And just like that, we come to the end of the fraternal year. With only
a couple events remaining, and a few more meetings to attend, an entire year has passed since I became the Grand Knight. It simply amazes me at how quickly the time has gone by and how much has been
accomplished in that time. It has been an extremely interesting year,
with its ups and downs, its many firsts, and how our council has
strived to not only settle in, but to establish a new routine in our new
home. Our council continues to flourish and adjust to the many changes that have occurred in
our recent past.
This spring we saw several new ideas take root, such as our youth concert and speaking event,
which turned out to be a great success. Our Scrap Metal Program is starting to take shape. We
made our presence known in our new neighborhood, assisting in their annual Porch Party, and
our assistance to Marillac Place in kick-starting their Baby Bottle Campaign. Our Shred It
event reached new heights. Our redeveloped Golf Tournament with a new date and venue
seems to be on track and also a success. Rose Sunday, our Monthly Rosary for the Unborn and
the Catechesis Study Program keep marching on. Our Everyday Heroes program is now running like a well-oiled machine putting smiles on children who face unimaginable challenges that
no child should ever face.
We have also experienced some challenges with our Cars Draw Campaign and we have had to
re-evaluate our pursuit of a charitable number designation with the government in our aim to
expand our activities as a council. As Grand Knight, I too learned a lot in this short period of
time that will only help our council as we move forward.
I would like to thank all the members of our Council Executive, and the members of our Cooperative Board for all the hard work and dedication that they have exhibited during this fraternal
year. I want to thank all the Committee Chairs, Event Chairs and volunteers for all the hard
work and time dedicated to make sure all our events ran smoothly. A big thank-you to all the
members who regularly attended our Council and Foundation meetings, who gave input, and
expressed ideas that helped shape our council activities for the year. Without all of you none of
this would be possible.
The one thing that you can’t help but notice as Grand Knight is the constant need that is required in our world today. Not a week goes by that we as a council don’t receive requests for
charitable donations or volunteer help from our council. Though it would be nice to be able to
help them all, we are constantly stretched, forcing us to make tough decisions helping only some
of those in need.
Herein lies the challenge. This is where we need ALL our members to contribute and become
involved. We need more ideas, input and activities to meet the ever-growing challenges of today’s world. As our council begins to make plans for the next fraternal year, I urge all of you to
consider giving a little more of your valuable time to the Council, volunteering whenever possible. As the world changes, we need to change with it in order to better meet those challenges.
Today’s world needs the Knights of Columbus more than ever. Please give what you can.
Wishing everyone a healthy, relaxing, safe and enjoyable summer.
Vivat Jesus,
Ted Jasica

Chaplain’s Message
St. Francis and Pope Francis...
Dear Brother Knights and Families,
Over the last month I had the great grace to take some people to Italy on a pilgrimage.
The two most profound experiences we had was first seeing Pope Francis. We were at a
special mass to canonize three saints. Two women from the western hemisphere and one
from Italy. We were amongst over 80,000 people in St. Peter Square. The mass was very
moving and then he blessed us at the noon hour. His blessing of humility and compassion
was felt by all of us. He is such a human example for his simplicity and apparent affection. He touched us all.
The second experience was praying and celebrating the Eucharist at the tomb of St. Francis of Assisi. The atmosphere there was very peaceful and quiet. The whole group was moved by this town where Francis lived.
Two human people that try to follow the life of Jesus. We as Knights and Families are also called to by our baptism
to be ignited by the love of God.
As always you and your families are in my deepest prayers.
In Peace,
Father Peter Meyer
Chaplain
RosaryfortheUnborn
Dear Echo Followers,
I'd like to invite you out to pray a rosary for the unborn on the third Wednesday of every
month at 12:15 at Freeport Hospital in the Chapel. The most powerful way to cause change in
our world is through prayer, and each 'me we gather to pray for the unborn, we are saving a
few precious lives. Hope to see many of you there!

Council 1504 Advocate
MOTORIST’S PRAYER
Each time I drive, Lord, may I feel,
Your hands on mine upon the wheel.
Give me a careful, watchful eye,
For young and old, when I drive by.
Keep me from speeding needlessly,
Passing Earth's beauties heedlessly.
I want to use this car for You,
To drive my friends in safety too.
But all these things can never be,
Unless, O Lord, You drive with me.

