ONE HUNDRED and twenty-one senior
students of the UPIS will be graduating from
high school on Wednesday, April 21, 2010.
Practices for the commencement
exercises were held from April 13-15 at the
UPIS Multipurpose Hall, while the final
rehearsal on April 20 was held at the UP
Film Center.
The baccalaureate ceremonies will be
held in the morning of graduation day. The
ecumenical rites will be held at the UPIS
high school grounds (Multipurpose Hall).
The graduating Batch of 2010 has 33
honor graduates—26 of whom
are
graduating with honors, six with high
honors and one with highest honors. The
class valedictorian, Marion Ivy Coronel (10
Acacia), is graduating with a GWA of 1.167.
She is also an Oblation Scholar and an
IntarMed qualifier.
Mr. Jaime Banjo Aquino took charge of
the graduation practices with help from the
Grade 10 advisers (Prof. Selma Cortes, Ms.
Diane Caluag and Prof. Rox Velasquez) and
In celebration, the Grade 10 PTA of 2010
other members of the graduation will sponsor the Seniors’ Ball for the
committee. Mr. Leujim Martinez guided the graduates on April 22, 2010 at the Grand

UPIS TEACH II Held

The UP Integrated School successfully held a series of seminar workshops entitled Upgrading the Instructional Skills of TEACHers, otherwise
known as UPIS TEACH. Now on its second year, the series of seminar workshops were held for four Saturdays last
January and covered all subject areas
in the elementary level.
This year’s UPIS TEACH had a total
of 117 participants. The largest contingent (19) came from DepEd Malabon
District III followed by Makati Hope
Christian School (17), San Benildo Integrated School (14), and Maria Montessori Foundation (10).
The largest participation was in
the area of CA English with a total of
25 participants while the lowest was in
Music with only four participants. Below is the breakdown by subject area:

The K-10 UPIS awardees of academic excellence and other awards
took center stage as they received
their certificates of recognition amidst
the applause of their fellow students,
teachers, and their proud parents
during the recognition day dubbed as
“Parangal 2010”. The theme for this
year’s recognition day echoes the call
for change ,”Panawagan sa Kabataan,
Pagbabago ng Lipunan.” The awarding
rites for the K-10, 3-6, and the K-2
were held at the Multi-purpose Hall at
different schedules last March 3,4,
and 5 , 2010, respectively .

