Happenings at The Arc
PALS (Personal & Leisure Services)
Diane Baer is a long-time
fan of PALS (Personal &
Leisure Services), The Arc’s
recreation program. She
loves going out, making
new friends and having
new experiences. In fact,
Diane recently returned
from a ten-day vacation
that included New York,
Boston, Maine, and
Canada!
Upbeat and cheerful, Diane takes full advantage of all the programs
PALS offers – dances, movies, nature walks with Leisure Express
Local, Hawaii, Alaska, San Francisco, Las Vegas, New Orleans with
Leisure Express Trip & Travel, and for more than 30 years, an amazing
week of summer camp with Camp-A -Lot. Her social calendar is fun,
creative and very satisfying – it includes at least two local outings a
month, summer camp, and one big travel trip!
Leisure Express
Trip & Travel
Want to travel and see new
places? Our 2010 calendar
includes a road trip up
California’s Highway 101 to San
Francisco, the ultimate baseball
experience, spring training,
old-fashioned country western
hospitality at a Dude Ranch,
and, in September, the “magical
journey” to Walt Disney World,
Florida and the fantasy of the
Magic Kingdom!
Parent/Infant
Twice a week, and soon to be more,
consumers from North Shores and
Sulpizio Center’s Community based
program volunteer a couple hours at
the Ronald McDonald House washing
and drying linen in the laundry room
so children and their families will be
comfortable as they receive pediatric
cancer treatment at this wonderful
medical facility.
We now offer families the option
of scheduling educational or play
programs for their children on the
weekends. The Saturday Play Pals
Program is held in family friendly
community parks around San Diego
County. Children are guided through
fun activities such as parachute
play, movement to music, throwing
beanbags in hoops, and games that
develop skills. Siblings and children
from the community with parents
are welcome to join us. Spring events
include a nature walk at Mission Trails
Park, Ocean Beach Kite Festival, and a
trip to the Carlsbad Flower Fields. For
more information call Diane Lowrie at
(619) 564-2308.
Assets In Action!
The Computer Lab, jointly
staffed by North Shores and
the San Diego Community
College, is an illustration of the
enduring partnership shared by
the two organizations. Here,
consumers have access to a full
range of adaptive software and
hardware, receiving instruction
that is individualized and based
upon skill and ability level. On
any given day you will find
consumers using the computer
to prepare a resume, “play”
Solitaire, a task teaching use
of the mouse, or using their
chin to push a switch. We are
committed to this collaboration
and look forward to jointly
creating and improving computer
labs throughout the agency.

Respite
Caring for a child, teen, or adult with a developmental disability can
be stressful for many parents. Respite care helps alleviate this.
In-home respite offers families short-term relief from continual care
of a family member with a disability. Families use this time to shop,
run errands, schedule appointments, spend quality time with other
members, or have private time alone.
Overnight respite is available every weekend, Friday through Sunday
at The Arc’s Respite House in El Cajon. We provide a safe and
stimulating environment with recreational and fun activities that
encourage social interaction and independence. For information call
Claire Stratton at (619) 685-1175 or email [email protected].
❝
Respite House has been a godsend! We believe an overnight
getaway helps Alex toward the transition of entering a group
home. The entire staff at Respite House has surpassed our
expectations. They are dedicated, caring and put a high regard on
indoor and outdoor activities. I have been with The Arc for more
than 20 years and have seen a lot of different programs. I sincerely
believe that Respite House stands out from among all of them.

Naming Opportunities
We Met The Kresge Challenge!
Building Toward Self-Sufficiency capital campaign is an exciting
project. We hope we can count on you to help. Below is a list of
named-gift opportunities.
Thanks to your generous donations, The Arc of San Diego will
receive a $350,000 challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation of
Troy, Michigan.
$25,000 each
Sensory Room. Quiet, safe, and respectful place of retreat
where individuals can explore and develop their senses and skills.
Equipped with different features such as light, sound, fragrance and
specialized equipment, the room is extremely therapeutic.
Because of YOUR response, hard work and persistent efforts over
the past seven months, we met The Kresge Challenge issued in
June 2009. More than 150 donors and volunteers responded to the
challenge and we successfully raised an astonishing $976,580 in
gifts and pledges towards modernization and construction of the
new 16,000-square-foot Sulpizio Family Arc Center. We are deeply
grateful to all of you who helped us meet this challenge.
Art Studio & Gallery. Encourages artistic expression and
provides space to create, exhibit, and market art.
The Building Toward Self-Sufficiency capital campaign total stands
at $2,956,841. The goal is $3.8 million.
Multi-Media Room. Offers music classes, educational
programming and entertainment that promotes socialization and
learning.
The Sulpizio Family Arc Center was built because the original
building no longer met our community’s needs for the future. The
aging facility was inadequate, too costly to maintain, and not in
compliance with the American Disabilities Act (ADA).

