Art in Elkford
Elkford was a new stop on the Columbia Basin Culture
Tour, August 9th and 10th, with two great opportunities
to see local artists and their studios. Katherine Russell’s
studio was open with blown and kiln-formed glass. She
is offering various courses this fall.
The other venue was The Elkford Art Studio. They
hosted a group of artists’ work upstairs in the Rec.
Centre. This community studio has been running less
than 2 years and started with minimal equipment, and
shared a kiln with the local high school. They have
received many grants and donations thanks to the hard
work and dedication of the members. The funds have
been used to purchase more wheels, a slab roller and a
kiln.
Debbie Macrae and Barb Filipe show some of their artwork.
For the CBT tour various local artists had their art on
display with information about the pottery process and
painting skills. Artists and students were on hand giving
demonstrations in clay work and the potter’s wheel. With
many visitors taking advantage of the tour opportunity, the
weekend opening was a success. All were impressed with
the talent and enthusiasm of the space. Everyone is
welcome to participate in upcoming fall courses to be
offered at the Elkford Art Studio. Look for classes in
drawing, painting, hand-built and wheel-work pottery,
photography, and children’s classes.

Welcome to the end of summer. I know many of you may be saying, “Oh, but summer was too short!
Now, I have to get back to school! Is it time to start having more order in our lives again?”
I am no different than anyone else, I love having less routine, but it is positive for only a short
period of time. In every year, in every life, there are seasons.
In Genesis 1:14 we read “Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to
divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and let them be for days and
years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth and it was
so.”
Psalm 1:3 is a verse that tells us about a person who is following the rules of nature and God. We
read “He (meaning you and I) shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth fruit
in its season. Whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.”
These are encouraging words as we look forward to a new season in our year. For myself I know
I am to follow a more definite routine: exercising, studying, visiting, and also taking down time to
relax. For myself and many other people I know, we forget to relax and rest. Oh, we may be sitting
down and watching TV or relaxing with a good fiction. Then all of a sudden that phone beside us
buzzes—immediately we are in high alert! It may be a funny joke sent to us, or it may be a friend
calling to say hello. All good things, and yet our bodies have responded often in an alarm mode.
Why? I believe we have allowed ourselves to think we need to be all things to all people all the time.
No where can we find any book, even the Bible, to tell us that!
Each of us has responsibilities, but we also need to learn to let go and let God deal with people,
even those that are part of our family or circle of friends.
My challenge for all of us as this new season begins is this, “every day I will do what I know I
need to do, but not to the point that I am running every hour of the day.” Ask yourself, do I have to do
this or can someone else do it? I will spend some quiet time and reflect on what is going on in my
heart. I will lay aside my electronics and relax out-of-doors, and breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the
incredible beauty around us.
Let us begin this new season being kind to ourselves, and we will find that we are blessed and
most certainly more kind to those around us.
Have a great September.

Why Use A Travel Agent
I'm sometimes called a travel counsellor, or a travel professional. I use my knowledge of destinations, resorts,
escorted tours, cruise ships, air travel and attractions to 'counsel' clients on the best choices for their vacation
dreams, desires and budgets.
Think of me as you would an accountant or a real estate agent. You can file your own tax return, but those who
choose to use an accountant, do so because they recognize that specialized knowledge pays off.
The same goes for a real estate agent. You can sell your house without an agent, but most don't, because the
absence of that knowledge can result in major problems. While my role is to match up clients with travel
products, it's always your interests I represent. If anything goes wrong with your trip, I'm here for you.
You have choices today. You can research and book your trip online. You might even save a couple of dollars.
If you're just booking a flight from point A to point S, or a car rental, or a hotel room, go ahead and book it
online. I won't be offended. You might find that it takes longer than you expected to find the 'best price,' and if
your flight is oversold or cancelled you'll be on your own, but if you're a gambler the odds are pretty good
you'll be OK.
When it comes to your hard-earned vacation time, I will passionately defend the value of my services. That
shiny brochure with the golden bodies sitting around a glistening pool doesn't always tell the whole story. I
might know that that pool is under renovation, the rooms are tired and dated, that on the particular week of your
holiday the place will be packed with drunken college kids. That might matter to you.
Benefit from my Knowledge
My knowledge offers other benefits. The concierge who can arrange tickets to anything. That wonderful little
restaurant tucked away in a side street. The seat on the plane with that extra legroom. These are the kinds of
things I learn through my travels and studies. I'm thrilled to share them with you.
This is how I make my living, but I won't get rich doing this. That's not my motivation. I love to travel, see new
places, meet new people, enjoy new sensations. More than anything, I love the feedback from clients that my
knowledge, care and attention helped them create lasting memories. That's worth a lot to them. What is it worth
to you?
Did you know?
That most of the time there are no fees for booking with me? My prices 99% of the time are the same as you
can find online, but the difference is the added value of getting my expertise and experience!