Peryagham 2010

Last February 16-19, 2010, the
Department of Science held this year’s
Science Fair dubbed Peryagham 2010
at the UPIS elementary and high
school grounds. The objectives of this
activity were to (a) provide an alternative learning environment in science;
(b) evaluate student’s proficiency in
science concepts and process skills; (c)
promote creativity, resourcefulness
and ingenuity of students; (d) increase
awareness of the most recent discoveries in science; and (e) encourage
friendly competition and camaraderie.
The peryagham, coined from the
words
“perya”
(fair)
and
“agham” (science), is a brainchild of
Prof. Rolando Villablanca. It evolved
from a science quiz bee entitled Pautakan sa Agham organized by the Science Department and UPIS Science
Club, and participated by different
schools in Quezon City in 2003. The
quiz bee, according to Prof. Villablanca, was a way to give back to the
community of schools and also an expression of gratitude of the UPIS for
having won for five consecutive years
(hall of famer) a DOST-sponsored science quiz bee. Believing that learning
should not only be confined in the four
corners of the classroom, Prof. Villablanca came up with this year’s theme
“Bridging the gap between formal and
informal science education in UPIS”.
The week-long celebration started
with a kick-off parade around the
block where the College of Education
and UPIS 3-6 buildings are situated.
The students wore headdresses portraying members of Phylum Vertebrata
of the Kingdom Animalia. Grade 3
students featured arthropods, grade 4molluscs, grade 5-echinoderms, and
grade 6-cnidarians. Grades 3 and 4
students were awarded for their “most
spirited participation” since they prepared generously (thanks to the parents) for the costumes. One student
per grade level was chosen for Best in
Costume Award. (Refer to the list of
winners in the different competitions.)
The Science Society, together with
students of Investigative Laboratory (I
6
-lab) sang, danced and performed a
“chemical fireworks exhibition” during
the kick-off program in high school.
Chadwick De Guzman, a grade 10 student, impersonated Kuya Kim Atienza
and told several science trivia.
These were the different events in
the peryagham:
Pautakan sa Agham
This is an intra-level quiz show for
grades 3-10. An elimination round was
held and participated by all students
during science classes. The elimination
round consisted of written test covering topics in science for the past three
quarters of the current year. For
grades 3-6, the top ten scorers competed in the final round. They used
switchboards to show their answers in
lieu of the whiteboards used in previous years. For grades 7-10, top six students from each section were chosen
to compose two teams of three members each. The final competition consisted of three rounds - easy, average
and difficult - for both elementary and
high school category. Clincher questions were given in cases of ties.
Science Exhibit
Science projects for the past and
current school year were displayed at
the concept room and along the science corridors. Models, posters, collages, science toys and other student
outputs were selected for the exhibit.
In grades 3-6, the investigatory projects and the headdresses used during
the parade were exhibited at the Bulwagan and inside the science classrooms.
Interactive Science
Several interactive science activities for grades 3-6 were prepared by
the science student teachers to reinforce what was learned in the classroom. During recess and lunch break,
students, in groups of five, had fun in
doing the said activities.
Science Art:
Dr. Gilbert Yangco and Mr. Ralph
Daryl Cedro, a practical arts and an
arts teacher respectively, were chosen
as the judges of the Sci Art contest.
Students in grades 3-6 made posters
on the topic/theme Conservation.
Grade 3 illustrated conservation of
wildlife, grade 4- the environment,
grade 5-electricity, and grade 6- alternative sources of energy.
Star Lab
The Star lab is a small version of a
planetarium. It is owned by Najja Consultancy,
a group of retired educators whose advocacy is to help improve science education through the
star lab, science journals, and seminar
workshop for teachers. The Star lab is
air-conditioned and dimmed inside
and the students had illusions of the
sky with the moon, the sun, and the
constellations therein. In her reaction
paper, Grade six pupil Darelle Selina
Rivera wrote, “The star lab experience
made me want to look at the shining
stars.”
Science Congress
This is a culminating activity for
all science subjects where students
exhibited, presented, and defended
their investigatory projects before a
panel of judges. Students’ year-long
effort to have original investigations
and/or research and inventions were
given due recognition in this event.
This year’s judges were Mr. Ryan
Noleal, a former faculty member of
the UPIS and Dr. Rosanelia Yangco of
the College of Education
Machine Design and Construction
This is the most exciting event in
the peryagham for high school students where each grade level was assigned a particular science toy to
make. Grade 7 made a rocket out of
PET bottle using the chemical reaction
between vinegar and baking soda to
propel it. Grade 8 designed an egg
glider made of drinking straw and egg
carton tray to carry six pieces of raw
eggs across a steep line. Grade 9 and
10 students constructed a mouse trappowered car and an ornithopter
(birdlike helicopter), respectively.
Science Movie Festival
Movies about the planet Earth
such as “From Pole to Pole”, “Jungles”,
“Saving Species”, etc. were shown on
TV along the science corridors during
lunch breaks and dismissal time. There
were three screenings everyday
throughout the week.
Dog Show
Members of the Philippine Army
K9 Unit were invited to conduct an
exhibition where trained dogs
searched for explosives and rescued a
supposed casualty. This exceptional
ability of dogs to detect and find an
object or person can be traced to the
intense sensitivity of their olfactory
neurons.
HELP Earth
Still part of the HELP Earth
(Harnessing Energy Literacy for Planet
Earth) Campaign and coinciding with
Peryagham 2010, students from
grades 7 – 10 traced their hands on a
piece of paper and wrote there their
commitments on how to help Mother
Earth. Planting trees, conserving water
and electricity were the most suggested ways to help earth. More than
forty names of students were drawn to
win HELP earth armlets and lanyards
donated by the Trans-Asia Company.
Sci Soc Year Ender
The Science Society year end activity was supposed to be held at the
culmination of the peryagham, but
due to conflict of schedule, it was
moved to March 5. Amateur astronomers Leogiver Mañosca and Hernan
Dizon of the Philippine Astronomical
Society (PAS) conducted a lecture on
Celestial Navigation where students
learned to name and locate stars, constellations, planets and other celestial
bodies. They also facilitated the overnight stargazing activity held at the
UPIS quadrangle. With the aid of 4inch refracting and 6-inch Newtonian
telescopes, students and teachers
were amazed at the site of Saturn with
its ring, the moon with its craters and
mountain ranges, the asterisms and
constellations, and other heavenly
bodies and formations.
Peryagham 2010 is another en-
deavor of the Science Department to
make learning more interesting and
meaningful to the students. The department is grateful to all who had
been part of making the event a success.

