During his lifetime he put together almost 9,000 items, carefully cataloguing them according to school and type. When he died, they were scattered as a result of 42 auctions (between November 1775 and January 1776). The incredible task of putting the collection back together was made possible because of the trade-mark (a capital M) which Mariette stamped on every drawing he owned and by the unusual mounting of each drawing on a blue background (‘Mariette blue’) which brought out the best qualities of the drawings. The whole collection will be published in six volumes: the first two are devoted to the French School, three to the Italian school and one to the Dutch, Flemish and German schools. Pierre-Jean Mariette Catalogue Raisonné Edited by Pierre Rosenberg English/Italian text Size 12,5×20 Pages 452 Illustrations 30 color Hardcover Price e 85,00 ISBN 978-88-370-7542-2 9 788837 075422 For the first time Germano Celant writes about the group of artists comprising Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Marisa Merz, Giulio Paolini, Pino Pascali, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Emilio Prini and Gilberto Zorio, for which he himself, in 1967, coined the term “Arte Povera”. The book is a collection of theoretical texts, focusing on both the art of the movement and the styles of the individual artists, and concentrates as much on the movement’s contingent side as on its fragmentary, contradictory, pluralistic way of creating art. But, above all, it is a comprehensive update on his reflections in 1985, the year of the book entitled “Arte povera, storie e protagonisti” (Arte Povera, Stories and Protagonists), which was written by Celant himself, was never distributed and, since it was only circulated among those involved, became a much-soughtafter and inaccessible cult item. This book contains an anastatic copy of the original, providing source of reference and an opportunity to take a new look at Arte Povera. Since 1967, the language of Arte Povera has brought within its scope water and stone, fire and electricity, words and ideas, and has even involved animals and plants, which take on particular significance because they belong to the primary, essential world. This field of art has always been based on a de-constructive attitude, which takes into account the many different kinds of artistic expression in relation to the context in which it is created. The constant innovation and originality of the Arte Povera movement over the years made it a lasting influence on the Italian contemporary art scene. The anastatic copy of the book is presented in its complete form, in a smaller refined edition, as an introduction to the broader-ranging work about Pierre-Jean Mariette’s collection. The five volumes of drawings by French, Italian, Dutch, German and Flemish artists will be presented to the public from November 2011. 6 7 arte povera BEUYS VOICE VV.AA. After Futurism and Metaphysical Art, it made the largest contribution to changes to the international artistic language. Over the years, this body of artists, both singly and collectively, gained recognition in large exhibitions and important monographs but there has never been an exhibition that presented their wealth of technique. This is the reason behind the plan to exhibit the movement’s entire path in museums in different Italian cities with the intention of highlighting all the passages in its history 8 between 1967 and 2010, and with every museum concentrating on one stage. To achieve this aim, symbolic of the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification, the research focused on the exhibition venues - the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea-Castello di Rivoli, La Triennale in Milan, MAMbo Museo di Arte Moderna in Bologna, MAXXI Museo delle Arti del XXI secolo and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome. The material gathered during the phases of research and securing loans for the exhibitions forms the core of this extensive publication, with approximately 200 illustrations and theoretical contributions from experts, philosophers and directors of museums of national and international standing who have analysed the significance of Arte Povera in the history of art and in the contemporary culture. art art Contemporary art monographies Contemporary art exhibitions German The Kunsthaus in Zurich is paying tribute to the German master by staging an important international event that forms an integral part of the exhibition entitled “Joseph Beuys – Difesa della Natura” (Joseph Beuys – Defense of Nature), curated by Lucrezia De Domizio Durini and Tobia Bezzola. This book marking the birthday of this German painter and sculptor, who was one of the most authoritative and innovative voices of post-war society, is published in English and German. The book, about 1,000 pages long, containing more than 200 illustrations from the historical archive of De Domizio Durini, describes the Living Sculpture which made Beuys famous, together with the historical background that is fundamental to comprehending his thinking and work. A vital tool for a better understanding of his teaching on the environment, nature and ecology. The book also recalls Beuys’ decisive role in the founding of the Green movement in Germany and emphasizes the on-going commitment of his output, which was geared to improving the human condition, as well as providing readers with an update on the new trends of the post-Beuys period. 