Today the 27 acres have been redeveloped to house an international billionaire’s collection of classic cars in luxurious surroundings. Members and guests of CREW Lehigh Valley were privileged to tour the facility in May and learn about the design and construction of the facility. Keith Flickinger, the curator of the collection of the 155 cars housed on the site, said the Italian owner became enchanted with American cars as a boy when he saw them in Vatican motorcades. Mr. Flickinger, who ran a car restoration business, met the owner when he was engaged to restore and then house some cars. As more cars kept coming to Allentown, a facility was required. The former drive in was acquired, and the large movie screen was retained. Over a series of years, seven large temperaturecontrolled garages and restoration buildings were constructed along with a driving track. Project manager Chris Brown, of Brown Design Group, discussed the design and construction of the centerpiece of the facility, a 24,000 s/f gathering Project Manager Chris Brown Keith Flickinger, Curator space inspired by stone barns in both Lehigh County, PA and Italy. The design team was sent to Tuscany to understand the heritage of the structures. Wood and stone from 200 year-old barns were repurposed in the construction of the building. Capable of hosting 200 at a seated dinner, the building features a commercial kitchen decorated to resemble kitchen facilities in an Italian villa. The glass walls in the main room open onto a patio and overlooks the original drive-in movie screen. The exterior is wired for sound and movies are screened at the owner’s pleasure. Guests may enjoy four apartments in the main building; a mezzanine apartment overlooking a portion of the car collection is reserved for the owner. Buicks constitute a large portion of the collection and all cars are in drive-ready condition. In July the facility will host the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Buick Club of America. n Betsy Storey-Bono Concannon Miller & Co., PC Community Service Jody King CBRE, Inc.
