January 2012
Welcome!! Welcome!!
the first time.
All of us here at Burnside hope you all had a great Holiday season - welcome to 2012!!
Here’s hoping this new year is full of positive changes for all of us in this industry.
One of the best kept secrets in contemporary folk music has to be The Refugees. The three part
harmonies of Cindy Bullens, Deborah Holland and Wendy Waldman, combined with their awardwinning songwriting are simply stunning. It’s time to let the secret out to the rest of the world.
Small in stature, but a giant in the blues world with his Louisiana-infused gut-bucket singing and
playing, Little Freddie King is back with Chasing tha Blues. The man’s life has been rough and
tough and so is his music. Elected to the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2010, LFK tours the
world as one of the last blues men standing.
It’s been 35 years since The Diodes emerged as THE punk band from Toronto travelling the world
with hits as the first Canadian punk band signed to a major label. Still active to this day and
touring, Action/Reaction is a reissue of the 1980 album with six bonus tracks available on CD for
Bursting out of the NorthWest, check out Lost Lander, Black Pussy and the two new vinyl
releases from Good To Die Records - Sandrider and Monogamy Party.
Congratulations to these burnside distributed artists for their 2012 Blues Awards nominations:
Mac Arnold, Alexis P. Suter, Too Slim and the Taildraggers, Rich Del Grosso, Patrick Rynn and
Mary Flower.

AMERICANA
The Refugees, THREE
The Refugees are proud to present their 2nd CD, THREE. They continue their trademark sound of chill-inducing
three-part harmony, stellar songwriting and musicianship - creating a unique blend of country, rock, folk,
blues, and Americana. Cindy Bullens got her start as a back-up singer for Elton John, and accompanied John
on multiple tours. She was nominated for two Grammy Awards, one for her work on the Grease movie soundtrack, and one for her first solo album, Desire Wire. Deborah Holland began her career as a member of the critically acclaimed, Animal Logic. Comprised also of Stewart Copeland and Stanley Clarke, the band earned her
recognition as both a singer and a songwriter during the 1980s and 90s. Wendy Waldman has been recognized
as one of the leading recording artists and songwriters in music since the debut of her band Bryndle in the 1970s,
followed by a successful solo career.

BLUES
Little Freddie King, Chasing tha Blues
“Little Freddie King’s life has always been hard. Hell, not long ago he was blown out of New Orleans by Katrina
and he went missing for a time. It’s always been this tough and it always will be. Chasing Tha Blues takes you on
a rough ride through Freddie’s life. It’s all here, including what is the toughest, grittiest blues anthem you’ve ever
heard - Born Dead. Born Dead puts you in a high row in the cotton fields. A few simple lines and it’s clear that
these same fields were for hanging. No matter whether it’s at home at BJ’s in NOLA, on the road in New York,
or overseas, the vocals are made of grit and tears and the guitar licks can’t be written down. The power is in
the spaces between the notes.” - Scott M. Bock, Living Blues (USA), Juke (UK), Block (Netherlands)

Laurie Morvan Band, Breathe Deep
How do you top winning the 2010 Blues Foundation Award for Best Self-Produced CD? Record its’ follow up,
Breathe Deep, which has now been nominated for the same award in 2012. “Guitarist Laurie Morvan’s
muscular, yet lyrical, guitar lines lead the charge while the band proves to be adept at sexy funk with Mojo
Mama; with hard hitting commentary on the current state of the national dialog, Back Up the Train; some Stevie
Ray style slow blues, It Only Hurts When I Breathe; and a soon to be classic, No Working During Drinking Hours”
(Blues Source). Additional national press is on the way in 2012, with articles and reviews forthcoming in
Downbeat, Vintage Guitar, Elmore and more.