Cultural Exchange ng UPIS at Ehime University

Noong ika-9 hanggang 13 ng Enero 2010, nagkaroon ng cultural exchange ang U.P.Integrated School at
Ehime University mula sa Japan. Naglayon itong palawigin ang ugnayan at
kamalayan ng kani-kanilang mga
estudyante tungkol sa kultura ng dalawang bansa.
Kaugnay nito’y isang linggong
namalagi sa Unibersidad ang ilang
estudyante at guro ng Ehime University upang mag-obserba at magturo sa
mga mag-aaral ng UPIS. Nagtungo
naman ang tatlong guro ng UPIS sa
Japan upang mag-obserba at magturo
sa mga mag-aaral ng Ehime University,
kabilang sina Prop. Czarina Agcaoili,
Bb. April Daphnie Hiwatig, at Prop.
Yvette Alcazar.

kung saan nakipag-usap at nakipagkaibigan ang mga mag-aaral ng Grado 4
ng bawat paaralan.
Upang mapalawak ang kaalaman
ng mga mag-aaral sa kultura ng dalawang bansa, nagbahaginan sila ng mga
bagay-bagay tungkol sa kultura ng
kanilang bansa. Ang mga mag-aaral ng
UPIS ay nagturo at nagpakitang-gilas sa
pagpapakita ng mga pambansang laro

La Nuit Tres Etoile: Promenade 2010

La nuit tres etoile, French for “a
night of numerous stars”, was the
theme of this year’s Junior and Senior
Promenade. As had been the tradition, the Junior Association , with Ms.
Joanne Manzano as adviser and Joie
Ortega as president, organized the JS
Prom as a tribute to the graduating
students.
The prom was held on February
20 from 5pm to 12 midnight at the
UPIS quadrangle. The JA, with their
ingenuity and hard work, transformed
the quad into a festive garden on that
starry night. A huge lighted JS structure welcomed the participants and
guests. Red carpets were laid on the
stairs and candle-lit lanterns adorned
the pathways to create a romantic
ambiance. The flag pole was converted
into a replica of the Eiffel Tower in
Paris, France. The trees were wrapped
with lights and rose petals were scattered on the ground. Plants, a swing,
and pictures on tarpaulin were put
together to create scenic
photo
booths. White tents shielded the tables and chairs were draped with
white cloth, with fresh flowers as
center piece. Delicious foods and
drinks were served throughout the
night.
The girls were ladylike in their
cocktail dresses or short gowns, while
the boys were gentlemanly in long
sleeves, ties and black coats. In fact,
some received awards for their
“transformation”
that night. Joan
Felonia was given the Metamorphosis
Award, Christian Ferrer and Danah
Banaag were voted Prom Prince and
Princess, and Daniel Lagman and
Patricia Domingo who were crowned
Prom King and Queen.
Chadwick De Guzman and Joan
Felonia made the night lively as hosts.
Several students showcased their talents in singing and playing musical
instruments. Selected junior and senior students participated in the Cotillion and the symbolic turn-over ceremony. An invited Quartet from the
College of Music performed beautiful
love songs for more than an hour.
Near the end of the program, a collection of pictures and videos of the
graduating batch was shown on screen
as part of the juniors’ tribute.
Ninety-eight percent (98%) of the
total grades 9 and 10 students attended the event. Based on a survey
conducted by the JA to evaluate the
prom, the students in general were
happy with the outcome and particularly impressed with the new look of
the quadrangle. Administrators, faculty, some parents and students
agreed that the succeeding proms
should be held at the UPIS with a challenge for each organizing batch to do a
make over of the school grounds.
Better choice of playlist and different
sequencing of parts of the program
were some of the improvements suggested. JA officers were appreciative
of the assistance given by their parents, teachers, alumni, batch mates
and friends.
The Junior Association (JA) 2010
provided an memorable experience for
both the seniors and the juniors despite the challenges of finding an affordable venue, the inflation in prices
of food and materials, and the difficulty in collecting payments and convincing students and parents that UPIS
quadrangle could be the perfect
venue. More importantly, the Association was truly successful in bringing back the tradition of holding the JS
Prom on the UPIS grounds.

