CHICK•LIT
A comedy movie tale of saving a village pub ..... with saucy writing
A comedy movie shot in north Norfolk, telling how pub regulars pen an erotic novel to save their village inn, is set to be released at cinemas
nationwide.
And Chick Lit’s writer and director Tony Britten, who lives in the area, will host a question and answer session after a special screening at
Sheringham Little Theatre on 6th September.
The film charts how domino-playing pub-goers, including the editor of the local newspaper, set about raising funds to save the closure-threatened
watering hole, by trying their hands at writing a Fifty Shades of Grey style ‘mummy porn’ novel.
The Hunny Bell pub at Hunworth, and the EDP and North Norfolk news office at Cromer feature in scenes, along with Holt Bookshop,
Gresham’s School, Blakeney, Morston, the Muckleburgh
Collection at Weybourne and a Fakenham solicitors’ office.
The lead male role of paper editor David is played by Christian
McKay, who was Lord Hesketh in the motor racing film Rush,
with Caroline Catz, the long-suffering wife of Doc Martin,
playing his wife Jen.
The cast also includes comedian and actor Miles Jupp, with
cameo roles from Norfolk-based acting legend Sir John Hurt
and Dame Eileen Atkins as a pair of ‘dodgy’ literary agents.
Chick Lit goes on general release in the first week in September.
Sheringham Little Theatre, which previously hosted a preview
screening for cast members and guests, has showings at 2.30pm
and 7.30pm on Tuesday 6th September.
Mr Britten, from Holt-based Capriol films, which also made ‘In Love with
Alma Cogan’ based on Cromer Pier, will talk with the audience after the
evening screening.
He hatched the Chick Lit idea while visiting younger son Oliver in Los
Angeles back in 2011, during a chat about whether a team effort might get
around the ‘solitary exercise’ of writing a novel. It led to an idea about the team
being pub dominoes players, with Mr Britten being one in real life.
Ollie wrote the initial script and Mr Britten was able to put together a ‘dream
cast’, which also includes Niamh Cusack and Cathy Tyson.
He said: “What we have produced I firmly believe is funny, witty, charming and above all entertaining. It is set in a world I know about because I
believe that the best stories originate from one’s own experience.”
To book tickets and for more information call Sheringham Little Theatre on 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

THE HOLT OWL TRAIL
The Holt Owl Trail is an initiative currently being developed by a sub-committee of Holt Town Council with representation from Norfolk
County Council, North Norfolk District Council, The Holt Society and Holt Chamber of Trade. A slide presentation detailing the aims, ambitions
and costs of the project was given to Councillors during their 11th July 2016 meeting at Holt Community Centre where it was unanimously
approved that the sub-committee should proceed to the next stage.
The proposal is to provide 24 flush-mounted, 12 inch circular bronze pavement
plaques to guide visitors on a circular tour of Holt town centre incorporating
the Market Place, White Lion Street, Bull Street, Shirehall Plain and the High
Street. It is envisaged that an accompanying booklet will support the trail
providing details of the historical references, heritage and points of interest
along the route intermixed with anecdotal notes. Leading off the main trail
visitors will be made aware of links to discover some of the concealed areas
of the town including St. Andrews Church and all the locations of the Yards in
Holt.
To compliment and promote the Owl Trail to visitors arriving in Holt,
noticeboards will be provided in the car parks and other prominent locations
with QR codes enabling the trail to be followed by electronic devices. Suitable
for all age groups, it will not matter where you join the Holt Owl Trail for the
plaques will be individually numbered, spaced at relatively equal distances and
each will bear a brief description of its location.
The concept of a Trail in Holt was devised by Deputy Mayor Michael
Hill following a stay in Dijon, France. It was there that he discovered ‘La
Chouette’, a 22-stage ‘Owl Trail’ which has not only earned a Certificate of
Excellence by TripAdvisor but is ranked as No. 1 of the 63 listed things to
do in Dijon. Town and City trails can now be found all around the world and
prove extremely popular as a quick and easy reference without the need for
detailed research or the expense of hiring a guide.

It is hoped that the Holt Owl Trail booklets will be readily available from
Custance Court in the Market Place. One of the prototype

THEATRE PANNING FOR GOLD IN SEARCH
FOR LOST BOYS ACTORS
The search is on for some Lost Boys to join a Norfolk pantomime cast.
Sheringham Little Theatre is staging Peter Pan later in the year, but has launched a summer appeal to find his pals. At least a dozen Lost Boys are
needed, as well as four youngsters to take the speaking parts of John and Michael, Wendy’s brothers who join the magical journey.
Theatre director Debbie Thompson said the panto provided opportunities for youngsters to join the professional cast and gain experience.
“We normally get lots to auditions but can only take a few. However, this year there are many more opportunities, which we are thrilled about
because we like to get the community involved,” she added.
One youngster who has reaped the benefits of getting involved in youth drama productions is 12-year-old Joe Oxtoby (below) from Bacton.
He made his debut as a ‘village person’ in the Jack and the Beanstalk panto in 2012, aged just eight, after his mum , District Council Chief
Executive Sheila, persuaded him to have a go rather than be bored in the holidays.
Joe admitted: “I didn’t really want to go, but it was great, I learned so much and I loved it.”
He has since played a range of roles from other chorus parts and a panto dwarf, to the lead in
Oliver at Cromer pier with the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society and
the title role in Joseph and his Technicolor Dreamcoat at his school, Gresham’s prep in Holt.
“Being involved in the theatre has really boosted my confidence, given me life skills and I
have made a lot of friends,” said Joe. He has also gone on to win coveted summer school
places with the National Youth Music Theatre and the National Youth Choir.
Joe’s ambition is to be a commercial airline pilot, with the stage as a hobby in the wings. And
he urged any boys thinking about taking part in drama sessions to have a go. If they thought
acting was not a suitable thing for boys to do, they should look at ‘cool’ male actors like
Photograph: Richard Batson
Johnny Depp and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
Mum Sheila said there was a lot of commitment needed, from youngsters and parents, when boys and girls got involved in drama productions,
but the Little Theatre gave a lot of support including providing chaperones and help finding lift shares. “The children get so much out of it that
it’s worth it,” she added.
Youngsters keen to be among Pan’s panto Lost Boys should be aged eight to 16 and should enjoy acting and singing, though no experience is
necessary. The part of John is aged about 12 and Michael six to eight.
Girls have not been left out. There is also a need to find a Tiger Lily, aged about 16, who is a strong singer as well as a good actress.
Peter Pan runs from 7th December to 1st January and sees the ‘boy who never grows up’ helping Wendy and her brothers fly to London, via
Norfolk, encountering pirate Captain Hook and two troublesome crocs Tick and Tock along the way.
Cast members need to be available from October. Auditions are on 18th September at 10.00am at the Theatre. Hopefuls need to come dressed to
move and with a song prepared. They will be taught a short dance routine and given a piece to read. There is no need to register in advance.

