A crisis summit of
the UK, US and
Spanish leaders is
set to take place in
the Azores as "fluid
and dynamic" diplomacy over Iraq continues.
Tony Blair will join US
President George Bush
and Spanish prime minister Jose Maria Aznar in
the mid-Atlantic islands
on Sunday.
The three countries are
struggling to win support
for a their draft UN resolution on Iraq - with UNbacking for action against
Saddam Hussein seen as
vital for Mr Blair in his
battle to win support at
home.
A Downing Street
spokesman said on Friday
there was still hope of
finding consensus, with
intensive diplomacy "in
extra time, but not at the
end of the game".
And Foreign Secretary
Jack Straw said diplomacy
over Iraq could be over in
"days or weeks".
He was speaking after a
meeting with Muslim
leaders in his constituency
of Blackburn, Lancashire.
Earlier, Downing Street
said Mr Blair had a "good
natured" telephone conversation with French
President Jacques Chirac
for ten minutes on Friday.
The UK government has
accused the French of
"poisoning" the diplomatic process by saying it
would use its UN veto on
any future motion on Iraq.
Downing Street said Mr
Blair and President Chirac
both expressed their
"firmly held" views and
that the French leader had
stressed he would not accept a resolution which
was "an ultimatum to Saddam".
Mr Blair's spokesman said
President Chirac had said
he would examine the
UK's proposals.
But he said the French
leader had insisted there
were no circumstances in
which France would agree
to moves which
"authorised or implied
military action should the
tests not be met".
Mr Blair's spokesman earlier acknowledged the
"difficulties and problems" standing in the way
of an agreement, but said
there was hope of a deal
"because we believe in the
logic of resolution 1441".
The prime minister is under intense pressure to secure an agreement amid
warnings that members of
his cabinet will quit if the
UK goes to war on Iraq
without UN backing.
Close allies of Robin
Cook have said that the
Leader of the Commons is
likely to resign in such a
scenario.

Cabinet Split
ROBIN COOK signalled to
fellow ministers yesterday that
he will quit the Cabinet if
Tony Blair takes Britain into
war with Iraq without a second
UN resolution.
.
Clare Short, the international
development secretary, made a
more conciliatory contribution,
despite her weekend attack on
Tony Blair's "reckless" conduct. She emerged to tell aides
that she felt more positive
about progress on the role of
the UN and the prospects for
the Middle East peace process.
Ms Short gave the impression
of rowing back from her weekend interview - telling BBC
News she hopes the prime minister's battle to win a UN vote

succeeds.
Significantly, Gordon Brown,
the chancellor and an ally of
Ms Short's, took to the TV studios yesterday to back Mr
Blair's position more energetically than at any time during
the Iraqi crisis.
As America and Britain strove
to keep diplomacy alive, with
suggestions that the UN negotiations might last until Monday,
Mr Cook “put down a marker”
at a tense Cabinet meeting that
he would go if the UN did not
sanction war.
His remarks were said to have
been coded but, according to
several present, left little

doubt about his intentions. Clare
Short, the International Development Secretary, has also threatened
to resign. This could not have
come at a worse time for Mr Blair.
Mr Blair enlisted Gordon Brown
and John Prescott to rally Labour
MPs and the public behind the case
for war, and there were signs that
the backbench rebellion was being
controlled. Mr Brown, who made a
ferocious attack on the French
during the Cabinet meeting,
gave a series of interviews in
which he accused France of
unreasonably blocking attempts to reach international
agreement.
Significantly, Gordon Brown,
the chancellor and an ally of
Ms Short's, took to the TV studios yesterday to back Mr

diary of their trip.

