October 11, 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the publishing of The Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Year of Faith is a “summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of the world.” (Porta Fidei 6) Every Catholic is called through baptism to be a disciple of Christ and proclaim the Gospel. This Year of Faith is an opportunity for us to renew our baptismal call by living out the everyday moments in our lives with greater faith, hope and love. Faith “is the lifelong companion that makes it possible to perceive, ever anew, the marvels that God works for us. Intent on gathering the signs of the times in the present of history, faith commits every one of us to become a living sign of the presence of the Risen Lord in the world.” (Porta Fidei 15) United with the Church Universal, Pius X has made “The Year of Faith” our theme for this academic year and faith renewal our goal. Under the exhortation of the Holy Father, I encourage you to re-commit yourselves to nurturing our awesome gift of faith and seeing life through the eyes of our God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. To help us in this conversion process, we are encouraged to read Porta Fidei, which Fr. Jim Meysenburg Superintendent in turn encourages us to study and pray the Documents of Vatican II and The Catechism of the Catholic Church. As you grow in your faith, please pray for the Pius X community to embrace this year of faith with a great sense of trust and hope. As this Year of Faith growth commences, our diocese welcomes The Most Reverend James Conley as the ninth Bishop of Lincoln and gratefully thanks Bishop Bruskewitz for 22 years of service. Bishop Conley came to meet our students within an hour of the press conference that announced him as our new Bishop. Since 2004, the Honor vert our own hearts. Photo by Kally Werning. Roll has recognized excellence in Catholic Identity, Academics and Civic Education at Catholic high schools across the United States. In the past six years, Pius X was twice selected as one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the nation. In 2008, we were designated as an honorable mention school for Catholic Identity; this places Pius X in the top four percent of all Catholic schools in the nation. How pleased and proud we are to receive this honor. It is a reflection of our students, staff and families. Speaking of being proud of our Pius X community, our fall activities have been wonderful, and our sports teams have done well. The fall musical, Godspell, was enjoyable and captivating, and our marching band competed with great success this fall. Our girls’ softball team was crowned Class B state champions; our girls’ golf and our cross country teams were state runners-up in Class A. Our girls’ volleyball team placed 3rd at the Class A state tournament, and our students, cheerleaders, team and fans received the Class A Sportsmanship Award at that tournament. Congratulations to all who participated in achieving this excellence. With much gratitude to God, Pius X has 18 alumni in the seminary and four women alumni in religious formation. What a blessing for all of us! Let us pray for them and each other as we begin this wonderful season of Advent/ Christmas; may we always be reminded that God came and still comes to us in unexpected ways. May we be grateful for His loving presence. Thank you for generously supporting Pius X through your prayers and works. May you know the love and healing of our Savior in a very special way this Advent and Christmas Season. Let us continue to pray for one another. In theSPOTLIGHT by Sophia Werning Talented Pius X Alumni Shine in the Performing Arts D ance. Acting. Television production. Casting and direction. Costume design. Music of all genres. Over the past several years and from coast to coast, Pius X alumni are achieving great success in the performing arts and entertainment industries. A modern performing arts facility is part of the overall strategic plan at Pius X and for good reason. Whether it is band, show choir, theater, dance or production, the quality of talent among Pius’ performing arts students over the years has been second to none. Up to one third of our current student population participates in music and theater alone, and the number of opportunities for Pius X students to use their God-given gifts continues to grow. Many of these students who have honed their skills through their experiences at the high school level have gone on to use their talents in college and in their future vocations. This month’s Pius Connections offers only a sampling of the remarkable achievements of Pius X alumni that are pursuing their dreams in the performing arts and entertainment industries around the country. In the coming months, we will be highlighting these and other individuals with in-depth profiles describing their journeys in their respective fields, and how their formation at Pius X and 4 U piusx.net passion for the arts is being manifested in their lives. Be sure to check upcoming issues of e-mail newsletters, the Pius X Alumni web site, and the Alumni Facebook page for interviews, highlights and stories of our alumni living and