CHRIS MARCH AND
BREXIT
Dear Caroline,
Contrary to Chris March’s belief, I don’t
‘gush’, enjoy ‘sour grapes’ or entertain any
sado-masochistic pleasure by watching our
country ‘go down the pan’, as he writes in
Issue 356.
However, in common with the 48.1% of
people who voted to remain in the EU,
I confess to being deeply saddened and
disappointed by the decision and nothing
that has happened ‘post-Brexit’, politically
or economically, has persuaded me to change
my mind. Nevertheless a pragmatic and
level-headed approach is called for and we
must accept, with good grace: ‘Brexit means
Brexit’.
It might be easier to become reconciled to
the decision had an exit plan existed, relating
to which I was intrigued to read in a current
article in The Telegraph by Christopher
Booker (respected journalist and staunch
critic of the EU) that he shares this concern.
He accuses leading Brexiteers, Boris Johnson
& Co, of being ‘clueless’ and ‘woefully
ignorant of the technical complexities
involved in any process of leaving the EU’.
He urges Theresa May ‘to take a firm grip’
on what her ministers are doing by insisting
they go for ‘the simple option of remaining
in the European Economic Area (EEA)’ or
face the ‘ultimate disaster of the timetable
for negotiations running out’. This would
mean, he explains, ‘not just dropping out of
the EU without a settlement but also out of
its Customs Code, on which all our current
trading procedures depend’. He ends with a
stark warning that ‘overnight we could end
up without having any system of law allowing
us to trade, not just with the EU, but with
anyone else’. The stakes could not be higher.
As for celebrating, Chris, I intend to wait
until these crucial Brexit negotiations have
been concluded and only then, if a favourable
outcome for our country is reached.
The jury is still out on that.
Yours sincerely,
John Wharfe
BREXIT
Dear Caroline,
It was interesting to read the rather
triumphant UKIP letter from Mr March and
the opposing views expressed by Mr North
and Simms. But Brexit means Brexit and the
UK has now chosen the bed on which it must
lie. Economic reality will not become clear
for some considerable time but Mr March
does seem to be somewhat unaware of what is
already happening around him.
Our economy is already slowing, with the
possibility of a full recession by year end.
The Building and Construction sectors
are already in recession, with Finance and
Services close behind. The £/$ exchange
rate is now at its lowest point since 1985,
with the corresponding increases in costs
of imports about to hit our economy and
industry a further blow. The PMI, as perhaps
the best indicator of confidence in our
industries, is already in sharp decline; and
because of all the uncertainty arising from
what Brexit really means much inward
investment has been put on hold, with several
major industries such a car manufacturing
threatening to leave the UK for Europe. And
to cap it all we now have to create a very
large and very expensive ‘expert’ government
bureaucracy to effect our exit from Europe.
Clearly no free UKIP money for the NHS
One could go on, but UKIP and their partners
do not believe in ‘experts’. Still Brexit is
Brexit and we are where we are. However,
I do remember when working in the FSU
shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union
in 1993, a senior Soviet politician told me
that there was a very serious flaw in our
Western Democracy, “It allows people to say
what they think without thinking”.
There proved to be no plan in place for
Brexit, so it was unclear what we were
actually being asked to vote for.
I fear that once more my Soviet colleague is
proven right.
Yours sincerely,
Terry Adams
BREXIT
Dear Caroline,
In response to the letter from Peter North
in issue 357, I do not criticise him for
disagreeing with the content of my letter
from issue 356 (I still stand by every word)
however, I do object to his conclusions about
the book I recommended.
‘The Great Deception’ by Christopher
Booker and Richard North is meticulously
researched and every piece of information
within it is referenced by direct quotes from
other sources or from documentation held in
the EU’s own archives. To dismiss the book
as depicting the EU as a ‘Franco-German
conspiracy theory’ is not only incorrect but
an insult to the authors. Anyone interested
enough to read it with an open mind would
not come to that conclusion. I can only
assume that as Peter found it so boring he fell
asleep before reading it in full.
I have never read a book about UFOs or
aliens but as Peter seems to be an authority on
email: [email protected]
10
these subjects perhaps he could recommend
some lighter reading.
Yours sincerely,
Chris March
MISSING DOG
Dear Caroline,
I have recently adopted a little Spanish dog
who was desperately in need of a ‘Forever
Home’ after being found on the streets in
Spain while caring for four puppies. They
were taken to a shelter there before being
rescued and then brought over to England.
I was fortunate enough to be at the vet’s in
Holt on Referendum day when I saw this
little dog who had just had an operation on
her foot, I heard her foster carer say that, “all
I need to do now is to find her a home”, so
that’s how it all started. Unsurprisingly Cally
(previously Callita in Spain) is a very timid
little girl, afraid of everyone and everything
after her previous experiences. She has
improved a lot in the two weeks I have had
her but still has a long way to go.
On Friday 29th July, a friend unthinkingly
left my back gate open and called to me in a
loud voice which startled her. She shot out of
the gate and although I called and searched
for her she was missing for a long 36 hours.
I caught her at midnight on Saturday, she
was running past my house. I called and
thankfully she responded immediately.
I would just like to thank all the wonderful
people in the neighbourhood for all their help
and caring in finding her and also say ‘thank
you’ to North Norfolk radio for their help.
Your sincerely,
Geraldine Nurse
HEARING AID
BATTERIES
Dear Caroline,
When I went up to Holt surgery last May to
get some batteries for my hearing aids I was
told that they no longer stock them.
As few people seem to be aware of this I
thought a letter in the Chronicle would be
helpful.
The current way to get batteries, which are
still free, is either to make an appointment
at the Cromer Hospital, to go in person
to the N&N or to attend the Norfolk Deaf
Association Hearing Support Mobile Clinic
where one is given a year’s supply.
That’s not as bad as it sounds as it is only
two small boxes. The mobile clinic comes to
Holt Railway Station car park from 10.00am
- 12.00noon on one of the following dates:
Friday 2nd September or 4th November.
There are other places where one can go but
the list is too long to put down here.

CHURCH DOCTRINES
Dear Caroline,
Michael Olin suggests that your columns
are unsuitable for religion, but half a page is
regularly devoted to it, including the vicar’s
opposition to ‘the extreme right’. Aren’t such
matters of public importance and even local
interest?
It took many thousands of years of ‘violence
and bloodshed’ and ‘bleak emptiness’ among
human populations, before ‘Christ Jesus
came into the world’ with the ‘love of God’,
according to the vicar, so I doubt if a brief
private chat with him ‘over a cup of coffee
and a scone’, as Mr Olin kindly suggests, will
get us very far.
Yours sincerely,
David Ashton
HOLT IN BLOOM
Dear Caroline,
May I say a hearty word of thanks on behalf
of The Holt Society to the Town Council and
all others involved in the magnificent display
of planters, tubs and hanging baskets filled
with lovely flowers which have adorned the
streets of our town over the past weeks?
It would be great if we were to win prizes
in the Anglia in Bloom competition which
inspired this initiative. But, win or lose,
everyone has benefited from the colourful
displays which have raised the spirits and
warmed the hearts of locals and visitors alike.
Yours joyfully,
Steve Benson
HOLT FESTIVAL
Dear Caroline,
This year’s Festival was right up there with
the best.
I was able to attend three events. Mariola
Cieniawa’s piano recital devoted to Chopin
was of the highest quality and the same can
be said of Retorica, the violin duo. It was
also a coup for Holt to host a performance of
Thomas Tallis’s mighty motet in forty parts
Spem in alium from the first Elizabethan
age. There was a delightful Fringe Festival
in our parish church (who also provided fine
catering), and friends who attended events
which I missed were all complimentary.
Credit also to the two excellent art exhibitions
featuring St Ives and Munnings.
Yours sincerely,
Richard Turbet
CAN YOU HELP ‘LITTLE
STAR’?
Dear Caroline,
‘Little Star’ meet every Thursday morning at
10.00am in Holt Community Centre. We are
a group where knitting, sewing and crochet
come together with laughter and friendship,
to make items for the families of babies
born sleeping, the homeless and the shoebox
appeal. ‘We make to make a difference’ and
would welcome anyone to join us.
We would also like to ask if there are any
readers, who would be able to help us collect
tents and sleeping bags for the homeless from
the campsite at the Sundown Festival, being
held at the Norfolk Showground in Norwich
on the 5th September? We are also in need
of a person with a transit van who could help
with transportation.
If there are any readers who could help,
please could you contact me on 07783
083854.
Yours sincerely,
Amanda Veal, Little Star
UKULELE CLUB
Dear Caroline,
Although I am an ‘alien’ from the Fakenham
area, I wondered if any of your readers might
be interested to know of our weekly daytime
ukulele club which meets on Tuesdays from
10.00am - Noon at the Gallow Sports Club off
Hempton Road (adjacent to the racecourse).
Whether beginners or experienced players, all
are welcome and advice can be given on what
instrument might be best for you (they come
in different sizes).
Anyone interested is invited to contact John
on the following email:
[email protected].
Yours sincerely,
John Lee
COMPLAINERS
Dear Caroline,
I see in Issue 357 the usual professional
complainers are at it again. Someone,
something, some official, some business is the
target for their angst, completely ignoring the
positive of the situation or it’s result.
These are the ones who, if they died and went
to Heaven would complain about the pillows!
Yours sincerely,
John Beevis
ARGOS - BATTERIES
Dear Caroline,
A tip for customers of Argos, Cromer.
I always use quality Duracell batteries, as do
many others, and was aware that Argos have
special displays as you wait in the queque to
order and pay for goods.
If you take batteries from their displays on
the approach to their tills the cost of 8 x AAA
batteries was £8.99. I carried on to the till,
cost for 16 = £17.98.
However, if you check at actual tills where
they also display Duracell batteries special
offers are available. 15 + 5 extra Duracell
batteries AAA cost only £9.99 i.e. a pound
more for 20.
A saving of £7.99 and 4 more batteries.
Customer Service? Perhaps customer
awareness!
Yours sincerely,
Chu Tai

