From the stunning Penobscot Narrows Bridge and
Observatory at Bucksport, across the Blue Hill
Peninsula to Mount Desert Island and points Downeast,
this region offers some of Maine’s most spectacular
scenic landscapes, rich history and lively local culture.
The celebrated resort town of Bar Harbor, adjacent to Acadia National Park, has
welcomed visitors for more than a century and serves as a hub for the region.
Desert Island, but smaller sections can be
found on Isle Au Haut and Schoodic Point.
Hikers, birders, artists, sea kayakers—all are
drawn to Acadia’s dramatic coastline. The
summit of Cadillac Mountain, first place in
America to catch the morning light, is also a
prime spot for hawk watching.

Acadia National Park – Courtesy Phillip Duncan
George B. Dorr offered 6,000 acres to
the U.S. government for conservation, land
that President Woodrow Wilson designated
Sieur de Monts National Monument. In 1919,
Lafayette National Park was established.
Acadia received its present name in 1929,
and today it is rated among the 10 mostvisited national parks. The park has about
47,000 acres (including conservation
easements), encompassing mountains,
lakes, forest and shoreline. For many people,
a Maine vacation would not be complete
without a visit to Acadia.
In the tradition of its founders, individuals
have donated all of the park’s lands.
Between 1915 and 1933, John D. Rockefeller Jr.
contributed more than 11,000 acres and built
the wonderful carriage roads. These broad,
Samuel Champlain explored the area
that now includes Acadia National Park
in 1604, naming it “Isle des Monts Desert”
because of the bare granite summits. In

smooth, graveled byways delight equestrians,
hikers, bicyclists, snowshoers and cross-country
skiers. The carriage roads encircle Jordan Pond
and Eagle Lake and wind around Sargent and
Penobscot Mountains, providing stunning
views of Frenchman Bay and Somes Sound.
Northern and temperate climate zones
overlap here, resulting in an abundance of
wildlife, including 300 species of birds. The
park also offers:
• More than 120 miles of hiking trails with
breathtaking views;
• Two campgrounds;
• Park Loop Road, a 20-mile drive starting at
the Hulls Cove Visitor Center, that brings you
to Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs,
Jordan Pond and the summit of Cadillac
Mountain. A self-guiding tape is available at
the Visitor Center.
• Swimming beaches with lifeguards (one on
the ocean at Sand Beach, one at warmer
Echo Lake).
• The Wild Gardens of Acadia at Sieur de
Monts Spring, where more than 400 plants
are labeled and displayed in their habitat.
Start your visit to Acadia at Hulls Cove
Visitor Center, open from mid-April through
October 31. Ask for a schedule of ranger-led
activities that include boat cruises, hikes, walks,
talks, children’s programs and evening
programs. During the winter, visit Park
Headquarters on Highway 233, three miles
west of Bar Harbor.
Most of the park is located on Mount
Desert Island, easily accessible by car from
Bangor and the coast. Hancock County
Airport is minutes away. The Island Explorer
shuttle bus picks visitors up at their lodging or
campground and links them to destinations
across Mount Desert Island and into Acadia
National Park. The service is supported in part
by park fees, so the ride is fare-free. The shuttle
operates from late June to mid-October.