Deputy Grand Knight’s Message
Dear Brothers:
The 2013 Cars Draw campaign is complete and regardless of the challenges that we had this year
we where successful in raising money for our charities and the Arthritis Society. The success can
mostly be attributed to the commitment, dedication and hard work of all the volunteers that
manned the mall and/or purchased their own tickets. A special thanks to St. Mark Council for
allowing our council to sell our tickets at their ticket booth when they had sold out. That gave us
four more days of ticket sales.
Congratulations to all the brother Knights that stood for office for our executive elections. Some where defeated and to those that where elected or acclaimed during our annual executive elections may you have a blessed year.
On a special note for me, I participated in the exemplification of the 4th degree in Hamilton on April 28 with the support of Sir Knight Chris Pugh. The
lesson of the 4th degree is Patriotism and it was definitely a WOW moment for
me. Without giving away the degree you will be proud to be a Catholic Canadian Sir Knight when you experience the degree.
Yours in Christ,
Kevin Morrissey
Deputy Grand Knight
Congratulations!
To Brother Joy Kuncheria and Brother Czester

On April 23rd Columbus Kitchener Co-opera'on Inc. held its first Annual General Mee'ng at the new Columbus Centre at 797
Guelph Street in Kitchener. The mee'ng was chaired by Chairman Whit Husk who, with the help of the directors, explained the
change from “Columbus Kitchener Inc.” to “Columbus Kitchener Co-opera've Inc.”
Basically it was on the recommenda'on of our accountants that it would be to our advantage. At the mee'ng we had our elec'ons and the following were elected:
Chairman:
Vice Chairman:
Teasure:
Secretary:
Brian Hughes
Gerry Kelly
Eldon Killen
Gary Megaffin
Building & Grounds:
Council Liaison:
Sports Liaison:
Director:
Mike Delenardo & Jim PadgeH

Reinhart Schreiter
Whit Husk
The hall, which brothers are star'ng to refer to as the Columbus Centre, is open on Saturdays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. for anyone
who wishes to come and see our new facility, or any night a mee'ng is being held. There has been quite a bit of work done to the
property already, and in June there will be some major renova'ons done in the backyard to make our facility more user friendly.
You can check this out and enjoy it at Family Day on July 14th (details below).
If you have any ques'ons or ideas please call or e-mail me at 519-578-3401 or [email protected], or call the hall and
leave a message at 519-893-1504 (does that look familiar?).
Last but definitely not least, I think speak for all the membership when I say thank you to Brother Whit Husk for the last two years
as Chairman of the Corpora'on for the effort that he put in, in the transi'on from Manitou Drive to Guelph Street.

Foundation Report
By now I am sure most members have being to 797 Guelph Street. We have made some changes and have more
planned. I would like to thank the brother Knights who have made some suggestions for new activities.
This was a year of change but we were successful in holding several events. The Spaghetti Dinner at St. Joseph’s
Church raised over $1000 for the Comboni Missions. This year we had a focus on youth and, as part of the Year of
Faith, two new events were held: On March 22, “Why YOU Need the Church – An Evening of Gospel Music” at St.
Mary’s High School featuring Canadian Gospel Music Association Award winners Critical Mass and Mags along
with speakers David and Jodie Wang; on Monday, May 27 we had Fr. Graham Keep who celebrated Mass and gave
a very informative talk and shared his ideas on the year of Faith, family and friends. Fr. Graham also addressed
the students at St. Mary’s and Resurrection High School, and from the positive response this is something we will
look at repeating in the future.
Again this year we had the Trip Draw and I know Brian Hughes is getting ready for the 2014 Trip Draw. With the
new events it is important we remember our “BINGO Team” who attend the bingo games every second Tuesday.
Also the Brother Knights who visit the children in Grand River Hospital (OUR Everyday Hero’s) this is every 3
weeks from February to November. Did you take home a baby bottle in support off Marillac Place from church on
Mother’s Day? Did you know that several of your brother Knights donated time to label, package, deliver and, after Father’s Day, collect the 1000’s of baby bottles from the parishes? I thank you on behalf of the new mothers
and their babies for your time and support.
We are in the Central Frederick Neighborhood Association and have helped with the first community event. On
Saturday several Knights helped set up and decorate Horner Avenue, which runs from Samuel to Lancaster Street
in Kitchener. This was a very well organized street party with live music at several locations, games for the children, and a JAM Session at the end of the evening.
The Shred Event was a great success. Thanks to Brothers Peter and Reinhart we brought in 200 lbs. of food plus
$688 in cash donations. With all this good news unfortunately again this year we broke another record ... the OUT
OF THE COLD saw an increase of 28% over 2011. From November to April several brother Knights and some of
their wives joined me to help with this program at St. Matthew’s Church in Kitchener. Council donates a Pizza
dinner (34 Large) at Christmas and in April to help feed the hungry adults and children who cannot afford a meal
... see you in November.
In closing I would like to thank our Grand Knight Ted Jesica for his support and encouragement for the Foundation Committee and I encourage all members to support our next event — Family Appreciation Day on July 14.
Sincerely,
Gerry Kelly

