Announcing Member Call-In Times
Have you ever thought – if I could just talk to a real person! Communication is all about listening and connection. I remember the fun of using two cans and a string
line for a telephone. I’m not sure we ever heard words,
but we were sure connected. Our new Member Call-In times will insure that you are
connected and your thoughts heard.
Here’s how it will work:
Contact our secretary, Sue Liemohn, to let her know that you want to be included in
the next Member Call-In conference call. She’ll give you a time for you to call in depending on the order of your request. She’ll also provide you with the conference line
number and access code. Your call in will connect you to the President and the Secretary.
Your ideas, suggestions and comments will be listened to, clarified if needed to insure
accuracy, and carefully recorded. They will then be taken to the entire board for discussion. Answers to questions will be published on the AWSC website or in the Review.
Organizations depend on members for a flow of ideas and suggestions to thrive and
grow. We want to hear from you.
First Member Call-In
November 18th starting at 8:00 pm ET.
To get your name on the call in list contact Sue at [email protected] (preferred)
or 763-753-3087.

THE REVIEW

President’s Message
from Jean Wright
It is both an honor and a privilege to serve as your president for the next two
years, and I am most grateful to Linda Ford for her efforts in facilitating a smooth
exchange of leadership.
Thank you to Sharilee and Tim Malik, Deb and Frank Parker for their work as site
coordinators for this year’s national. We all appreciate your considerable efforts in
arranging sites for conformation, hunt tests and banquets and coordinating all the
other details that go into planning our national. I have a more than forty year love
affair with Wyoming, the Tetons, Jackson Hole, and all the reminders of our western heritage. Returning to your beautiful state is always a little like coming home.
What will always stand out for me about this year’s national is the spirit of camaraderie. Fence-mending communication and good ideas were in abundance – the life
blood of an organization. If I accomplish nothing more than to keep this spirit
alive and well, I will consider my term a success.
For those of you who don’t know me – my husband, Duane, and I live in the heart
of Willamette Valley, Oregon. We’ve had American Water Spaniels for fourteen
years and have been club members for almost that long. In the past I’ve served the
Club as a director and then as Vice President plus chairing several committees. By
education and certification I am both a nurse and mental health counselor though in reality I’ve spent most of my professional career in leadership positions. Currently I work for a local hospital as a clinical manager, and when I’m not on hospital
time, you’ll most likely find me with our dogs, quilting, at a Ducks game, or in my most important job - being Nana to my
granddaughter, Kayla.
You may wonder what your officers and directors do between meetings. Speaking for your current board – we are very busy!
Our first meeting was immediately after the annual meeting, and at that meeting we approved the re-appointment of Beth
Lagimoniere as our AKC Delegate and voted to keep our dues the same as for the previous year. Our start up priorities are
developing a budget and re-appointing committees to carry on the work of the Club for the next year. I chose this start up
time as an opportunity to re-evaluate the effectiveness of our committee structure – something we should do periodically to
make sure we are making the best use of our members’ time and talents. Our new committee structure will distinguish between standing and special committees (standing committees being those that are expected to continue on from year to year
and special committees being those that exist for the duration of a task or project), and will have two national committees
working side by side. Some committees will be re-designated appointed positions. This does not restrict members from helping with projects, but removes positions from the more formal requirements of a committee. Additionally we have the
change in our rescue committee to consider. As an AKC parent club, we have a responsibility to provide rescue for our
breed. How we carry out that important responsibility over the next year is being given careful consideration.
There are a few other changes coming – mostly in the area of communication. Enhancing quality communication in a large
organization is always a challenge. Board meeting dates will soon be posted on the website as will a new Question and Answer area. I think if one of you is asking about, for instance, what breeds can run our hunt test, that more than one of you
might be interested in the answer. Additionally Sue and I will host a member call in – the first in November. This will be a
time to call in with suggestions, concerns, or questions and talk directly to a real person. Wow, that’s a concept isn’t it? The
intent is not to answer questions during the call, but to listen carefully and take your ideas and issues forward. Details including how to access the conference call line will be on the website.
As we work together over the next year, our focus should be the health and well-being of our dogs and the strength and effectiveness of our organization. Thank you for the opportunity to lead our club in this direction. Together we can always
make a difference for our dogs.