ang makadaupang palad ang mga gurong tunay na nagbabahagi ng kanilang
puso at talino sa paghubog sa mga pag
-asa at iskolar ng bayan. Isang karangalan sa UP Integrated School na
magkaroon ng mga gurong nagdedicate ng panahon at sakripisyo sa pagtuturo.

“Dahil sa UPIS, nararamdaman
kong kumpleto ang aking pagkatao,”
ang sambit ni Dr. Resuma sa 45 taong
pagtuturo niya sa UP.
Sa edad na 20 nagsimulang
magturo si Dr. Resuma mula una hanggang ikaanim na baitang sa UP Elementary School na nang kalaunan ay naging UPIS. Dito niya naranasang
magturo ng lahat ng aralin lalo na ang
Filipino, Reading, at Language. Dahil sa
kanyang galing ay nakapagturo rin siya
ng mga kurso sa Filipino sa undergraduate at Ph.D. sa Kolehiyo ng Edukasyon at Kolehiyo ng Artes at Literatura.
Sa tagal ng kanyang pagtuturo,
napakaraming karanasan ang hindi
niya malilimutan. Isa na rito ang masasayang klase tulad ng CA Filipino at ang
kanyang mga mapanuri at malikhaing
mga estudyante na nagbigay sa kanya
ng inspirasyong lalong pagbutihin ang
pagtuturo. Hindi rin niya malilimutan

Mimi, ang karanasang hindi niya malilimutan ay ang pagtatanghal ng Kaharian ng Araw na sinulat ni Onofre
Pagsanjan. Dito ipinamalas ng lahat ng
mag-aaral ng K-2 ang kanilang talento
at galing sa wikang Filipino.
Para sa kanya, ang UPIS ang nagbigay daan upang lalo niyang mahalin
ang pagtuturo at ang pagiging isang
Pilipino. At dahil sa kanyang mga
estudyante, natutunan niyang maging
mas maunawain at matiyaga.
Sa kanyang pagretiro, pagpapahinga, pagpapaganda ng kanyang
hardin at higit sa lahat, pag-aalaga ng
kanyang pinakakamamahal na apo ang
aatupagin.
Sa huli, kanyang sinabi na kahit
siya ay sumakabilang buhay na,
pagiging guro pa rin ang kanyang pipiliing gawin sa langit.