Plan your spring arrival
10
l
As if anticipating the busy season ahead,
spring arrives with a rush of color, songbirds
and sparkling water. Families and outdoor
enthusiasts return to Maine year after year for
a spring whitewater rafting adventure, canoe
trip or fly-fishing expedition. Others come for
the fabulous spring skiing, the warbler
migration, or a guided moose safari. Spring
also heralds a rush of culinary delights as our
award-winning chefs get creative with the
season’s freshest local ingredients—
from just-harvested fiddleheads to justly
famous seafood. Every year, there are more
reasons to love springtime in Maine.
11
There’s only
one Vacationland
12
What makes summer in Maine so special?
For some, it’s our magnificent coast with its
miles of clean, sandy beaches, quintessential
fishing villages, and historic downtowns.
Others come for our tranquil lakeside retreats
and spectacular mountain vistas. There are
rivers to fish, kayak and canoe, and trails to
walk, hike and bike. The season brings
community festivals and summer theater, art
shows and lobster bakes, Windjammer cruises
and amazing local cuisine––all great excuses
to try something new in Vacationland.
However you define the perfect summer,
you’ll find more of it here in Maine.
13
Make a brilliant getaway
14
y
Fall was once Maine’s best-kept secret.
No longer! Visitors have discovered our lively
harvest festivals, sparkling clear weather, and
of course, Mother Nature’s brilliant display.
Against a backdrop of rocky coastline and
mountain pines, Maine’s vivid maples and
oaks set the scene for hiking, biking,
paddling and golf. Fall brings food and wine
celebrations, agricultural fairs, and music
festivals. Colorful farmers’ markets and
produce stands beckon. Apple orchards
invite you to “pick your own.” Birders spot
migrating hawks, warblers and shorebirds.
And there’s more: Fall is peak season for
Maine lobster, too.
15
Warm up to winter
16
Come play in our winter wonderland—
there are so many playgrounds to choose
from! Skiers and snowboarders appreciate
the variety, beauty and challenge of Maine’s
ski resorts and community mountains.
Cross-country skiers will find Nordic centers
throughout the state. The frozen lakes attract
skaters and ice-fishing enthusiasts alike.
And Maine is a snowmobiler’s paradise,
with thousands of miles of groomed
interconnected trails. Holiday festivals create
playgrounds of another sort, filled with
music, entertainment, shopping and great
food. So whether you come for the outdoor
fun or the cozy hospitality, Maine offers
more ways to warm up to winter.
17
A celebrated
culinary destination
18
There’s a reason Maine is a culinary
hot spot. Our chefs are earning national
recognition, our seafood is considered
world-class, and food writers are raving about
the quality and creativity of our restaurants.
From classic lobster shacks up and down the
coast to casual pubs and bistros to celebrated,
award-winning restaurants, Maine is the place
to enjoy inventive cuisine and fresh, local
ingredients. Bring your appetite, explore our
culinary scene and discover irresistible
cheeses, chocolates, gelato, microbrews,
wine, spirits and so much more.
19
Rare finds and
Maine-made treasures
20
One of the best reasons to poke around
Maine’s small villages, historic districts and
lively downtowns is this: You never know what
cool, one-of-a-kind, only-in-Maine treasure
you’ll find! Maine is renowned as a place to
find high-quality, handcrafted goods—from
pottery, jewelry and furniture to glasswork,
apparel and artisan foods. Of course, we are
also famous for our factory outlets, antique
shops and roadside flea markets. When in a
shopping mood, check out our malls,
galleries and boutiques and then go
exploring. There’s always more to discover
around the next bend.
21
The great outdoors,
as you like it
22
Sleep under the stars, tee off in the
shadow of a mountain, catch the nation’s
first sunrise, gaze at whales, puffins or moose.
Maine is a state with infinite outdoor
opportunities—and there’s something for
everyone. Active adventures like whitewater
rafting, hiking, mountain biking or sea
kayaking are available for all ages and
abilities, with guides and outfitters to help
you plan. Golf, birding, biking, fishing,
sailing, skiing, snowmobiling…it’s all right
here. Come experience more of the great
outdoors in Maine.
23
Celebrating a way of life
24
e
From the mountains to the great north
woods to the magnif icent coast, people
have settled and flourished in Maine for
thousands of years, leaving a rich and diverse
cultural heritage that is celebrated today.
The Windjammers that grace our harbors
speak of Maine’s maritime past. Indian
basket makers and storytellers help preserve
Maine’s Wabanaki heritage. There are logging
museums, Acadian festivals, lobster, clam
and seafood celebrations, agricultural fairs,
the Art Museum Trail, and more—inviting
you to discover the heritage of Maine.