The Day Program at Sulpizio Family Arc Center helps more than 100
adults with disabilities function as independently as possible. The
new building features eight-themed classrooms including Computer
Lab, Sensory Room, Fitness Recreation Room, Multi-Media Room,
Therapeutic Spa Room, Animal & Nature Room, Arts & Crafts
Room, and Art Studio & Gallery. The Center also serves as the hub
for The Arc’s countywide operations and contributes significantly to
the revitalization in the neighborhood.

$1,000
$250-$500
Pledges for naming opportunities can be paid at one time or over a
three-year period. Deadline for all tile purchases is April 30, 2010.
Your employer’s matching gift counts towards your naming
opportunity.

and supporters see that we still need help going forward. There
are many different ways for you to help - an outright pledge, cash,

Conclusions
Reviewing results of the Outcomes Measurement survey show:
■
■
■
■
The Outcomes Measurement survey identified an area for
improvement – consumer wages in Work Activity Programs. One
hundred percent of consumers in Supported Employment earn
more than 20% of minimum wage compared to 24% in Work
Activity. To address this, The Arc hired a Business Developer
to increase the amount, variety, and consistency of work. This
allows consumers in Work Activity Programs the opportunity
to learn tasks by doing it frequently, thereby improving their
earning potential.
Overall satisfaction with Arc’s services was high. Ninety-five
percent of consumers were overwhelmingly satisfied with services
and supports which resulted in a significant improvement in the
quality of their lives.
Ninety-two percent of funders and referral agencies, when asked
how Arc services compared to similar agencies, felt The Arc was
equal or better, 6% felt our programs were not as good, and 2%
did not answer the question.
The Arc of San Diego is firmly committed to helping consumers
choose the type of services that allows them the greatest level of
opportunity and freedom. Outcomes Measurement assures that
we provide services consumers want and need.
Jobs were found for 28 consumers within 90 days of request for
employment despite the downturn in the economy.
Staff, with improved training, helped consumers achieve 81% of
their goals.

Millie Oveross learned about The Arc through a friend
who suggested she apply for a job. Knowing that first
impressions are critical, Millie wore heels and a very nice
dress to the interview. She was asked to start that day –
and did – all dressed-up for work in a production center!
The next morning it was proper attire; jeans and tennies!
Having no experience working with people with
developmental disabilities, Millie was unsure she could
complete the week. Well, 25 years later, she is fulfilled
working at The Arc. Among the highlights of her quarter-

Our thanks go to Hydrodynamics Associated,
Kleen Blast, and Paramount Scaffold for laying the
groundwork in preparation for the revitalization project
done at North Shores last fall by Rebuilding Together,
San Diego (RTSD) and Cricket Communications, Inc.
Hydrodynamics Associated, working with business
partners Kleen Blast and Paramount Scaffold,
coordinated and donated sandblasting and painting
services for the metal roof. They sandblasted the roof
to roughen its surface so a new coat of paint would
adhere. Hydrodynamics applied several coats of paint
to the roof to provide flexibility, corrosion resistance,
and long-lasting finish.
The companies’ valuable contribution is important to
The Arc and truly appreciated.

Insurance Services brought holiday cheer to the 12 residents of
Pryor and Potter Group Homes when they adopted these homes
after learning that none of the residents were going home for
Christmas. Residents received gifts and enjoyed a lovely Christmas
dinner thanks to Jim and his company. L-R: Jonathan Reynolds,

For the past 17 years, the Arc San Diego Foundation
has come together annually for a day of golf. A rainy
morning on December 11, 2009 did not prevent more
than 100 golfers from hitting the links at the Carlton
Oaks Golf Course. The tournament raised close to
$60,000 with proceeds providing holiday cheer and
gifts for Arc consumers.
The Holiday Golf Tournament began in 1992 after
Arc San Diego Foundation board member Jon Kurtin
learned many consumers in Arc programs did not
receive holiday presents. Jon got together with several
of his friends to play golf and raise funds to fulfill
holiday wishes of these consumers. Since its founding,
the tournament has raised in excess of $750,000.
Special thanks to the Kurtin family, Lenny Ignelzi,
and Jim Sullivan whose dedication, enthusiasm, and
leadership were invaluable in, once again, organizing a
successful golf tournament.
