 to 16
performed in front of a very appreciative audience. Well
done to everyone involved- the hard work has certainly
been worth it!

Investors in Families
The school was delighted to have been awarded full
Investors in Families’ accreditation today following a
rigorous external assessment.
A number of key
stakeholders including parents, local headteachers,
social workers, Governors and pupils all contributed to
the assessment. It’s good to know that our hard work to
ensure our pupils’ wellbeing at all times is recognised.
Thank you to everyone who contributed, especially Mrs
Crooker who coordinated the whole process.

Cambridge University comes to Pontllanfraith
We were proud to invite Dr Jonathan Padley, a
Cambridge University Widening Participation Officer, to
our school recently. He provided information for a small
number of Year 11 students from Pontllanfraith, and
other local schools, on what Oxbridge has to offer and
what prospective applicants need to think about in order
to access it. He provided us with a very colourful and
informative account of what it’s like to attend one of the
UK’s top universities. Aim high everyone!!

Year 10 pupils enjoyed their work experience week
before the half term break and the reports received from
our partner placements, which included schools,
garages, supermarkets, vets, hairdressers, BT and a dog

the pupils’ behaviour was and how they really embraced
the opportunities they were offered. Pupils to be proud
of!

Y11 are officially “first aiders”
A significant number of Year 11 pupils gained their St
John’s Ambulance First Aider certificate recently as part
of their BTEC Sport qualification. The standard was
extremely high and the pupils gained extremely useful
skills which they can use on or off the sports field. Well
done everyone!
Two teams of debaters travelled to Ysgol Gyfun Cwm
Rhymni tonight to compete in the first round of the
annual Rotary competition. A well-researched
performance from the Intermediate team on
stereotyping set the tone for the night with Kiera
O’Hennessy, Kayleigh Chaplin and Kerean Watts making
up the team. This was followed by the senior team of
seasoned professionals made up of Adam Trott, Sam
Woodford and Ryan Witts. Their presentation on the
young generation was outstanding and impressed
everyone in the room with their excellent blend of
professionalism, insight and wit. All present were
delighted to hear that both teams won their
competitions and now proceed to the next round. Well
done everyone including Mrs Lewellyn and Mr Seymour
for their hard work in the coaching!
Pupils from all year groups participated enthusiastically
in an ‘Off-Timetable Day’ which gave them the
opportunity to engage in a wide range of stimulating
whole year group learningactivities. These included
team building and problem solving sessions, sustainable
development and global citizenship workshops,
technology activities and even an Italian ‘taster’ day.
Pupils developed a range of new skills and knowledge
which will serve them well for the future.
Pupils and staff were privileged yesterday to experience
a rare visit from HM Royal Marines School of Music.
Their performance was outstanding and had everyone
on their feet. This was followed by an interactive
rehearsal which pupils thoroughly enjoyed. Our guests
also made an inspiring career presentation which
described the training and travel opportunities that are
available to new recruits. A superb experience. Thank
you to Ms Rowlands, our Head of Music, for organising it

Kiddo’s Choice
20 December 2013
Merry Christmas
Year 7 pupil Tyler Coopey competed this weekend in the
Cardiff Cross Challenge, one of the country’s most
prestigious and challenging cross country events. He
competed with some of the best athletes from around
the county on a course is marked to national standards
and incorporates a mixture of flat fast running and
interesting woodland and riverside sections. The Cardiff
Cross Challenge takes place in the centre of Cardiff
within the beautiful Castle grounds of Bute Park that
lead into Blackweir Fields. Supported by PE staff Mr
Davies and Mrs Rees, Tyler ran very well and did himself
proud. Full results yet to be announced.
Year 7 took part in the annual Kiddo’s Choice event
today organised by Gwent Police. This is an excellent
multi-agency event that helps to highlight how antisocial behaviour affects the community and the
consequences of getting involved in that behaviour.
Presentations from the Police, the Magistrates Service,
Victim Support and the Youth Offending Team helped to
reinforce the importance of being good citizens. An
enjoyable but very informative morning for all. Thank
you to the school’s Police Liaison Officer PC Corrina
Davies for organising the event.
Mr Williams and his staff wish everyone a very merry
Christmas. We hope you all have an enjoyable and,
above all, safe two week break. See you in 2014.

Visits to Winter Wonderland
The annual pilgrimage to Winter Wonderland in Cardiff
took place over the last two days for the hundreds of
pupils in Years 7 to 10 who had made excellent academic
progress and had maintained exemplary behaviour
records over the year. A great time was had by all on the
rides and on the skating rink. Hard work has its rewards!

SSRB concert stuns the audience
The annual concert staged by the Secondary Special
resource Base (SSRB) took place today in the main school
hall. This is always a magical event but regular visitors
agreed that this year’s show, based on the ‘Gold to
Bethlehem’ musical, was the best ever with all pupils and
members of staff performing on stage for the capacity
audience. There were too many solo performances to
be able to single any individual out but every one sang
their heart out and provided performances that moved
the audience. What a talented bunch you are.
Congratulations to Mrs Watts and her staff for what can
only be described as an “amazing” production. Special

Sponsored circuit event- £1900 raised in one
hour by Year 7
All year 7 took part in a Sponsored Circuit challenge in
our leisure centre on the 26th November. The event was
to raise funds for the PE department and also for Bobath
Wales. This is a registered charity which supports
children with cerebral palsy.
All pupils had a target to raise £10 to complete the 15
station circuit. Stations in the circuit involved punch
bags, basketball shooting, hockey skills, hurdles and
agility ladders as well as some of the standard muscular
endurance exercises. All pupils were organised in the
Sports Hall with form tutors and many other staff
lending support. The atmosphere was tremendous and
all pupils worked extremely hard in the challenge.
Funds raised by the pupils were close to £2000. This
reflects the huge level of motivation and willingness of
the pupils to contribute to such an event. On a special
assembly on Friday 29th November all pupils were
congratulated on their efforts and two gift vouchers
were awarded to the top boy/ girl fundraiser. Matthew
Jones raised £131 and Jessica Daniels raised a record
breaking £160. Exceptional achievement by both pupils.
A cheque will be forwarded to Bobath Wales before
Christmas. Funds raised will also contribute towards PE
activities and new Gower Camp equipment. This is an
adventurous residential trip based in Port Einon run by
the PE Department in July and is open to allyear 7 & 8
pupils.
Special thanks go to the pupils, parents and members of
our community who have supported this event. I would

Sports Day one of the best
Today was our Induction Day where all Year 6 pupils who
are transferring in to us for September spent their first
day as secondary school pupils. It was just like a normal

friendships have already been struck and at the end of
the day, we had many little people very excited about
starting full time after the holidays. Words such as
awesome and amazing were heard all around the place.
The evening saw everyone return with their parents to
meet senior members of staff and to hear a presentation
from three Year 7 pupils about their first year. There
were some very tired pupils at the end of an extremely
good day!
Maes Manor was the venue this year for the much
anticipated Year 11 Prom. Following a very busy
examination season, Year 11 pupils and members of staff
celebrated the end of their compulsory education days
and danced the night away. What a fantastic event it
was with splendid weather and a real film premier feel.