Vice-president’s Message
from George F. Zenk, Jr.
Well, here we are well into another hunting season for our little brown buddies. I don’t know about your brown hunting
buddies, but I swear mine know that it is hunting season and the level of excitement and activity escalates this time of the
year.
We have already had the opening of dove, sharptail grouse, partridge, early goose, and now the regular duck and goose season. I don’t know about you, but I am still walleye fishing. What a great time of the year. So many different outdoor sporting activities and not enough days to partake in all of them as often as we would like. For my money, it could remain fall all
year around.
I hope each and everyone of you take all the time you can to enjoy the little brown dogs and their hunting exploits.
Nationals are over for another year, and from all indications, it was a fairly successful event. Personally, I was unable to attend, but on behalf of the board, I wish to sincerely express a “thank you,” to all of you that chaired committees, managed
events, and carried out the activities of the organization at Nationals. Without your dedicated help and selfless volunteer
efforts, we would not be able to carry out the work of the club.
It seems that this years print on the Specialty shirt was a big hit. The board is discussing ways in which we can continue to
sell this years popular edition. Check the website for information. It would seem that the website will probably be the best
method for doing this.
I also want to welcome Sue Liemohn and Jeannie Wright to the board and we look forward to having their expertise on the
board. We also welcome David McCracken back for another term.
On another note, as we move forward into the new year, we are always looking for new volunteers to chair some of the committees and to work on the committees. I encourage you to step forward, particularly in an area of interest, and get involved
in the operation of your organization. You can make a difference by getting involved.
Take the time to get outdoors and enjoy the season.
Responsible Dog Ownership Day
Report submitted by David McCracken
On Saturday, September 15, Nappy, Bunny and I attended the
AKC's Responsible Dog Ownership Day (RDOD) in Raleigh,
NC as the representatives for the AWSC. This was the 2nd
annual RDOD and was held at two sites simultaneously; Raleigh and New York City. Events included a meet the breeds
area, with many unusual breeds represented (we were beside
some Finnish Lapphunds...a foundation stock dog used to
herd Reindeer in Finland), Canine Good Citizen testing, a microchip clinic ($20), an agility field, and a number of exhibitors
of dog related products. The event, held at the North Carolina
State Fairgrounds, started at 10:00 am and lasted until 2:00 pm.
Several thousand attended; most with dogs in tow.
As expected, very few people knew what an AWS was, or had
ever seen one. The most frequent guesses were Boykin Spaniel, Labradoodle, with a few Poodle comments thrown in. We
had literature available, and I was able to give it all out. People
were impressed with how calm 5 month old Bunny was.