you have moved or changed your current information.
There have been times in the past when someone moves
but does not remember to send updated information, thus
their dues notice gets returned, and until I can find out the
new address, they are now late for their dues.
If you change your email address, also remember to send an
updated one as we have the ability to send out information
via emails. This system works very well, so if you have email

RoseSunday:2013update
Congratula'ons, Council 1504, for a very successful “Roses for Life” (Rose Sunday) Campaign this year!
As of this wriHen Echo submission (May 28th) I have not yet been able to tally all contribu'ons collected as I
am awai'ng a few dona'on envelopes from this past weekend. Rest assured that I will calculate and present
these funds and my final report at our next General Mee'ng on June 18th. Looking into my briefcase, all I can
say thus far is that it looks like a 'dy liHle bundle!
So ... how do we measure our achievements with this program? Well, my goal this year was to ensure Rose Sunday representa'on
during all weekend Masses in May (the month of our Blessed Mary) at each of the 13 Kitchener parishes our council caters to.
Though this equated to 40 Masses I am very pleased to report - mission accomplished!
On behalf of our Grand Knight I wish to extend a very sincere thank you to our Brothers who boldly stepped forward to become
Campaign Leads at our various parishes, and to those members who came out to help with this extremely important pro-life fundraiser. As always, all money raised goes to support Right to Life ini'a'ves in Waterloo Region.

Fourth Degree Report
Father Funcken Assembly 0866
District 35 held a 4th degree exemplification on April 28th, 2013 in Hamilton.
As Faithful Navigator and on behalf of all our Sir Knights we are very happy
to welcome to Father Funcken 4th Degree Assembly 866 our new Sir Knight
Kevin Morrissey. Kevin is presently DGK of Father Funcken 1504 Kitchener.
Thank you to Chris Pugh and Matthew Griffin for accompanying Kevin in my
absence due to my wife Carol’s recent surgery.
As we near the end of our fraternal year at our last meeting in May we held
nominations for election of our officers. We have several nominations and look
forward to new leaders stepping up at our June meeting and accepting the challenge of guiding our assembly as we move
forward.
Our Master, Frank Gallant, has scheduled the Masters Meeting on June 8th in Hamilton. This is a great time and opportunity to meet with the other 4th Degree assemblies and also hear our Master’s and Supreme’s new ideas to help
guide us as a Catholic Fraternal Organization.
As “The Year of Faith” continues and we head into our summer season, Carol and I would like to wish all members and
families a very safe and enjoyable summer. We look forward to seeing you at our annual summer BBQ in July.
In closing, a very special thank you to all our Sir Knights and our Commanders Wayne Curry and Chris Pugh for the
support of our Priests and churches by providing the many “Honor Guards” we have had this part year.

