This year, the Fall 2008 edition exceeded our initial success with more than 70 entries competing for honors in Visual Appeal, Creativity, Elements and Principles of Design Presentation, Retail Application and Consumer Allure. Plus, in recognition of one of our industry’s most important trends, this year’s Competition added a new standard of excellence, Sustainability. This special Awards Book presents those winning showrooms, complete with comments from the designers who created them, plus photographs of our 66 other entries. We hope these exemplary displays offer you a source of fresh inspiration as you seek to engage your customers in the ultimate shopping experience. For years, designers and retailers have known that the High Point Market is the one function that showcases all of the latest forms—and a great place to discover the latest, greatest ideas in home furnishings. The displays presented here are an excellent source of inspiration for you to use in the coming year. When you return to High Point for our Fall 2009 Market, be sure to visit our Showroom Display and Merchandising Ideas Awards Gala, where you can be among the first to see the best of the best for the next season. We hope you enjoy this presentation of leading displays from the Fall 2008 High Point Market, and we would like to thank the all of the exhibitors who entered this competition. As you explore this Awards Book, we invite you to consider the entries that will most appeal to your customers and fit best into your retail concept. Feel free to use the design tips offered here to recreate any of these displays in your store—and of course, you are always welcome to call specific exhibitors for advice on using their products to create a perfect replication. An esteemed panel of editors representing both domestic and international publications served as judges for our 2008 Competition, including Takayoshi Nagashima, The Home Living, Japan; Sylvia Khan, Index Furniture Journal, India; Mark McMenamin, Interior Design; and Sheila Long O’Mara, Home Furnishings Business. Jane Matteson, former executive director of the American Society of Furniture Designers, led the judging. Criteria for each of the categories allowed our judges to apply their knowledge, experience and expertise in selecting the most compelling and well-executed displays: Sustainability was added to the 2008 Competition to promote our industry’s leadership in creating a healthier environment. Entries were judged on aesthetic appeal, as well as the innovative use of technologies and materials to reduce environmental impacts. Visual Appeal sought to identify the display that best captured our judges’ imagination and captivated their interest—the one they just couldn’t help but love. Consumer Allure identifies the display that shows the greatest understanding of current lifestyle, fashion and home decorating trends. Judges considered the use of on-trend colors and design themes, as well as the display of features and functional components that address the way consumers live today. Creativity focused on finding the freshest, newest idea or a display that exhibited a whole new take on a time honored theme—something big and bold that made a sensational splash. Retail Application honors an exceptional display that can easily be reproduced in a retail store. Simplicity, the use of commonly available materials, and the employment of construction and decorating techniques that can be executed easily, were among the primary considerations. Elements and Principles of Design Presentation was our most technical category, with judges giving special recognition to the display that demonstrated an exceptional sense of design in terms of balance, color, proportion, form and other textbook criteria. High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition cisco BrothErs ivan GutiErrEz award of mErit: sustainaBility Rescuing and renovating an all-but-abandoned 100year-old building, Cisco Brothers Furniture honored the inherent beauty of the structure by preserving its original architecture. Staying true to their sustainable philosophy, they reused thousands of pounds of materials salvaged from the site, including stone, brick, wood flooring and steel, to develop an inspiring space that celebrates human creativity and nature. In addition, they are creating home furnishings products from some of the salvaged wood and steel. New technologies add to the showroom’s sustainable design. Reengineered plaster neutralizes VOCs and gassing, and a special zero-VOC sealant was used to maintain the walls and ceilings in their historical condition, sealing any harmful past paints and coatings. Cisco Brothers demonstrates that our journey toward sustainable living goes beyond furniture manufacturing, to embrace the creation of beautiful spaces with natural materials provided by mother earth. 3 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition milEs talBott furniturE JoE ruGGiEro award of mErit: visual appEal Designed to create a compelling and engaging presentation that stimulates conversation and inspires creative interaction between the design staff and customer, this setting from the Joe Ruggiero Collection by Miles Talbott Furniture reinterprets historical references in a context of 21st century design. A bold arrangement of simple elements creates a dramatic yet inviting space, while the neutral color palette provides a refreshing and flexible setting that allows silhouettes and textures to be noticed. The pure lines and timeless colors of this vignette allow it to be easily reproduced or translated into the retail or home environment. In addition, the assemblage of products presented is applicable to a variety of spaces and uses, such as offices, entryways or dining areas. 4 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition amErican lEathEr Garry mErtins award of mErit: consumEr allurE The “Fashion Center” of the American Leather showroom showcases the company’s products as the “jewelry of the home.” The overall layout and individual displays are designed to demonstrate how key furniture pieces can create a positive impact in any room of the home. A combination of neutral toned furnishings, bright accent colors on the walls and in the accessory pillows, as well as accent stitching and other small, eye-catching details bring the space to life via a rich and multilayered sensory experience. The display also shows how furniture from American Leather can fit any home, in any part of the country, by the strategic use of appropriate wall colors and accents. In addition, through the marriage of contemporary and traditional styling, the design shows customers how the addition of new furnishings to an existing décor can create a fresh and reinvigorated interior. 