feedback on the show. Even though
hunting is my specialty, I watched,
learned and enjoyed the park events.
After the show, everyone cleaned up
and headed to town for dinner and the
Specialty Awards banquet followed by
the Brown Bag Raffle fund raiser.
Many thanks to everyone who donated.
I believe the estimated total income
was around $1000.00.
On to Friday and the Roustabout - everyone’s’ favorite event. The weather
was perfect and so were the fields,
judges, and the many volunteers, with
Steve & Pam Boyer coming out the big
winners once again.
Steve Christiansen gets some needed sun
screen applied by new President Jean Wright.
Once again another 2nd weekend in
August has come and gone too fast.
One thing for sure is that I spent 5 days
in one of the prettiest parts of the U.S.
Afton is in a very beautiful valley in
southwestern Wyoming lined by mountains on both sides and sprinkled with
small towns full of friendly, helpful
people.
Around the first of July I had a phone
call from President, Linda Ford, explaining that George Zenk was unable
to attend national. After asking Linda
to call Jack Davies I accepted the position of Hunt Test Chairman and with
Jack’s expert help I think we pulled off
a very fun and relaxing AWS National
Hunt Test.
After months of planning and hard
work by Tim & Sharilee Malik, this
year’s sponsors, the 2007 Hunt Test &
Specialty Events was off and running.
A beautiful city park with a large pavilion was the site for the specialty show
on Thursday. I heard only positive
David and Lois McCracken coordinated a very funny, enjoyable, & eventful Water Derby. With many different
ways to win, (fastest time, slowest time,
funniest dogs, and many more), the
Water Derby was a big hit in 07. We
can only hope they will sponsor it again
next year.
After a long day in the field, it was off
to an excellent prime rib dinner, a very
enjoyable annual meeting, and lots of
dog talk with friends we don’t see
nearly enough.
Saturday morning everyone was up
early to test the dogs. The judges were
there, the dogs were there and we were
off and running after quickly setting up
two fields with the help of super-nice
judges. The dogs, judges, and handlers
hit the field. The day was perfect, the
birds were flying, and the dogs were
hunting! It just doesn’t get any better
than this.
The day is done, the dogs fed and put
up, then we went to the pavilion for
Bar-B-Q and a cold one. Now it was
time for Art Heun to play auctioneer,
and what a job he did! If you missed it,
I’m sorry, because it was a really good
time, bringing to the AWS club approximately $2000.00. Thanks to everyone that participated.
Sunday morning, shake out the cob
webs, up at 5:30AM, and rolling again.
The fields were set up, the water was
set up and there we go. Sunday went
really well, the dogs were scenting, the
birds were flushing, and with fewer
dogs entered, we finished up early.
It’s always a sad time when Sunday rolls
around because I know I won’t see so
many of the AWS club members that
are like my second family for another
year. That’s why I love this club and
can’t wait to see everyone next year in
Minnesota. Plan ahead and make your
reservations for Nationals next August
in Alexandria, MN. It will be our
fourth time at Elk Lake and it is always
a good time.
I’m closing now and I want to thank
the AWS club, Linda Ford, George
Zenk and the Hunt Test Events Committee for the opportunity to be the
Hunt Test Chairman this year. All my
thanks go out to every volunteer that
made this event a success. There are
way too many names to mention, the
bird planters, the gunners, the judges,
the marshals, and people who helped
set to and take down everything.
Last and by far the best, a very special
thank you goes out to two of my very
dearest friends, Jack and Kathy Davies
from Brainerd, Minnesota. Jack has
been a good friend and mentor to me
for several years and I have learned a
lot from these two beautiful people
who never, ever say no to helping the
AWS club. It’s sad to think I probably
won’t see them until next August in
Minnesota. Jack, Kathy, I love you
both!! Thank you!!

THE REVIEW
Page 14
Committee Reports
The following are condensed versions of the committee reports presented at the 2007 Annual Meeting.
Awards Committee - Patricia A. St.Onge, Committee Chair
Current year goal: To keep accurate count of ROM points, which include the newly added AKC working title of Rally.
Activities and accomplishments: There are two dogs that earned a ROM this year – which has been announced in
the newsletter and the owners will receive a plaque and booklet at the Awards banquet.
Carryover business for next year: The Pfiefer point system has been announced in the newsletter. If you are
running in NAHRA or UKC tests and want your passes to be counted for the Pfiefer award, please send me a copy of
the UKC pink pass or the dates that you passed in NAHRA.
Breeder Referral - Shirley Wilkens, Committee Chair
Current year goal: To respond as quickly as possible to all inquiries.
Activities and accomplishments: 48 – Requests for Breeder Referral Packets; 40 – Sent out packets; 8 – No response
for address requests
Carryover business for next year: I expect the requests and expenses to remain about the same as they have been for
the past two years unless prospective interested parties use the AWSC website for the information. Expenses from August 2006 through July 22, 2007 - $94.36
Constitution and Bylaws Committee - Paul Morrison, Committee Chair
Current year goal: To bring a proposed Bylaws revision before the membership of the AWSC for a vote.
Activities and accomplishments: The committee received recommended changes to its proposed Bylaws revisions
from the Board of Directors. The recommendations were considered and adopted. The Board then sent the proposed
Bylaws revisions to a Registered Parliamentarian for comment. His comments and suggestions were incorporated into
the document by the Board of Directors. The document was then sent to the membership for its review and comment.
At the present time, the membership comment period is still ongoing.
Carryover business for next year: The memberships’ comments on the proposed Bylaws revisions will be reviewed
and discussed by the committee. Changes made by the committee will be implemented and then the proposed Bylaws
revision will be sent back to the Board for its consideration. A further review by the parliamentarian may be in order as
well and will come at no extra cost. On numerous occasions the chairperson has recommend that the Board also have
the document reviewed by an attorney who is not a member of the AWSC and is licensed in the State of Wisconsin.
There has been no action taken on this recommendation. Once the Board has determined that the document is in its
final form and ready to be sent to the membership for a vote, it must be reviewed by the AKC. If the document meets
the AKC’s requirements it will then be ready to be sent to the membership for a final vote.
General Education Committee - Beth Lagimoniere, Committee Chair
Current year goal: Create AWSC publications: American Water Spaniel Owner’s Guide Attend December 2007 AKC