Prince Charles In storm
Renewed criticism is being
levelled at Prince Charles'
household after it was revealed a trusted aide will
carry on doing royal work
despite resigning in the wake
of a critical report. The report, by the prince's private secretary Sir Michael Peat, said
Mr Fawcett did bend the rules
by accepting numerous gifts,
such as a £2,500 watch and
£3,000 club membership, without declaring them.
But it cleared him of any financial impropriety, saying he
could not be severely criticised
because the rules were not enforced and he made no secret of
such gifts.
The Prince of Wales, who is out
of the country on a short tour of
Bulgaria, said: "The review
does not make comfortable
reading in some parts, but I
accept full responsibility and
all the recommendations.
"I am determined that the administrative procedures in my
household should be to the
highest standards and I have
asked Michael Peat to ensure
that this is the case."
The report also strongly criticised the palace's handling of a
male rape allegation, saying allegations by former royal valet
George Smith in 1989 were
handled too dismissively.
Michael Fawcett will still work
freelance for the palace, carrying out some event management and being given "some
financial help".
This will enrage critics of the
prince, and Friday's papers are
all full of speculation regarding
the settlement for Mr Fawcett.
The Daily Telegraph and other
newspapers suggested the value
of the settlement was as much
as £1m.
Other reports of the settlement
include that Mr Fawcett will be
able to remain in his £400,000
"grace and favour" house and
will get guaranteed work worth
£100,000 a year.
Claims dropped
Prince Charles is reported to
have forced the valet out after
the allegation, saying: "George
must go".
H2U, Newsday Issue - March 14th, 2003
And
Fiona
Shackleton,
Charles's lawyer, is reported to
have said: "I had instructions
from the boss [Prince Charles]
to make the whole business go
away".
Mr Smith later dropped his
claims.
The inquiry was ordered following the collapse of the trial
of Princess Diana's former butler, Paul Burrell.
The report found neither the
Queen nor Prince Charles's
households had displayed
"improper conduct" over the
trial.
But it said Prince William had
known 18 months before the
trial's collapse that Mr Burrell
was safeguarding Diana's possessions.
That was because Mr Burrell
had written to him after a police
visit, saying: "Items which have
been taken from me, many of
which were given to me for
safekeeping, should be returned
to you."
The report was most critical of
the prince's household concerning the sale of official gifts.
"I am not going to make any
excuses - things have not been
well handled in this office," Sir
Michael told reporters.
from the bank of the Vilcanota,
but was unable to get help.
For the first part of their trip
down the river all was calm.
However, about seven kilometres downstream the canoe carrying Ms Riedl-Laing and her
children Yannick, four, Fabio,
two, and Olivia, one, capsized.
Her husband, who had been
following the canoe by road,
frantically called for help.
Reports suggest the few farmers in the area did hear him but
were unable to understand
what he was saying.
Ms Riedl-Laing managed to
rescue all three of her children,
but before she could save herself she was swept downstream
by the rapids.
It has been reported that the
three children were wearing
life jackets, but that there was
not one for Ms Riedl-Laing.
One of her children reportedly
saw their mother on a rock
soon after, but by the time the
firemen and rescue workers
arrived on the scene there was
no trace of her.
Although the Vilcanota river is
usually calm, this is Peru's
rainy season.

El Nino has brought additional
rains and flooding to this part

Ms Potts hands over the cheque
We were very pleased to be able to
welcome Kate Griffin to the school
yesterday. Kate is a key member of
Link Community Development
(LCD), the organisation through
whigh we are twinned with Joubert
Ludidi School in South Africa. The
prime purpose of the visit was for
Ms Potts to present a cheque for
£1109 to LCD as a donation for its
‘Walk for Africa’ scheme. This
money was raised by the students
on the sponsored walk which took
place at the end of the summer
term, LCD being one of the four
charities to benefit. The money will
be used by LCD to help its work in
schools in South Africa, Ghana and
Uganda, as such it will benefit
thousands of young people across
the continent – directly improving their life chances.
News Team presentation
Kate kindly agreed to officially
award the ‘H2U’ badges to the
members of the News Team who
produce this newsletter (see the
photograph below). She had already seen a number of the issues
and expressed how impressed she
was with the energy and purpose
of the group.
Developing the relationship
Additionally, we took the oppor-
tunity to investigate ways in
which we could strengthen our
links with our twin school to our
mutual benefit with the support
of LCD. The discussion was
very fruitful and we hope to be
able to announce a very exciting
project in the near future which
will be of huge benefit to all the
staff and students both here at
Highcliffe and in Joubert Ludidi.