Teacher Mimi
Disiplina sa sarili. Ito ang isa sa
mga mahahalagang katangiang ninais
ni Teacher Mimi na matutunan ng kanyang mga estudyante sa 46 na taong
niyang pagtuturo.
Siya ay nagsimulang magturo sa
edad na 17 kung saan naturuan niya
nang buong pagtitiyaga ang mga bata
sa kinder at unang baitang. Una siyang
nagturo sa Barrio School, Batangas sa
loob ng 12 taon bago lumipat sa UPIS
at nagturo ng 34 na taon. Paborito
niyang ituro ang pagsulat at ang pagpapahalaga dito. Ayon kay Teacher
Isang mahalagang bagay para kay
T. Lulu ang pagkilala sa pagkakaiba ng
bawat estudyante. “Bawat bata, ibaiba,” sabi nga niya. Kaya’t sa 43 taon
ng pagtuturo ni T. Lulu, isang malaking
hamon sa kanya ang paghubog sa mga
bata hindi lamang sa apat na dingding
ng paaralan kundi pati na rin ang
kanilang pag-uugali.
Natapos ni T. Lulu ng Batsiler sa
Agham ng Edukasyong PangElementarya sa Kolehiyo ng Edukasyon
sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas Diliman.
Una siyang nagturo sa Stella Maris
College bago lumipat sa UPIS. Nagturo
guro natin.
Nagtapos si Ma’am Cortes ng elementarya at sekondarya sa UP Elementary School, at nagtapos ng Batsilyer sa
Ekonomikang Pantahanan (Home Economics) sa Philippine Women’s University. Sa gulang na 26, nagsimulang
magturo si Ma’am Cortes. Sa 39 na
taon niyang pagtuturo ng Sining Praktika at Sining Edukasyon ay naikot na
niya mula kinder hanggang graduate
school. Isa sa kanyang mga ipinagmamalaking gawain noon ay ang pagpapalit ng art works ng mga bata tuwing Lunes. Aniya, “Nakakatulong ito
upang ma-boost ang confidence ng
mga bata.”
Bilang isang guro, isa sa mga karanasang hindi niya makalilimutan ay

ang pagbalik ng mga dating estudyante
Disiplina at responsibilidad. Dito niya na ngayon ay mga propesyonal na
kilala si Ma’am Selma Cortes. Si Ma’am sa kanilang sari-sariling karera. Sabi
Cortes ay isa sa mga “home-grown” na niya, “Inspirasyon ang naibibigay
si T. Lulu ng mga bata sa grado 1 at 2.
Maraming natutunan si T Lulu sa
pagtuturo. Ilan dito ay ang pagiging
matiyaga at halaga ng pakikisama. Sa
kanyang pagtuturo, isang karanasang
hindi niya makakalimutan ay ang pagtatanghal ng Kaharian ng Araw. Napakaraming sakripisyo ang ginawa
upang maitanghal ito, at ayon nga sa
kanya, “very much worth it” ang mga
ito.
Inihahalintulad ni T Lulu ang kanyang sarili sa isang clay potter. Ayon sa
kanya, “Bawat guro ay humuhubog ng
bata.” At kung ano man ang kalalabasan nito ay bahagi nito ang isang
guro.

naging bahagi na ng ating buhay sa
UPIS, magsisisilbi silang inspirasyon sa
iba pang mga guro at magiging guro
upang magpatuloy sa paghubog ng
mga pangarap at pagkatao ng mga
mag-aaral. Sa inyong lahat, isang mula

BP Camp 2010

Dumalo ang UPIS scouts sa nakaraang Baden Powell Camp noong
ika-19 hanggang 21 ng Pebrero, 2010
sa Balara Filters, Brgy. Pansol, Lungsod ng Quezon. Ang pagdiriwang ay
isinagawa bilang pag-alala sa anibersaryo ng kapanganakan ni Lord Baden
Powell na siyang nagtatag ng scouting
sa buong mundo. Layunin ng BP Camp
na patatagin ang samahan ng scouting
at magunita ang naging buhay ni Lord
Baden Powell. Dumalo ang iba’t ibang
paaralan mula sa limang distrito ng
lungsod Quezon, kasama na ang UPIS.
Nahati-hati sa tatlong subcamps
ang Quezon City Council. Bilang bahagi ng ikalawang distrito, ang scouts
ng UPIS ay kabilang sa Brownsea Island Subcamp. Ang Brownsea Island
ang unang lugar kung saan nagcamping si Baden Powell.
Kasama sa subcamp na ito ang
scouts mula sa ibang paaaralan sa
ikalawang distrito gaya ng Ramon
Magsasaysay National High School