Hunting Events Committee - George Zenk, Committee Chair
Current year goal: Coordinate and facilitate the offering of Hunt Tests and RCT’s and approve same when appropriate
Activities and accomplishments: Have responded to three requests for information regarding Hunt Tests and RCT’s. Have
arranged for four judges for the Roustabout and Hunt Tests to be held at Nationals. Two are spaniel judges and two are retriever judges. The spaniel judges are David Stephenson, and Ron Klimes. The retriever judges are James Brannon, and Susan
Taylor.
David Stephenson and Ron Klimes will judge the Roustabout. Originally, I had arranged for six judges. Due to the small number of entrants, I had to call and cancel the assignments for two of the judges. Rooms have been reserved for the judges. Letters
were sent out to the judges. The letters included general information regarding rooms, meals, mileage, etc., and included Hunt
Test and RCT booklets. Have had new AWSC Hunt Test booklets printed. They are currently in my possession. Reviewed and
approved the position description for Hunting Events chairperson.
Carryover business for next year:
Judges (AKC conformation) Education Committee - Jean Wright, Committee Chair
Current year goal: To complete work on an education package including presentation materials and handouts for various educational venues. To develop a record of judges who are mentored by members, attend an AWSC presentation,
or attend a National Specialty. To develop a marketing plan for educational venues.
Activities and accomplishments: The Judges Education Committee wishes to thank the AWSC, Inc. Board of Directors for support throughout the year. Following is a list of committee activities:
•
The educational power point has had substantial re-work this year and is not yet ready for presentation; however,
it will be by years end.
•
Members have been asked for their most frequently asked questions about our breed. These will become a FAQ
sheet handout for use at seminars as well as available on the website for members who are mentoring judges.
•
We’ve had 4 invitations to present our breed at judging seminars. This year we chose to accept an invitation to
present at Westminster in 2008. Linda Hattrem and Sue Liemohn are lead for this project. We declined invitations to Pennsylvania and Oklahoma and delayed a presentation at the Spaniel Show. The committee is in favor
of a formal seminar as a part of national and plans will proceed to initiate that venture in 2008 at Alexandria.
AKC requested that we submit a list of approved mentors. That was done and we’ve since had 3 requests for
mentors.
•
Carryover business for next year:
•
Completion of the presentation and mentoring package.
•
Presentation of our breed at Westminster 2008 (DJAA).
•
Judging Seminar at National 2008.
•
Presentation of our breed at the 2009 Spaniel Show.
Library Committee - Pat Hamel and Linda Ford, Committee Chairs
Current year goal: To continue to collect material for the library.
Activities and accomplishments: Have sent about half of the library material to Pat Hamel. Hopefully when she is
fully recovered from illness the balance of the library will be sent to her. Have collected whatever material has been
found on the AWS.
Carryover business for next year: Continue to ask members to send any material for library to Linda Ford for now.
Continue to look for material on AWS in magazines, etc. No expected expenditures at this time.