The Silvertones, You Got Me Spinnin’
You Got Me Spinnin’ is the latest album by The Silvertones. The band plays the blues (their own way) in Texas
where they’ve always felt that they were the underdogs. Living in Texas, The Silvertones feel blessed to be in the
same ballpark with some of the greatest musicians in the world (all of whom are from Texas, of course). The
Silvertones have been together for over 17 years and have been voted Best Blues Band of the Year four times
by the readers of the Dallas Observer. They are not only talented musicians, but also gifted song writers having
written every song on the album. You Got Me Spinnin’ runs the blues gamut of songs ranging from slow blues
to jump blues.

COUNTRY
Jody Nix, Bright Lights & Country Music
Bright Lights & Country Music by Jody Nix follows his successful Twin Fiddles Turn Me On release. Once again,
Jody has shown his mastery of Western Swing & Texas Shuffle Beat Music. Jody & his band work well over
100 dates a year in Texas, New Mexico, Missouri, Oklahoma and other SouthWest locales. Like his daddy,
Hoyle Nix, before him, Jody is a real professional with a truly entertaining show and career that started at the
ripe old age of 8 and continues to this day.

JAZZ
Barrett Martin Group, Atlas
Former Screaming Trees and Tuatara drummer Barrett Martin returns with a new solo album from his heavy
jazz ensemble, The Barrett Martin Group. Atlas is the band’s 4th album to date, and this time around the
sessions were produced by longtime friend and producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees).
The 13 songs on Atlas are built around Barrett’s exotic drum and percussion grooves, which nod to musical
influences from around the globe. The album soars with majestic trumpet melodies and elegant piano harmonies,
supported by tightly wound bass and guitar and shimmering vibraphone, making Atlas a gorgeous global
journey from one of Seattle’s fiercest jazz ensembles.

PUNK
Pinata Protest, Plethora Reloaded
Plethora Reloaded is a response to the success of 2010’s debut by the San Antonio band that takes punk rock
to the cantina and invests the wheezing old accordion with a new rock’n’roll potency: the same album kicked
up a few notches by re-recording the bass and guitar tracks to reflect changes in the group personnel and
its enhanced power and focus thanks to national touring. Hailed as “the tastiest norteño/rock recipe to date”
by Alibi.com, Piñata Protest have been described as the “Mexican Dropkick Murphys” or “the love child of
Flaco Jimenez and Sid Vicious,” cannily rewiring both the Tex-Mex and punk traditions to create one of the most
bracing new ripples in rock music’s ongoing progression in recent memory. And Reloaded transforms Plethora as
originally recorded into a collectors item. That’s a two-for-one deal that’s hard to refuse.

ROCK/POP
The Anabasis, Back From Being Gone
The Anabasis is a progressive rock collaboration conceived by multi-instrumentalist and composer, Barry
Thompson, with lyrics by noted professional author, George Andrade. This band lineup makes up a who’s who
of some of the world’s top players in the progressive rock and metal universe. In addition to Barry (guitar,
bass and keyboards), The Anabasis features Ryo Okumoto (Spock’s Beard) as primary keyboardist and arranger;
Per Fredrik “PelleK” Åsly (Damnation Angels) on lead vocals; Gerald “Mully” Mulligan (The Lee Abraham
Band) on drums; Gordon Tittsworth (Images of Eden, All Too Human) on lead and backing vocals; Lee Abraham
(Lee Abraham Band) on bass; Stefan Artwin (Relocator) and Brick Williams (Hourglass) on lead guitar, plus a
host of other special guests too numerous to list.

Black Pussy, On Blonde
If Hendrix had lived, he probably would have ended up recording Black Pussy’s On Blonde in 1971 as a
kerosene- soaked hard rock warning against the commercial, pretentious pop overkill to come. Black Pussy is
the sound of a dirty, immense engine coming down a two-lane blacktop; a trip fueled by the roar of a 1967purchased bong in the back of a 1972 Nova. For a long, lovely, midnight desert ride, it makes a stunning
companion, jaw- grindingly full of dangerous ideas snug in cigarette-burned red leather car seats.
The Vinyl LP is 180g black virgin vinyl with free cd insert.