working in the performing arts and entertainment fields. From Pius X to the Big Stage Con O’Shea-Creal ’04 is convinced that the entertainment industry needs more people of faith in order to change our society’s culture from the inside out. “We need good Catholic artists to be present in this industry because so much of what we think and believe is formed by the media.” A life-long performing artist in music, dance and theater, including his time on stage at Pius, O’Shea-Creal recently hit a major milestone in his field when he landed the lead role of Bert in the national tour of the musical Mary Poppins. The company is currently on tour and will be performing the musical in 48 cities in 30 states by this coming summer. O’Shea-Creal credits his parents and his formative years at Pius X for helping him to stay true to his values and even thrive in an often grueling and demanding industry. He describes the entertainment field as a “hot bed of progressive thinking” that often is at odds with Catholic beliefs. However, O’Shea-Creal is convinced that the vocation he is pursuing is exactly where he needs to be. “I’ve always had faith and confidence that if God really wants me to do this he will give me the strength,” he reflects. “And we really do need Catholic artists out there, even if it’s just one lone voice in the wilderness.” O’Shea-Creal notes that it’s rare that you come across people of devout faith in the secular entertainment industry, which is all the more reason Catholic performing arts students should thoughtfully discern if they are meant to pursue this field. “We live in an era when people want to be celebrities and have their 15 minutes of fame, and if you see the theater as a means of that, it can be appealing,” he explains. “But working in the arts really means asking: What are you trying to craft? Like everything else, this is a job. The more you craft the talent and the gifts you’ve been given, that’s the kind of focus and drive we need [in this business]. You should really feel called.” O’Shea-Creal offers some additional words of wisdom for young performing artists. “There is so much about this industry and the culture that challenges our faith, so don’t be afraid to ground yourself,” he urges. “I have found my faith to be actually very freeing in making my decisions in my career because I have a construct to work from.” The successful performer also points out that just because you are not working in a faith-based environment does not mean you have to check your religion at the door. “I’m in a very secular show,” he explains. “But you can be called to live the Gospel in that way, too. Just be true to your heart day to day. That’s true for any job or really anything you choose to do with your life,” he adds. “Life is more than a good job and good money, and I think Pius does a great job of promoting that.” An Investment in God-Given Gifts As someone who benefitted greatly from the many opportunities to hone his craft during his high school years, O’Shea-Creal is a strong proponent of investing in the performing arts. “Giving to the arts is an opportunity to provide students a skill set that they can carry out beyond high school,” he notes. “And to do so, you need a good facility. I think especially now that arts are on the chopping block [in many public schools], private schools like Pius are going to need to step up and help them grow.” O’Shea-Creal notes that high school athletics often garner more funding than the arts, but believes that both extracurricular activities are equally important. “What are we telling our children, that we value one more than the other?” he asks. “Not everyone is an athlete, although I did both. There are kids out there that have these God-given gifts [in the arts] and need the opportunity to discover and develop these gifts.” Although O’Shea-Creal has hit the high stage and is traveling all over the country, his faith continues to be a primary source of peace and strength in his life and career. “I try to find daily Mass whenever I go to another new town,” he says, adding that it is enjoyable to be able to visit so many different Catholic churches. “If I didn’t have my faith, I truly would be lost out here on the road. I cannot be more thankful to my parents for giving me a Catholic education. I’ve seen schools around the country and none compare to Pius.” After Years of Hard Work: The Big Break After dancer Joel Harrison graduated from Pius X in 2000, he chose a road less travelled. After many years of working on his unique craft – clogging – he decided to take a chance and open up his own dance studio in York, Neb., helping to train the next generation of dancers to perform and compete. In years prior, Harrison’s experiences as a student at Pius X helped him develop the seriousness, drive and determination Right: Joel Harrison ’00 and the All That! group anxiously await the results on America’s Got Talent. Pictured (l-r) are: Mark Clifford, Nick Cannon, host Mike Curtis, Harrison Barnes, Joel, Brad Berry, Brian Staggs and Drake Elkin. Photo courtesy of All That! The group recently received the 2012 Pioneer Award by the National Clogging Association and are currently preforming at The