Charity Weekend
Sudeley 8th & 9th June 2013
Our annual charity weekend of working tests was held on the 8th and 9th of
June in the grounds of Sudeley Castle by kind permission of Lady Ashcombe
and the Dent Brockhurst family and the Charlton Abbots Estate by kind permission of Mr Edwin Bailey. Many thanks to Skinners who once again kindly
sponsored this event. The weather, for once, was kind to us – remaining dry
which I think was a first for this event!
The weekend was well attended and once again proved to be an overall success for the Society and our two nominated two charities – Hearing Dogs for
the Deaf and Charlton Abbots Church Appeal.
The Retriever tests (Puppy, Novice and Intermediate) were held on the Saturday with an award for WGDS members only, ‘Best Novice Handler’. Unfortunately we did not receive any entries for the Junior Handler test. Our
thanks to the judges: Ms Laura Hill, Mr Ben Randall, Mr Richard Sheppard
and Dr Richard Price for giving up their time to come and judge.
Congratulations to all the winners especially to member Jenny Orchard who
was awarded the trophy for Best Novice Handler.
The HPR tests held on the Sunday ran very smoothly and this year the tests
were judged by Mr Lee Loveridge (Puppy), Mr Paul Bradley ( Novice) and
Mr Jim Field (Open). The water test for all three classes was judged by Mr
Steve Smith.
Over the weekend we made a staggering £1000 which was divided between
the two chosen charities.
This was another successfull weekend for the Society and many thanks to
Sudeley Estate and Charlton Abbots Estate for allowing us to run these tests.
Special thanks must go to all the helpers, volunteers and the catering team
who assisted over the weekend and to all those who helped on the Friday
to set up the area. Without your continued support to the Society it would
be impossible to put on such successful events.
Well done and thank you to you all!

HPR Working Test
Sudeley Castle
Judges Comments:‘Puppy’ Judge: Lee Loveridge.
My ‘Test 1’ was a straight forward 30 metre seen retrieve and
most of the puppies completed this with ease, the difference
in scores was down to handlers marking the ‘fall’. ‘Test 2’ Hunting up on a meadow pasture field which had in past few days
sheep had be resident so some puppies were more interested
in droppings during their run!!!, than responding to handler’s
commands, but still pleased with some of the work shown.
‘Test 3’ was to be a little taxing for the puppies as they had to
walk to heel, steadiness plus a retrieve at the end, but a high
standard was shown. Many thanks for WGDS for the invitation to judge and the support given to
me during the day by society members and the atmosphere was great - a good day was had by all.
‘Novice’ Judge Paul Bradley & Mark Spearing.
‘Test 1’ was a seen retrieve along a woodland track adjacent
to cover with a hedgerow on the right, as thrown onto track
by dummy thrower at 40 metres, with the majority completing
well, while others allowed too much leeway for their dogs to
wander off track into cover on the left hand side so needing
more input. ‘Test 3’ - This was to be a blind retrieve into woodland spinney surrounded by fencing to a shot. Here some nice
dog work but again handler allowing too much leeway for their
dogs to hold a straight line and command for the dog to jump over fence to obtain the dummy, so
some homework for several people. Many thanks to WGDS for the invitation and the help and
support given to me by my stewards and dummy thrower and the company of many to make such
an enjoyable day. Paul Bradley.
‘Test 2’ I completed the hunting during the day as having 53 dogs on the day!! With super ground
as all the dogs have ‘fresh’ ground to hunt up, that was undulating at times, and winds did change
but did see some nice dogs over the day. Some handlers need to have a much firmer partnership
with their dog in getting them to get out to cover their ground and respond to commands whether
whistle or verbal. On the whole some nice work on the day. Many thanks to WGDS for the invitation to judge and to my steward who stayed all day [Fiona Wensley] and the support by the society’s members and catering team . Mark Spearing
‘Open’ Judge Jim Field. ‘Test 1& 2’ Hunting up over grassland cover with a seen retrieve at the
end. Here I was to see some nice work by all the dogs getting out well, covering their ground on
both sides. However, when it came to the retrieve, some found
it hard as dogs not always responding to handler’s commands.
‘Test 3’ Blind retrieve with shot, more of the dogs coped well
with the undulating ground/cover on the parkland with some
dogs showing nice style with a good partnership with their handlers. Many thanks for WGDS in giving me the invitation to
judge as had a very enjoyable day with excellent support as
usual from this society that maintain a high standard. Jim Field