Maine treasures its outstanding natural beauty. With over
a million acres of state parks, nature preserves and public
lands, our parks are as varied as the landscape—mountains,
lakes, rivers, seashore, salt marshes and bottomland, as well
as the last, extensive wilderness area in the East.
While Maine’s Public Reserved Lands offer true solitude and an authentic backcountry
experience, the State Parks System ensures safe access to wild places for visitors with all

Cuisine
Foodies take notice: Maine’s culinary scene is hot!
With its cornucopia of seafood shacks, awardwinning restaurants, microbrewers, cheesemakers and
specialty food artisans of every kind, Maine is attracting
national attention as a culinary destination.
Portland, for example, was recently named “America’s Foodiest Small Town” by Bon Appetit
magazine, further evidence of Maine’s growing reputation as a food destination.
On the casual side, one could try every one

Less traditional takes on Maine’s iconic

Maine’s specialty food scene is
booming with literally thousands of artisanal
products. Stonewall Kitchen’s imaginative
preserves and sauces and Ducktrap River’s
smoked seafood are well known, but so
many more invite happy exploration.
Morse’s Sauerkraut from Waldoboro, Mike’s

Mustards of Eastport, made in the nation’s
only stone-ground mustard mill, have won
more than 40 awards. The state also boasts
more than 20 farms producing about 150
handcrafted cheeses from local cow, sheep
and goat’s milk – tangy chévres , cheddars,
bleus and complex Camembert styles. It’s
all evidence of the many wonderful flavors
of Maine.
Chocolate-making
There is hardly anything on the culinary
front that’s more alluring than chocolate—and
Maine is blessed with a fabulous array of
chocolatiers. From Nutmeg Foods in Portland,
where offerings include tantalizing little nubs
of parmesan coated with cocoa powder, to
Monica’s Chocolates in Lubec, where Monica
makes bon bons in the style of her native Peru,
these imaginative treats will turn anyone into a
choco-connoisseur.
For those who want a multi-layered taste
of Maine, several chocolatiers incorporate
other local products into their creations.
Dean’s Sweets in Portland makes dark
chocolate truffles with Maine-produced Cold
River Vodka, maple syrup, blueberries and
raspberries; Black Dinah Chocolates on Isle
Au Haut offers a “Farm Market” collection
made with ingredients from local farms, such
as rhubarb, berries, apples, mint, pumpkin
and chévre; and Box Hill Confections in
Cumberland makes amazing caramels the
old-fashioned French way, using Maine aldersmoked sea salt.

Maine Cuisine go to:
In addition to Maine’s popular Clam,
Lobster and Seafood summer festivals as
well as nationally renowned food and wine
celebrations, many of our restaurants offer
unique special events once or twice a year.
Hugo’s, in Portland, has an eight-course dinner
in which every course includes Maine potatoes.
At Natalie’s at the Camden Harbour Inn,
Chef Lawrence Klang joins New York Times’
perfume critic, Chandler Burr, for a “Scent
Dinner” highlighting the aromas of the food.
Several establishments stage romantic
“meals in the fields.” Portland’s Cinqueterre
and Vignola have an annual farm dinner in
Greene featuring produce picked just a few
hours earlier. The Cellardoor Vineyard in
Lincolnville also celebrates local food and
wine with a dinner in the vineyards.
Food festivities abound in every region
of Maine. Some of the best chefs of the
Kennebec & Moose River Valleys serve
dinner under the stars in Waterville’s historic
downtown, while musicians serenade the
crowd. Lisbon Falls hosts an annual celebration
of all things Moxie, the “nerve food” that
became Maine’s official soft drink. On Great
Maine Apple Day, farms throughout the state
offer cider-pressing, old-time apple cookery
and tastings of hundreds of rare and heirloom
apples. And in October, foodies flock to
Portland for Harvest on the Harbor, a threeday celebration of culinary creativity and
locally produced foods, wines and spirits.
