He said that the office was considering changing the amendments to the act on Slovenians abroad proposed by the previous government, because it found that some instances of wording were inappropriate. Šterka pogrešajo v Avstraliji Po nepreverjenih in nepotrjenih podatkih naj bi razbitine plovila vrglo na vzhodno obalo Avstralije F. S./Ma.B./STA, 29.01.2009 MZZ: Avstralske oblasti nadaljujejo iskanje Šterka Jure Šterk foto: Dokumentacija Dela Žekš said that the act on Slovenians abroad from 2006 was the first Slovenia adopted and was therefore unclear in several definitions and responsibilities. The office would also like to make several contents changes. Touching on Slovenia's 2008 strategy on relations with Slovenians abroad, Žekš said that it presented a move from shuffling papers to action. When asked about the solution for Italy's cutting of funds for the Slovenian minority, Žekš said that Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi guaranteed the Slovenian PM Borut Pahor that the problem would be solved. If not, Slovenia will take action, said Žekš. He said that Slovenia's biggest problem was that its neighbours did not respect international agreements or even court decisions, as was the case with Austria's bilingual signs. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2006 Census of Population and Housing the number stands at 16,093 people. The question that follows then is this an accurate number? The answer depends on who you talk to. Some say yes this is about right while others will say it is closer to 25,000 or even 30,000 people. Another interesting result from the 2006 Census is that 6,221 people said they were born in Slovenia. Again is this an accurate result? Perhaps a clue rests in the significant number of people who did not record their ancestry or place of birth in the 2006 Census. The table below shows that 1,645,643 people did not adequately/not state their ancestry and 1,376,791 people did not adequately/not state their country of birth. A considered point is to urge people to register their Slovenian ancestry and place of birth in the next Australian Census which will be in 2011. These States are followed by Western Australia (812), Australian Capital Territory (517), Tasmania (207) and Northern Territory (62). (refer to table below). Slovenians tend to live in capital cities, in relative percentage terms, rather than in regional areas although Victoria and News South Wales have a number of Slovenians, in absolute terms, living in regional areas such as Geelong, Albury/Wodonga, Wollongong and Newcastle. In Queensland Slovenians live in that State’s capital of Brisbane but also in other areas such as the Gold Coast. Tasmania has a significant percentage living outside that State’s capital of Hobart, although the absolute numbers are quite small. Of the 16,093 persons of Slovenian heritage, 7,929 (49.3%) are male and 8,156 (50.7%) are female. The percentage splits closely match that of the Australian population at large, with 49.4% males and 50.6% females. The total population of Australia at the 2006 Census was 19,855,287 people. Slovenian Adventure Sailor Missing 02.02.2009 By STA Adventure sailor Jure Šterk, who was on a voyage around the world, is reported missing. His sailboat, Lunatic, has been spotted some 1,000 nautical miles off the Australian coast with a broken mast, and there was no sign of Šterk on board. Amateur radio operators have been unable to contact Šterk since 17 January. Šterk, aged 72, started his voyage in Tauranga, New Zealand, on 25 October 2007. This was his second trip around the world. Britt Lapthorne's parents believe their daughter was murdered and have accused Dubrovnik police of frustrating the investigation and tampering with security footage that might hold clues about her death. Meanwhile, other female travellers have told how they escaped abduction attempts after partying at the same Dubrovnik nightclub from which Britt disappeared. The women compiled forensic sketches of their alleged attackers, and Dubrovnik police have confirmed they are serving police officers. But they said the men were "very good quality" officers who did not harass or rob foreign tourists. Photo: Supplied The mother of a Slovenian woman found dead in Croatia believes the case is linked to that of Australian traveller Britt Lapthorne. And like the Lapthorne case, those close to 35-year-old Irena Mlakar accuse police of failing to properly investigate her death, and suspect police may have had something to do with it. Irena's body was found in August 2007 on Krk Island, a tourist spot about 570km north of Dubrovnik, where Britt's body was found in October last year, three weeks after she disappeared. Irena's mother Stasa Mlakar has told the Slovenian newspaper Delo: "It seems that the death of my daughter and the Australian Britt Lapthorne, who died in Croatia last year, are linked". "There are many similarities because both were found three weeks after disappearing, both were identified via DNA, and the autopsy did not reveal the cause of their death." Friends, who were on holiday with Irena when she disappeared and began their own hunt for the missing woman, told Delo they believed police were watching them. Officers wanted to stop them from finding out anything about the disappearance, one unnamed friend told Delo. M. Zakaj bo milijon Avstralcev lizalo Nicole Kidman? Vsak igralec bo imel dve znamki Ka. Frank Gorshin Frank Gorshin as Bele Heath Ledger as The Joker We all know of the late Heath Ledger’s memorable role as The Joker in the latest Batman movie the Dark Knight, for which he won a posthumous Oscar for best supporting actor. You may be interested to know that Frank Gorshin, born to Slovenian parents, played The Riddler in the Batman television series which ran between 1966 and 1968. He was nominated for an Emmy for his role and