Sandals resort. Photo courtesy of All That! he needed to take the significant risk of starting his own business at the young age of 19. “I have so many awesome memories of my four years at Pius,” he reflects. “But one thing that really sticks out in my mind is always having the feeling of acceptance from my peers, the faculty and staff. Pius felt like – and still feels like – the largest extended family in the world.” For Harrison, pursuing his dream of working in the performing arts came without hesitation. “I knew my path was to become a dance teacher, trainer and choreographer,” he explains. “What better way to get started than diving in head -first by purchasing my own dance company.” The summer after his senior year, Harrison took out a loan and bought a dance studio. After what he describes as “intensive advertising and marketing,” he had more than 250 students enrolled the following September. Harrison also remained deeply involved in the competitive clogging circuit where he began competing at the age of 14. “Now that I was training myself and others full-time, my teams started winning top awards everywhere we went.” As the years passed, Harrison became a recognized national dance instructor in his field and began teaching at conventions all over the world. He was the youngest inductee into the International Clogging Hall of Fame, which resulted in opportunities to direct productions from Nashville, Tenn., to Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Hong Kong to Tokyo, Japan. Harrison also directed the opening ceremonies of the Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa. This past fall Harrison and his clogging group “All That!” exploded onto the national stage as contestants on NBC’s hit show America’s Got Talent, enthralling millions of fans around the country and the world with their unique style of dance. “The show was an incredible experience that I will never forget as long as I live,” Harrison says. “It constantly challenged our creativity, our drive and our capabilities. We all felt on top of our game the whole time.” While on the show, the audience and judges routinely hailed the group’s talent and appeal as they advanced to the semifinal round of the show. “I remember when it hit me at first - I was standing there on stage with my arms crossed, and my nose one inch away from a 60’ x 40’American flag, knowing that, when this flag comes flying up, it was game time! We were getting ready to charge into 11 million living rooms.” Although the act did not win the first place title, the national exposure garnered the dance troop many new opportunities and millions of new fans. Harrison and his fellow dancers are true pioneers in the performing arts industry, having taken a centuries old craft and transforming it into a modern style with mass appeal. “There is not another group of boys or dancers [like us] for that matter in the world,” Harrison explains. On November 24, the unique troop garnered the 2012 Pioneer Award at the National Clogging Association’s national convention. Due to the enormous exposure from America’s Got Talent, they are now traveling and performing on the world stage, including a recent tour in Tokyo, Japan and extended performances at The Sandals resorts. Never Forget to Give Thanks Harrison has a great deal of encouraging thoughts for students who hope to pursue the performing arts in high school and beyond. “The best advice I would give to a younger aspiring singer, dancer or actor is to continue to train every day,” he says. “Don’t only train yourself physically because often it’s your mental focus that will get you furthest.” Harrison also advises students to set personal goals and make it a point to meet them often. All of the fame and excitement of these past several months has done little to change Harrison’s love of his home town and the connections he has made at Pius. piusx.net U 5 More Talented Pius X Alumni Greg Coffey ’05 - During his days at Pius X, Coffey was immersed in the world of music. “I really enjoyed being a member of the marching band and wind ensemble,” he reminisces. “Mr. [Mike] Murphy is one of the best music educators in the state and there is no doubt that I learned a lot from him.” After graduation, Coffey earned his degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he was a member of the Nebraska Drumline, and then a Master’s in Percussion from Kansas State. Then he was off to Nashville, Tenn., where he is writing, recording and performing music, including his first signature album, “Greg Coffey”, that can be downloaded from I-Tunes (gregcoffeymusic.com). The talented performer credits his faith in God and his teachers for his success. “Being a student at Pius X was an experience I will always treasure,” he says. “Performing and creating music while honoring my Lord and Savior will forever be an important part of who I am and what I am.” Michael Petruconis ’87 - A self-described “band geek” in high school, Petruconis received his musical training from the University of Nebraska and the University of Minnesota. Before moving to Minneapolis, Mike served for three seasons in the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra. “I believe the