Membership Committee - Patricia A. St.Onge, Comittee Chair
Current year goal: To treat all applicants and members equally. I do not play favorites with
anyone.
Activities and accomplishments: To continue to use form letters to help ensure that all are treated the same. To
continue to do as I have been doing. To continue to process the applications as quickly as possible. I have sent out 17
new member packets since the previous annual meeting.
Carryover business for next year: Expenditures: I donate the postcards that are used in notifying new member
applicants. I donate the 4 printed pages that go in each packet – the approximate cost is 28 cents per packet. All other
expenses are turned in to the club for payment. The cost of the member packet by regular mail usually is about 3.95 per
packet,
for the extra ten cents, the packet is sent by priority mail of $4.05
Mentoring Committee - Linda Ford, Committee Chair
Current year goal: Make new members feel welcome to club
Activities and accomplishments: Contacted new members and welcomed them to the club. Sent them a brochure on
things they can do with their dogs. Have mentors at Nationals
Carryover business for next year: Continue to contact new members and send out brochures. No expected expenditures at this time.
Nationals - Sharilee Malik, Committee Chair

Policy Committee - Jean Wright, Committee Chair
Current year goal: To develop AWSC policies and procedures based on AWSC, Inc. By-Laws, AWSC, Inc. Articles of Incorporation and Wisconsin Statutes for Non-Stock Corporations. To develop position descriptions for key appointed positions. For purposes of
this committee the following definitions are used:
• Policy is a statement of intent. A general statement that reflects the way specific actions are to be handled by the club.
• Procedure is an outline for a process – a detailed step by step description of how to do a specified task or process.
• Position Description describes the primary tasks or essential functions of a specified position.
All procedures and position descriptions need periodic review to ensure that they reflect the current needs and practices of the Club.
Activities and accomplishments: The Committee wishes to thank the AWSC, Inc. Board of Directors for its support over the past
year both with participating committee members who never once complained about wearing two hats and for speedy feedback and approval of completed work.
The following procedures are in place as a result of 2006 and 2007 work by this committee:

Rescue Committee - Holly Lewis, Committee Chair
Current year goal: Continue rescue activities
Activities and accomplishments: From Sept 2006-Aug 2007
Rescue interacted with at least 24 dogs during the above time frame.
•Adopted out 0 - Available through rescue 2 - Unknown outcome 3 - Could not take/unknown outcome 1
•Rehomed outside of rescue (although often with personal assistance from rescue members) 4
•Returned to breeder 4 - Euthanized within rescue 2 - Euthanized outside of rescue 2 - Referred to Boykin rescue 3
•Were not AWS or Boykin 3
Clyde is a 6-7 year old male being fostered in WI. He is from the hoarder and has been with rescue since Sept. He is a
good dog that needs to be placed in a home without other dogs. He responds extremely well to positive and treat training. Clyde does well with cats. His foster parent has been working with him to feel comfortable with other dogs and he
is making progress. He is a very loving boy who loves to play fetch.
Koko was recently taken into rescue. Paul Olsen is in charge of the case. He is being fostered by the Parkers. Information and evaluation are pending.
We continue to work closely with Boykin Rescue and the email list of Help4CurlyBrownDogs. As well, the breeder list
continues to be notified of dogs with unknown breeder. While none of these contacts have resulted in verification of a
dog from a certain breeder, it continues a positive relationship between rescue and breeders and keeps open dialogue.
Carryover business for next year: Continue as previous
Statistics: AKC Titles and Hunt Tests Committee - Patricia A. St.Onge, Committee Chair
Current year goal: To maintain accurate records of all AWS’s earning AKC, AWSC, Inc, NARHRA hunt test titles
and when owners submit copies of the certificates of hunt test titles earned with HRC. To maintain accurate records of
all AWS’s earning AKC titles of record.
Activities and accomplishments: As AWS’s earn AKC, AWSC, Inc, NARHRA, HRC titles of record, reports are
sent to the newsletter for publication. AKC is sent a list of AWS’s that complete the RCT requirements so those dogs
are then eligible to earn AKC hunt test titles.
Carryover business for next year: To continue to record AKC, AWSC, Inc, NARHRA, HRC titles of record, send
reports to the newsletter, send AKC names of AWS’s that have completed the RCT requirements. To continue to send
out certificates to owners of dogs that have completed RCT requirements and certificates and ring bands to owners of
dogs that have earned AWSC, Inc. hunt test titles.
Statistician: All Events Except AKC Conf. Titles & Hunt Tests - Jayne Kamau, Committee Chair
Current year goal: To submit reports in a timely and accurate fashion
Activities and accomplishments: To provide information regarding breed standings and performance activities of the
AWS. This will be made easier by the AKC’s new Awards Book format on disc instead of on paper.
Carryover business for next year: As above