Dito nagkaroon ng pagkakataong magkasama ang Senior at Junior scouts ng
UPIS dahil pareho ang kanilang campsite. Tinuruan ng senior scouts ng basic commands at drills ang mga junior
scout ng UPIS. Nagkaroon din sila ng
pagkakataong magtulungan para sa
pagbuo ng scout yell, hindi lang para
sa UPIS kundi para sa buong subcamp. Mahusay ang nabuong scout
yell ng UPIS scouts na naging dahilan
ng pagkakamit nila ang unang gantimpala sa scout yell.
Nagkaroon ng iba’t ibang gawain
ang lahat ng scouts at nabigyan sila ng
pagkakataong matuto ng iba-ibang
kasanayan tulad ng survival basic life
saving skills, paggamit ng HAM [High
Amplified Modulation] radio, Treasure
Hunt, at iba pa. Nagkaroon din ng advancement ang senior scouts samantalang nakakuha ng badges ang junior
boy scouts na maaari nilang magamit
para sa kanilang advancement.
Sa Browsea Island Subcamp, nagsagawa ng subcamp campfire at skill-o
- rama. Nakuha ng UPIS ang Best
Campsite (Senior Scouts), First Place sa
Yell Presentation, 2nd Place sa Special
Show Presentation, at 3rd Place sa
Song Presentation.
Sa pagtatapos ng BP Camp 2010,
ang Brownsea Island Subcamp ang
itinanghal na Biggest Delegation. Nagkamit din sila ng unang gantimpala sa
Scout Song, Skit at Yell presentation.
Bilang kontribusyon ng UPIS scouts,
ang scout song at scout yell na ito ay
kinanta ng buong Brownsea Island
Subcamp sa Grand Campfire na ginanap noong gabi ng ika-20 ng Pebrero. Kaugnay nito’y kahanga-hanga
ang ipinamalas nina David de Layola
(Grado 4) sa pagbuo ng yell, at ni
Lance Jericho Reblando (Grado 6) sa
pag-awit niya ng scout song.

Father-and-Son-Camping

Isa sa pinakaaabangang gawain ng
KAB Scouts taun-taon ay ang Fatherand-Son-Camp kung saan nabibigyan
ng pagkakataon na magkasama ang
mga tatay at ang kanilang mga anak sa
loob ng tatlong araw. Layunin nito na
pagtibayin ang samahan ng mag-ama
sa pamamagitan ng iba’t-ibang mga
gawain na sabay nilang gagawin.
Naganap ang nasabing kamping
noong Enero 29-31, 2010 sa Adventure
Resort sa Norzagaray, Bulacan. Apatnaput limang KAB Scouts at 39 na tatay
at “tatay-tatayan” ang dumalo. Samasamang nagsaya at nag-bonding ang
mga tatay at mga KAB Scouts sa paggawa at pagpapalipad ng saranggola,
water fun, campfire, at Father and Son
alone.
Minsan lamang maging bata ang
KAB Scouts - mahalagang maging bahagi ng kanilang paglaki ang suporta at
pagmamahal ng kanilang mga magulang. Ang Father-and-Son Camp ay
isang gawain upang maipakita ang suportang ito. Tunay ngang isang kaabang-abang na pangyayari ito hindi
lamang sa mga KABs kundi pati na rin
sa kanilang mga tatay.
Boy Scout Annual Camp, Ginanap

Ika- 29 ng Enero nang tumulak
ang 50 na Boy Scouts, kasama ang
kanilang anim na Troop leaders,
patungong Mendoza Picnic Place, Cabcab, Sitio Boso-Boso, Brgy. San Jose,
Antipolo upang doon ganapin ang
taunang camp.
Sa unang araw, nagkaroon ng pagkakataon ang mga scout na matuto
mula sa mga kinatawan ng BSP Rizal
Council na gawin ang semaphore at
compass reading sa practical na
pamamaraan . Pinaalalahanan rin sila
na maging disiplinado at maayos sa
lahat ng pagkakataon. Bago tuluyang
lumubog ang araw, hinarap ng mga
scout ang unang hamon sa paghahiking sa isang makitid na daan pataas
ng bundok. Ngunit mas marami sa
kanila ang nahirapan dahil sa layo at
baku-bakong daan pababa sa bundok.
Dinaanan din nila ang malalaking batong humaharang sa isang maliit na
sapa. Inabot ng mahigit isang oras
ang hiking ngunit napagtagumpayan
naman itong mga scout. Bago matapos ang unang araw, sinubok pa ng
boy leaders ang kaalaman ng mga nakababatang scout sa pagdi-decode ng
signal na mula sa ilaw ng flashlight
gay San Jose kung saan 64 na pasyente
ang pinagkalooban ng libreng bunot,
toothbrush, at toothpaste. Ito ang
unang pagkakataon na nagkaroon ng
community service activity ang mga
scout sa kanilang annual camp.
Sa kabuuan ay naging matagumpay ang taunang camp, salamat sa

