V o l. 2 3 N O. 5 May 2015 ROGUE RAMBLINGS A PUBLICATION OF HENRY’S LADY CHAPTER MODEL A FORD CLUB AN OREGON N ON OF A MERICA -PROFIT CORPORATION PO BOX 1442 GRANTS PASS, OR 97528 Rogue Valley History By Guest Editor Rick Black I offered to temporarily take over the newsletter editor duties from Mac while he is dealing with Teri’s health issues, so I needed to come up with an article for our front page. We usually feature members’ cars, but I don’t have a volunteer for this month, so I thought I’d share some things I’ve found out volunteering at the Southern Oregon Historical Society. My duties at SOHS involve scanning photographs and researching Society member requests. During those research sessions, I’ve stumbled onto some very interesting Ford history. The first Ford dealer in Southern Oregon was Charles E. “Pop” Gates, who got the franchise in about 1912. He rented space in the Sparta Building on the corner of Hwy 99 and Main (today’s North Riverside and East Main) and started selling Model T Fords. Business was good—Medford had more cars per capita than any city in Oregon at that time. By 1922, Gates bought some property at 41 N. Riverside at 6th, built a new building and moved his operation there. A few weeks ago, I was sorting through photographs at the SOHS library and stumbled across this one, taken in 1922. It’s hard for me to tell if this was at the new Gates Ford building or in the old Sparta Building. In the photo, Auto Assembly worker Herman Pence is assembling a newly arrived Model T (which were shipped partially broken down to fit more Model Ts in each freight car.) Herman could assemble 3 cars per day if he wasn’t interrupted. His pay was $5 each. You guys welcomed me with open arms when I joined and made me feel like I had been a member forever. The next thing I knew, I was Treasurer then Vice President, President and Newsletter Editor and Coffee Maker. The only elected office I haven’t held is Secretary and I am really glad that the ladies of the club have kept that position filled. Having to step back from some of the things I’ve been doing for a while has been as hard as taking them on in the first place. I’m talking about the Newsletter now. When I started doing that I didn’t know which end was up and I worked through it with the help of Nancy Firth and Rick Black. Now, in my hour of need, both of them have once again stepped up and Rogue Ramblings is still coming to you. Rick will be taking over the Editors job and Nancy will be taking care of distribution. The core membership of this club is really something. When bad stuff happens things still get done. I hope all of you remember that when the next election comes up at the end of the year. Newsletter Editor Bill MacDougall 541-582-0374 [email protected] Tour Coordinator Dave Williams 541-479-7580 [email protected] The tour to “Art the Hat Guy” in Medford last month was a rousing success. OUR MAY TOUR After our meeting Saturday, May 9, we have planned a tour to the Illinois Valley for lunch at Taylor's Country Store and a visit to the Siskiyou Smokejumper Base Museum a few miles south of Cave Junction. Here is a link to their website so you can see what they are all about: http://www.siskiyousmokejumpermuseum.org/ You can also read what others have to say about the tour on the Trip Advisor website here: http://tinyurl.com/qhb5hw2 There is no admission fee but donations are gladly accepted to help with their restoration efforts. Please reply to this message or call the Firths (541-474-1516) in the next few days if you are planning to attend. We hope you will plan to join us to learn about this unique piece of southern Oregon history. You won't be disappointed. It looks like the weather will be warm and dry so drive your Model A if you can! Rogue Ramblings May, 2015 Page 5 Locating All Those Great Articles in The Restorer Magazine Many MAFCA members have years of The Restorer magazine, each issue filled with great articles, photos, and how-to instructions on many facets of Model A restoration. The frustrating thing for me is remembering that I read a great article in an issue but not remembering in which issue it was located. From time to time, MAFCA has published indexes of The Restorer. The problem for me is that it's hard to go through an handful of indexes when you're not even sure what the exact title was. Well, to paraphrase a current technical phrase, "there's an app for that." Actually, an electronic index of The Restorer magazines is on the MAFCA website. That index is in PDF form, which means you can download it to your computer and then use the FIND feature of the PDF reader program on your computer (Adobe Reader for Windows, Preview for Mac) to find a title, a subject or an author or contributor. The index file you're looking for is called RINDEX (Restorer INDEX). The first one you'll probably find is called RINDEX50 – an index to the first 50 years of The Restorer . There are others as well for Volume 51 – the current Volume 59. Download one or all of them and then when you need to look up an article, search through those indexes to find the Volume/Number and/or Issue Date of the magazine. Even the page number(s) of the articles are listed. Where is this located on the MAFCA website? You can find the link on The Restorer page (click on The Restorer magazine image on the home page) – it will tell you the indexes are in the Downloads folder under Indexes. If you feel like typing, here is the exact link: www.mafca.com/ref_downloads.html That page explains what things are in the Downloads folder and has links to them. You'll notice that there are also indexes to the "How To Restore Your Model A" series, so if you have those 9 volumes, there's an index for them as well. Happy Hunting! Rogue Ramblings May, 2015 Page 9 2015 MAFCA National Awards Banquet Each December, MAFCA has its annual Awards Banquet in different locations around the USA, hosted by a local chapter. Last year, MAFCA asked us if we’d like to host a NAB event. After consulting with Rogue Valley A’s and Sis-Q A’s, representatives from those three MAFCA chapters decided to ask their chapters if they wanted to participate. Each chapter agreed. A committee was formed with representatives from the three local chapters, and we’ve been meeting for the past year to put a program together. We have just submitted our plan to the MAFCA board for their approval. We will be asking all of our chapter members to give us a hand before and during the event, which takes place Wednesday December 2 through Saturday December 5. We hope that you’ll step up and help us when the time comes. Once MAFCA approves our plan, details will be posted on our website and in the July/August Restorer magazine.