HOLT CARNIVAL
REVIVAL FUNDAY
Dear Caroline,
We would like to thank everyone who
attended and supported our first Holt Carnival
Revival Funday. We had a rocky start to
the day when our bouncy castle, rodeo bull,
marque and BBQ person unfortunately had
to pull out due to vehicle trouble but we got
amazing support from local people, who
helped rally round to get gazebos and flags
up. We would like to thank the Scouts for
organising a BBQ at the last minute and
Annette Howard for jumping to the rescue
by generously paying for a bouncy castle and
slide for the day. It was lovely to see families
enjoying themselves and the community spirit
was very much a big part of the event.
We have already booked for next year and
also a Halloween party is on the cards. We
hope to make it bigger and better but we
still need some more helpful hands to get
involved, so please keep an eye out for future
meetings and check out my social media page
‘Bring Back Holt Carnival’ or contact me on
[email protected].
Yours sincerely,
Vicky Curle

ST. NICHOLAS’, BLAKENEY
Blakeney Church is close to the A149 coastal road and dedicated to
St.Nicholas who is also the patron saint of sailors. The present grand
building dates from the 14th and 15th centuries when sea-faring traffic
was the main form of transport for the eastern side of England.
St Nicholas’ has
two towers. The
small bell tower
attached to the
chancel is part of
the original 14th
century church and
now bears a nighttime light visible to
offshore maritime
traffic reflecting
the historical uses
of Blakeney Harbour as a commercial port and present-day uses as a

Day 12 of the Olympic games and Team GB have won 50
medals and are in second place on the medal table. Not a day has
gone by without news of another medal won and Team GB have
already had their most successful overseas Olympic games ever.
One wonders if they can beat their total of 65 medals won in London
2012, though by the time you are reading this we will know the
overall outcome of the medal tally.
In a world that is so divided and torn apart the Olympic games
surely demonstrates how nations can come together to participate
and cooperate with one another in healthy competition. Over 200
nations are represented at the games and the Olympic motto, “The
most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take
part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but
the struggle” determines the attitude of the competitors and
atmosphere of the games.
One thing that stands out from the competitors is the
commitment, dedication, determination and sheer hard work in
achieving their goals in their particular sporting discipline. Team
GB’s success has been achieved not just by more money being
poured into sport which has resulted in better facilities and training
conditions, but by a great amount of commitment, discipline and no
doubt blood, sweat and tears to training and working hard to be the
best. Such focused commitment and training pushes our athletes to
expect and achieve great results and to have the self- belief and
confidence that anything is possible. Surely, it is a philosophy we
can apply to the whole of life and not just to success at the Olympic
Games.
The letters of the New Testament often draw an analogy
between the Christian journey of faith and running a race. The author
of the letter to the Hebrews writes; “Therefore seeing we also are
surrounded with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every
weight, and the sin which does so easily ensnare us, and let us run
with patience the race that is set before us.” Writing to Christians
in Corinth St Paul also takes up the theme; “Do you not know that
in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize?
Run in such a way that you may win it.” There are a number of other
verses in a similar vein which speak of training and discipline in
order to run the race with Christ Jesus and to cross the finishing line
to win the prize that is eternal life in heaven. Of course in this
particular race we can all be winners!
The Olympic Games in Rio, which of course have not been
without their problems and controversy, have still been a light in
troubled times, a symbol of hope that nations can come together and
our athletes have shown us that great things can be achieved. I hope
they have inspired you as much as they have me. Whatever stage we
are in life we should never give up running the race that is set before
us, seizing every moment, making the most of every opportunity that
comes our way as well as creating our own, in order that we can
continue to enjoy life and do great things.
Every blessing,

Monday morning, to coincide with baby weighing and family support drop in sessions. Discovery Cafes, with a
free book for each family, will take place once a month in Fakenham, Blenheim Park and at Kipton Wood (the
former site of RAF West Raynham).
Highlights of the new programme for adults
include Design, Create, Make - a 5 week
sewing course with crèche provided, which
is free to mums and dads with a child under 8 years. This will be followed by
a Level 1 Dressmaking course for those who wish to progress to a recognised
qualification. A Family First Aid course, run by Fleximed training and funded
by the Centre, is planned for the evening of Wednesday 28th September. There
will also be Joy of Food cookery classes and Christmas Crafts for Grown Ups,
both with childcare provided. Free transport to the Centre may also be available.
For expectant parents, the Pathway 2 Parenting 4 week Antenatal Course is
scheduled to run on Wednesday evenings in early October and again in late
November. Mums-to-be booked in to give birth
at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital
and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn
are equally welcome.
On top of activities and courses, Fakenham
Gateway SureStart Children’s Centre provides information and support to any family with a child, from before
birth up to 8 years old. This can include help with parenting issues, such as potty training, sleep problems or
behaviour. The centre can also help with other matters surrounding finding work, choosing childcare, debts,
housing or separation. Based in Norwich Road on the site of Fakenham Infant School, Fakenham Gateway
SureStart Centre serves Fakenham town and surrounding villages including Rudham, Raynham, Colkirk,
Sculthorpe and Syderstone. Opening hours are 8.30am - 5.00pm, Monday to Thursday.