9 art art Contemporary art monographies beatriz milhazes ELISA SIGHICELLI VV.AA. English text Size 28×28 Pages 224 Illustrations 260 color Hardcover with jacket Release date November 2010 Price e 49,00 Price e 90,00 Beatriz Milhazes is a Brasilian artist, born in 1961 in Rio de Janeiro. Milhazes is known for her work juxtaposing Brazilian cultural imagery and references to western Modernist painting. Beatriz Milhazes’s paintings are seductive. They are like a rare Amazonian plant - at once both ravishing and deceptive, full of layers, unexpected tricks and treats. Milhazes has over the past two decades built up a rich and complex repertoire of images, forms and colours in her work. While she shows an adventurous fusion of influences, her canvases have an undeniably Brazilian flavour - filled with brightly coloured elements relating to a string of popular Brazilian motifs, from carnival-inspired imagery to tropical flora and fauna. Her paintings are in the permanent collections in many institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Banco Itaú, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. She also painted the Tate Modern Restaurant’s mural. A photographer globally renowned for her experiments with light, she has exhibited her works in the world’s leading galleries and is represented by one of the most famous contemporary art gallery, the Gagosian Gallery. A highly personal interpretation of the light box enabled Elisa Sighicelli to play with light and the details of her photographs. Her partial illuminations, carefully studied, succeed in creating spatial depth and metaphysical concepts, that are almost beyond any dimension of time. Sighicelli’s visual research focuses on comparing micro and macro scales on an equal basis, thanks to a conscious use of the horizon, the interplay of shadows and reflected light. This construction highlights the void which, when carefully studied and examined, assumes undeniable constructive importance. The space is wisely organized, pregnant with traces of memory, shadows and the unknown, but, without the human figure, only highly evocative. To begin with, the themes of the light boxes are details of interiors (chairs, beds, armchairs), then more open environments, followed by landscapes, drawing continuous inspiration from her travels. Along with photography, Sighicelli also explores the field of video, using the same care with regard to composition: Boudelaire (2004), Non-Stop Exotic Cabaret (2007), Nocturne (Trajectories) (2006), Dance-Bound (2007) up to her most recent works, the book provides a complete description of her work. SUBODH GUPTA VV.AA. English text Size 32×32 Pages 304 Illustrations 300 Hardcover Price e 90,00 The first monograph on key indian contemporary art exponent Subodh Gupta, with contributions by prestigious art critics and a wealth of images published here for the first time. Born in Bihar, one of the most important centers of Buddhist teaching, Gupta now lives in New Delhi. His move from the country to the city is an allegory of modern India, where the rural dimension of the village is rapidly bending to the influence of cosmopolitan culture. The artist’s monumental sculptures and installations, created by assembling hundreds of sparkling stainless-steel utensils, reflect the ‘short-circuit’ currently taking place between archaic and modern culture, between traditions and change. On the one hand, the monograph, which has two main sections, examines the career of the artist through an exploration of his work, from his earliest works up to the present day, and it focuses on the exhibition entitled “There is always cinema”, created by Subodh in the former cinema of San Gimignano, which resulted in a series of works presented by Galleria Continua. The book concludes with criticisms by the famed French critic Nicolas Bourriaud and Italian Elio Grazioli, and an extensive photographic content, most of which is published here for the first time, with examples of the artist’s extraordinary creations, made using various everyday utensils and pots and pans. 10 11 art art Milan, Triennale dream factories BERLIN Edited by Silvana Annichiarico Scientific