Americana music phenomenon, Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three are winning the world over with their incredibly energetic and intense live shows. Their latest album, Live in Holland, is the first recording that captures the potency of these performances. Recorded in April 2012 at the legendary Paradiso in Amsterdam, Live in Holland shows the band skillfully delivering 14 songs of western swing, early jazz, ragtime, Appalachian folk, and country blues. Doug marched his Tex Mex mix into music history, recording with Bob Dylan, jamming with the Dead, and creating the Grammy winning Texas Tornados, the first country supergroup with Freddy Fender, Flaco Jimenez and Augie Meyers. Doug’s been musically important ever since he played on stage - at age eleven - with Hank Williams at his very last performance. As the living embodiment of Texas Music, Sahm recorded in many different genres oftimes melding them together arriving at that aforementioned gumbo. In 1999, Doug made the most personal musical statement of his wildly diverse career, this time going back to the country. Now, here’s Doug’s last album before his passing finally available on glorious vinyl as it was meant to be. DELUXE 150 GRAM VINYL AND FREE DOWNLOAD CARD. David Vest’s early career had him working as half of a cocktail lounge duo with a young Tammy Wynette (for whom he also produced her first demos). Then, years on the road with Big Joe Turner, Jimmy T99 Nelson and other masters eventually settling in the Northwest and tearing things up with the late Portland bluesman Paul DeLay while coaxing a few solo albums into the market in the last decade. And now, this release; which encapsulates his many years into a stunning homage to piano blues players of the past with a few new tunes that fit in rather nicely. Nothing fancy, just very tasty and very, very real. TBFLW maintains Federale’s use of soaring operatic vocals, fanfare blasting trumpets, lonesome whistle, twangy reverb drenched guitars and swelling men’s choir. TBFLW includes lyric driven songs (feat. Alex Maas of the Black Angels and KP Thomas of Spindrift), string performances (Portland’s 45th Parallel Ensemble); with members of the Oregon Symphony; and pedal steel (Paul Brainard of Richmond Fontaine). Federale has toured the west coast several times, including with The Brian Jonestown Massacre. I really think Jules captured a real special feel with her recording of it. I just wanted to see if my own version of it could come anywhere near hers in capturing that same sort of feel. Of course it's naturally different, but it was a joy trying.” - Jason Lytle on Won’t Be Long. “The first time I heard this song, I felt fitted with it. I related to it at this time of my life, the song was like a sweet reminder. There aren’t many songs like this one, it’s a simple message, a not easy to do message. I enjoyed the time spent with it. It really was an honor to give this song a go!” - Jules Bees on Get Up and Go. This time around the band took a different approach by working with Shawn Simmons who brought the band’s assembled creativity together in a different way and explores their combined vision with expertly crafted songs that will transport you to another time and place altogether. This is where songwriter Jason Dodson’s storytelling culminates into characters and places that blur the lines between fiction and nonfiction, the past and the present. Gone are the cheery acoustic strummings of their debut, Enchanted Chapel (2010). Songwriter Nelson and the band instead opted to focus on creating a sinister pop framework to underscore the talents of Nelson’s better half, starlet Mackenzie Mercer. If the infectious pop the band conjure has strayed from its sunnier former-self, so too have their lyrics, revealing the band’s propensity for the dreary and dark. “Dead Animals is what we’ll become,” Mercer and Nelson proclaim in the four-track EP’s first single, Dead Animals. The song perfectly exemplifies the band’s duality, charming but realistic and gloomy all at once. Foreign Spells is a document of The Young Evils’ brash honesty and virulent rhythms and harmonies. Eat Your Young creeps across your speakers like a quiet storm, ebbing and flowing at every turn, from the exorcised demons of The Pendulum to the bookending outbursts of Shock Notice and In the Hollows. All of which sounds incredibly confident despite the record’s shades of darkness. That’s because Solid Gold spent years developing their musical and lyrical concepts, beginning with their smoky club formation at the University of Wisconsin and becoming much more of a serious pursuit once the group moved to Minneapolis and tracked their 2008 debut, Bodies of Water. This LP version contains a digital download card. It’s a powerfully energetic, brassy, big sound, reminiscent of Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Ike & Tina Turner, and the JBs. The album is the result of a second collaboration with co-producer Cam Scott, (Andrea’s keyboard player and arranger for several years). It’s a follow up to her last CD, Little Sister Got Soul, which peaked at #18 on the Living Blues Radio Charts, and garnered many recognitions and rave reviews, including 2009 Australian Female Blues Artist of the Year. With a recorded history of over 20 titles, this is the first release on Omar’s own Big Guitar Music label. The Howlers include Wes Starr and Bruce Jones who’ve been with Omar since Big Leg Beat (1980) as well as Mike Buck, Ronnie James, Casper Rawls and Derek O’Brien. 