was ther only member of the Batman cast to be nominated. His signature challenge line in the TV series "Riddle me this, Batman!" became a catch-phrase at that time. Frank Gorshin as The Riddler He also had a memorable role in the 1969 Star Trek episode "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" as the half-whiteface, half-blackface Bele, for which he was again Emmy-nominated. Prior to that, he was a dramatic actor, often playing "tough guys" like those played by one of his favorite target of impressions, James Cagney, whom he was said to resemble. Gorshin also played a villain in the television series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. He made several appearances on CBS's Ed Sullivan Show during the 1960s, including the February 9, 1964 broadcast in which The Beatles made their American debut. Frank appeared in over 70 movies and made over 40 guest appearances in TV series. Considered one of the top impressionists in Hollywood he did about 50 impressions. Born on April 5, 1934 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to parents Frank and Frances Gorshin, Frank was the oldest of three children. His father was a railroad worker and his mother a seamstress. "This is a first for me. I've never extended a tour before. I'm excited to be going back on the road, visiting places I've never been and returning to places I love," Madonna said. This is also the first time the "Queen of Pop" will perform in Slovenia. The tour is part of the promotion of Madonna's multi-Grammy-nominated album "Hard Candy", which has topped the music charts in more than 37 countries. The "Sticky & Sweet Tour" was seen by 2,350,285 fans in 58 cities in 2008 with record breaking ticket sales everywhere. 'Recesiji vstop strogo prepovedan!' Do pokopa pusta še rajanja D. J., F. M, B. Š., D. U., I. G., ned, 22.02.2009 Cerknica - Slovenijo so v soboto in nedeljo preplavile maškare: od tradicionalnih do prilagojenih aktualnemu dogajanju, zlasti političnemu, in druge. Vrstili so se veliki karnevali (Cerknica, Ptuj ...) in manjša pustovanja. V Cerknici oziroma Butalah so aretirali in vtaknili v ječo recesijo, ki foto: Ljubo Vukelič/Delo 8 Pust v Cerknici foto: Ljubo Vukelič/Delo KNJIGE – BOOKS KLIC K BOGU pesmi Ivan Burnik Legiša Adelaide, South Australia, 2008 Bog Oče! Internet http://www.paprikabalkanicus.com/ Slovenia is continuing to strive to get Italy to return the works of art and other documents that it confiscated in Slovenia before and during World War II, Foreign Ministry State Secretary Dragoljuba Benčina told the parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee. Anton Anderlič of the coalition Liberal Democrat (LDS) was bothered above all by the announcement that Italy will back an exhibition of the artworks in question in Slovenia. Benčina assured him that Slovenia had not changed its position on the matter and that it continued to work for a permanent return of the artworks taken from Slovenia. While welcoming the exhibition nonetheless, she explained that a commission was being revived that would be tasked with also examining the return of other documents, archives, and land registry files. The works of art in question, taken by Italy from Slovenia's Istria just prior to and at the outset of WWII, have already been put on display at the Trieste museum Revoltella in 2005 - given that they are "known", Slovenia should insist upon them being returned, Anderlič stressed. BUSINESS SLOVENIA Global financial crisis. Orders in industry continue to shrink and some Slovenian companies have already announced further layoffs. Increasingly more companies also opt for a shorter working week in order to avoid this. Companies deciding to temporarily cut the working week are entitled to state subsidies. The government allocated EUR 230m for implementing this measure and employers can receive the subsidies for up to six months. *** Slovenia Will Not Be Spared From Crisis, MPs Say in Brussels Brussels, 17 February The economic crisis is deeper than it seems and Slovenia will not be spared, members of a Slovenian delegation agreed in Brussels on Tuesday at a twoday meeting of members of the European Parliament and national parliaments. Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, whose country currently presides over the EU, described the situation by saying that "we are all in the same boat", which some are comparing to the Titanic. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said that the situation was clear: "We will either float together or sink together." "The crisis is reaching Slovenia with a slight delay," National Council president Blaž Kavčič pointed out, adding that the data showing a significant decrease in industrial activity were worrying and proved that Slovenia will not be spared from the crisis. Coalition Liberal Democrats (LDS) deputy Ljubo Germič highlighted that the country would have to face the real facts and that the crisis is deeper than it looks. He called for additional measures and welcomed the existing initiatives such as state subsidies for companies that are switching to a shorter working week. Silva Crnugelj of the Social Democrats (SD) pointed to the social dimension of the crisis. "We all fear a repeat of the situation from 1991 and 1992 when the number of unemployed topped 100,000, which is a lot for a country with 700,000 persons in employment." *** Find Slovenian professional and business connections on the internet at LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/ LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Urednik MEMO TO: South Australian Multicultural Leaders FROM: Senator Cory Bernardi DATE: 5 January 2009 SUBJECT: Multiculturalism in South Australia When my father migrated to Australia from Italy in 1958, he became one of the more than 200 nationalities that make Australia the country that it is today.