curator Alberto Alessi English/Italian text Size 24×32 Pages 352 Illustrations 230 color Paperback with flaps Release date April 2011 Edited by G. The layout of the exhibition oscillates between two poles: on the one hand, in-depth precise theoretical thought based on the curator of the exhibitions reflections on this topic in recent years, and, on the other, a poetic, artistic and fairy-tale-like treatment linked to the imaginary worlds of Lewis Carroll and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The research was conducted through projects, practical experience and programs of an experimental nature with a tendency towards innovation, also from the point of view of expression, a vital pre-requisite for an institution like the MAXXI which is so deeply involved in contemporary art and architecture. The exhibition is divided into two large areas. The first is 14 organized into four specific sections: landscape, city, housing and architecture, and looks at projects, data and experience in Italy and abroad. The second examines experiences which consolidate the idea of creativeness associated with the re-cycling culture. Through these areas and the sustainability ethic, the aim is to seek and promote the search for “sustainability aesthetics”. Concurrent with the “Re-cycle” exhibition, a photographic section examines some of the aspects of the main theme of the exhibition through the work of contemporary photographers from Italy and elsewhere. The catalogue brings together the entire contemporary art collection, of works both on display and in store, acquired by the National Gallery of Modern Art (GNAM) and the National Gallery of 21st-century art (MAXXI). The time-span examined in the catalogue ranges from 1958 to 2008, the last 50 years being the period defined by the law protecting contemporary art. The catalogue, published in two volumes, has been conceived as an alphabetical list of artists’ names with an analytical index for the purposes of research. A final section is devoted to works which, due to their specific characteristics (for example, books by artists), or because of their origin or the way in which they were acquired (for example ships’ furnishings), demanded treatment which reflected these differences. The aim of the catalogue is to present the works so that they can be easily consulted, in a format of scientific charts and individual color reproductions of each work, covering the more than 1,350 works of contemporary art in Italy’s national collections. 15 art art Rome, Gnam BARUCHELLO Edited by Carla Subrizi and Achille Bonito Oliva Size 21×27,3 Pages 400 Illustrations 250 Hardcover Price e 60,00 EXHIBITION December 6th 2011 - March 4th 2012 adolf LOOS. 1870-1933 ARTE E FOTOGRAFIA IN ITALIA 1850 – 2000 Edited by R. The various sections, each one of which focuses on a phase of research, are introduced by a new text and a selection of earlier writings by the artist himself, some of which have already been published but which can no longer be found on the market. The illustrations cover far more ground than the works displayed in the exhibition and include many photographs taken by Claudio Abate. Finally, the book contains exhaustive documentation (technical data, photograms and synopses) of the films and other video productions made by the artist from 1963 to the present day, as well as a catalogue of the works featuring in the exhibition. The catalogue of the exhibition looks at Zavattini’s relationship with collector and gallery-owner Cardazzo, whose Venetian salon was a sort of intellectual meeting-place for Italian avant-garde artists and writers of that time, including Zavattini. In 1943, year of the first Cavallino Prize, the artist was one of the promoters of the ‘Gioco del Paradiso’ (Paradise Game) exhibition, which included drawings and paintings by Italian writers, including Dino Buzzati, Antonio Delfini, Eugenio Montale and Leonardo Sinisgalli. Zavattini won first prize, thus establishing a lasting contract with Cardazzo. The catalogue reveals the across-the-board skill of Zavattini who, in terms of vocation and character, was equally gifted in the media of literature, journalism, painting and, especially, narrative. This unusual side of “Zavattini in color” is certainly less wellknown than the ‘black and white’ version we know from his films, but just as rich in imagination, still able to tell stories, describe figures and surprise us, even today. Romanelli, Paola Rossi and J.