Novice AV Retriever Field Trial
Harvington - 20th September 2013
Judges: Mrs Jayne Coley, Mrs Sue Hutton, Mr Nick Coates & Mr Roger Wiggins
We held our novice trial of the season at Byrd’s Retreat, Nr. Evesham, by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Bob
Byrd. The judges were Mrs Jayne Coley, Mrs Sue Hutton, Mr Nick Coates and Mr Roger Wiggins with 8 guns
shooting for the trial. We were blessed with a predominately sunny day with moderate wind conditions.
The trial started with a walked up format with Sue and Roger on the right and Jayne and Nick on the left
judging. The trial walked forward through market garden crops of purple sprouting cabbages and marrow
plants. Several birds were repeatedly getting up at extended distances making the shooting very testing
for the guns. In the early rounds several birds were unable to be picked by the first dog down and upon a
judges search was not picked. The cover of the ground crop was very dense and the dogs that were able to
hold an area and work the scent were to prove the successful dogs on the day with clean efficient retrieving.
Through the first two rounds all dogs were tested in line and with walked up retrieves. We also had several
coveys fly over the line which supplied retrieves behind the line for dogs and several birds were offered to
the adjacent judge pairing to test dogs.
The trial moved on to a duck drive where seven dogs were taken forward for further rounds. A number of
ducks were shot for the trial landing in the lake as well as in the stubble field adjacent. Dogs were tried on
the stubble field first and then onto the water. The retrieves on the water were particularly testing due to
the distance involved in the retrieves and due to the wind pushing the birds further into the lake and around
a small island. Sixty-five birds were shot for the trial and it was remarked that the day was reminiscent of a
true wild bird walked up days shooting.
Upon completion of the trial, the remainder of the shot game was offered to the competitors to pick to
round the day off.
The trial was won by Mr Richard Edwards. Richard was also the guns choice.
Richard Price – Field Trial Secretary.

Novice AV Spaniel Field Trial
Harvington - 10th September 2013
Byrds Retreat, Harvington Evesham Worcestershire.
By kind permission of Bob and Sonia Byrd.
Judges: S Pearsons[A2067] & D Rockall [N\P]
We arrived at the trial ground on a overcast but dry day, to find the ladies of the club cooking breakfast
for everyone which was very welcome. We all enjoyed bacon baps and a cup of coffee. We then started the
trial next to the car park along the side of a lake. The dog under me had a long run in white grass and reeds
having a find on a pheasent but (the gun Ed.) was unable to shoot it. The dog on the left had a nice find on a
pheasent and a good retrieve. The next dog in on the left worked the ground out to the bottom of the lake
and a lot of duck got off but went on the wrong side away from the guns. From here we moved into root
crops on partidges - the wind had got up and the birds were geting up in front of the dogs and making it
hard for the guns to shoot them. Most of the dogs had retrieves, though quite a few had not had flushes.
The dogs that where having finds had to be sent well out to pick the birds. Due to the birds getting up before
the dogs could catch up with them, the guns had to be on the ball to get them down. This was a hard trial
to judge due to the conditions and we tried to give every dog a fair chance to shine as this was a novice trial
and most of the dogs went well and on another day could have been in the awards. The dogs that where in
the awards just had the luck to have flushes and retrieves. I must thank Bob and his keeper because they
worked their socks of to find us the birds. Thanks also to the guns who shot well and made it a great trial.
The guns were Keith Randall, Derek Llloyd, Richard Price, Joun Parkes and Antony Hawkins.
We did the books up and the trial was over so we all went back to cars for the presentations. The ladies had
put on soup and a roll for every one, which was brilliant.
I would like to thank the commitee for asking Dave and I to judge and the ladies of the club for looking after us so well. Also Steve for meeting us the night before the trial. A big thank you to Alex for the smooth
running of the trial and all her hard work, and finally to Bob and his Keepers for a super ground and game
supply.

Harvington - 8th October 2013
Byrds Retreat, Harvington, Evesham Worcestershire
By kind permission of Bob and Sonia Byrd
Judges Comments:Judge: Richard Biggs.
The day started well, with glorious sunshine which was only the start of a good days trialling.
The head of game was excellent, giving all the dogs plenty of opportunity of a flush in great spaniel cover brambles! The guns did their part by shooting well and ensuring an opportunity for a retrieve. The retrieve
of the day was a very nice running cock bird that Jeremy Organs dog took well. This, once the judges put
their books together, set Jeremy just ahead of the other dogs and helped him win the trial on ice. The day
ran smoothly and was a great trial venue with lots of positive feedback being given by the competitors.
Some very good dogs fell by the wayside but all the dogs hunted the cover well and the final places were
very close, showing a good standard of dogs.