The Copper Gamins, The Copper Gamins EP
From the mountains of Mexico comes a band and sound melding such diverse inspirations as 60s garage
rock, the films of Charlie Chaplin and the field recordings of John Lomax; The Copper Gamins are the latest
wrinkle in the guitar/drums duo trend of acts like The White Stripes and The Black Keys - yet at the same
time something completely original and distinctive. It’s raw and naïve music that rattles with inspiration
and imagination; like the unpolished fire of The Oblivians and the sly, obtuse nuance of Eugene Chadbourne and
revelatory experimentalists The Residents. This five-track EP introduces a group that already sparked a buzz
through the underground in their brief residence last year in Central Texas when the band literally lived in a
blue garage.

The Diodes, Action/Reaction
The Diodes 1980 album, Action/Reaction, on CD for the first time; with 6 bonus tracks (2 previously unreleased); full liner notes and new interviews with each band member. The Diodes were the ground zero of the
1977 Toronto punk explosion, running Canada’s first punk club, The Crash’n’Burn and the first Canadian punk
band signed to a major label, CBS. Their debut album released worldwide in the fall of 1977, ahead of the Sex
Pistols and many of their UK and US peers. After two albums on CBS and two hits (Red Rubber Ball and Tired Of
Waking Up Tired), The Diodes re-grouped and re-emerged in 1980 with a harder, gigantic guitar-driven rock
groove that took their pop sensibilities from AM to AOR radio with the instantly infectious hit, Catwalker.
The original Diodes are still active and still touring. See YouTube for recent concert footage.

IfIHadAHiFi, Nada Surf EP + 3
Anyone can play a song, but not everyone can put themselves through the wind-sprint endurance tests that
IfIHadAHiFi’s sets, and records, consist of. Active since the year 2000, the Milwaukee group has released 3 1/2
albums to an ever-increasing amount of critical acclaim. Their new release, the Nada Surf EP (its title a
response to the titular band’s use of the name If-I-Had-AHiFi for the title of their latest record) and its three bonus
tracks retain the aggressiveness of past recordings. Fear not, however - their trademark feedback, howling
synthesizers, and frenetic drumming are still front and center.

The Life, Alone (deluxe edition)
The Life were named best new Northwest band in 1987, based on their live performances and their debut
album, Alone. They were not grunge. They were 100% Seattle rock. Great songs. Great singer. Freakazoid
monster guitar player. Great band. This release features the entire 10 song Alone album remastered by Green
Monkey guru Tom Dyer. Sounds ridiculously fresh! It also features an entire second bonus disc, Witness The
Will, containing 17 songs recorded for their unreleased second album shortly before they stepped off the
precipice into history.

The Loom, Teeth
The vinyl LP version of the title solicited in November. For the members of Brooklyn five-piece, The Loom, the
reason that they choose to play music together in the first place is the simple search for joy. It’s a concern
that both far outdates, and is reflected in, the searching folk, intricate percussion, and psych-influenced
dissonance and atmospherics that they love and wind into their music. But Teeth, their debut, is not all joyful.
Like the music that inspires them, it focuses more closely on the myriad hurdles that ensnare us along the way.

Lost Lander, DRRT
Lost Lander is a project founded by songwriter/forester Matt Sheehy when he began work on a new album with
producer Brent Knopf (of Menomena). The two often worked remotely - using the internet to communicate ideas
- and from time to time they met at majestic spots on the Oregon coast to work in closer proximity. The result is
a song-oriented pop album full of shiny synths and bombastic drums. The limited first edition features
specialty packaging that unfolds into a home planetarium. Listeners will be able to use a flashlight to project song’s constellations onto a darkened ceiling.