-C. Hoquet tell the story of the building right up to the moment when Tadao Ando stepped in. His aim was to make Punta della Dogana the third contemporary art venue in Venice, after the Peggy Guggenheim and Palazzo Grassi. Designed in the 17th century by Giuseppe Benoni, the building consists of eight bays with a tower at the tip. On the top of the tower is a large gilt bronze sphere representing the globe, shouldered by two kneeling Atlas figures, with a statue of Fortune on the very top. This wedge-shaped building between the Grand Canal and the Canale della Giudecca, overlooking the Bacino San Marco, commands one of the finest views in Venice. It is a collection of old works and new ones by artists exploring “anxiety, the questioning of certainties in terms of identity and the relationship between the inner, personal dimension and that of the work.” 20 Adel Abdessemed, Maurizio Cattelan, Subodh Gupta, David Hammons, Roni Horn, Jeff Koons, Paul McCarthy, Julie Merethu, Bruce Naumann, Charles Ray, Thomas Schütte, Elaine Sturtevant and Tatiana Trouvé. It is an itinerary, then, that is constructed of comparisons, analogies and differences. The Museo del 900 is based on the best points of the city’s existing civic collections, and display works of Futurism, Spatialism, Arte Povera and the greatest artists of the century, including Boccioni, Carrà, Soffici, de Chirico, Sironi, Martini, Morandi, Fontana, Manzoni, Kounellis and many others. The 350 works on display are catalogued into 26 thematic sections on permanent display. These include: Il Quarto Stato by Pelizza da Volpedo, also visible from outside the museum – the Trittico Stati d’animo and the sculpture Forme uniche di continuità nello spazio by Boccioni, the Venere del Porto and The Futurist Self-Portrait by Sironi, and Fontana’s neon structure, lit up and visible day and night from Piazza Duomo. A master of construction and invention, Alighiero Boetti has spent his whole life conducting complex research into a variety of themes. This first volume catalogues his works between 1962 and 1971, a crucial period of in-depth research. The generative principles which make his soul vibrate, like order and chaos, randomness and necessity, seeking and finding, the equal and the different, are developed in his work through materials and procedures which are simple “but of extraordinary esthetic clarity”. Speed, dynamism, action, modernity, together with a disdain for tradition and conventionality were the values behind the shout of the Futurist movement, which called for the renewal of Italian society. The weapon they used for their fight was a special kind of manifesto, to which the exhibition and the catalogue Futurismo Manifesto 100x100, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva, are dedicated. The authors of the interesting contributions to the catalogue come from different walks of life. Along with the curator, the many-faceted and multi-talented Achille Bonito Oliva, they include historian Lucio Villari, musician-cum-artist Daniele Lombardi, art historian Alessandro Masi, video artist Vincenzo Capalbo and art historian and curator Francesca Barbi, who is also the grand-daughter of Martinetti. futurismo 100. illuminazioni Edited by Ester Coen Italian text (in appendix English, French, Russian, German text) Size 25×33 Pages 450 Illustrations 250 color Hardcover with jacket Release date 2009 art art Futurism osvaldo peruzzi Edited by Dario Matteoni English/Italian text Size 25×28 Pages 352 Illustrations 800 color and black Hardcover EXHIBITION Rome, Palazzo Sciarra October 25th 2011 - February 12nd 2012 Curated by Maria Grazia Bernardini and Marco Bussagli, the exhibition is organized into seven sections, which document the artistic development of the 16th century, through the transition from the superb and masterly skills of Early Renaissance art, which was still based on Humanist culture, to a new style of art that was strongly influenced by a new and all-encompassing religious fervour. Masterpieces on display include works by Raphael, such as his Self-portrait and Portrait of Tommaso Fedra Inghirami both on loan, under exceptional circumstances, from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence by Michelangelo, such as the David or Apollo, from the Bargello National Museum, and the Pietà for Vittoria Colonna, from Boston restored thanks to the Fondazione Roma by Sebastiano del Piombo, such as the Portrait of a Woman, on loan from Harewood House near Leeds, and many other artists, including Perin del Vaga and Francesco Salviati. From his university studies to his first efforts in graphic design and the ceramics industry, the first Monza Biennale and his appointment as editor-in-chief of <i>Domus</i>, from his many contributions in the field of industry to stage set and costume design, his hallmark is unmistakable and his extraordinary contribution to the recovery and success of Italian industry after the two world wars and the subsequent periods of crisis takes shape. His major importance in the field of design worldwide can be seen from the fact that many of his creations, that are extensively documented in this book, are still being