HOROSCOPES
Aries:The presence of the weekend revives you. By evening, you're chatting merrily with people whose eyes you could barely meet this morning.
Now that you've found your power, remember where it was hiding.
Taurus:Move with confidence into the next phase. The Stars toughen
you up for the next set of adjustments. By next week you'll be well established in the role of your choice.
Gemini:Snap out of your mood. You're at the head of the line for the next
good thing that comes along. Possessiveness is okay when others see that
you're claiming something central to your well being.
Cancer:Keep your friends posted and your mailing list up to date. As
long as you remain in contact, the details are free to come and go. Eventually everyone will know the whole story.
Leo:You definitely learned a lesson, but this isn't the time for review. The
Stars wind you back up to your usual level of intensity. The subject is on
hold until after the weekend
Virgo:It could be a long day. After all of this intake, your boss or client
expects some serious output. Postpone tonight's social plans and rder
takeout for dinner. You'll meet this deadline yet.
Libra:As the Sign of partnership, why not let someone close to you assume part of the burden? The Stars are ready for you to shake things up.
Now there's no price tag attached.
Scorpio:It's okay to lose interest. People get tired or bored and life goes
on. As long as you did your best, you're free to experiment with the next
thing. There's no reason for Scorpio to play the martyr.
Sagittarius:Now that you've chosen a direction, everything is easier. You
draw near the answers to your questions. Strong belief is contagious. Others are ready to work with you.
Capricorn:Now that you've established yourself, everyone else is moving on. You enjoyed your time at the centre, but you know that it was
never the ideal position. Stand up to meet the next influence that comes
sweeping in.
Aquarius:A short-term fix buys you a few moments of relief. Next week
you'll be able to consider a more permanent solution. Run along and play
-- you've earned your little bit of fun.
Pisces:Now that you're circulating your name or resume, it spreads in
bigger and bigger circles. A job well done is a machine that keeps running
after you step away from it. Pat yourself on the back and collect your reward

Panic room 15
Having been rather
quickly persuaded into
buying a four-story Upper West Side mansion,
Meg Altman (Jodie Foster) is intimidated and
her daughter Sarah
(Kristen Stewart) is intrigued by the house's
"panic room", a safe
room designed to keep
unwanted people out. Made impenetrable by a thick steel door, laser
sensors, an independent phone line, and television monitors, the panic
room promises maximum security yet its mere presence seems to remind its inhabitants of an imminent threat in the house. Not surprisingly, the panic room is put to the test, as three intruders break into the
house one night. Instinctively locking themselves inside the panic
room, Meg and Sarah soon find out that the men's object of interest is
inside the panic room, and that they will not leave until they manage to
get it. This is a good movie even if it does suffer from uneven acting. (

Sell out, baby, yeah! In the new
millennium, the international
man of mystery has become such
a pop culture phenomenon that
Hollywood has turned his exploits into a feature film filled
with star cameos that the studio

Austin still finds himself battling
foes: his father, Nigel Powers (played by Michael Caine), has been kidnapped by an evil Dutchman named Goldmember. Austin enlists the
aid of his archnemesis, Dr. Evil, who's being held in a maximumsecurity prison, to help track down Goldmember, who has taken Nigel
back in time to 1975. Austin jumps into his pimpmobile/time machine
and heads back to the disco era to save his father, unaware that Dr. Evil
has orchestrated a prison break and is actually in cahoots with Goldmember to take over the world. Austin teams up with former flame
Foxxy Cleopatrato rescue his father and save the world yet again. But
could Nigel's kidnapping be a ruse to get to Austin? Who knows! The
plot of Austin powers in goldmember is so convoluted it is practically
a side note to the characters' wackiness. Your best bet is to sit back and
try to enjoy the ride without focusing too much on inane details--like a
storyline.

GAMES
007 Nightfire NOW OUT!
GAMEPLAY
The controls are responsive, the
levels are innovative and the
weapons are excellent. The AI is
second to none with enemies being
smarter than ever. There is a good
mixture of shooting and driving
levels, which help to make the
game not become stale and tried.
Pierce Brosnans face also adds
to the realism.