arts at Pius gave me a glimpse into what it takes to pull off a good performance,” Petruconis says. “I saw how hard the teachers and directors worked, and I saw how well a group of students would come together for a common goal. Performing gave me a chance to push for excellence.” He adds that he was not an athlete, so music was his main outlet for training, practice, and setting goals. “Those things really taught me discipline, hard work, and delayed gratification. They also taught me how to handle disappointment when it comes.” Petruconis is now an active freelance artist in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Formerly third horn with the Minnesota Opera, he now performs frequently with the Minnesota Orchestra and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and is on faculty at St. Olaf College. “My education at Pius was one of the best gifts my parents gave me,” Mike reflects. “It gave me the foundation in the faith that I would need both in adolescence and later in life.” Nan Strait ’95 - On August 29, 2010, Strait was in a New York hotel room in her pajamas watching the 62nd Emmy Awards on television. The Executive Producer of Bravo’s hit reality series “Top Chef” was working on Season 8 while her production colleagues were in Los Angeles at the ceremony that nominated their 6th season for “Outstanding Reality-Competition Program.” It was the 4th nomination in a row, and in previous years she had left empty handed. So Strait decided to stay in New York. Much to her shock and delight, her production company Magic Elves was announced as the winner. “I’ll admit I cried – mostly tears of joy – watching my friends and co-workers go up on stage and get their award.” Strait offers a few simple words of advice: “If you’re nominated for an award, go to the award ceremony.” Strait continues to enjoy success in reality television, and has fond memories of her humble beginnings. “A favorite memory of mine is the times I shared with my best group of girlfriends, ‘The Bevos’. We loved going to watch the boys play baseball. Three cars filled with friends laughing about what happened last night, driving through rural Nebraska with the windows down, and country music playing on the radio. Happy times!” Strait also has carried with her throughout her career the values instilled in her at Pius. “Most people believe that success in the entertainment industry comes by being a cut-throat, ‘only out for yourself’ kind of person,” she says. “I was taught as a child to be kind to everyone. That was certainly reinforced at Pius X and it seems to have worked well for me in my professional life.” In fact, Joel continues to train hundreds of young dancers here in Lincoln at his Capital City Dance Shack, a studio that he and his family have managed since he sold the one in York. In between all of his traveling to do performances with the Myrtle Beach-based “All That!”, Harrison still calls Lincoln home. Recently, he had the opportunity to visit Pius to see how it has grown and 6 U piusx.net Elise Sievert ’04 - Moving to the east coast to pursue her dream of being a professional dancer, choreographer and teacher was a true leap of faith for Sievert. “I learned blind faith and trusting in God’s plan at Pius X,” she reflects. “I moved to New York with two suitcases and faith that I would find my way while not having a job or an apartment.” The move proved fruitful for Sievert, who began her adventure with an internship at Broadway Dance Center before being asked to join a professional company. She has performed with several companies and is currently working on fitness videos, commercials, and television. Her secret? “Persistence, hard work, also fine tuning your craft. And did I say persistence?” Sievert, like her fellow performing arts alumni, urges support for the arts at the high school level. “The arts are not only important for the development of a well-rounded education for all students, but are especially important for the individuals out there who need the tools to share their creativity,” she says. “The arts can be their journey for success in a career where they can inspire others for a lifetime.” Sean Murphy ’07 - Like many of his fellow performing artists, Murphy has been captured by the lure of New York City, where he moved following graduation from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln after receiving a bachelor’s degree in Music in Bass Performance. Murphy performs in a R&B/soul band that plays regularly in Manhattan and Brooklyn. “I love New York so far and can’t wait to see what other opportunities it brings,” he says. “Last Christmas, I played in a musical called Plaid Tidings. It was my first long run of a show that I’ve ever done.” Murphy has also played at an off-Broadway show as part of a theatre festival showcasing new musicals. “Pius definitely helped me grow as a person and an artist,” he says of his alma mater. “I am very grateful for how many groups and performances I was able to be involved in...marching band, symphonic band, jazz band, show choir band, choir, and was lucky enough to be in all four musicals.” Murphy adds: “Being able to play so many different types of music, and singing was very