Hands-on Skills for
the Team Physician
This educational seminar is presented by physicians from OAA Orthopaedic
Specialists and Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), in conjunction with the
certified athletic trainers from LVHN. The course will use a combination of
lectures, videos and breakout sessions where participants will get a chance to
practice the techniques being taught.
This course is limited to the first 40 registrants.

8:30–9:45 a.m.
Target Audience
Physicians and physician assistants who would like to be involved in providing
sideline coverage for area sporting events, especially football. This course will
give you the tools to be better able to handle emergency situations on-site at
sporting events working together with the entire sports medicine team of
physicians, physician assistants, athletic trainers and coaches.
Objectives
Utilizing “S.M.A.R.T” (Sideline Management Assessment Response Techniques)
developed by the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, this
educational seminar aims to:
• Improve the quality of medical coverage for student athletes
• Increase the confidence and competency of physicians providing care to
athletes
F irst Quarter:
On-field Injury Assessments – Upper and Lower Extremity
Examination of athlete in equipment
Fractures and Dislocations – reduction techniques
Immobilization and splinting techniques

econd Quarter:
On-field Management of Spine-Injured Athlete
Log roll and lift athlete; shoulder pad and helmet
removal
10:30–10:45 a.m. Halftime
10:45–11:30 a.m. T hird Quarter:
Assessment and Management of Head-Injured/Concussed