produced, while others are periodically relaunched by the major manufacturers of design objects. English installation exhibit Edited by Italo Rota English/Italian text Size 21×23 Pages 442 Illustrations 300 color Paperback Release date 2009 French An authentic guide to Italian craft skills compiled by Fendi, a name that has always been synonymous with in-depth research and ‘good works’ made by hand. Although the structure of the book may seem rigid, arranged by headword, the content actually allows the reader to make numerous associations which are intellectually stimulating, without ever compromising its userfriendliness or visual impact. For each item, for each headword, the pages list the names of craftsmen, where they are to be found and their particular specialty. So, not a register, but a book about what is happening’ in the wideranging contemporary discussion about objects ‘made by hand’. Describing ‘hand-made’ objects means talking about us and where we come from, but, more particularly, it means describing a way of working which is also a way of being Italian, with our culture of savoir-faire. Price e 55,00 A tracking shot on the works of an architect who knows how to play on the sensitivity of his audience. Emotional crisis, taught nerves and hence a predisposition to perceive in a much more complex way than normal. These, Rota admits, are the emotions which he hopes to provoke in spectators who visit his projects. Installations that can emotionally shock people and raise their levels of sensitivity. And, to achieve this, he uses color made of light, transparencies, screens and projections (never material, painted color), an exceptional tool and, to him, vital for conveying detailed messages in the best possible way, because of the processes it stimulates in the brain. Increasingly working in the sphere of magic rather than the sphere of the useful, Italian Italo Rota’s flair for design, working abroad and communicating at an international level is described in this unique publication. The book also considers the playful side of the projects he has undertaken, creating games for adults with just a touch of magic, fun and sophistication. 36 THE WHISPERED Directory of Craftsmanship A Contemporary Guide to the Italian Crafstmanship VV.AA. In 1990, the first fashion show for men’s wear imposed such a revolutionary way of restyling men’s suits that, in 1991, it won the Woolmark Prize for being the most innovative collection of the year. In 2010, with their June fashion shows, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana celebrated 20 years passed since that first, successful step into the world of “pour homme”. Since then, not only great Hollywood stars have flaunted the famous shelf bras, lace underwear and shirts of the Italian duo, but actors and singers like Dustin Hoffman and Bono also wear their garments, both at gala events and in their free time. Behind the many splendid images and contributions from authoritative voices in the sector, the book tells the story of the men’s fashion house of Dolce & Gabbana. It describes the most important milestones and remembers the fashion shows and the advertising campaigns, with exceptional testimonials from people from Gattuso to Matthew McConaughey. This book takes an in-depth look at the glamorous fashion from the famous duo, from the impeccable cut to that painstaking attention to detail that is so characteristic of Italian fashion. A unique journey highlighting the details and work behind the finished product. A Dolce&Gabbana garment is built up layer by layer, from the first cut to the last, careful fold. The cloth is modelled and cut to perfection, as if it were a sculpture. Every hidden stitched is hand-sewn, one after the other, until the suit fits like a glove. The final aim is perfection, which is why each suit is entirely handmade. The photo shoot commissioned solely for this volume is by Gian Paolo Barbieri, one of the most authoritative Italian photographers on an international level. The shoot features the well-known model Adam Senn, who has also starred in some of MTV’s most popular reality shows. DOLCE&GABBANA FASHION SHOWS 1990-2010 Diamonds & Pearls VV.AA. Dolce and Gabbana have played on their Sicilian origins and inherent sensuality that have become their trademark to imagine a range of men: from the traditional Sicilian in his beret and vest, with his gold crucifix hanging from a chain around his neck, to the macho with rippling abs under his shirt and double-breasted jacket and their more glamorous, chic playboy of latter years embodied by the statuesque David Gandy. 