Committee Restructuring
With the dawn of a new Board of Directors came a call to look at restructuring the committees that exist within our club and
a possible consolidation of duties. What resulted from this examination was the following:
•
A number of committees were changed to one person appointments because the work was essentially being completed
by one individual.
•
A distinction was made between standing committees (those that perform a continuing function and remain in existence
until the end of the next annual meeting) and special committees (those that cease to exist as soon as they have completed their specific task or their time span has expired).
•
Some new committees were formed.
•
The issue of the number of Board members required to serve on committees was revisited and we are currently awaiting
a written opinion from the club’s attorney.
•
As has always been the case, every committee remains subject to the final authority of the Board of Directors.
•
The Board of Directors will appoint all members serving on a committee or given a specific position. Committee chairs
may submit names for the individuals they wish to have serve on their committees but all appointments are subject to
Board approval.
The following committees - standing and special - and appointed positions now exist to assist the Board in carrying out the
work and efforts of the club. Some committee descriptions are currently established while others are yet to be fully determined. Anyone wishing to serve on a committee should notify the Board of Directors.

5 Tips for Easier Vet Visits
submitted by Beth Lagimoniere
General Education Chair
larger or aggressive animals that might
be in the waiting room, but for larger
animals a pet carrier may not be an
option. A shorter leash or halter is best
in this situation as it provides more
control for the dog owner and prevents tangling with other animals or
furniture. Leashes also provide a handhold for cases where aggressive behaviors amongst animals might otherwise
get out of control.
Courtesy of I-Love-Dogs.com
Taking your pet to the veterinarian’s
office can be an adventure all on its
own. There are so many sights,
sounds, smells and other sensations
that your pet can easily become quite
excited or agitated to the point that
control is difficult. Multiply this by the
ever rotating average of 10 or more
pets in a busy waiting room and mass
pandemonium could be the result.
Without proper training and control, a
veterinarian’s waiting room might
quickly become a bedlam of scales,
feather and fur as the animals all compete for space and attention. So what
can you do to make the trip less stressful for your pet, yourself, your vet and
the staff? There are five basic points
that will make any visit, less of an odyssey.
First, be certain to leash or halter train
your dog if you do not plan on using a
pet carrier for transport. A pet carrier
is ideal for small animals as this provides them a measure of security as
they have their own personal space,
and it also gives them protection from
Secondly, consider muzzle training for
your pet. Many veterinarian hospitals
now request you to muzzle your pet.
This is for the safety of other patients
as well as the staff. A muzzle will simply fit around a dog's mouth area and
prevent biting but to a dog that is unfamiliar with the device this can be a
very frightening experience. Giving
your pet the opportunity to learn
about this device in a non-threatening
environment can make the office visit
much less traumatic.
A third tip is not to forget the rewards.
Unless your veterinarian has requested
your dog have no food for specific
purposes, such as testing, or if they do
not allow food in the waiting room,
feel free to bring along a treat for your
pet. This will help them to feel more at
ease with the new surroundings and
help to keep their focus on you rather
than on getting a closer look at the
iguana on a leash in the corner. It also
gives you the chance to continue the
training lessons while waiting for your
pet to be called back to the exam
rooms. Plus, your dog will think
you are really cool and, if you are
lucky, so will that cute receptionist you've had your eye on.
Fourth, keep track of your pet's
medical records. Is your pet allergic to anything? Is she up to
date on her vaccination shots?
How old is he? Has your pet had
any surgeries, major illnesses or
parasites? These things are all important to know and could be potentially
life threatening if you didn't keep them
current. Regular visit to the vet and
being current on shots is always a good
idea. Why risk losing your precious
friend to some disease that is virtually
non-existent over a measly few dollars?
Plus, visiting the vet regularly will help
your pet to become more relaxed with
the office settings and they will respond better.
For our fifth tip, let's party. Socializing
your pet to other people and animals
prior to vet visits is a great idea provided they are current on their vaccinations. This allows them to learn acceptable behaviors around other animals and what the boundaries of interaction are. Hosting a puppy party is a
great way to do this. Invite several
other dog owners over to visit and
serve a modest picnic or potluck type
meal. Encourage the dogs to play and
interact together and with the other
owners. This will help them to learn
what you will and will not accept and
helps you to determine potential problem areas.
Following these simple tips can make
vet visits less traumatic on all involved
and much easier to cope with. You will
thank yourself later. Your pet will
thank you and so will the staff at the
vet's office.