important in making me a better musician.” Maureen Fitzgerald ’05 - Anyone involved in theater knows what it takes behind the scenes to produce a quality performance, which is why directors, cast and crew are equally respected and honored among their peers. Fitzgerald, a successful costume designer for the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, knows this all too well. “I got involved with the Pius Players as a freshman and my first production was Godspell,” she recollects. “Although I would go on to perform in the shows in the following years, my first job was as a part of the hair and makeup crew.” It was there that Fitzgerald began to forge lifelong friendships. “I did Annie Leiter’s hair and makeup for Every Family Has One in 2002. I did her hair and makeup for her wedding almost 10 years later.” Fitzgerald would go on to be in every other main stage Pius Players production until graduation, was a Thunderette, and spent her senior year singing, dancing, and choreographing as a member of Spectrum Singers show choir. It was not until she entered Drake University as a BFA acting major that she “by happenstance” applied for and was hired as a costume technical assistant, and went on to take costume design classes. After graduation, she was accepted into the University of Connecticut MFA Costume Design program, under the guidance of Laura Crow, a Broadway veteran, who would be instrumental in mentoring Fitzgerald and helping her to break into the industry. “Although my time at Pius was primarily performance based, it was also the beginning of my career as a costume designer,” Fitzgerald reflects, adding that she designed and constructed a number of headpieces and costumes for various Pius Players productions. “I was always the girl with a project, and it was at Pius that I realized I wanted a life in the Theatre.” changed in the past 12 years, and to greet some of his old teachers who enjoyed watching their former student perform before millions on television. Harrison also continues to maintain the friendships he holds so dear from his Pius X days, and has enjoyed re-connecting with a great number of classmates through social media since his big national debut. “Many of my best friends in the whole world are those whom I roamed the halls with in high school,” Harrison says. And like many others who have graduated from Pius, the young performer has held fast to the faith that in part was formed during his high school years as he has pursued his career. “Always believe in yourself and have faith in the Lord to lead you to success,” he urges. “And never forget to give thanks to God every day.” academic success Your Support Builds State-of-the-Art Chemistry Lab by Sophia Werning Pius X Chemistry students and their teacher are finding the much needed improvement in its chemistry lab to be more efficient and creates a more conducive learning environment. The upgraded, modern lab space includes a new teacher demonstration area, modern student experiment stations, and many important safety features including an eyewash, emergency chemical shower, and fume hood. Chemistry students and their teachers at Pius X High School returned to class in August and were delighted to find a freshly renovated laboratory filled with new experiment stations and modern equipment. This greatly needed upgrade was made possible through successful fundraising efforts conducted by the school during the past year. In the summer of 2011, Pius X High School initiated a 3-phase plan to renovate its two aging chemistry labs due to new curriculum changes by the state of Nebraska requiring all high school students complete three years of science. The labs at the school had not been modernized since the school opened its doors in 1956. After receiving funding from grants and benefactors, Pius X highlighted their chemistry lab renovation during “Give to Lincoln Day”, a one-day online fundraising endeavor on May 17, 2012. Through this campaign, Pius X raised more than $102,500 and finished in first place in the total amount raised out of 187 nonprofits that participated. Remarkably, because of the demonstrated need to upgrade its aging labs, donors from all over the country helped Pius X raise the highest amount of online and offline funding among all participating non-profits on “Give to Lincoln Day”. “I am glad to donate to the Chemistry lab,” Pius X alumnus Wayne Schammel said in his remarks posted on the “Give to Lincoln Day” website. “In 1966, I took Chemistry at Pius with Miss (Yvonne) Schlautman. This was a turning point for me and led to a career as a research chemist.” Construction on the first of two chemistry labs began in the summer of 2012. This much needed improvement provides students and faculty with a more efficient, modern lab environment which includes an upgraded teacher demonstration table and new student experiment stations. An eyewash and emergency chemical shower were added and a state-of-the-art fume hood was installed. New cabinets, desks and a handicapped accessible lab station were added, as well as a new floor and ceiling. Additionally, greatly needed equipment storage and faculty office space were constructed to adjoin the two