Rolling toward a new season ...
BOWLING
Hardware presented for K of C bowling league
The dust has settled, and the results are in – and this year’s winning team was one of the youngest among our groups:
the Grands. A hearty congratulations go out to the members who dominated the closing months to overtake a number of
squads in a tightly fought battle for first overall league champions.
But when it came to the division championships, the Grands were unable to maintain their momentum, running into the
super hot Trustees, whose late season breakdown was revived during the playoff run – when only pin falls count. In fact,
the Trustees dominated the playoffs – not only winning the A Division but the overall pin count for all three divisions
with 10,316 points.
The Guards, not to be confused with the Grands, won the B Division in what was the closest battle among the playoff
teams, while the Advocates – last year’s overall champions, redeemed themselves with the C Division title.
The season, however, had a number of surprise individual efforts – some from the likely suspects in the league but a few
that came out of left field to dominate the award ceremonies.
Brian Schmalz dethroned perennial High Average leader and all round good guy, Mike “Lefty” George, with a 198 overall
average, versus Lefty’s mere 195. Mere, of course, being a play on the fact that Lefty is always at or near the top with his
game. Rounding out the top three was league president Jamie Reaume, who was only able to muster a 186 average.
The High Single Flat score was presented to relative newcomer John Chafe, whose 317 was never challenged. Bill Stumpf
was awarded the competition with his 294, as Chafe, as well — and with no surprise — was also awarded the High Single
with Handicap – bowling an astounding 367. Rounding out the High Single Flat was Grant Ueberschlag with a 287.
As noted, Chafe won the High Single with Handicap but not without a fight for the top. Pete Psutka, another relatively
young bowler and a generational one, with his father being temporarily benched, came up with a 347 game – which, in
the past, would have been good enough to win. As would the game bowled by the league’s youngest bowler, Chad Reid,
who clocked in with a 346 – setting up a situation for next season to see if the younger crowd can continue to push things
to new heights.
High Triple went to Phil Schmaus with his 749 – an outstanding set of games for Schmaus but not much of a surprise as
he is always hanging around the top of many of the categories in the past. Bill Stumpf, with his 731, and Steve Klatecki,
with his close behind 722 – rounded out the category with more than half a dozen within five or six points behind them.
But High Triple with Handicap went to the smiling Grant Ueberschlag, who parlayed his remarkable high single flat
game into a great set of games, easily topping out with an 877, beating Steve Klatecki’s 860 and Bill Stumpf’s 854.
The overall league standings ended up much different from the previous year, with a rejuvenation of sorts for many
teams:
These teams comprised the A Division:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Grands
Lecturers
Treasurers
Trustees
These teams comprised the B Division:
5.
6.
7.
8.
Guards
Squires
Chancellors
Wardens
These teams comprised the C Division:
9.
10.
11.
12.
Secretaries
Advocates
Knights
Deputies
And, as always, the league is already gearing up for its next season, beginning in September – and in order to do more, it
is open for all newcomers and interested members who would like an enjoyable evening of friendship, fellowship, and the
best entertainment value for a buck. Consider stepping out for the night. If you are interested, you can contact Jamie
Reaume at 519-578-2928 or e-mail [email protected].
Until then – congratulations to all players for last year and to all of the winners, both listed and on all the teams, since
everyone who shows up is always a winner. Right Willy?

OUR EVERYDAY HEROES
We continue to visit the children in 3 areas of the hospital every 2 weeks plus a day.
The areas that we visit are as follows:
▪ The day clinic, where children come to get treatment but do not have to stay overnight
in the hospital — for example, they may have treatment every 3 weeks.
▪ The area where the children can not go home and must stay for an extended period of time, anywhere from a few
days to weeks!
▪ Children and Adolescent In Patient (CAIP), for children and adolescents that have a hard time dealing with the
daily pressures of life. This unit has room for 14 youth and is FULL every time we go to visit. The patients usually
leave after a week of help and therapy. These patients are very happy to see us as we usually bring them large
stuffed animals, or paint supplies or various craft materials. These things are purchased thru donations and certain
events run by the Kitchener Professional Fire Fighter Association (KPFFA).
If you are interested in doing a fund-raiser or donating, please email [email protected] or
[email protected].
We are also looking for volunteers from the Knights of Columbus to take time to visit these children. We visit
starting at 9:30 a.m. and, depending on the number of patients, we are usually done by noon. We try to have 2
members of the Knights with 2 members of the KPFFA visiting. If you wish to volunteer, please email me at
[email protected].