CHANGES TO DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE ARRANGEMENTS
Register to speak in advance.
The way members of the public book their chance to speak about
specific planning applications at North Norfolk District Council’s
Development Committee meetings is about to change.
At the moment people must arrive at least 15 minutes before the
start of the meeting and request to speak either for or against an
application. This is to allow time for the Chairman to rearrange the
order of items on the agenda to prevent people having to wait for a
long time. For ‘minor’ applications, one objector and one supporter
is allowed to speak on each application for up to three minutes. If
several people have attended to speak on a single application either
in support or in objection, they must agree who will fill the speaking
roles. For ‘major’ applications, or those in which the Council has legal
interest or is the landowner, up to four objectors will be allowed to
speak for up to three minutes each. Up to four supporters will be
allowed to speak for an equivalent time in total to that allowed for
the objectors.
From 22nd September those wishing to speak will need to register
email: [email protected]
by 9.00am on the Tuesday before the Thursday meeting (or
48 hours in advance if the day of the meeting is switched
from the usual Thursday). This will allow the list of speakers
to be assembled, the agenda ordered in advance and this
information circulated to key officers prior to the meeting.
Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning and Planning Policy,
said: “The change will assist with the smooth running of the
committee. It will avoid potential confusion at the start of the
meeting as customer service staff try to ensure the names of speakers
are logged against the various items and the agenda re-ordered to
reflect the public interest.”
The new procedure comes into force from 1st September ready for
Development Committee on 22nd September and information about
the new registration process will be online soon.
The number of people allowed to speak and the amount of time they
will be allowed to speak for will remain the same.
The rules for local district councillors and town or parish council
representatives speaking at the committee are unchanged.

Accidental Hero
This is one of those recipes that probably shouldn’t work and yet is
fabulous. It was an accident, as I thought I had picked up ordinary
wholegrain rice, and had actually bought pilau rice instead, which of
course is curry flavoured. Having added it in at the end of the recipe,
and realised my mistake, there was nothing for it but to proceed
and also add some fresh coriander for good measure! (Nothing
ventured, nothing gained after all). The result, thankfully, worked
really well and was so delicious that it is featuring regularly on
the Burn household menu. A note on microwave rice - I only buy
it when it is on ‘special’, i.e. cheaper than usual, at £1.00 a pack.
It does make a really good and quick store cupboard standby. If
you can’t get any, simply cook some wholegrain rice ahead of the
rest of the recipe, plunge under cold water and drain and set aside
until needed. To get the gentle curry flavour, add in a tsp of Garam
Masala whilst stir frying the rice in at the end, with a little extra oil.
I always use wholegrain rice as it behaves so much better than white
rice and doesn’t go sticky, plus it has so much more goodness in it.
Admittedly, it is more expensive, but it is also more filling, so you do
not need as much per person.
This is such a useful, quick and cheap recipe for a lightening lunch or
satisfying mid week meal. And you can change the veg for whatever
is in season, making it versatile too.
Stir frying your veg keeps more nutrients in and keeps a lovely
crunch to them. The haricot beans add a lovely creaminess to the
recipe and provide a good source of protein too.
An all round Gold Medal Winner!.
Final preparations are underway for
this year’s BeachLife activity week
on Sheringham’s cliff top and beach
later this month. Bumper crowds are expected and there is no charge
to join in the fun.
BeachLife is a joint venture by the churches in Sheringham, aimed
at engaging with local youngsters, as well as holidaymakers, and
this will be its fifth summer. It will run from Tuesday 30th August to
Friday 2nd September and is open to all ages up to 17.
Daily activities will start with the ‘Beach Special’ at 10.30am
every day except Friday, where all ages come together at the clifftop marquee on The Leas for music, games, drama and fun and to
introduce the day’s theme, which this year is the Rio Olympics. The
children and young people then split into age-groups for their ‘Going
Deeper’ sessions to explore that day’s theme in more depth before
breaking for lunch. On the Friday, the morning starts at 10.30am with
the Going Deeper sessions. The afternoons comprise of beach games
and sports, giant inflatables including the Demolition Ball, a family
buffet with Samba band, and the tide fight.
Evening activities for young people will include a quiz night with
chips, carnival crafts, a ‘Sheropoly’ challenge around the town and
swimming at The Splash.
“This has become one of the major events in the town’s calendar” said
Peter Skivington, one of the organisers.
Those wishing to attend can download a form from:
www.sheringhambeachlife.co.uk and bring it with them to save time
on the day. Alternatively, anyone can just come along and register on
the morning, from 10.15am.
The website also gives more information about the event, and contact
details.

LLOYD COURT SUMMER FESTIVAL
The team at Lloyd Court, High Kelling, put on a fantastic event on Sunday 31st July in aid of raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society, Air
Ambulance, Fire Fighters Charity and Lloyd Court Amenity Fund, raising a total £1200.00.
The manager Marie Quantrill said, “This was all possible because of the hard
work of Lucy Cubitt who organised the event along with Diana Youngman
and Charlene Pointer”. Marie said, “The support from local businesses and
the people of the wider community was phenomenal. We want to build on the
success of the day in involving different charities and local businesses in giving
something back to the serving community in a fun way.” Marie also said, “The
Holt Fire Fighters put on a demonstration of an emergency situation where they
cut a person out of a car, this really raised awareness of what goes on when all
you see is a road block”.
There was also a dog show, pony rides, traditional games, food and drinks,
Arnie’s chain saw carvings, stocks, children’s fancy dress, giant slide,
Taekwondo demo, tug of war, ukulele`s and a messy challenge where the loser
ended up in a bath of baked beans. The event was geared up for all age groups
and the atmosphere was very lively.
Regional Director, Roy Slater said, “The team have done brilliantly and I would
personally like to thank everyone who has supported this event”.

Simply Calm Kids
In today’s world of high academic expectations and distractions from
technology, more and more children are experiencing difficulties
with attention and concentration, both at home and at school. Many
children and teenagers also experience difficulties managing their
emotions, reporting feelings of anxiety and sleep disturbance.
Teachers and parents can help their children to overcome some of
these difficulties by regularly practicing Mindfulness activities. These
simple activities encourage the focus of attention on the here and now,
allowing children to be more grounded and focused on their current
experience. By attending to the present moment, children can begin to
more effectively manage their feelings and worries.
An easy and enjoyable way to practice mindfulness is to go outdoors
and experience nature, take a walk on the beach or wander through the
countryside.
Encourage your child to use all of their senses, choose a colour and
notice everything that you see of that colour, stop for a moment and
listen to all of the sounds (near and far), walk slowly and notice how
the ground feels under your feet (even better with bare feet), take
some deep breaths and feel the air in your nostrils, notice anything
that might have a smell.
Mindfulness can also be practiced regularly at home and in the
classroom, at points of transition from one activity to another or at
routine points of the day.
At school this might be at the start of the day or after break times,
taking just a few minutes of quiet sitting, deep breaths or using one of
the senses, to help children settle and be prepared for more focused
work. At home this might be after arriving home from school, before
doing homework or at bedtime.