5 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition lExinGton homE Brands linda KinG award of mErit: crEativity Known for creating outstanding showroom presentations, Lexington Home Brands topped even its own high standards with this sophisticated and stunning display. Always intent on making a strong statement for each of its brands and collections, the company designs each group to tell a story that gives form to the consumer’s dreams, inspiring her to create her own story in her home. In presenting their lifestyle collections, Lexington Home Brand’s designers work to showcase the products in a setting that fits each lifestyle. This display was created for Barclay Square, a smartly chic collection that offers a cultured approach to modern living. To tell its story, they constructed a New York Brownstone in the first level of the showroom, bringing the traditional terraced building to life with a three-story façade. 6 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition dEllaroBia KarEl mcKinnEy award of mErit: rEtail application Accepting the challenge to bring cutting edge design to the consumer, dressed in a sellable palette, Dellarobia shops the world for the finest fabrics and then expands the aesthetic appeal into categories such as casegoods, area rugs, pillows and art. Crafted to inspire design dialog while romancing the art and luxury of today’s finest textiles and area rugs, the Dellarobbia lounge presents a harmonious blend of shape, color and pattern. The key to the concept, however, is color flow – using the palette to pull the observer through the space, from group to group, rather than bouncing the eye from one color palette to another. A pure design concept that is applicable to any environment, this approach works well whether the retailer’s palette is comprised of soft, classic neutrals, bold, avant garde hues, or any other segment of the color spectrum. 7 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition rEvco intErnational GrEG o’nEal award of mErit: ElEmEnts and principlEs of dEsiGn Minimalist, yet warm and emotionally compelling, this display evokes the softness, comfort and calm associated with the lifestyle trend toward “nesting.” Created to appeal to a broad consumer base while giving the customer design direction, the space shows how to enliven today’s best-selling natural brown wood tones. Merchandised with purist colors and textures: creams, whites, blues, mirror and glass, basic brown becomes hip, cool, current and universal. Attention to detail expands the sensory experience and enhances the appeal. Colored beverages highlight the chromatic direction of the display. A variety of chocolates excite the senses of sight and taste. Flowers, displayed in simple containers, create additional splashes of visual impact. In this Revco International display, all of the elements work together to form an engaging experience that communicates a deliciously desirable lifestyle. 8 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition othEr Entrants: aJp dEsiGn systEms, inc. allstatE flora & craft, inc. 9 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition arin intErnational artEriors homE 10 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition artitalia Group austin 11 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition BailEy strEEt Bdi 12 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition BEllE mEadE siGnaturE BoliEr & company 13 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition thE BradBurn company Broyhill furniturE 14 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition capEl ruGs carson and company 15 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition cEntury furniturE chElsEa housE 16 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition clayton marcus clayton oxford dEsiGns 17 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition covEt ctc chicaGo tExtilE corp 18 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition dB sourcEs duralEE 19 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition EKornEs fEizy ruGs 20 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition four hands frEmarc dEsiGns 21 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition frEnch hEritaGE furniturE classics ltd 22 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition G & J stylEs GloBal viEws 23 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition GuildmastEr haBErsham 24 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition hautE housE homE furnishinG homE trEnds & dEsiGn 25 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition iBolili John dErian furniturE - ca Boom 26 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition Ku amBiancE - ca Boom thE lam lEE Group 27 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition lEGacy classic furniturE macKEnziE-dow finE furniturE 28 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition maitland-smith palEcEK 29 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition paraGon pataGonia tradinG company 30 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition thE phillips collEction powEll company 31 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition thE provEncE collEction rEd EGG 32 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition rEGina-andrEw dEsiGn rosEnBaum finE art 33 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition rowE finE furniturE, inc. samuElson furniturE, inc. 34 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition sElamat dEsiGns shinE homE 35 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition sliGh furniturE sports homE lifEstylE 36 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition standard furniturE stErlinG industriEs 37 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition tomlinson / Erwin-lamBEth thrEE hands corporation 38 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition urBan woods vauGhan furniturE 39 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition woodson & rummErfEld’s housE of dEsiGn 40 High Point Market 2008 Showroom Competition