SOUND
The sound in Nightfire is
pretty amazing. With realistic
gunshots and speech. The one
downside is that the game does
not feature the
voice of Pierce

LIFESPAN
The other downside to the game is
the short life span.
But the multiplayer mode
makes up for it,
with locations and
characters from
previous Bond

The driving missions are very fun
but the main action is in the FPS

Diesel dragsters
Diesel coupés have been seen
as a way of getting in a car
with a sporting image or sleek
appearance whilst enjoying
lower running costs and improved fuel economy. A bit of
a compromise
when you think
of the Peugeot
406 HDI Coupe
or Mercedes
CLK 270 CDI they're both very
pleasant, but
wouldn't you
prefer their
petrol counterparts? BMW's
330Cd, however,
is the most appealing combination of coupé bodystyling and
diesel power we've tested so
far, and a model highly desirable as a performance car in its
own right.
BMW's 3.0-litre, six-cylinder
engine made a solid impact in
the 730d, 530d and 330d saloons and Touring estates, and
the engine has generally been
hailed as the best performance
diesel ever produced. It has
now been boosted for 2003 to
204bhp (an extra 20bhp) and
302lb ft/410Nm of torque, or
pulling muscle, (up 5 percent),
and has shed a little weight. It
features second-generation
common-rail fuel-injection
technology, which pushes fuel
into the cylinders even more
quickly at higher pressures,
and enhanced combustion effi-
ciency for higher power output
and lower fuel consumption
(now 42.8mpg on the combined cycle).
Fuel can be injected into the
cylinders up to four times per
operating cycle, meaning
smoother running and reduced
particle emissions, and new
combustion chamber geometry
and an extra 68cc of capacity
optimise the fuel/air mixture.
Other developments include
more a responsive turbo turbine and compressor, and a
more efficient intercooler,
which help the smoothness
of performance from startup and when pulling away.
A new engine management
system with rapid-heating
technology helps ignition
in cold temperatures. Add
to all this the now-standard
six-speed manual gearbox,
and BMW's powertrain is
a pretty appealing, state-ofthe-art package. Hell, with
carbon-dioxide output of just
177g/km, the 330Cd even
makes sense as a low-tax company car, if there are no radical
changes in the BIK system before it finally goes on sale in a
year's time.

the big deal? Porsches are built
to do this sort of thing all day
long. But off-roaders aren't.
Off-roaders aren't meant to go

DIOUF SPITTING INCIDENT MARS
‘THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN’
Last night, Liverpool and
Celtic played out a 1-1 draw at
Celtic Park in the UEFA Cup
Quarter Final First Leg, or
‘The Battle of Britain’. However, there was an air of controversy over the game, which
centred on El Hadji Diouf.
Not for the first time this season, Diouf was at the centre of
spitting allegations. On this occasion however, television replays show he clearly spat at
the Celtic fans. The police have
said they will be launching an
enquiry into the incident, and
his manager had this to say: ‘It
was a shame that the incident
cast a shadow over the performance of my team. The player
has apologised for his reaction.
It was totally inappropriate,
whatever the provocation’. He
can now expect a fine of two
weeks’ wages.
In the football match, it took
Henrik Larsson just 100 seconds to break the deadlock, following a premature return from
a broken jaw. John Hartson
knocked the ball back into the
Liverpool goalmouth, Alan
Thompson drove it back and
there was Larsson to steer the
the bar with a dipping shot and
a fierce effort went just over.
After a spell of frantic defending, Liverpool equalised and
got the vital away goal they
needed. John Arne Riise raced
towards the Celtic box and
stabbed a pass into the path of
Emile Heskey, who shot home
from a tight angle.
After the early spell of pressure
from both sides, the game died
After that, Heskey burst into
the Celtic penalty area in search
of a second goal, but he had to
stretch to make contact with
Diouf’s cross and subsequently
sent his shot wide.
As players tired and the game
wore on, Owen had a great
chance to win the tie for Liverpool, when he found space on
Celtic’s back-post, before
putting his shot wide.