INVITATION TO MERCHANT NAVY DAY
AT NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT
COUNCIL HEADQUARTERS
GLAVEN VALLEY LIB DEM
COUNCILLOR STANDS DOWN
North Norfolk Lib Dem leader and Glaven Valley district councillor
Andrew Wells has stood down as a councillor after accepting a job
offer away from North Norfolk.
Andrew Wells (left), who previously worked for
local MP Norman Lamb as Office Manager, has
been a postgraduate law student at the University
of East Anglia for the past year. Andrew has said
that he will continue to help people in his Glaven
Valley ward until a new councillor has been
elected, and will work with his successor to make
sure that progress is not lost on sensitive issues in the area.
Andrew Wells said: “It has been a privilege to represent the Glaven
Valley as a councillor, and I am grateful to everyone who has worked
with me to get things done for our community over the past 18
months. There have been frustrations, but I also feel that we have
been able to really make a difference not just on a range of local
issues like planning and enforcement in the villages I represent, but
also in fighting for better council services across North Norfolk. This
has been an immensely difficult decision to make, and I will keep
working for residents in my ward to the best of my ability until a new
councillor can be elected.”
Commenting, Norman Lamb said: “I’m very sorry to see Andrew
move on. He worked with me for the last five years, up until last year.
He was an immensely valuable member of my team and in his short
time on the District Council a really effective councillor. But it’s not
surprising that he’s been given an opportunity with his career that was
impossible for him to resist - because he is someone of tremendous
talent who will go a long way.”
The by-election to choose a new Glaven Valley District Councillor
is likely to be held on 29th September. The ward includes Blakeney,
Morston, Wiveton, Field Dalling, Saxlingham, Letheringsett,
Glandford, Brinton, Sharrington, Thornage, Stody and Hunworth.
Red Ensign will be raised
Anyone with connections to the Merchant Navy, including veterans
and those currently serving, are being invited to NNDC’s Cromer
headquarters on 3rd September for a flag hoisting ceremony of the
Red Ensign.
The event will recognise the work of members of the Merchant Navy,
including their role in the two world wars and our continuing reliance
on modern day merchant seafarers who bring in 95% of our imports
including half of the food we eat.
Local dignitaries and youth groups with sea connections will
be invited, but there is also a general invitation to all who have
connections to the Merchant Navy.
People attending are asked to arrive at the Holt Road offices at
10.45am for an 11.00am start. A small reception will follow the
hoisting of the Red Ensign, which is the UK Merchant Navy’s official
flag.
The event will be hosted by North Norfolk District Council Chairman
John Lee, who has many links with the sea as a working crab
fisherman who comes from a family line of sea fishermen and a long
heritage with the RNLI.
“Both Cromer and North Norfolk as a whole have a very long and
close relationship with the sea and with people who work on or in the
sea, whose efforts can sometimes go
unrecognised,” said Cllr Lee. “The
opportunity to show our respect for a
hard working group of people, who
operate in a difficult environment for
all of our benefit, is very welcome.”

NORFOLK FOODBANK GIVEN
ELECTRIC SUPPORT
A North Norfolk food bank will provide a lifeline for even more
families in crisis after cutting its running costs with the introduction of
an all-electric Nissan e-NV200 van.
Cromer and District Food Bank, which covers an area of 200 square
miles, supplied three-day emergency food packages to 2,409 people in
need, including 920 children, last year.
And now it will be able to help even more vulnerable local people
after taking delivery of its new 100% electric Nissan van, which has
been funded by a grant from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund
and supplied and sponsored by local Nissan dealership, Crayford and
Abbs.
The Nissan e-NV200 costs just two pence per mile to run and has
significantly lower maintenance costs. The charity will use the savings
it makes to feed more families.
Ella King, Project Manager at Cromer and District Foodbank, said:
“We cover around 200 miles a day making deliveries and before we
were spending a small fortune on diesel. Now though, the e-NV200
has cut our running costs significantly and that’s money we can
plough straight back into providing food for the people we exist to
support.”
She added: “There’s a huge and growing need for food banks in and
around this area so the addition of this van and the support of the
Sheringham Shoal Community Fund and Crayford and Abbs is a real
boost.”
THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAIL
BUDDHA IS THE GOD OF LOVE
For far too many years people have been unaware that Christian
preachers are Buddhists; and that the love element in Christianity is
Buddhist. Buddha is the God of love, and the God of the Jews was
Buddha, no Christian preacher will argue with that. Christianity is
a Jewish form of Buddhism, that is the truth, and nothing else but
the truth. The passage below is from the Gospel of Buddha, chapter
XLIX. Verse 34 and 35.
“The Tathagata lets his mind pervade the four quarters of the world
with thoughts of love. And thus the whole wide world, above,
below, around, and everywhere will continue to be filled with love,
far-reaching, grown great and beyond measure.
Just as a mighty trumpeter makes himself heard - and that without
difficulty - in all the four quarters of the earth; even so is the coming
of the Tathagata; there is not one living creature that the Tathagata
passes by or leaves aside, but regards them all with mind set free,
and deep-felt love.”
The Gospel of Buddha is published by Open Court Publishing
Company. For more secrets see our book THE SECRETS OF THE
HOLY GRAIL, Written by Maurice Gray, price £4.50, available
from Graves Convenience Stores, Briston or phone 07887 793666.
www.holtchronicle.co.uk
Kevin Abbs, Director at Crayford & Abbs Nissan in Gypsies Lane,
Bodiham, said: “Foodbanks are so important to families across the
country so we were delighted to be of help to Cromer and District
Foodbank, whose work is having a great impact in the area.
More and more businesses are making the switch to electric motoring
and immediately seeing the benefits. We hope they will enjoy the
vehicle as they continue to help more families and young people in
need.”

The week-long festival began with the announcement of the winner of the annual Holt Festival Art Prize.
This year’s winner was Lara Cobden from Gressenhall (right, with judge Amanda Geitner (right)). Her painting
In The Enchanted Garden was chosen from 190 entries that had been whittled down to a shortlist of 30. Organiser
James Glennie said, “Lara’s winning work was amongst many strong entries but there can
only be one winner. It is technically amazing and the reflections of the moonlit sky give a
mysterious edge to an otherwise calm warmth.”As well as a cheque for £1,500 Lara has the
chance to have her work displayed at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.
Elsewhere in the festival there were sell out appearances from Gyles Brandreth, Jacqui
Dankworth, leading journalist Kate Adie (left), amazing Polish pianist Mariola Cieniawa
making her very first UK concert appearance outside London and many others. Forensic
mind reader Colin Cloud amazed a packed Auden Theatre and caused every jaw in the
house to drop in amazement and disbelief that a man can deduce such things. Another big
hit was the return of international film star Julie Christie, reading poetry with Anthony and
Ben Holden. Other big names at the festival, now in its 9th year, include novelist Joanna Trollope, comedians Jenny
Éclair and Mark Watson and Dire Straits founder John Illsey.
Around 35 per cent of the festival programme is free and there was a much
expanded selection of events for children this year, ranging from story telling to
dance workshops to the swashbuckling all action family play Captain Morgan and
the Sands of Time and Norwich Puppet Theatre’s Oddly.
The week came to a sweet conclusion when pop legends The Searchers (right),
wowed the audience in the open air Theatre In The Woods with a set packed with
sixties hits. Lead singer Frank Allen said the band were thrilled and honoured to
play such a unique venue.
Holt Festival, Artistic Director Charles Pugh said, “This has been such a successful
festival, so many people enthused about the events. I’d like to say a big thank
you to the festival team, especially our marvelous volunteers. It feels like a Holt
Festival to be proud of. Now of course we must look forward to 2017!”
Planning for the 2017 Festival, which runs from Saturday 22nd to Sunday 30th
July has already begun!

AGE CONCERN NORTH NORFOLK
NEEDS YOU!
PHILOSOPHICAL THOUGHTS… (from a reader)
Is it wrong that only one company makes the game Monopoly?
The grass may be greener on the other side, but at least you don’t
have to mow it.
I like long walks, especially when they’re taken by people who annoy
me.
Sometimes I wake up grumpy .......... other times I let her sleep.
It’s discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty
and how few by deceit.
Age Concern North Norfolk is inviting you to
become a Volunteer Befriender to provide
companionship to an older person.
If you could spare an hour or more per week to
share a cup of tea and brighten up someone’s day,
we would love to hear from you.

WRECK IN
BLAKENEY HARBOUR
ENTRANCE
The wreck of the SS Hjordis a 976 ton Norwegian collier which
went down off Blakeney Point in 1916 now sits on Blakeney bar
in the middle of the Blakeney Harbour channel entrance posing
a real hazard to vessels coming in and out
As the channel has moved half a mile to the east in the last year
it has uncovered the wreck and the flow of water around her has
scoured her out.
Harbour users, who are represented by the Blakeney Harbour
Association, have been receiving regular updates in the last
month or two.
Blakeney Harbour Association volunteers have continually rebuoyed the channel entrance and the Trinity House vessels
MV Galatea and MV Alert have been seen off Blakeney in the
last weeks as they positioned a new warning buoy.
Full details and coordinates can be found on the Blakeney
Harbour Association website:
http://blakeneyharbourassociation.co.uk/latest-news/
Association secretary Charlie Ward said, “It’s quite astounding
just how far the channel has moved over a very short space of
time. With the wreck now in the middle of the channel and the
channel continuing to move East, there is a lot of work for our
volunteers to do, frequently re-buoying the harbour entrance
channel to keep pace with these changes.”