Wow, 119 years old this September Happy Birthday Chiropractic!
As a chiropractor I know it may sound a bit biased, but I
LOVE chiropractic.
Since 2001, I owe many thanks to the profession that
gave me back my life and health! Now, I get to help
people improve their own health and lives. What a
rewarding service to provide people with; I love what I
do!
We are so fortunate to have chiropractic care so
available to us in Canada! YES, I do regularly adjust my
wife and 3 children and I also get myself adjusted to
keep me working at my best. I cannot imagine life without
it!
However, many parts of the world have no access to
this amazing type of health and wellness care.
Local Fernie resident & Chiropractor, Dr. Robert
Champagne, is leading a charitable foundation that is
changing this.
“Through our programs, we provide sustainable
chiropractic care to the people of the developing world.”
Join Pure Life Family Chiropractic – Elkford (PLFC), this
September 14-20th for LIGHT UP THE WORLD WEEK
as we celebrate chiropractic’s birthday and support
Chiropractic for the World Foundation's (CFTWF’s)
global vision.
Half of every new office visit during this week will be
donated from PLFC to CFTWF. This is a great
opportunity to give to those less fortunate and improve
your own health at the same time. It is a Win Win!
Like us on our Facebook page to see how you can
participate in this fundraiser and help raise money for an
amazing cause. Each $1.00 raised will provide one
adjustment in a developing country.

The Elkford Project Society
For those of you who are new to the Elkford Area, the Project Society is a non-profit organization that was founded in
the early years of Fording Coal and Elkford. The members of the society contribute $2.00 per month, through payroll
deduction. This money is used to fund projects in Elkford. Over the years the project society has contributed
thousands of dollars to such organizations as the Elkford Figure Skating Club, Elkford Minor Hockey Association, the
Elkford Recreation Centre, Mountain Meadows Golf Course, the Wapiti Ski Hill, the Cross Country Skiing Club, Rocky
Mountain Elementary School, Elkford Secondary School and numerous others. The funds are used to buy much
needed equipment, build cabins and buy technological equipment.
This society depends on your support and help. In order to continue doing “good” for Elkford we need new ideas
and new faces, and for you all to contribute to the fund. Please think about joining the Elkford Project Society through
your mines’ payroll deduction program; just contact your payroll office.
Also, think about joining the Elkford Project Society. There are no regular meeting dates, as the society only meets
when there are requests from various organizations. This can occur once or twice a year. The meetings are short, and
may only take up to an hour to complete. This is a worthwhile society to be involved in and the satisfaction it brings is
well worth the hour or two you need to dedicate to attending.

Elkford Thunder Bring Home the Silver
The Elkford U14 Girls Fastball team, Elkford Thunder, travelled to Calahoo Alberta for the Alberta Fastball Provincials
July 4-6, 2014. Entering Provincials with a record of 15 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie; the coaches were not sure what to expect
as they were going up against the best in the province. They knew their team was strong but had no idea the girls would
be going into the final undefeated. Elkford Thunder won all 5 games over Friday and Saturday and Sunday to place them
in the final against Stettler. They fought hard and held their heads high and proud when they walked away with Silver.
The girls, coaches and parents would like to thank the following for their generous donations to help make the trip
successful:
Elkford Project Society for the Uniforms
Chauncey Ridge Food Mart
Bearspaw
Paul and Kay Bottolfson
Elkford Slo Pitch
Piston High Slo Pitch Team
Elkford Minor Ball
The community of Elkford for their generosity during the girl’s bottle drive
All the people who gave to the donation jar during Wildcat Days
The biggest Thank You goes out to Blaine Borys, Cory Diederich, Dave Bohn and Blaine Beranek, the coaches, who
gave countless hours to our girls. You not only taught them strategy, plays and new moves; you taught them
responsibility, respect for each other, respect for themselves and good sportsmanship. You taught them that no matter
what they are up against, a positive attitude helps win the game.
To Blaine Borys - you have given to these girls for the past several years even though you haven’t had children of
your own in ball in many years. We all thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you do. Without you, the girls would
not have been able to do what they did this season. Thank You!
