Rabbi's Reflections
Facts and Truths
All year we are studying the content
of the Torah in many ways: ongoing
classes, shorter or even singlesession units, brief discussions after
morning or evening services and
here, in my monthly article. In
previous articles, I described the
content of the five books of the
Torah; this month I will take a step
back from the details of the Torah’s
books to address general issues of faith
rooted in those books. As Conservative Jews,
we are in the unique position of embracing the
sanctity of the Torah without insisting on its
divinity (more on that below) and insisting that
Torah is at the center of our beliefs and
behaviors, despite our knowledge about its
origins.
We now know a great deal about the Torah
and its constituent parts. A century and a half
of scholarship has shown in many ways that
the Torah is a composite document, created
over centuries in a kind of rolling
amalgamation of Jewish law codes, origin
stories,
fable,
poetry,
and
covenant
agreements.
Drawing
on
comparative
linguistics, archeology, literary theory, and
historical records from before, during and after
the time of Moses, dozens of biblical scholars
have proven beyond doubt that the Torah was
not, as a historical matter, handed by God to
Moses on Sinai as a single, integrated work.
While that may be a surprise to some, it is
actually quite old news. But what is important
is not the facts of the Torah’s construction, but
rather its truths. We can feel perfectly
comfortable with the idea that the Torah is not
divine, i.e. originating in its present form,
complete from God, because the question of
origins obscures the more crucial question of
status. To put it bluntly: The Torah is sacred
not because it came from God, but because
we act as if it comes from God. What confers
sanctity on the Torah is not where it comes
from, but how the Jewish people have lived in
light of its words and values. For thousands of
The Word –April 2015
years, Jews have read the Torah’s
accounts of Abraham, Isaac and
Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and
Leah, Moses, Aaron and Miriam as
the blueprint for what it means to
relate to God and the world. Their
stories have taught us who to be
and how to be. No matter how much
we learn about the historical origins
of their stories, we will continue to
see them as our ancestors and ourselves as
their descendants, as the inheritors of their
values and traditions. Abraham’s faith,
Sarah’s laughter, Jacob’s cunning, Moses’
unyielding leadership, and a hundred similar
traits are truths that created Judaism and
continue to create us as Jews. Insisting that
their stories must also be factual seems a bit
small minded, and in some ways entirely
beside the point.
Conservative Judaism insists on getting the
facts right, not only as a matter of intellectual
integrity, but out of a religious commitment to
live up to the intelligence God has given us.
Denying facts cannot honor our sacred texts;
using facts to deny truths likewise
impoverishes us. We love Torah and will
continue to study it daily during this Shanah
Torah (Year of Learning) because it will
always be the first source of our identity as
Jews. But facts are not truths, and Pesakh
serves as a good illustration of the difference:
There is no evidence outside the Torah that
the exodus took place the way it is described
in the Torah. But as we all sit down to seder
this week, we seek not mere facts, but the
truths of being a redeemed people. We yearn
for sacred connections that make our lives
worth living. We ache for meaning through
food, symbol, and shared experience. May we
each find them this year as we continue to
learn the facts as well as the truths of Torah.
Hag same’akh,
Rabbi Jeff Pivo

GUEST SPEAKER
SAM HARRIS
We are fortunate to have Sam Harris, President
Emeritus of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and
Educational Center, as speaker and honoree.
Sam (Sammy – Szlamek Rzeznik) is one of the youngest survivors of the
concentration camps during the Holocaust. Born in Deblin, Poland, in 1935, he was
just four years old when the war broke out in his town. Having lost his parents and
most of his family during the Holocaust, Sam hid, from the ages of seven to nineanda- half, in two concentration camps: Deblin and Czestochowa. Although an
orphan when he arrived in the USA at the age of twelve, Sam was filled with hope
about the possibilities awaiting him. Through the Jewish Children’s Bureau in
Chicago, Sam was adopted by Dr. Ellis and Mrs. Harriet Harris of Northbrook.