CELEBRATIONS ON HOLT
BELLS from Theo Crowder
IT’S OFFICIAL - HOLT
YOUTH PROJECT HAS IT’S
VERY OWN ROCK BAND!
This year is an important one for the bells of St Andrew’s
Church Holt.
The lowest bells in the tower were installed by the local miller,
William R West and were dedicated on Sunday 6th February 1966.
Most of you will remember Thaxters Timber Yard. Across the front
one could make out the words ‘WR West, Grain Merchant’. That was
where Billy, as he was known, had his mill, right next to the Railway.
Billy had been born at Erpingham in 1895 and this is where he learnt
to ring. When he moved to Holt he got permission to look at the
two bells in the church and to augment them up to six (they were
augmented again to eight in 1989). The first full peal was rung on
them in September 1966 and the first quarter peal in December that
year.
This year there have been several quarter peals being rung, for the
Queen’s 90th Birthday, for the tower Captain’s birthday and also two
by visiting bands.
On Saturday 3rd September a full Peal will be rung in the morning,
this time by an invited band. Also this year we have had several new
members
join the band
who are
already very
competent
ringers and we
would like to
celebrate this
as well. We
hope you will
all enjoy our
celebratory
ringing and
wish us well.
As part of the Holt Festival 2016, Holt Youth
Project’s newly
formed band,
Mr Norm,
delivered their
first premier
performance
to a packed
audience at The
Auden Theatre.
The music and
lyrics were
written by the
young people
themselves.
Although very
nervous the
performance
on stage was
faultless. It
was energetic,
powerful, foot
tapping and
loud!
The band was
only formed 3
months ago starring Bethany, Carlo, Connor, Florence and Megan.
Their single is to be recorded in September and already they have
new ideas for other songs in the pipe line, watch this space for them
coming to a place near you!
Well done Mr Norm we are very proud of you!

MEDICAL RESEARCH CHARITY, HEART

Coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer, but
fortunately a significant number of cases are preventable and the
charity’s priority is to stop people getting the condition in the first
place.
With such a wide variety of healthy options available nowadays,
there’s no better time to kick start your future with a healthier attitude.

food and smoking restrictions, the support is out there and Heart
Research UK is urging people to focus on their health, not just now
but into the future. Your health is, after all, the most important thing
you’ll ever own.
World Heart Day, on 29th September, is the world’s biggest platform
for raising awareness and funds for heart disease and Heart Research
UK is encouraging all people of all ages to find out what they can do
to love their hearts and power their lives. It’s easy to give your heart
the care it deserves, and with just a few simple steps such as eating
more healthily, cutting down on alcohol and stopping smoking, you
can improve your heart health and overall well-being.
Heart Research UK is asking the
nation to get its thinking caps on and
plan something for World Heart Day
to help spread the health message.
Whether you organise a healthy bake
off, a sponsored Step-a-Thon, a 5 a
side football match, a static bike ride,
skydive or even a sponsored weight
loss, the charity can support you with ideas, advice and all you need to
make a success of your World Heart Day activity. Why not plan your
World Heart Day at work, with friends, in your local community or
with your family, anything goes and the more the merrier.
Heart Research UK truly believes that money raised locally should be
spent back in the communities it was raised. Its mission is to always
spend money locally, helping hearts near you.

Volunteer Dementia Champions. The purpose of the
session is to give people an insight into
what it is like to have dementia and, through gaining
a better understanding of the disease, be
enabled to help those living with dementia in our
community. The session is free of charge.

ANOTHER FALCON SUCCESS
On Saturday 6th August St. Andrew’s Church hosted one of Falcon’s
marvellous concerts.
Each one seems to get better and better. These young musicians never
fail to amaze and delight.
This concert was given by an oboist, Emily Ross, and pianist, Seif El
Sin Sherif. They gave us a mixed programme ranging from a Bach
Partita, where Seif made the piano sound almost like a harpsichord, to
contemporary music by Antal Dorati and Jeffrey Agrell.
The oboe is seldom heard as a solo instrument and it was a real
pleasure to hear the Poulenc Sonata for Oboe and Piano.
The next Falcon concert is on 16th October when we will hear two
sisters who play violin and piano.
Get there in good time as I am sure seats will be at a premium.
There is no booking and the concerts are free.

SUPPORT FOR YOUNG ENGLAND
DODGEBALL PLAYERS
Teenage internationals will benefit from strength and conditioning training
Two top young dodgeball players have been given the chance to further improve their chances on the world stage thanks to support from North
Norfolk District Council and the council’s leisure operator Places for People.
Lauren Hems and Holly Edmonds are part of the England Lions Ladies dodgeball team about to travel to the European Championships in Paris
which take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend. They have
previously represented their country in April at the World Cup. The
duo, who both live in Briston and learnt the game during their time
at Reepham High School and College, are completing a strength
and conditioning regime as part of the England Lions development
programme. The women went through a physical assessment day and
were given a rigorous exercise programme by England Dodgeball.
The programme requires regular access to a fully equipped fitness
facility.
North Norfolk District Council staff offered support and in
collaboration with leisure operator Places for People have arranged
for free gym passes for both players at Splash Leisure and Fitness
Centre. Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure said: “We
are delighted to be able to provide support to two young ambitious
international players who are in the process of building their sporting
careers. Dodgeball is a fast paced, highly physical sport which
requires specialist conditioning and we wish Lauren and Holly good

luck at the European Championships in the next few days.”
Holly Edmonds said: “This support is helping us achieve our dreams. Holly Edmonds and Steve Mews General Manager Splash Leisure Centre
Being able to challenge our bodies means we can take dodgeball to the next level; by getting stronger we can be the best we possibly can be.”
Stephen Mews, General Manager Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre, Sheringham said: “It’s fantastic we can support two local athletes. It is
often difficult to get funding in sports and we are happy to support any local sporting talent.”
England manager Johnathan Rudland said: “It is vital for our players to have access to the best facilities to complete their strength and
conditioning programme and it’s fantastic that North Norfolk District Council and People for Places have been able to support some of our team
in such a way. Both Lauren and Holly have the potential to be a part of the England squad for many years ahead and this kind of support will
help them progress as young athletes.”

STEPPING OUT IN A GOOD
CAUSE
HOLT TOWN COUNCIL
Council Office, Holt Community Centre,
Kerridge Way, Holt NR25 6DN Tel/Fax 01263 712149
In 2012 Father Howard Stoker, Rector at St Andrews
Church Holt, and Steve Dyer (right), a member and server at the
church, set out on a 90 mile walk over several days to raise money
towards the building of the extension to St
Andrews Church.
The route combined parts of the Peddars Way
and the North Norfolk Coastal footpaths, starting
at Knettishall and ending at Cromer. Steve Dyer
spoke to members of Holt and District Probus
Club about this adventure at their August meeting,
illustrating his talk with photographs taken along
the way.
In a few weeks’ time Steve will set out to climb 12 Welsh mountains
over 3000 feet high in 4 or 5 days: he has been a keen walker (and
qualified mountain guide) for most of his life; so the challenge of the
North Norfolk walk was less for him than it was for the Rector.
Steve had organised the walk like a military campaign, having worked
out the length of each stretch and arranged for support people to meet
them at each resting place. So it did go like clockwork, in spite of sore
feet and shins.
Over £5,000 was raised and applied to the St Andrews Church
extension, which is of course a completed building now.
Holt and District Probus Club meets at The Feathers, Holt, on the first
Thursday in every month and enquiries about membership (or a trial
visit, visitors are most welcome) should be made to Treasurer Ray
Morgan on 01263 7114789.