Massy Ferguson’s new 5-song EP showcases three new songs and two live tracks, one live track from a show at

Monogamy Party, Pus City
Live, Monogamy Party is a force of nature. Frontman Kennedy spends more time punishing the audience with his
body, as he belts out impassioned stream-of-consciousness rants. His bandmates follow suit with a powerful,
punk-inspired attack. It’s unrelenting, aggressive, and impossible to ignore. The band have also managed to
capture this raw energy in the studio, working with producer Chris Proff (Strong Killings, Mercy Ties, Ravenna
Woods) on a debut 10" EP called Pus City released on fledgling Seattle imprint Good to Die Records. This is
a band that demands your attention. The best you can do is look right into the eye of the storm, and hold on for

Amanda Thorpe, Promenade
Amanda Thorpe is a British musician living in New York, with two previous solo indie albums; and a former
member of the Wirebirds and Bedsit Poets. Promenade is her solo debut for Bongo Beat, which released two cds
by her previous group, Bedsit Poets. This album highlights guitars by Tony Scherr (Bill Frisell, Norah Jones) and
other acclaimed New York musicians; Robert Jost, Don Piper, Brad Albetta and Craig Chesler. Half of the songs
were co-produced with Brad Albetta (Freddy Johnston, Martha Wainwright, The McGarrigles, Teddy Thompson),
and the other half, with Don Piper (Don Piper Situation, Bedsit Poets). It’s a wonderful mellow pop album to fall

Adrian Legg, Marco Pereira, Lulo Reinhardt & Brian Gore, International Guitar Night VI
The sixth in a series of “live” recordings from International Guitar Night’s annual North American tours. Brian
Gore is a melodic fingerstyle guitarist from San Francisco who founded International Guitar Night in the 90s as
a cultural haven for the world’s finest guitarists to share their original ideas in a public setting.
Lulo Reinhardt, grand-nephew of Django, is a spontaneous and passionate musician whose unique style, Latin
Swing, blends the imagination and feeling of the gypsies into a rhythmic, flowing symbiosis of elegance and spirit. Since the 1990 release of his first U.S. recording, Guitars and Other Cathedrals, Adrian Legg has more than
lived up to the expectations stirred by an ongoing avalanche of praise from critics, fans, top guitar mags and
peers alike. Brazilian Marco Pereira started as a classical guitar student at the Music and Drama Conservatory