Naglalayon itong lalong mahubog sa
mga scout ang scouting at survival
skills na magagamit nila hindi lamang
sa panahon ng pag-aaral kundi pati na
sa kanilang buhay sa labas ng paaralan.
Makakakuha rin ang mga scout ng mga
natatanging badge kaugnay ng mga
nakahandang gawain.
Naiiba ang camping na ito sapagkat limitado lamang ang dalang mga
kagamitan at pagkain ng bawat senior
scout, kabilang ang tatlong de lata at
kalahating kilong bigas, bagamat naging sagana naman ang campsite sa
mga gulay at prutas na puwedeng
kainin ng mga scout sa buong panahon ng camp. Tampok sa naturang
camp ang pagluluto sa buho ng
kawayan, paggawa ng improvised shelter buhat sa dahon ng saging o niyog,

Paghahanda at unang araw
Ika-9:00 pa lamang ng gabi, Pebrero 11, nagkaroon na ng overnight
vigil sa UPIS Multi Purpose Hall upang
magkaroon ng oryentation tungkol sa
survival camp. Dalawang trainor buhat
sa Makati Council ang naging tagapag14
salita tungkol sa mga dapat at di dapat
gawin sa camp.
Ganap na ika-5:00 ng umaga nang
tumulak ang grupo, kasama ang scout
leaders na sina G. Banjo Aquino, G.
Ralph Cedro, at G. Mike dela Cerna
patungo sa Bataan. Nang marating ang
campsite, inayos agad ng mga scout
ang perimeter para sa kanilang kampo.
Binigyan sila ng panayam ng isang
katutubo tungkol sa pagluluto sa tulong ng buho ng kawayan at pagpapaapoy na hindi gumagamit ng panindi. Matapos nito’y pinagluto na sila
ng pagkain gamit ang kawayan. Binigyan rin sila ng buhay na manok upang
iulam o gawing tinola. Natapos ang
unang araw sa pamamagitan ng night
navigation at sa isang inspirational
lecture tungkol sa Ugnayan ng Diyos sa
tao at kalikasan.

paaralan.

Pinaghanda ang grupo upang ang “We Survived!”

Binigyan rin sila ng gawain para sa isasagawang campfire: bubuo ang bawat
pangkat ng kani-kanilang song, yell, at
skit.
Matapos maidaos ang campfire,
pinatulog na ang mga scout at binigyan
ng mahigpit na bilin: iiwanan daw sila
ng mga trainor sa campsite. [Lingid sa
kaalaman ng mga scout, ito ang huling
pagsubok na kanilang haharapin upang
ma-survive ang naturang camp]. Ganap na ika-4:00 ng umaga ng Pebrero
14, tahimik na ginising ang mga scout
at sinabing may mga NPA sa lugar [sa
Balitang UPISSCA at Sangguniang Pangwika