AKC Delegate Report
submitted by Beth Lagimoniere
AWSC AKC Delegate
The election of the AKC Delegate Committees was conducted at the September meeting and I am pleased to announce that I was
elected by the Delegate body to serve a 2-year term on the Field Trial and Hunting Test Events Committee. The goals of the Delegate Standing Committees and the charge of the FTHTE Committee is as follows:
Delegate Standing Committee Goals:
A. To provide the broad-based independent involvement of the Delegates in matters affecting the dog fancy.
B. To identify and utilize the expertise within the Delegate Body and within the fancy.
The Field Trial and Hunting Test Events Committee:
To share information and procedures useful to field trial and hunting test clubs.
To find ways of making field trial and hunting test clubs and their events more effective and efficient in serving the needs
of their members and their communities.
To support the role of field trial and hunting test clubs and events in enhancing and preserving the working skills of the
breeds involved.
One of the committee’s first agenda topics will be negative legislation related to performance events – ban on hunting events, land
use, etc. If you have any information on this topic that you would like to submit, please forward to me at [email protected]
AKC’S canine legislative position statement on the use of dogs in sporting, working, and competition activities states, “The American Kennel Club encourages and strongly supports the interaction and mutual enjoyment of owners and dogs in sporting activities
such as hunting and field trials; in working circumstances such as herding, tracking, and pulling; and in competition events such as
dog shows, obedience trials, agility trials, and other performance events and tests. The AKC believes that dogs should be properly
cared for, humanely trained, and not pushed beyond reasonable limits for which they were bred.”
The AWSC is in need of someone to fill the position of Legislative Liaison. This role is essential to protecting our rights as stated
above in AKC’s position statement. Any negative canine legislation in any part of the country ultimately affects AWS owners where
ever they live. Please consider volunteering to be the AWSC Legislative Liaison to help alert our members of pending legislation so
they can become more active in the process. For more information, please see the page titled “AKC Legislative Liaison Program”.