EDUCATION
This year we celebrate Israel’s 67 th anniversary on April 23 rd. Israel is a country thriving with
people, technology, and much more! Israeli cuisine exemplifies the true melting pot that is
Israel. Hailing from over 80 countries, Jews have returned to their ancient land, bringing with
them the foods and recipes they developed during their wanderings. These traditions have
commingled with other Jewish recipes, Jewish dietary laws, and the native ingredients of the
Land of Israel to create a dynamic cuisine.
“When you’re eating in Israel, all your senses are involved. You can smell it and see it being made. Food here
[Israel] really overwhelms the senses, but in a great way,” says Inbal Baum, culinary tour guide from Delicious
Israel. Baum helped ISRAEL21c create this list of 10 extraordinary dishes you need to try next time you’re in
Israel.
10 Extraordinary Tastes from Israel
1. Zalatimo’s mutabak: Zalatimo’s Bakery in the Old City of Jerusalem is the oldest
operating baklava bakery in the world. It is hailed by everyone as “the” place to bite into
a warm, hand-thrown wad of filo dough soaked in sugar syrup. Zalatimo calls its pastries
“mutabak” but everyone else calls them Zalatimos.
2. Benny’s Soda: At Benny’s Soda (Gazoz, in Hebrew), the artisanal soda-shop wizard
Benny Briga uses all-natural flavors to create original flavored bubbly drinks. This thirstquenching master adds wedges of fruits (lemon, pomegranate, guava), herbs (lavender,
lemongrass, lemon verbena), and roots (ginger) to fizzy non-alcoholic cocktails.
3. Ika’s Chocolate: Chocoholics will be delighted to know that the culture of chocolate in
Israel continues to flourish. Judges at the 2012 International Chocolate Awards
competition swooned over a lemon praline handcrafted by Tel Aviv chocolatier Ika
Cohen. She returned to the Italian contest with a gold medal-winning Za’atar Ganache
in 2014. Ika continues to appear on international “’best chocolate shops” lists as well.
4. Albert’s marzipan: The official Marzipan Museum may be located in Kfar Tavor in the
Lower Galilee, but true aficionados of this sweet nutty treat know that Albert
Confectionery in South Tel Aviv is the place to get it in Israel. The small pastry shop
doesn’t look like much, but the secret family recipes for this almond candy dough
handed down through the generations is the reason people queue up here.
5. Pomegranate wine and beer: Pomegranates are packed with vitamins, anti-oxidants
and other health benefits. Israeli scientists have improved the pomegranate’s genetic
makeup and Israeli entrepreneurs have innovated new ruby-red tastes such as
pomegranate wines and beers. Rimon Winery is the best known for its premium highend pomegranate wines in about a dozen varieties.
6. Eli Mamman’s Halva: Halva can be bought at markets, stores and gourmet shops
throughout Israel. But the main go-to place for this sesame-paste candy is Halva
Kingdom in Jerusalem’s Machane Yehuda market.
The Word - April 2015
11
EDUCATION
7. Leon’s bourekas: Bourekas are also ubiquitous in Israel, and everyone has a favorite
Turkish/Bulgarian bourekas place. Leon and Sons bakery in Jaffa is a three-generation
family business known far and wide for its delicious flaky filo offerings made without
margarine.
8. Specialty sandwiches: Falafel and shawarma joints abound, but extraordinary bites can
best be found in the multicultural specialty sandwich shops in every town and city
across the land. In Ramle, take your growling tummy over to HaTunisay Shel Eli for a
Tunisian Fricassee; in Givatayim, head over to HaSabich Shel Ovad for the most famous
Jewish Iraqi breakfast sandwich in Israel; and in Jerusalem, Chochi’s Sandwich
reportedly serves up the best schnitzel sandwich in Israel.
9. Abu Salem’s tea: When strolling through the shuk (market) in the Old City of
Nazareth, follow your nose to Abu Salem’s Coffee House just off the main street,
down an alleyway. While the home brew is good, the real reason to stop here is for
the nut-infused cinnamon tea. The café is a second home for many of the city’s
elders, who come to play backgammon all day long and drink the otherworldly hot
beverages on the menu.
10. Viznich’s challah: The ultimate place to buy fresh challah is a matter of opinion.
But there’s no denying the extraordinary experience of a visit to Viznich Bakery in
Bnei Brak on a Thursday night or Friday morning as these white braided loaves of
soft goodness are snatched up as they come out of the ovens. You’ll know you’ve
arrived at the correct location by the dizzying smell of freshly baked challahs and
the ever-growing lines of people, both secular and religious, waiting to buy them.