chemistry labs. “With the new chemistry lab classroom, we’ve already outnumbered the number of lab experiments done last year by this time,” notes Sharolyn Schneider, Science Department Chair at Pius X. “Last year, only half the class could do the experiment at a time, due to the lack of lab tables and space.” On behalf of her faculty, Schneider adds that she is deeply appreciative of the generous support of donors and benefactors who helped to make the science department’s dream of a new chemistry lab a reality. “As the first phase of our chemistry lab renovation came to completion, I was struck by two aspects of the project,” Pius X Principal Tom Korta reflects. “The first aspect was how in all of our discussions about the renovation, the focus always came back to student learning. The second aspect is the tremendous outpouring of financial support that we received from the Pius family, the Lincoln community and alumni supporters from across the country.” Korta is confident that the goal of impacting student learning will be realized through this important facilities improvement, both now and well into the future. Pius X is continuing its effort with the second and third phase of this important project, which will include physical renovations to the second lab anticipated in the summer of 2013, as well as the installation of computer technology units to be used for research and virtual demonstration planned for the following summer. piusx.net U 7 academic success Pius X Educators Study Bosnian Genocide English teacher Sandra Sullivan and World Geography teacher Shiela Sievert, pictured below at the fortress turret in Old Town, Dubrovick, Crotia, and at left with students from the Gimnazija Dobrinja High School in Sarajevo, spent part of their summer immersiging themselves in the history and social impact of the Bosnian Genocide of the 1990s and are now using the experience to enhance the learning experience for Pius X students in their classes. Two Pius X teachers explored the historic and social impact of the Bosnian Genocide of the 1990s this past summer. Through a Fund for Teachers fellowship, World Geography teacher Shiela Sievert and English teacher Sandra Sullivan travelled to Croatia and Bosnia to witness how the Balkan people have dealt with the aftermath of a modern genocide. “Our objective was to immerse ourselves in learning about the Bosnian Genocide and the residual ramifications of that conflict,” Sievert explains. “In doing so, we will build a sense of compassion and empathy in our student body as we have students at Pius X whose families experienced the atrocities firsthand.” Sullivan’s inspiration for the fellowship stemmed from her observation that “most of our student body lacks knowledge and a sense of gravity regarding the history, the changing geography, and the human conflict present in this region of the world.” The 12-day trip included visits to landmarks and historical sites that told the story of the events taking place in the region. Sievert notes “while in Sarajevo, we took a tour called ‘Times of Misfortune’ learning how people survived during the longest siege of a city in modern history.” Sullivan explains that during the four year conflict, the residents of Sarajevo took their lives into their own hands to venture out for food, water, and fuel. Citizens dug a tunnel under the airport to transport food to the starving Sarajevians. They also witnessed how this city used the 1984 Olympic Stadium as a mass grave for those who died from sniper fire and mortar shells. “Our tour guide, Hassan, actually lived 8 U piusx.net through the day that more than 11,000 Muslims were massacred. He escaped to the surrounding hills, walking in terror for five days without provisions to find a safe zone. This firsthand account was chilling and to see the memorial and thousands of marked graves in which bodies and parts of bodies had been recovered from mass graves was sobering,” Seivert recalls. An uplifting part of the tour inlcuded a visit to a Sarajevo high school. “We shared and compared our educational systems,” Sullivan says. “The students were so delightful, and we believe they understand how fortunate they are to be in such a beautiful school. Only 20 years earlier, many of their older relatives continued their education in the safe basements of apartment buildings.” Sievert and Sullivan’s educational tour concluded in Split, Croatia, which was turned into a city of refugees during the Balkan War. This ancient city housed the palace for Diocletian, one of the Caesars of the Roman Empire. “It was amazing to walk the streets, some of them literally thousands of years old,” Sullivan notes. The trip to the Balkans has made an immense, lasting impact on each of these educators, both personally and professionally. “Throughout our trip drivers, tour guides, waiters, store clerks, and hotel owners practically spewed their personal stories,” Sievert explains. Both teachers have expressed immense gratitude to the Fund for Teachers for giving them the opportunity to understand the history and present culture of the Balkans, and to develop an appreciation for the people of the region. They will be using their experiences to directly