The Loss of a Friend
submitted by Paul Morrison
September 11 has come to be known as
one of those ominous historical dates
stirring countless emotions and memories. Now, those of us who came to
know Marilyn Barth as a champion of
the American Water Spaniel, a longtime AWS breeder, and a dear friend,
will have but one more reason
for our emotions to be stirred
on that date. Mary, as she preferred to be called in AWS circles, passed away in her sleep on
September 11, 2007.
call. Once more, true to Mary’s graciousness, whenever I asked for copies
of such items Mary would not hesitate
to send me that which I had requested
and often even more.
It was this graciousness, and her pleasant, soft spoken, manner that endeared
so many people to Mary. Despite what
Mary and her late husband John
operated Swan Lake Kennels in
Pardeeville, WI since the 1960s
and were early members of the
AWSC. Over the years they
established their kennel and line
of AWS as an influential force
in the breed and became well
known for breeding dogs with
strong hunting drive. While
some of their dogs went on to
become conformation Champions, obedience title holders, top
agility dogs, and holders of hunt
test titles, nothing was more
important to both Mary and
John than producing good field
dogs.
I first came to know Mary in
1987 when I ordered my first
AWS puppy; a pup I would
have to wait nearly a year to get
because of the demand for
Swan Lake puppies. Both before and
after I placed my order for that pup,
Mary was always willing to answer
questions that I had regarding the
breed and never seemed to tire of my
countless questions. As my time in the
breed grew and I became more and
more interested in its history I found
Mary to be a wealth of knowledge and
a close equivalent to a historical librarian with countless copies of magazine
articles, old pedigrees, books, and other
historical information at her beckon
others might say or do, Mary seldom
had a crass word and often looked
ahead with a positive outlook on the
future. She was a good story teller too
and I enjoyed many long conversations
about her hunting exploits during my
visits to her home. I remember her being especially proud of her prowess at
hunting turkey and deer. We all laughed
at some of her stories and one could
see how proud she was to be a successful outdoors woman. Mary had been a
physical education teacher and was es-
pecially interested in promoting outdoor activities, including hunting, to
girls and women. Perhaps it was that
interest and influence that lead her
daughter Ellen to a career with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources; a point on which Mary was
especially proud.
Mary and John served as
mentors to many in the AWS
world but chiefly they were
often known as friends;
friends to their puppy buyers,
to other AWS enthusiasts,
and primarily to the breed. In
an era where some people try
to dictate what people do
with their AWS, Mary simply
encouraged everyone with a
little brown dog to just enjoy
it in whatever way suited
them best. The way that
suited Mary best was to see
the dogs performing in the
field and it made her very
excited to know that the pups
she and John produced were
excelling as hunting dogs. I
always took great pleasure in
calling at the end of the hunting season to share stories of
my Swan Lake dogs’ work
that season and to talk about
what was on tap for Swan
Lake Kennels in the coming
year. Mary never failed to ask
how the other dogs in my
kennel were doing as well.
She was not solely concerned about her
pups but about all the AWS, their successes and failures. Simply put, Mary
was one of the nicest people ever to be
a part of the AWS community.
In a recent conversation with Ellen
Barth I learned that Swan Lake Kennels will continue on for a while to
come. That is a loving and fitting tribute to the devotion that both Mary and
John had for the American Water
Spaniel.

Pfeiffer Award Points Standings
submitted by Patty St.Onge
We are off to a great start with owners running their dogs in various types of hunt tests and earning points towards the Pfeiffer award.
The Pfeiffer Award requires that accurate records be kept of hunt test passes in all venues. We are unable to get a report of
the AWS passes from AKC and the Hunting Retriever Club. Results are published in the AKC Awards and reported on the
AKC website and in the Hunting Retriever magazine but it is very time consuming to go through those results to find the
AWS’s. Because of that, we are requesting that owners of AWS
1. In AKC hunting tests send a note including the full name of the dog, its registration number and the date of the
passes.
2. In NAHRA hunting tests send a note including the full name of the dog, its registration number and the date of the
passes.
These passed will be verified upon the publication of the results in the NAHRA newsletter
In HRC tests send a copy of their pink receipts, which will be verified from the publication of the results in the Hunting Retriever newsletter
Information is to be sent to Patricia A. St. Onge, 4835 S. Mill Loop Rd. Maple, WI 54854. All passes will then be verified
when published in the AKC Awards or on the AKC website or the NAHRA newsletter or the Hunting Retriever magazine.

Getting a Puppy?
The American Water Spaniel Club, Inc. suggests that you may want to ask some of the following questions of breeders:
• How many years have you been breeding AWS?
• How many litters have you bred?
• Do you show your dogs at AKC or AWSC events? If yes, in which areas: agility, breed/conformation, hunt
tests, obedience, rally, or tracking?
• How many AWS have you bred or owned that have earned the following titles?
• AKC - Agility, Championship (breed/conformation), Hunt Tests, Obedience, Rally, Tracking
• NAHRA - Hunt Tests
• UKC & UKC/HRC - Agility, Championship (breed/conformation, hunting), Hunt Tests, Obedience
• Which of the following genetic examinations do you routinely obtain on all of your breeding stock? OFA
hip certification, OFA heart certification, CERF eye certification?
• How do you temperament/aptitude test your puppies?
• At what age do your puppies go to their new homes?
• Why did you choose to breed these two particular dogs to each other?
• What physical characteristics and personality traits do you expect from this breeding?
• What guarantee do you give with a puppy?
• Price?
