As I look out the window, or better yet go out of doors, I marvel at the beauty around us in this beautiful valley. The sun is
shining and becoming warmer, the days are getting longer, the grass is turning green, the dandelions are flowering. The
trees are beginning to bud and leaf out. People are excited to get out of doors and plant something.
Do we ever stop and say thanks for the beauty around us?
Genesis 1: says to us “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and
empty darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
God said, “Let there be light and there was light. God saw that the light was good and he separated the light from the
darkness. God called the light “day” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning,
the first day.”
Gen. 1:11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit
with seed in it, according to their various kinds. And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed
according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And
there was evening and there was morning, the third day.”
As we read on we see all that God created in a total of six days.
Genesis 1: 31 concludes this chapter with “God saw all he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening,
and there was morning—the sixth day.” (The NIV Study Bible)
Look out your window at the tall evergreens with the mountain peaks behind the trees. We know we are at a high
elevation as there is still snow on those mountain peaks. Walk down to the creek, stop and listen to the gurgling water as
it goes over the rocks. Enjoy how very clear the water is. Enjoy the deer and other animals that wander through our area.
God has given all this beauty to us for us to enjoy. Let us make a point of treating it with great respect. I find people
often use the streets and sidewalks as garbage containers. This is so very unnecessary. Put your empty bar wrapper or
pop can in your pocket until you come to one of the many garbage cans that are around the community. If what you want
to dispose of can be recycled, take it home or to the recycling bins. There is no reason for our community to become
littered with garbage. Let all of us begin doing our part. Enjoy the beautiful outdoors that God created and help us do our
part at keeping it clean.
Blessings

Q & A - ELKFORD LADIES RUNNING
CLUB
In the past few weeks you may have seen a group of
women running the streets of Elkford once a week, and
wondered what they were running from! Recently Elkford
resident, Vanessa Smith, has started up two running
groups that meet every week. Even if you aren’t a runner,
here are a few details about these new fitness groups you
might find interesting.
Q. What kind of running groups are there?
A. There are two groups that take place over 7 weeks.
One is “Learn to Run a 5 km” which is geared towards
learning the basics with the goal of running or walk/running
a 5 km route. The other group is for “Distance Training”,
perfect for women who can currently run 5-8 km
comfortably and are looking to push past the 10 km
barrier.
Q. How many members currently participate?
A. There are 14 people registered for the 5 km—a
fantastic number! There are even 4 women who travel
from Sparwood each week to participate, as well as 2
people who are regular drop-ins. The distance training
currently has 4 ladies signed up, but it is anticipated that
some of the 5 km ladies will join in the next round.
Q. How can someone join? When do you meet?
A. These programs are run through the District of Elkford
Rec. Department. You can contact them for registration
information. The programs right now are nearly finished,
but I will be running 2 more groups in July/August in
preparation for a couple of local races that we can sign up
for together as a group. One 5 km group again and a 1/2
marathon training group! We meet every Thursday, from
April 16 to May 28. The 5 km group is from 6 pm to 7 pm,
and the distance group is from 7 pm to 8:30 pm. We start
at the Rec. Centre parking lot near the doors, and follow a
pre-determined route depending on what the goal is for
that night.
Q. What would you say to someone unsure of joining
the group due to their abilities?
A. These are totally fun, light groups with tons of laughter
and growth. Everyone starts at their own pace and as their
skills develop they can move on when comfortable. By
doing this, I really found this plan worked for everyone to
be successful in accomplishing their own personal goals,
all in a supportive environment. We started our own
private running group Facebook Message, and each week
I email out the following Thursday’s plan. It is expected
that everyone will run once without me and use the new
info, or give and share helpful suggestions and support
each other! Weekly topics include stretching, hydration,
nutrition, posture, speed—getting faster, stamina—
increasing distance, hill training, mental barriers, and injury
prevention and identification.
Q. Anything you’d like to add?
A. I have thoroughly enjoyed these groups! For me I could
never have predicted how much enjoyment I would get out
of sharing my love for running with others weekly, and
watching each person grow in strength and determination.
Looking forward to seeing everyone out on the trails/
running routes!

Elkford Youth Ambassadors
The Elkford Youth Ambassador program instils selfconfidence, positive thinking, and leadership among young
individuals in our community.
During the past year we have represented Elkford at
various events in different communities as well as
“pageants” across the province. We’ve had the privilege of
attending numerous parades and events such as
Coalminer Days in Sparwood, Whoop Up Days in
Lethbridge, Pincher Creek Rodeo Days, and Wildcat Days
and Winter in the Wild here in Elkford.
Over the course of our reign, we have travelled to
numerous towns across British Columbia and attended
“pageants” of other youth ambassador programs such as
Cranbrook, Kamloops, Peachland, Nanaimo, Summerland,
Trail, and New Denver. This has given us tremendous
opportunities to create lifelong friendships and learn more
about British Columbia. Through this, we have been able
to promote Elkford in a positive way across the province,
and educate people about our lovely little town.
We have also enjoyed taking part in many local
events. At Wildcat Days, we were given the privilege of
judging the parade floats, followed by our own participation
in the parade.
On Canada Day, we helped at the barbeque alongside
the Elk Valley Air Cadets. In November, we attended the
Remembrance Day church service, procession, and
ceremony at the Cenotaph. We had fun at the Moonlight
Madness Christmas Craft Fair, where we got to appreciate
the talented people we have in town. During Winter in the
Wild, we socialized with members of our community at the
bonfire and fireworks, and danced the night away at the
Playschool dance. We visited the playschool for
“Superhero and Princess Day” where we made crafts and
played with the kids. Finally, we attended the last Sparks
meeting and made crown picture frames.
Overall we have had an amazing year and are sorry to
see that it is almost over. Although there were not enough
candidates to run a 2015 program, we hope to see the
program continue as we would love to remain a part of it.