REPORT ON HOLT TOWN COUNCIL
MEETING 08.08.2016
Holt Town Council met on 8th August 2016 for its monthly Town
Council meeting.
It was reported that there has been several acts of vandalism during
the month. Tiles and guttering have been broken and plant pots
destroyed with plants being ripped up. This was disappointing news
and continues to cost the Town Council money. After much debate it
was decided to install CCTV cameras in certain locations in the town.
We are hoping that this will deter the vandals and save you all money.
It was reported that the consultation to relocate the Post Office is
underway. The front runner appears to be Budgens, which will mean
extended opening hours and easier parking. The Council was also told
that there may well be a consultation regarding the relocation of the
Tourist Information Centre. The Town Council hadn’t heard about this
and will find out from NNDC what this is about.
There was a lot of debate about the need for jobs in Holt. The
allocated industrial land still remains empty and it appears we haven’t
moved very far in thirty years. Despite umpteen requests for further
meetings with Carters, there is still no movement on this land. The
Town Council felt that perhaps they need to take the initiative and
market the town; however this would require finding some sites
suitable for industrial use. It was agreed that Cllr Prior would go back

MARVELLOUS MUSIC FROM
A TINY MACHINE!
The latest Briston Organ Show on Friday 12th August enthralled the
capacity audience, as they thrilled to the amazing sounds and super
music they were hearing from such a small instrument.
Our player for the evening was the delightful Penny Weedon (below),
one of the most experienced and talented organists in the UK. Her
choice of instrument was the very compact Yamaha D-Deck organ,
a full two keyboard instrument that is
light enough to tuck under one arm when
transporting it from gig to gig, yet the
quality and richness of the sounds was just
unbelievable!
Penny’s programme kicked off with
‘Zambezi’, and followed with such delights
as the March from ‘A Bridge Too Far’,
‘The Hustle’, Sam Smith’s James Bond
theme ‘The Writing’s On The Wall’, the
‘Prelude from Act 3 of Lohengrin’, and
as a finisher she played a faultless and very fast version of Michael
Flatley’s ‘Lord Of The Dance’. As usual, the evening helped to raise
funds for the Copeman Centre in Briston, with the proceeds from
the Raffle and Refreshments making a whopping £192.00 for their
fundraising, and a further £28.90 was raised for our chosen charity,
the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital.
The next show will be on Friday 30th September, when one of the
UK’s rising star musicians will be with us for the first time, the very
clever John Cooper. Tickets are already selling well, at just £6.00
each, with accompanied under 16’s getting in absolutely free.

COUNTY COUNCIL NEWS
To advertise in THE HOLT CHRONICLE
Please ring Caroline on 01263 712177
from County Councillor Dr. Marie Strong
Adults at Risk of Abuse: The number of adults being abused
does not abate so I am repeating the following advice:
If someone you know is being abused call NCC Adult Social Services
on 0344 800 8020 (24 hours a day); text 07767 647670; email
[email protected]; online.norfolk.gov.uk/socialcareenquiry.
(You can also use these contacts if you are worried about a child).
For more information see www.norfolk.gov.uk/speakup.
In an emergency call the police on 999.
Devolution for Norfolk and Suffolk: Whilst not all Norfolk’s
councils voted to continue investigating devolution since Suffolk’s
councils did agree, the process continues. The consultation will have
closed on 19th August and the outcome will be submitted to the new
Secretary of State in early September, a major consideration being the
potential establishment of a Mayoral Combined Authority for the two
counties.
For information as to what is on offer in terms of power and money go
to eastangliadevo.co.uk. As to concerns raised these include: why the
expense of a mayor, deputy and cabinet; why not devolve powers to
existing councils rather than an additional layer of government; some
of the money offered is spread over 30 years, will it still be available;
will urban areas benefit more than rural. County Councillors will also
have a say as to devolution proceeding at full council at a date to be
set for late October/early November.
Recycling Centres all set for hazardous waste amnesties: Residents
can get rid of unwanted toxic chemicals at seven of NCC’s recycling
centres during September. Wood preservatives, bug and weed killers,
paint, thinners, varnishes and special cleaning products are among the
wide range of household chemicals which will be accepted for free.
These are products too dangerous to be tipped down drains and cannot
be put in regular waste bins because they can damage the environment
and need to be dealt with using specialist disposal processes. Sites
include Hempton, Helhoughton Road, Fakenham, NR21 7DY
between 9.00am and 5.00pm on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th
September.
Syrian Refugees: On Monday 25th July Norfolk county councillors
voted to accept, in family groups, 50 vulnerable Syrian refugees into
the county. 71 of the 84 councillors were present; 64 to six with one
abstention voted to take part in the government’s Syrian Vulnerable
Person’s Resettlement Scheme, which will see refugees settled in the
Norwich area. The scheme gives priority to survivors of torture and
violence and is part of a government initiative to accept up to 20,000
Syrian refugees from camps around Syria over the next five years.
Whilst the government has declined to make up the general shortfall
of the costs, all borough and district councils have committed in
principle to contributing towards a predicted housing shortfall for
resettling the refugees.
Better Broadband for Norfolk Information (July 2016 update):
December 2012 NCC signed a deal to bring fibre broadband to
80% of Norfolk’s homes and businesses by the end of 2015. The
BBfN programme completed ahead of schedule in September 2015,
having given 186,000 extra Norfolk premises access to high-speed
broadband. An extension to the programme is now underway
making better broadband available to even more Norfolk premises
and contribute to the national target of making superfast broadband
available to 95% of the UK by the end of 2017. Information is
available on www.betterbroadbandnorfolk.co.uk with detailed updates
every three months. The same website enables you to check if your
property is fibre enabled and which internet service providers (ISPs)
are available in your area, what service they are offering and at what
price. There is not an automatic switch and you have a choice to stay
with copper broadband, switch to fibre and which ISP to use.
Cutting Rural Grass Verges: A previous decision to reduce the
frequency of rural verge cutting on straight roads to every other year
has been reversed. This means there will be a full cut of rural grass
verges on bends, straight sections of roads and at road junctions rather
than just trimming verges at road bends and junctions. The work will
take place during the scheduled second annual grass cutting in July
and August. At this time of the year the wild flowers have flowered
and seeded and it is believed birds will no longer be nesting by the
roadside. An evaluation of cutting will take place before the start of
the new grass cutting season next year.

Fourteen players, including a strong U3A contingent, turned
out on a beautiful day for the annual Golf Croquet tournament.
Only eight players can play at a time, so there were always six byes,
but no-one had byes in consecutive rounds and no-one had the same
partner twice. Matches were
to 4 hoops (i.e. best of 7).
There was only time for
8 rounds before lunch
terminated proceedings, but
Barry Pilgrim (Holt) won all
his six matches, including
a spectacular last-round
win with his partner Harriet
Redmayne (Fakenham), to
take the Harry Bruford trophy.
Our new member John
Parsons (North Walsham)
collected second prize with 4 Barry Pilgrim (right) receives the Harry
Bruford Trophy from Club Chairman,
points.