James McCartney, The Complete EP Collection, 2 CD Set
Label: Engine Company Records
UPC: 700261341743
Cat: ECR1112000
Price: $9.90
The international success of James McCartney’s debut digital-only EPs, Available Light and Close At Hand, introduced a talented singersongwriter and his music to the world. This special two-disc set produced by David Kahne and Paul McCartney includes both of his
debut EPs in their entirety, along with an additional EP’s worth of never-before-released bonus tracks. Parade Magazine writes, “James
has inherited his father’s musical gifts and more . . . It’s not easy doing this sort of thing; in fact, it’s down right brave.”
Doomtree, No Kings
Label: Doomtree Records
UPC: 707541384490
Cat: DTR-032
Price: $8.15
No Kings is the second all-crew release from the Doomtree collective. All seven members of Doomtree have built solo careers as
rappers, producers, or DJs. (Roster cheat sheet: P.O.S, Dessa, Sims, Cecil Otter, Mike Mictlan, Lazerbeak, Paper Tiger). Doomtree has
earned a reputation for aggressive, innovative production that spans genre and era-borrowing from punk, classical, obscure rock,
experimental, and foreign styles. Ultimately the title, No Kings, is a call for both rebellion and respect-obey no kings, seek no thrones.
Dessa, Castor, The Twin
Label: Doomtree Records
UPC: 707541377195
Cat: DTR-030
Price: $8.15
Dessa’s first full-length record, A Badly Broken Code, introduced her to a national audience. To tour the album, she assembled a small
cast of talented instrumentalists: vibraphone, piano, viola, and stand-up bass; re-interpreting the disc for a dynamic live concert.
Castor, The Twin captures these new arrangements for ten of Dessa’s strongest previously released songs. It also includes
The Beekeeper, the haunting first single.
Screaming Trees, Last Words: The Final Recordings
Price: $9.90
Label: Sunyata Records
UPC: 678277191327
Cat: STLW001
In the waning months of the 20th century, legendary Seattle band Screaming Trees went into the studio one last time. Having been
released from their label and realizing that the outlook was grim, the Trees entered Stone Gossard’s Studio Litho to preserve the last
batch of songs the band had written. Produced by drummer Barrett Martin, these sessions proved to be their last.
Caspar Babypants, SING ALONG!
Label: Aurora Elephant Music
UPC: 884501549615
Cat: 004
Price: $8.15
SING ALONG! is the 4th album by Seattle kids entertainer Caspar Babypants. Caspar is also known as Chris Ballew from the rock band
The Presidents of the United States of America. Guests include “Weird” Al Yancovic, Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam, singer songwriter
Pete Droge and kids artist Frances England. Caspar continues to draw from an old school folk and roots tradition (Spider John, Bad Blue
Jay and Helicopter) and updates classics (Ba Ba Black Sheep, Ring Around The Rosie and Pussycat Pussycat).
Sean Chambers, Live From The Long Island Blues Warehouse
Label: Blue Heat Records
UPC: 735885100186
Cat: BHR102
Price: $8.15
Live From The Long Island Blues Warehouse captures the raw energy and excitement of a Sean Chambers Band live show. Their last
release, Ten Til Midnight, spent three months on The Living Blues Charts as well as reaching #5 on the XM/Sirius BB King Bluesville
Charts and #6 on The House of Blues Radio Charts. Recorded in a studio before a live audience; this is an accurate representation of
the band’s live shows without sacrificing any sound quality.
Nick Moss, Here I Am
Label: Blue Bella Records
UPC: 800595101720
Cat: BBCD 1017
Price: $9.90
Moss has given guitar lovers plenty to sink their teeth into with extended songs and solos, but there’s more to Here I Am than just great
lead playing. Moss and his band again use a foundation of blues, rock, and roots as starting point, but take new and unexpected turns
on these tracks. These 10 new originals combine to create the most diverse album of his career as he pushes his sound, songwriting,
and lead guitar work further than ever before.
David Grissom, Way Down Deep
Label: Wide Load
UPC: 022099849339
Cat: 014
Price: $6.65
The third solo release from one of Texas’ premier Rock, Blues, and Americana guitarists. Backed by the powerhouse rhythm section of
J.J. Johnson (John Mayer, Derek Trucks) and Chris Maresh (Eric Johnson, Bonnie Raitt), this effort finds Grissom digging deeper into the
Austin Blues/Rock vein he is well known for. David has built a broad fanbase through his stints both on stage and in the studio with
Joe Ely, The Allman Brothers, John Mellencamp, Storyville, Buddy Guy, James McMurtry, John Mayall, Dixie Chicks and many others.
Shelby Earl, Burn The Boats
Label: Local 638 Records
UPC: 884501596794
Cat: L638R006
Price: $6.65
Shelby Earl is an American songwriter with a sharp pen and a world-class voice. Produced by John Roderick (The Long Winters), BTB is
made up of stunning, indie-folk-rock songs with recurrent themes of lost loves, reaching for the unattainable and waking up after a
long slumber. Collaborators include members of the Long Winters, Telekinesis, Maldives, (former) Fleet Foxes, the Head and the Heart.
Too Slim and the Taildraggers, Shiver
Label: Underworld Records
UPC: 635961182825
Cat: UND0018
Price: $7.65
Shiver is the 10th studio album from this Seattle group, who celebrate their 25th year of touring worldwide. Their last two releases,
Free Your Mind and The Fortune Teller charted on the Billboard Top Blues Chart a total of 17 times reaching as high as #5 and #9
respectively. Shiver features guest performances by BMA award winner Curtis Salgado, Duffy Bishop and the Texas Horns. The band
has sold 100,000 albums since their debut release in 1988. Too Slim and the Taildraggers have won over 30 Northwest Music Awards.