Muling nagsanib ang mga miyembro ng UPIS Student Catholic Action
(UPISSCA) at Sangguniang Pangwika
(SP) ng grado 7-10 sa pagsasagawa ng
dalawang mahahalagang gawain sa
ikalawang semester ng AY2009-2010.
Camping with Jesus
Noong Disyembre13-14, 2009,
idinaos ng dalawang organisasyon sa
UPIS compound ang taunang
“Camping with Jesus” na nagsilbi na
ring kakaibang advent retreat sa temang “Si Bro ang Pag-asa”. Sinimulan
ang unang araw sa masiglang pagtalakay ni Fr. Serge Maniba ng Parish of
the Holy Sacrifice ng paksang “Sino si
Bro sa Iyo?” na sinundan ng pagdaraos
ng Banal na Misa. Ala una ng hapon
nang buong kasiyahang isagawa ang
Amazing Race na pinamahalaan ng
ilang miyembro ng UP Catholic Action
(UPSCA), ang katumbas na organisasyong pangkolehiyo ng UPISSCA. Lubha
namang na-inspire “sumulat kay Bro”
ang mga kalahok matapos nilang
marinig magsalita Sir Mike dela Cerna
tungkol sa paksang “Hapag ng Pagasa”. Nagtapos ang unang araw sa
pagdaraos ng isang campfire kung
saan ipinamalas ng mga kalahok ang
kanilang talento sa pagkanta at pagarte.
Halos hindi na natulog ang
marami sa 65 kalahok ngunit maaga pa
ring nagising ang lahat para sa isang
penitential walk. Nakatapak silang
naglakad sa paligid ng UP academic
oval habang nagdarasal ng Banal na
Santo Rosaryo. Ikasampu na ng umaga
nang matapos ang mga panghuling
gawain, ngunit pagod man at puyat,
mahahalatang hindi agad malilimutan
Marso 13, 2010 nang isinagawa ng
58 miyembro ng UPISSCA at Sangguniang Pangwika (7-10) ang isa pang
taunang gawain – ang pagdalaw sa
mga batang ulila at abandoned. Sa
taong ito, dinalaw nila ang ampunan
ng Bethany House sa Marilao, Bulacan
na may 65 batang ampon. May dala
silang mga laruan, pagkain, aklat at iba
pang school supplies na donasyon ng
mga estudyante at guro ng UPIS. Kabilang sa mga naging gawain ng grupo
ang isahang “pag-aalaga” at pagpapakain sa mga bata. Idinaos din ang
isang masayang programa na mismong ang mga batang ampon ang nagpakita ng kanilang kakayahan sa pagsayaw.
Sa kanilang pag-uwi, dumaan ang
grupo sa Divine Mercy National Shrine
na nasa Marilao, Bulacan din. Kakaiba
ring karanasan ang kanilang nakaharap
sapagkat sa unang pagkakataon para
sa nakararaming kalahok, nagsagawa
sila ng Stations of the Cross sa malawak na compound ng national shrine.
Inaasahan ng mga tagapayo ng
UPISSCA at SP na sina Prop. Vilma M.
Resuma at Prop. Mike dela la Cerna na
naging makahulugan, mabunga at
tunay na kasiya-siya ang dalawang
taunang gawaing ito para sa mga miyembro ng dalawang oranisasyon.

UPIS Track and Field: Kampeon sa 72nd UAAP!

Sa unang pagkakataon, nakamit
ng UPIS ang kampeonato sa track and
field sa 72nd UAAP season na ginanap
noong Pebrero 4-7, 2010 sa Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Nakipagtagisan ng bilis at lakas
ang UPIS track and field team sa mga
atleta mula sa iba’t ibang unibersidad,
kabilang ang University of Santo
Tomas (UST), Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), De La Salle Zobel
(DLSZ), Adamson University (AdU), at
University of the East (UE).
Pinangunahan ng koponan ng
UPIS ang middle at long distance
events. Sila’y matinding nakipaglaban
sa mga manlalaro ng Ateneo at UST sa
jumps at throwing events at nakalamang ng anim na puntos sa mga
naturang dating kampeon. Sa pagtatapos ng apat na araw na kompetisyon,
itinanghal bilang kampeon sa unang
pagkakataon ang UPIS track and field
team. Pumangalawa ang ADMU at

Two UPIS athletes delivered stellar
performances in the recently concluded Palarong Pambansa held on
April 11-17, 2010 in San Jose, Tarlac.
Their combined total harvest of three
golds, one silver, and three bronze
medals greatly contributed to NCR’s
winning the Palaro over-all championship crown.
Runner Jaime Immanuel “Jimboy”
D. Mejia, an incoming grade 7 student,
delivered UPIS Track and Field’s first
ever Palaro gold medal in the 110 meter hurdles. He also won three bronze
medals in the 100 meter dash, 200
meter dash, and, together with his

Veteran Palaro swimmer Jodie
Danielle P. De Leon, who is already
graduating this schoolyear, won the
gold medal in her favorite 200 meter

the silver medal in the 400 meter medley relay, in the secondary girls division.