USY (BJUSY) (8th-12th grade)
Wow, where the time has gone. I can’t believe it is April already. As the snow is melting on the ground (finally),
things are really heating up in our youth department. February and March brought us a great Midwinter
convention and Weekend of Greatness trip. We learned how to bake challah (thanks to Dr. Ira Sender), how to
make hamentaschen (thanks, Mrs. Natalie Gurin), and had a great Purim weekend. A huge thank you goes out
to the entire congregation for allyour support over Purim weekend. Between the Purim Carnival and the
Megillah, reading we raised over $1,350 for USY’s official charity, Tikun Olam. I would like to send a special
thank you to all of the youth committee members who helped out at the Purim Carnival; the program would not
have been successful without you. Of course the biggest credit goes out to all of our dedicated USY and
Kadima volunteers who put in over 20 hours of community service creating and painting new games, setting up
and running the games, and cleaning up afterwards (even when they were very tired). Thank you, thank you,
thank you to all!!!
On March 21st we hosted the CHUSY prom at Congregation Beth Judea. What a great event. A huge mazel
tov to Sarah Heiger for coordinating this first ever event.
Kinnus is coming April 24-26; be sure you are registered.

HUMASH w/RASHI
Judaism 201: `What’s Bugging Rashi?’ (Rabbi Pivo)
Tuesday Evenings at 8:00 pm begins Nov. 4, 2014 -May
For nearly a thousand years, Jews have understood the
Torah through the eyes of Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki, or Rashi.
His commentary has been the indispensable source for
beginners and expert students alike to understand Torah.
Rashi’s brief, clear comments are the best starting point for
an in-depth study of our most vital texts. The course is
open to all but with advanced students in mind; we will use
the Hebrew text as much as possible.
TASTE OF TORAH: *(see note below)
Sweet Taste of Torah: Kohelet & Song of Songs
Wednesday evenings at 8 pm
For thousands of years, Judaism has been interpreting and
applying the Torah to everyday life. This class follows the
Tanach cycle. Each week we will read through several
chapters a week of the Nevim (Prophets) texts, then on to
Ketuvim (Writings), then back to Torah again.
Starting Wednesday evening April 1, 2015 the
Wednesday Evening Torah study group will begin a new
book of torah: Song of Songs/Shir HaShirim. This book is a
traditionally a book associated with both Shabbat and
Pesach. It is one of the more intriguing books of Torah with
its romantic and sexual content and has often been
allegorically interpreted as that of a deep I Thou relationship
between God and Israel.
Parsha Perspectives
Thursday evenings after minyan (7:45—8:00 pm)
Do you have 10 minutes to spare? It only takes 10
minutes to get started on a lifelong journey. Spend each
Thursday after Minyan learning about the upcoming Parsha
with Rabbi Pivo, and before you know it you'll have
completed hours of Torah study.
PARSHA OF THE WEEK
Shabbat Torah/Haftarah Study
Shabbat morning at 9 am
Join a study/discussion of the week’s parsha. We will
discuss questions raised by the participants.

Sisterhood Update - April 2015
Happy spring! After a grueling winter, we are
busily preparing for the eight days of Passover,
the most celebrated of our Jewish holidays and
one of the most beautiful. Thank you so very much
to all you who said "yes" and did not "pass over"
the opportunity to:

Support the Purim Masquerade Ball which
was so successful and so much fun.
Congratulations to the Purim Masquerade
Ball committee for an outstanding job and to
Mitch and Ann Lerman for being such a

to the Mishloach Manot committee for a job
well done and excellent hamentaschen.
Help make the Women's Seder such a
delightful evening. We had a traditional

Jewish Elderly's Senior Life and got to enjoy
each other's company.