38 Breathtaking, provocative and daringly glittery: a new book on Dolce & Gabbana with photos by the celebrated Viennese photographer Guenter Parth. The relationship between fashion and photography has always been an inspiring and fruitful one. The ideas and innovation of fashion design have generated an extraordinary creative output that have made fashion photography one of the most seductive and influential languages of our time. In 1982 when Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana decided to create their own line they enjoyed immediate success, a success that has never wavered. This talented duo soon won over the world’s stars, taking the name of Italian fashion right to the top. A result achieved thanks to establishing the right equilibrium between rational accuracy and creative flair. The book has been curated by Lucia Valerio, the wellknown journalist, head of the gardening section of the magazine photography & performing arts photography & performing arts Photography & Performing arts VilleGiardini. One of Italy’s most authoritative garden designers, architect Paolo Pejrone, dedicates his section of the book to the irises, magnolias and jasmines which inspired Acqua di Parma’s “Le Nobili” line of perfumes for women. Meanwhile, Francois Demachy writes about the same flowers from the point of view of making perfume. The gardens are shown at their best, in various seasons, with vast expanses of flowers and stunning colors. Today, Santa Sofia, dedicated to the Divine Wisdom, survives only as a museum, dramatically impoverished by the loss of all its Christian furnishings. Despite this, much of the original building and atmosphere, “a profusion of natural light and glimmering reflections a radiance generated by the very interior” according to our source, still succeeds in imposing itself as the finest expression of the Christian East, and as one of the greatest masterpieces of all time, in terms of architectural and structural ideas. The book’s aim is to explain how Justinian’s architects succeeded in creating a work that was quite without precedent, in this place that was colonized in the 7th century BC by the Greeks, and later became Constantinople, the new capital of the Roman Eastern Empire. Max Dudler’s work is both a symbol and a renewal of this unusual way of interpreting architecture in modern cities. An important cultural figure in Berlin, where he lives and works, he collaborates not only with studios in Berlin but also in Frankfurt-am-Main and Zurich. In addition to his professional work, he has a busy teaching schedule at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. The book examines his original approach to composition, developed over more than 30 years of intensive activity, by publishing more than 500 of his projects, many of which are shown here for the first time. The architect’s daily creative grind, tackled in an extremely consistent way and with great inventive freedom, is shown through original drawings and sketches, collected here for the first time in a single volume for easy consultation. The book comes with a complete list of works and a bibliography. Furthermore, the book contains critical articles by Francesco Dal Co, Werner Oechslin, Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani, Annalisa Trentin and Francesco Saverio Fera. tomaso buzzi Edited by A.G. Cassani Italian text Size 25×28 Pages 320 Illustrations 600 duotone and color Hardcover with jacket Release date 2008 Price e 110,00 Tomaso Buzzi (Sondrio 1900 - Rapallo 1981) was undoubtedly one of the outstanding characters in the history of 20th century architecture. After 1945 he became an arbiter of taste, working for some of Italy’s most illustrious dynasties from the noble and industrial circles, interpreting lifestyles and leading the vanguard of fashionable society. Buzzi graduated from Milan University in 1923. He subsequently joined the “Novecento Milanese” group that Gio Ponti, Emilio Lancia and other well-known names belonged to. The symbiotic relationship with the Italian aristocracy that was to last a lifetime was launched in 1931, when he carried out works on the Villa Vittoria belonging to the Contini Bonacossi family. His abandonment of modern themes from the mid-1930s onwards and his links with an elite clientele marks his divorce from the mainstream of the architectural establishment and the start of his damnatio memoriae which has lasted until the present day. 1956 marked his most eccentric work, the Scarzuola, with the purchase of a 13th century church and Franciscan monastery near Montegabbione (Montegiove, Terni). 