Helpful T I P S to Keep Your Child Smiling
Two times a day brushing using a
‘pea-size’ or just a
smear of fluoride toothpaste is recommended to reduce
the chance of tooth decay. Allow your child some
independence when brushing with some parental
supervision and assistance. Did you know that you
should be helping your child brush their teeth until they
are 8 years old, or until your child can write their name? If
they cannot write their name they haven’t developed
suitable hand movements to remove the plaque from
their teeth. The best times to brush are after breakfast
and after the last meal/snack of the day. Ensure you lift
your child’s lip and have a good look at their teeth. If you
see any white or brown spots on their teeth, you should
contact your dentist or your local public dental health
centre.
In-between
cleaning the teeth using
floss is very important as this is a
common place for food and plaque to
get stuck. Helping your child floss at
least once a day helps decrease the
risk of developing tooth decay inbetween the teeth. Floss sticks or
waxed string floss can be used.
Primary teeth or ‘baby teeth’ guide the permanent teeth
‘adult teeth’ to come in. Baby teeth are just as important
to keep healthy and free from tooth decay as the adult
teeth. It is recommended that your child see a dentist six
months after their first baby tooth comes in or about the
age of 1. It is best to have your child visit the dentist
before they have tooth pain or a dental problem. If you
require financial assistance for your child’s dental care,
please contact your local dental public health program for
possible options. Your child should have all of their baby
teeth by the age of 3. Their adult teeth start to come in
around age 6 and continue until the age of 21.
Sealants can help prevent tooth decay in back teeth that
have deep pits and grooves which trap food and plaque.
The sealant provides a smoother tooth surface making
the tooth easier to keep plaque-free. Sealants are
performed in dental offices and are an inexpensive and a
practical preventive treatment.

Celebrating 40 years of
library service to Elkford!
Community Partnerships
Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL)
Breastfeeding Mamas
Kootenay Library Federation
This year the Elkford Public Library
celebrated our 40th Anniversary. This was
an opportunity to look back on our
accomplishments, to reflect on the changes
and improvements in the services that we
provide to our community, and to look
forward to incorporating the newest
technologies and developing the skills
required to complement our core services in
the future.
We celebrated our 40th Anniversary with an
Open House. Mayor Dean McKerracher
graciously gave a speech on the importance
of the Elkford Public Library to our
community. In February we had a wonderful
display that showed our history and growth
with Elkford as well as having several
contests to involve the public in
remembering the past 40 years.

Programs for the Whole Family
Story Time: This is a fun program that introduces 3-5 year old
children to reading. In between stories they have fun playing games
and singing. There were two sessions of Story Time, one from
January to March and one October to December.
Summer Reading Club: 2014
saw continuing success for the
Summer Reading Club in
Elkford as it attracts more
children each year. There was a 36% increase in
attendance over the previous year. The theme for this year
was “Funny Business” and had everyone in stitches. The
children enjoy the mix of games, crafts, outings and
reading.
Some of the highlights this year were a visit to the local community garden, a scavenger hunt in the
community campground, and a demonstration of a 3D printer. We are pleased with the support that
our community provides for this program, from funding, to people sharing their interests and expertise.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help. Thanks especially to the Elkford Lions Club for
providing funding for this program.
Youth Book Club: a program for teens that allows them to read and discuss books with other
teens. This year there were winter and fall sessions. The books included “Raven Boy” by
Maggie Stiefvater, “Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, “The Adventures
of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain among others chosen by the group. All the members were
excited to read the books and to challenge themselves to read materials that they might not have
otherwise chosen to try.
Student Volunteer Program: One of the library staff’s favourite programs is working with student
volunteers. We have three students who come in once a week to work in the library. Their jobs
included signing out books, preparing books for interlibrary loans, shelving books and various other
jobs that crop up from week to week. It is wonderful to have their energy and enthusiasm. Their
volunteer time counts toward their graduation credit.
Workshops: In 2014, the Elkford Public Library was able to put on five varied workshops. They
included a “Gluten Free—Facts and Fads,” presented by Lisa Samycia, Registered Dietitian from
Interior Health, “Beginner Fly Tying,” with Chris Wells and a demonstration of a 3D printer by Chris
Van Mills of Protodrake, Lethbridge. Two workshops put on by Sparwood Chiropractic helped us to
Move Well and improve our feet with orthotics.
We’d especially like to thank our presenters.
These seminars would not be possible without
them.

Quick Stats
Last year Elkford library staff handled over 1100 interlibrary loans. We now have Kootenay Connect
which makes ordering interlibrary loans as simple as putting a book on hold. The new system has
created an increase of 47% of books lent out to other libraries over last year.
We had a 15% increase in the number of registered children over last year and a 9% increase of
registered adults
Our eBook and eAudio book lending has more than doubled since 2012. Yes, there is a place to go to
download free eBooks. Contact the Elkford Public Library to find out how.
Staff saw an increase in the use of the Wifi services. This is likely due to the increased broadband
speed from updating our service.
