Date Date Date_ Date Program On Friday evening,LanceMetz will presentthe RichardsonGlassplate slidesincluding views of someof the highestlift lockseverbuilt on a towpathcanal. Theseglassplateslides were producedin the 20's and 30's by one of our early societypioneers,GeorgeAtwell Richardson.This is a rare presentationof an obsoletemedium valuedfor its high clarity. Following Lance'spresentation,Gordon Perrywill presenthistoricalviews of lock ruins and canalfeaturesas they appeartoday,and therewill be an overview of someof the siteswe will be visitingon Saturday'sexcursion. On Saturdaywe will boardrented15 passenger vansfor a trip to visit lock sites,dam sites, and many additionalpoints of interestalong the Upper Grand sectionof the trhigh Navigation,a slackwaternavigationsystemprimarily designedto bring coal to Philadelphia. At White Haven,we will view the remainsof the uppermostlock and dam in the system. We will then proceedsouthwardand enterthe Lehigh National Corridor trail where we will be escortedby Diane Madl, a memberof the Lehigh Gorge StatePark personnel. Someof the siteswe will be viewing includethe following: o Lock 28- in excellentcondition;with a lift of 22 feet;filling tunnelis visiblethat was designedto reducethe time necessaryto fill lock chamberswith the immensedimensionsof the Lehigh Canal locks. o Lehigh Tannery-view the remainsof Lock 27 which had the highestlift (30 feet!) on the Lehigh Navigationsystem. - view the remainsof a tanneryoperatedby the ThomasSmall Company,at one time the largesttanneryin the country,processing Over 50,000hidesper year! - view the remainsof anothermilling complex devotedto the logging industry. o Locks 25.24.22-massivelocksin excellentcondition! o Mud Run- site of impressivestonearchwayfor the Lrhigh Valley Railroad. o Rockport-the terminusof the Buck Mountain Gravity Railroad;we will seethe rock cut tunnel,anotherfeederof coal to the Lehigh Navigation. o PennHaven Junction& Planes-view the remainsof the steamdriven plains where iron bandswere usedto lower coal cars to the Lehigh Navigation;also the site of the BeaverMeadow RR junction with the Lehigh Navigation and the siteof the only railroadstationaccessible only by rail. o Ox Bow Bend-pipelinebridge. o Glen Onoko o Lock 2 andremainsof railroadturntable. o Additional seldomseencanalartifactswill be shown throughoutthe trip. Upon returningto the hotel,we will meetat Trainer'sInn for the eveningbanquetand program.JohnDrury and MichaelNunnamacher will presenton the SwitchbackRailroad.