The croquet season will
continue until October, weather permitting, with play every Tuesday
and Thursday morning.
Solution to No.192:(with black Nh4, sorry - all regular solvers have
been notified) (a) 1.Nf3 d5 2.Ne5 Qd7 3.Nxd7 Nc6 4.Ne5 Nd4
5.Nf3 Nf5 6.Ng1 Nh4 7.f3; (b) 1.f3 d5 2.Kf2 Qd6 3.Ke3 Qf4+ 4.Kxf4
Nd7! 5.Kg4 Ne5++ 6.Kg3 Ng6 7.Kf2 Nh4 8.Ke1.
Beautiful demonstration that a K, but not a N, can lose a move.
Nice also that Pf2-f3 finishes one part and starts the other.
In No.193 Black needs all his 11 moves (including ... Qh4) to the
diagram, so the black Pg7 died at home and we need shields for the
white K. The obvious try (not accurate) 1.f4 e6 2.f5 Bc5 3.Nh3? Bg1
4.f6 d6 5.fxg7 f5 6.Nf2 Qh4 7.Nc3 (e.g.) Nf6 8.g8Q,R+ Ke7
9.Q,Rd8 Rxd8 10.Nb1 Rd7 11.?? Qxf2 fails because White has no
tempo (pass move) at the end, so White needs another plan.
Difficulty 4 - well, those lazy, hazy, crazy summer days need filling,
yes? Solutions and comments to me at 16 Lime Grove, Sheringham

King’s Lynn Hospital CC vs Holt CC
Holt 243-3 beat King’s Lynn Hospital 82 by 161 runs
It was an excellent day for Holt away at King’s Lynn
Hospital, winning by 161 runs.
Holt lost the toss and were put in to bat first, with openers A
Riseborough and C Chapman getting Holt off to a brisk start, largely
dominated by A Riseborough, who brought up his fifty in the 11th
over. Their 69 run partnership was ended when Chapman (14) was
bowled by K Fisher. A Riseborough (55) was next to go, lbw to K
Fisher (2-32). With the score at 74-2, A Spillett and M Spillett formed
a fine partnership keeping the scoreboard ticking over, taking their
partnership beyond 100. With both batsmen on 49, 116 runs into
their partnership, A Spillett was caught at slip. R Thaxter (29 not
out) joined M Spillett (67 not out), who both pushed the score along
quickly towards the end of the innings, helping Holt reach 243-3 in
their innings.
Opening bowlers Thaxter and L Bragg were searching for early
wickets when Bragg (1-18) provided the early breakthrough. All
Holt’s bowlers then took wickets with Thaxter (1-12), J Rutterford (116), G Collyer (1-12), A Riseborough (1-2) and L Riseborough (4-16)
bowling the hosts out for 82, sealing Holt’s 161 run win.
NISSAN DEALER HOSTS CHARITY
GOLF DAY SPECTACLE
More than 100 golfers teed off at the Royal Cromer Golf Club for a
charity event organised by local Nissan dealer Crayford & Abbs.
The Holes Fore Heroes Charity Golf Day raised more than £6000
for the Royal Marine Association and Veterans Norfolk and included
special guest appearances from former Royal Marine veteran and
triple amputee Mark Ormrod and Duncan Slater, the first double
amputee veteran to ski to the South Pole.
Prizes were given for the longest drive and nearest to the pin and
the four-strong team of local business KKD came out on top in the
competition.
And in the evening, golfers heard more about the work of the Armed
Forces from Brigadier
Max Marriner and given
an insight into the brave
and courageous journey of
Mark, who suffered lifechanging injuries while
serving in Afghanistan
back in 2007.
Kevin Abbs, Director at
the dealership on Gyspies
Lane, Bodham, said: “The
Two forces personnel, Fraser Wibberley weather made it perfect
(Rtd) Royal Marines and Major (Rtd)
golfing conditions and we
Michael Abbs Veterans Norfolk,
were delighted so many
picking up their cheques for £3000 each!
people came along to play
and donated generously to two very worthy causes.
It was great to have Mark and Paul on the day who each told us about
their incredibly inspirational stories.
We hope the money raised will help more soldiers who are injured
while serving their country and I’d like to thank Royal Cromer Golf
Course, their professional team of Lee Pattinson and Will Woodrow
and the sponsors who without them, we wouldn’t be able to have put
this event on.”
The Royal Marines Association provides practical help, support and
stability at all stages of a member’s life and has branches across
the world. Veterans Norfolk brings together all Norfolk’s Service
Charities and, in conjunction with the County and District Councils,
works to look after the welfare and well-being of Norfolk’s Armed
Forces and Veterans community.
Holt CC vs Narborough CC
Narborough 154 all out lost to Holt 157-7 by three wickets
Holt kept their promotion hopes alive with a thrilling three wicket
victory over league leaders Narborough.
After winning the toss and choosing to field first, Holt got off
to a top start with the ball, with Channell (2-12) providing two
early breakthroughs. Thaxter (1-26) bowled M Coe (15), leaving
Narborough 27-3. Channell and Thaxter both bowled very
economically throughout their spells and didn’t allow Narborough to
get away.
J Rutterford (2-37), M Scase (2-32) and L Riseborough (3-43) then
dismissed the remaining Narborough batsmen for 154.
Holt’s openers Chapman and M Spillett went in pursuit of 155 and
added 21 together before Chapman (17) was bowled.
Channell joined M Spillett and they moved Holt into a strong position
together, adding 95 runs, before Channell (41) was bowled.
This started a collapse, which saw Holt go from 116-1 to 127-6,
losing five wickets for 11 runs. Thaxter was lbw and L Riseborough, T
Rutterford and Lickley were all bowled.
Fortunately for Holt, opener M Spillett was still in, and Holt required
28 runs for victory. Baker (2) provided some resistance in a 12 run
partnership, before he was caught at square leg. Collyer joined M
Spillett, with 16 runs required. It was nervy times when Collyer got
off to a very slow start, but in the penultimate over, M Spillett (61
not out) and Collyer (10 not out) saw Holt over the line, with Collyer
edging the winning runs for four to seal the three wicket victory for
Holt.

After I applied for jobs at both a library and a shoe shop, my husband
said he hoped that I’d get the one at the shop.
‘‘It would be nice to have employee discounts on shoes,” he
explained.
Then, without thinking, he added, “Of course, If you get the job at the
library, we’ll get free books.”
APPEAL FOR WITNESSES FOLLOWING
INCIDENT IN WELLS-NEXT-THE-SEA
I was in a garden centre and passed two young men looking
quizzically at a sundial. One of them asked me what it was.
“It’s for telling the time,” I said. “When the sun shines on it, it casts
a shadow over the relevant Roman numeral so you know what hour it
is.”
The youth looked amazed. “What will they think of next?” he said.
Police are appealing for witnesses after an altercation in Wells-NextThe-Sea on Friday 5th August.
The incident happened at approximately 6.00pm in Staithe Street
where a man has pushed his way through a group of people and then
became verbally abusive. The man is described as being white, over
6 feet tall of a muscular build and approximately 25-30 years old.
He was wearing a dark vest top, cream coloured knee-length socks
and a blue baseball cap. Anyone with information should contact
PC Amanda Rose at Fakenham Police Station on 101. Alternatively
contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or via their
anonymous online form at http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
My father phoned a medical helpline with a question about the dosage
of one of mum’s heart medicines.
The nurse on the other end wasn’t sure she’d heard of the product, so
my father asked if she’d like its barcode to look it up.
“Yes, please,” she said. “Could you read it from left to right?”
“OK,” said my father. “Thin, thin, thick, thick, thin, thin, thick .......”

leg. The passenger of the Transit received minor injuries as a result
of the collision. Officers would like to hear from anyone who may
have witnessed the incident or has information concerning the driving
manner of either vehicle prior to the collision.