56 57 case del balilla. architettura e fascismo R. The exploration of the Mateus brothers focuses principally on single-family homes and is translated into highly refined and skilled results, which share the clear recognisability that distinguishes all their designs. The lightness achieved by sculpting the matter with simple expedients and close bond between concept and construction are the fruit of a meticulous exploration of the options offered by the excavation of matter. The investigation of the two designers is governed by their remarkable ability to annul the weight of the mass, overcoming gravity, and their choice of manners of expression that are far removed from the formal excesses that distinguish contemporary architectural languages. Their most important works include a house in Alenquer (1998- 2000), a house in Brejos de Azeitão (1999-2000), Barriera Antunes House (2000-03), the Sines Art Centre (2001-05), the Santa Marta Lighthouse and Museum in Cascais (2003-07), a house in Comporta (2009-10), the Furnas Research Centre (2010) and a house in Lieira (2010). The aim of the publication is to explore the cultural conditions and ways of thinking which have resulted in some extremely fine architectural, executive and structural achievements. The analysis of the most important projects of the Conzett Bronzini Gartmann studio constitutes an opportunity to appreciate the unusual rapport that has been established in Switzerland between thinking on form and structural considerations. The introduction emphasizes the disciplinary aspects and questions that make the studio’s work so interesting: the architectural and structural quality of the projects; the many different languages, contexts and scales involved, providing a broad overview of architectural output in Switzerland today; the different levels of collaboration, involving three generations of architects – the most senior generation, including Peter Zumthor, the middle generation, with Valerio Olgiati, and the new generation of emerging young architects – and, finally, the rapport between the local context and the studio’s dealings on a national scale. Two interviews with Peter Zumthor and Jürg Conzett, complete the volume. 59 ArchizooM associati 1966-1974 mauro galantino architetto Achille Castiglioni 1918-2002 R. Mollino, Texts by M. Cotelli, M. Savorra Italian text Size 19×22 Pages 352 Illustrations 685 black and color Hardcover with jacket Release date 2009 Price e 60,00 Carlo Mollino (1905-1973) was a key figure in the eccentric élite of artistic and cultural circles in Turin. He was not only interested in architecture, but also in aviation, design and fashion and his research extended to the cinema, screenplay, literature and, above all, mountains. In the 1930s, this last interest became a passion which ead him to publish a book in 1950, entitled Introduzione al discesismo. When it was first published, it was received rather like a ‘fairy story’, a story about humans and their dream of defying Nature. The book, which can be regarded as one of the first true skiing manuals, is now being reprinted in its original format. For Mollino Alpine skiing was the expression of a profound metaphor: “Launching the skier so that he can find himself”. The architect set himself this task and, at the same time, by controlling and regulating it in various ways, created the downhill style. The mechanics of the physical process, the effort made by the various parts of the body involved, tips on how to move harmoniously, flowing trajectories marked on paper and on snow, and slender figures skiing on silvery slopes immortalized in extraordinary black and white photographs are the things that distinguish the chapters of this book, together with numerous drawings by Mollino describing parabolas and changes of direction. la moda e l’architettura Edited by A. Chiorino English/Italian text Size 30×24 Pages 240 Illustrations 300 black and color Hardcover with jacket Price e 60,00 This book reviews 18 wineries built in several countries between 2007 and today. Francesca Chiorino’s introductory essay examines the relationship between the wineries and the environment and the architects’ ability to decipher and render the characteristics of the terroir, intended as all the cultural, environmental, geological and morphological qualities peculiar to the site. An essay by Carlo Tosco confirms the idea that exploration of the territory is core to the architectural design process for wineries. Awareness is currently being raised in a practice that spans ecology, landscape management and even architecture, often with exceptional results and in which wineries become hugely important parts of a far broader process of general territorial rediscovery. Most of the designs reviewed are in Europe and America and the illustrations and accompanying texts focus on how the buildings are inserted into the landscape. The architects examined are Álvaro Siza Vieira, Perraudin architectes, RCR arquitectes, Bearth & Deplazes, Andreas Burghardt, Werner Tscholl, Francisco Izquierdo, Sebastian Mariscal Studio, Richard Rogers, Gerd Bergmeister, Tobia Scarpa, Norman Foster, Estudio Nómada, Jean Nouvel, VF arquitectos, Onsitestudio, Guedes + Decampos and AFT Arquitectos. architettura e vino F.