8:00 pm
Envision being a young Jewish woman in
Frankfurt Germany on Rosh Hashanah 1945 and
walking with other G.I’s to the rededication of the
only standing synagogue.
This is a powerful coming -of-age story of Lena, a
young Russian Jew whose family flees their homeland
in the Ukraine during the October Revolution. It is set
in Chicago during the Jazz Age of the 1920s.
Cyndee Schaffer, co-author and daughter of Mollie
Weinstein Schaffer will be at Beth Judea to discuss
Mollie’s War
a story woven around the collection of letters that
Mollie wrote home to her family during WWII
candidly sharing everything from daily challenges to
exciting experiences.
It is a moving story of family, self-discovery, young
love & the always relevant experience of the immigrant,
the refugee, and the outsider struggling to create a new
home & better life in an unfamiliar place.

Men’s Club
The Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs is
committed to improving the health of our
members. We recognize that many in our
synagogue community have unhealthy
lifestyles that put them at increased risk for
various types of preventable, and possibly life
threatening, illnesses. Quitting
smoking, eating a healthy diet,
increasing
exercise,
losing
weight, and managing stress are
all factors that may help prevent
such conditions as diabetes,
heart disease, stroke, and
certain types of cancer.
As
part of our commitment to meet
this challenge, Men’s Club
sponsored a quitting smoking
session through hypnosis late
last year. At our recent retreat in
February we also included a
stretching
and
exercise
program. This spring we plan to
start
a
walking
program
following
Sunday
morning
minyan (weather permitting.)
These programs are designed
to help achieve the goal of
improving the health of all of our
members.
We also however, like to have
fun. Men’s Club will sponsor a
Craft Beer and Burger Dinner at
Congregation Beth Judea on
Sunday April 26. We plan to have a craft beer
expert teach us the fine points of craft beers.
In addition to having the opportunity to taste
various craft beers, we will enjoy a dinner of
grilled gourmet kosher hamburgers. More
information about this evening will be
available soon.
On a more somber note, April 15-16 is Yom
Hashoah. By now most of the members of
Congregation Beth Judea should have
received the Yellow Yom Hashoah Candles.
Men’s Club distributes these candles to the
members of Beth Judea every year. The
Yellow candles were created in 1981 to keep
the memory of the Six Million alive. It is
The Word - April 2015
modeled after a traditional yahrzeit candle
used on the death anniversary of a family
member. The photo on the candle shows a
group of young people visiting AushwitzBirkenau. This reflects the importance of
teaching our youth the lessons of the
Holocaust. The program
logo is a yellow Magen
David (Jewish Star) with
barbed wire around the
word “Jude,” reminiscent of
the armband patch worn in
the ghetto. The candle’s
yellow wax also reminds us
of the patch. Your donations
will help offset the cost of
this program.
Congregation Beth Judea is
a sponsor of the communal
Yom Hashoah program held
this year at Temple Chai on
April 15 at 7 PM. Please
plan to attend.
Yasher koach to Louis
Rabin for coordinating the
recent Men’s Club Shabbat.
One of the goals of Men’s
Club Shabbat is to get as
many men as possible to
participate in the service.
Thanks to all of you who
participated in the service.
Thank you to David Granoff for his help in
arranging the Passover Wine tasting, which
was cosponsored by Sisterhood.

SHALVA
“Its okay, the children aren’t effected”
But what if you knew they were?
Shalva clients will often say that they can
withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he
never directs his anger toward their children.
What many women don’t understand is that
children are the silent victims of abuse and
that they often repeat the behaviors they have
seen.
According to a recent study, over 90% of
children are aware of domestic abuse in their
home. These children are affected
emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They
are at great risk and often experience low selfesteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust
adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression
and anxiety.
What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse
is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire
family as well as our Jewish community.
SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish
women who are or were in an intimate partner
relationship. If you or someone you know
needs our help, call 773-583-4673.
We Would Like To Know
WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . .
If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as
a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would
like to know about it so that this milestone can
be included in The Word.
If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we
would like to know about it so that a prayer for
recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call
or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring)
committee can be notified and be of assistance.
If there is a death in your family, we would
like to know about it so that we can offer our
support, can share this information with our
congregation, and so that we can add your
loved one to our Yahrzeit records.
Please call the synagogue office with this
information. Do not assume that someone else
will have notified the synagogue staff.

From The Editors
In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue
by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well.
We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing.
Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions
expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
