PSC Scores Major Grant To Grow Special Needs Soccer Program
The Pickering Soccer Club created the Special Needs Soccer Program
in 2008 to address the lack of opportunities for children and youth with
special needs to participate in quality sports programs. In partnership with
Special Olympics, an organization dedicated to using sport as a vehicle
and stage for demonstrating the dignity and capability of people with intellectual disabilities, the program allows children of all abilities the simple
pleasure of playing soccer.
“My athletes love to pull on their uniform, join their teammates and
coaches, and enjoy the great outdoors playing the beautiful game”, states
Program Director Franco Taverna. “We are very lucky in this community
to have so many dedicated volunteers coaching and mentoring the players.”
The program offers 1:1 coach to athlete ratio, as needed, thanks to numerous volunteers, club players and local students. Now, the PSC will launch
a major new initiative, “Soccer 4 Life”, thanks to a major grant from the
Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Government of Ontario.
“This grant will allow us to develop a model program for athletes and
volunteers within our community soccer club”, said PSC President Phil
Frampton. The 2-year commitment will establish a volunteer-friendly
program that ensures everyone can enjoy the benefits of soccer, build
healthy active families, and help special needs players be the best
they can be.
Goals of the grant program include staff, coach, and volunteer training to best serve the special needs athlete, integration of special needs
athletes into recreational programs, developing special supports, modifications or accommodations to ensure full enjoyment of participation
by both the disabled athletes and their families, and creating pathways
for participation and competition beyond the local community.
benefit the most from their participation in sport”, states Franco
Taverna. “This will be a model program that other clubs can follow”.
The Pickering Soccer Club’s Special Needs Summer Program will start
after Victoria Day. The cost is just $10 for the season and includes uniform, ball, picture, year end session and party, all club related activities such as picture day festival, and a whole lotta fun! See the PSC

Pickering Soccer Club 2011 Season
To all Club members, families,
supporters, sponsors, and volunteers:
A Special Thanks To Our
2011 Club Sponsors & Supporters
Welcome to our 27th outdoor soccer season and Pickering’s Bicentennial! The soccer fields are ready, the lines are
painted, uniforms are being distributed, all that is left is the first whistle to get a new season of the “beautiful game”
underway. There are many events occurring this summer, beginning with the Mayor’s Cup which kicked off April
29th, our Garage Sale, our annual Club Festival/Picture Day, as well as our participation in events to celebrate the
200th anniversary of the City of Pickering. All our events will be posted on our website during the season, plus we
will distribute the information through the team coaches. We look forward to your support. We continue to be affiliated with the Toronto FC, with their staff providing valuable pre-season training sessions to our team coaches, and
we also have tickets available for selected home games. On behalf of the Club, thank you to all our sponsors, both
new and returning, who continue to give their financial support that enables the PSC to provide quality programs
to our members. I would also like to thank the numerous
volunteers, who give so generously of their time to all levels
of our programs, from team coaches and their assistants, to
event organizers, right up to the Board of Directors, without
whom the success of this club would not be possible – thank
you. To all our players and their supporters, from the Under
3’s to those where age is not the issue, have a wonderful
season and I look forward to seeing you all having fun out
at the fields, and being enthusiastically cheered on.
The Pickering Soccer Club gratefully acknowledges the generous support of our Community Partners who sponsor our recreation teams, our divisions, our programs and our club. The businesses that sponsor our Club are
helping fund the costs of our programs and enabling youth to play soccer in Pickering. We are truly grateful for
your support and generosity and we thank you.
Yours in soccer,
Phil Frampton, President

Pickering U16 Girls Team
Win 2010 Nationals
First, the Pickering Power U16 girls were Ontario Cup champions. The girls brought home the crown following a 2-1 victory over the North London Galaxy in the Cup final, played at the OSA Soccer Centre in Vaughan.
Right from the opening kick Pickering pressured with their attack, however, it was North London that would
strike for the game’s opening goal, as they beat Pickering keeper Margaret Carmichael in the 17th minute. From
there Pickering was forced to play comeback. Again with the pressure attack they generated a few chances, but it
wasn’t until the 31st minute that they were able to tie the affair at 1-1 on a goal by Nichelle Prince off a header.
After a mostly quiet second half of play, Prince was at it again late, striking for the go-ahead goal in the final
minutes. The Power would hold on from there to be crowned champions. With the final being held in Vaughan,
the Power had a great following of people along for the ride as many friends and family members, club staff
and members of the local soccer community filled the stands at the OSA Centre to take in Pickering’s triumph.
Then, the U16 girls won the Canadian title at the BMO National Championships held in Vaughan beating the
Montreal Extreme 4-1 in the championship game. Despite the tournament being so close to home, Pickering head
coach Paul Deabreu said his team treated it like an out-of-town venture, using fundraising money to spend five
days in a hotel. The plan brought the team closer together, posting wins of 8-0 over West Prince Storm (PEI), 7-0
over St. John’s Capital Hyundai (NL) and 3-1 over Eastside Eagles (Sask.) in the round robin to secure a spot
in the semifinal against Blizzard Threat from Alberta. “We knew that would be our fiercest competition,” said
Deabreu of the semi. “It was sad. We ended up playing each other in what should have been the final game.” As
expected the game was close, with Pickering coming out ahead 3-2, booking a spot in the final against the Quebec
representative. That contest against Montreal Extreme was anti-climactic, said Deabreu.
“We set a goal a year ago when I took this team over and this is what we were after. As a coach you set high goals
but you don’t know if it’s going to happen. You work hard to get it accomplished and the girls were superb; a
class act. They trained hard and worked hard.” The team didn’t lose a game in Canada, and lost just three during
the season, all coming in the United States.