6 7827-72019-2 7 Walking Papers, Walking Papers Label: Sunyata Records UPC: 678277207028 Cat: WP001 Price: $9.90 Walking Papers is a blues-based rock band formed by Jeff Angell and Barrett Martin. Jeff sang and played guitar for the bands Post Stardom Depression and The Missionary Position, and Barrett, a drummer and multi-instrumentalist, played for grunge pioneers Skin Yard and Screaming Trees, as well as the super groups Mad Season and Tuatara. Guest musicians include Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver), and Mike McCready (Pearl Jam, Mad Season) amongst others. 6 7827-72070-2 8 The Coal Porters, Find The One Label: Prima Records UPC: 793962000255 Cat: SID025 Price: $9.40 Find The One is the newest album by ex-Long Ryder Sid Griffin’s new band. Produced by UK folk legend John Wood (Fairport Convention, Nick Drake, Squeeze, Beth Orton); Find The One also has a guest appearance by both guitarist Richard Thompson and Beatles pal/BBC DJ Brian Matthew. They may be UK-based but The Coal Porters could’ve all emerged form the hills of Sid’s native Kentucky where their music of choice was invented.. Earlimart, System Preferences UPC: 614511805322 Cat: SHIP003 Price: $7.15 Label: The Shipp Records This is a lush and lovely soundtrack for a sad, beautiful world. It’s an album that touches on disillusionment with and acceptance of technology, complex relationships, and lost weekends. The Los Angeles-based duo of Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray retain tones and textures familiar to fans of the band’s six previous albums of whispering and stomping indie rock. From familiar sonic waters, they embark on a journey that allows them to get lost -- with the novel excitement that entails. Kelly Joe Phelps, Brother Sinner And The Whale Label: Black Hen Music UPC: 875531008371 Cat: BHCD-0070 Price: $9.90 Digging up the ground he broke on Roll Away The Stone, Kelly Joe Phelps returns, playing slide guitar once again, to his blues/gospel roots that informed his very successful earlier work. With a return to simple songwriting and the slide guitar that made him greatly successful in his earliest years, this album is destined to reconnect with a great deal of his old fans, as well as drawing in new ones with successful promotion. The Maldives, Muscle for the Wing Label: Spark and Shine Records UPC: 751937415428 Cat: SPRKSHN027\ Price: $9.40 Described as having a transcendent live show by indie radio touchstone KEXP; this time around the band took a different approach by working with Shawn Simmons (The Head and The Heart, Grand Hallway, Lemolo) who brought the band’s assembled creativity together in a different way and explores their combined vision with expertly crafted songs that will transport you to another time and place altogether. Ken Stringfellow, Danzig in the Moonlight UPC: 616892077145 Cat: SPRKSHN036 Price: $9.40 Label: Spark and Shine Records Most commonly known for his work with The Posies, Big Star and R.E.M., Ken Stringfellow releases his fourth solo album, Danzig in the Moonlight; recorded at the legendary ICP Studios in Brussels, and mixed by up and coming production team TheLAB in Los Angeles. Ken also received contributions from musicians in Mumbai, Italy, Seattle and more; Charity Rose Thielen from buzz band The Head & The Heart joins him on Doesn’t It Remind You of Something. The album has moments of fearsome electro-tinged menace, balanced with some of the most intensely intimate fragility you’re likely to encounter on record this year. Stolen Babies, Naught Label: No Comment Records UPC: 614511805520 Cat: NOCOM108 Price: $8.15 Stolen Babies put out their highly anticipated second full length album, Naught, produced by Ulrich Wild. In true Stolen Babies fashion, this album is a well rounded roller coaster ride that will leave their fans screaming for more! With heavy hitters like Mousefood and Never Come Back to theatrical cabaret of Swimming Hole and Behind the Days to goth/industrial club anthems like Splatter, Second Sleep and Prankster; Naught is an album not to be missed! Cee Cee james, Blood Red Blues UPC: 687888201226 Cat: BRB0012012 Price: $10.90 Label: FWG Records Blood Red Blues, produced by Legendary Grammy Winning Jim Gaines is Cee Cee’s third and most exciting CD to date. Cee Cee jumps up several notches as Jim brings out the best; pushing Cee Cee to hold nothing back as she rises and meets the challenge with ease. Solid Gold, Eat Your Young Label: Totally Gross National Product UPC: 789577696020 Cat: TGNP025 Price: $7.65 Solid Gold’s second album is a slow-burning set of skittish synths, glassy beats, ripple effect riffs, and melancholic melodies that leave you wondering what left a trail of scar tissue deep within the group’s core trio (frontman Zack Coulter and multi-instrumentalists Matthew Locher and Adam Hurlburt). That’s because Solid Gold spent years developing their musical and lyrical concepts, beginning with their smoky club formation at the University of Wisconsin and becoming much more of a serious pursuit once the group moved to Minneapolis and tracked their 2008 debut, Bodies of Water.
