International School Manila d September 11, 2015 A weekly bulletin for Parents and Students For ATTENDANCE concerns, please contact the HS Office (Sam Ramos or Laurie Atilano) Tel: 840 8650 / 840 8653 Email [email protected] For COUNSELING or IB/AP concerns, please contact Eloisa, Nyla or Tina Tel: 840-8655 / 840-8660 MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATION: Dear Parents, In this era of trying to quantify success and be data driven in our decision-making, I am frequently and it seems increasingly, drawn to other less specific measures of how well we are doing as a high school. Sometimes all it takes is a walk around the corridors, (to visit some classes, to watch the play rehearsal or the varsity team train or play, or attend a student led conference like last week’s GINILA, or to have experts in their field visit, like Steve Money, Kath Murdoch and the FCD Counselors), to realize that even without any benchmarking data points we have a very good school and one that is actively trying to always get better. One of the anecdotal outcomes of this success that I am fortunate to hear is when our former students return for a visit. This past week I spoke with two former students and I asked them how well (or not), had ISM prepared them for University. They replied as follows; “ISM prepared me so well, because ISM cares”, and “IB was the most useful thing, it really paid off for me”, and finally “The thing about ISM was we were doing, what some kids at college still don’t know now, when we were in grade 9!” Now just in case you think I am over stating my own subjective opinion, I include on the right, one of our most stringent measures of comparison with the rest of the world, our external IB Diploma results. You can see from the graphic that ISM (in green) performs significantly better than the world average in (blue) and this performance is further enhanced when you take into the account that ISM has an “open door policy” on the IB Diploma and that approximately 80% of the senior class were involved. For a large inclusive IB school, these are outstanding results. On a related but separate note I am sure you are hearing from your son or daughter about Battle of the Bearcats(BOB), which will take rd place on Wednesday 23 September. This is a day when we go completely off schedule to promote class and school spirit and is a day packed full of activity, energy, enthusiasm and enjoyment! It is a an amazing day, organized entirely by the student body association, ISSBA. Have a great weekend and stay dry!