Become a PSC Juggling Master
WHY JUGGLE?: Juggling is the art of keeping the soccer ball from hitting the ground by bouncing it off of one’s
foot, knee/leg, head, chest, back or shoulders (no hands or arms as in a game). Soccer juggling will strengthen a
player’s overall ball control and game. Juggling is a fundamental soccer skill that is a must in establishing good
“touch” with the soccer ball.
The Technical Team Coach provides technical services, consulting and support to the operation of
PSC’s coaching, training and development programs. A long-range goal for our Technical Team
is to help develop and implement our Long Term
Player Development program. We address Long
Term Player development in several ways:
BENEFITS OF JUGGLING: Gain
more confidence on the ball while
increasing overall skill. When juggling, learning to control the body is
very important. Being able to make
quick, bodily adjustments with all
muscles is developed through juggling. Better balance will enable a
soccer player to move to the right,
while maintaining balance to shoot
the ball to the left, etc.
1. Our technical team has representation with
diverse soccer experience and expertise.
2. We will develop both club “best practices”
and technical guidelines that all Coaches are
strongly encouraged to adopt.
3. With our club Head Coach, we provide individual teams with hands-on assistance in addressing specific technical issues and team problems.
CLUB RULES: Coaches must witness the juggling feat to qualify. As
each player reaches a new level of
juggling they will receive a 1” color-coded patch they can apply to the
right sleeve of their team jerseys.
4. We will build a consensus on an “In - House”
player development program, and ensure
implementation.

Pickering Soccer Club 2011 Season
Player Development Clinics
Sports Related Concussions
The Pickering Soccer Club is offering a skill development program for recreational players registered with
the Pickering Soccer Club for only $40.00. The Development program is for Boys and Girls in the U7 - U14
age bracket.
Sports related concussions are increasingly being recognized as a very serious issue. With superstars like Sydney
Crosby out with a brain injury (yes, that is what a concussion is – a brain injury) the topic is getting more airtime.
Each group will practice once per week for a total of 8 sessions. All sessions
will run on Saturday mornings. (June 18, 25) (July 9, 16, 23) (Aug 6, 13, 20).
The start times and field locations will be posted on our website.
This program is supplementary to the player’s regular team training designed
to help develop both individual skills and team skills. Our skills sessions
are run by experienced technical coaches giving players the opportunity to
develop age appropriate skills. The most committed players enroll in the RDP
on a weekly basis (no tryouts required) and enjoy the opportunity to train with
the certified coaching staff of the PSC Technical Department.
It is now known that the effects of concussions are cumulative. That is, the brain injury that comes with a
concussion never heals completely - and each additional concussion makes it far worse. There is only so
much brain damage one can sustain before they are no longer able function normally. Soccer players are
vulnerable because of heading (or collisions) – and a child’s brain is even more vulnerable to brain injury. It
is recommended children do not head the ball until at least 11-12 years of age and even then only after being
properly coached to do so. Let’s be careful to keep our children safe from brain injuries that could affect
them for their whole lives.
The links below are to learn about concussions; prevent them; and be better
prepared to deal with them when they happen. The brain is not something
we want to fool around with.
The sessions focus on skill development, passing, receiving, dribbling,
shooting/finishing, heading, crossing as well as the development of
technical, strategic, tactical, creative, physical and mental skills using
a combination of basic and advanced development drills, and dynamic,
game-situation environments.

2011 PSC Introduces a New MENS
RECREATIONAL League!
The Speed Academy
= Athlete Development
Love of the Beautiful Game is hopefully a lifelong thing. Many of you
played as a youth and perhaps now
coach your own children. Why not
play yourself?
Why is this program important for our players?
The physical component of player development,
including flexibility, balance, agility, coordination,
speed, endurance, is critical for athlete development. The highest level soccer players, are simply
faster, stronger, quicker, more agile, and more balanced. Some research has even suggested that this
is at least as important as soccer skills – that is, the
biggest difference between an international level
player and a national or provincial level player is the
physical component.
PSC is pleased to announce that this
year, our Recreational program is
expanding again and we are introducing our successful format from
Recreational Women’s and Co-Ed soccer to the men (over 25 years of age) of
Pickering and surrounding areas.
It begins early – things like flexibility/suppleness are very important and are best developed before age 10.
If not developed, it is hard to catch up, and older players without this early training are simply less agile, balanced, and coordinated. We have noticed that many of our older players are not flexible – if they were, they
would be even better soccer players and this greatly aids in balance, coordination, and quickness.
Register now to join us on Sunday
nights for a robust game of soccer in
our new Men’s Recreational League.
Founded on a desire to have fun, get
some healthy exercise and play the
beautiful game for the sheer enjoyment
of it; we can’t wait to get started!
The Speed Academy’s programs are well aligned with LTPD, developing the right components (eg. flexibility
at a young age, strength/endurance at older ages) at the right developmental stages.
We urge you to allow all of our players to participate – they will benefit for a lifetime.
