The popular contemporary worship song "I Stand in Awe of You” was written by
Mark Altrogge in 1987. Around that time, he was reading R.C. Sproul’s “The
Holiness of God” and A.W. Tozer’s “The Knowledge of the Holy” to gain some
insight into the essence of a holy invisible God.

No one can see God. And in many ways, if not for Jesus, He is truly unknowable.
For the rational, scientific, experiential observer, to describe -- even worship -- a
Divine Being whom we admit is beyond human comprehension seemingly borders
on the impossible. But that is exactly what we proclaim when we sing Altrogge’s
composition.
The music employs a string of words not often found in songs. Phrases like
‘beautiful beyond description,' ‘too marvelous for words,' and ‘too wonderful for
comprehension’ -- these, while possessing an elegant poetry to them, are all
directly pointing toward God. Such words are so unusual that people singing them
do not just slip into mindlessly going through the motions of uttering them; rather,
they become aware at all times that they are fervently worshipping the God whom
the song describes as "beyond description."

Having articulated those things, the songwriter then asks questions: "Who can
grasp Your infinite wisdom? Who can fathom the depth of Your love?" This proves
to be a great device because such questions actually point our spirits to the
infinite and eternal nature of our beautiful, wonderful, incomparable God, thus
leaving us with a sense of open-ended wonder. The song then bursts into the
chorus ‘I stand, I stand in awe of You!’ Written out in prose, it logically concludes
something like "Having said all these, I’m left stunned at the thought of such a God
and can do nothing but stand and marvel in amazement of Him!"

This great worship song is the main theme of the Easter cantata entitled "I STAND
IN AWE" by David Clydesdale, to be presented by the Greenhills Christian
Fellowship-East Chancel Choir, led by music director and conductor Lex S. Reyes,
on Palm Sunday, 20 March 2016, at the 8:30am and 11:00am worship services.
The cantata has a strong evangelistic message, so bring your loved ones and
friends who have yet to hear the saving knowledge of the death and resurrection
of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord who is "beautiful beyond description, Majesty
enthroned above!"
Come and together let us worship Him!