impact their students. Sievert has always covered the Balkan region in her World Geography class, however, there is only a page and a half dedicated to this very complex region in her textbook. “The fellowship cleared up questions that I had regarding the people of this region,” Sievert explains. “Now, I will be more equipped to teach my students with much more accuracy how and why ‘civilized’ people can act in such uncivilized ways in today’s modern world.” Sievert has instituted a Genocide Project where students research and present on one of the genocides from the 20th century. “These are important lessons for our students so that the atrocities of history may never be repeated,” she adds. Sullivan is using the experience in several ways. She is introducing a piece of literature that brings the history of the region and empathy for the survivors of the Balkan region to her curriculum. The Cellist of Sarajevo is a moving story of the plight of Sarajevians during the siege of 1992-1996. The unit will contain the historical background and first-hand accounts and visuals that the teachers collected from the region. The visit to the assassination point of Arch Duke Ferdinand will provide material for the World War I novel presently taught in Modern Literature. In composition, her students will have the opportunity to exchange letters with the students of Gimnazija Dobrinja High School in Sarajevo. athletic highlights State Champion Softball ongratulations to Pius X Softball Team Cfor claiming the Class B State Softball Championship. Pius X High School and our students have reaped great benefits from the generosity of our benefactors. Following are some highlights from this year that would not have been possible without your support. • Thanks to our very generous benefactors who have established endowed funds or scholarships, Pius X will be able to provide much needed financial aid to many students and their families who would not be able to afford the cost of tuition. The Pius Foundation will be awarding $32,000 in scholarships to 69 students for the 2012-2013 school year. • We have moved to Class A in many extra curricular sports and activities and, thanks to generous donors have completely refurbished one “Pius X is an amazing of our chemistry labs (room 200), updated our high school with locker, weight and wrestling rooms, and added additional visitor bleachers at Aldrich Field. dedicated teachers, staff, • An anonymous donor recently invested and administration. $200,000 for the benefit of the Band departOur children are blessed ment ($50,000) and the ABLE program ($150,000) which is intended to give extra to receive their high academic support to students. school education from this • Pius X High School has just received special tremendous institution!” recognition for Excellence in Catholic Identity by the Cardinal Newman Society’s National -Rhonda Litt, parent of three Pius X graduates: Catholic High School Honor Roll. Michelle Birkel Director of Development • The endowment for Pius X continues to be of great assistance to the school’s financial budget. We are grateful that $490,000 will be distributed to the high school for operating expenses for the 2012-2013 school year. As of June 30, 2012, our endowment was valued at over $11.3 million. Our challenge is to keep Catholic education affordable. One of the primary ways of doing this is by building our endowment. As our endowment increases, we are able to transfer more to the high school each year! • We have been blessed with a successful start to our annual Fund for Pius X campaign which is vital to building our school’s endowment and to keeping tuition affordable 2012-2013 Fund for Pius X for every student and their family. All of us in Lincoln are so blessed to have one of the (formerly annual fund/annual appeal) most affordable tuition rates in the nation ($1,500 vs. $8,900 nationally). This is made possible only through ongoing and generous support of our local parishes, the Fund for Pius X, our annual gala - BOLT, the Booster Club, and other fund raising efforts. As of November 27, 2012, $259,569.72 has been received (74% of our $350,000 goal). Thank you! Lastly, please consider remembering Pius X High School when making your estate plans. The Pius X endowment is a wonderful way to leave your legacy with the school and impacts all 1,100 students! Your support will continue forever to keep our Catholic schools secure financially. They are words that have come to life through the time, talent and treasure shared with Pius X High School and many other Catholic organizations by Alan Slattery. Fittingly, Alan was honored with the 2012 Distinguished Stewardship Award at the annual Friends of Pius X Appreciation Reception on August 19, 2012. “Alan has always exercised his postion as the Pius X advisory board chairman with complete professionalism, in good humor, and with more kindness than necessary,” stated Karen Largen ’81, who nominated Slattery for the award. “As a married couple, the Slatterys are a perfect example of living out the Gospel in Christian stewardship.” Alan and his wife, Ruth, have served on the BOLT Committee with Alan being the Master of Ceremonies for the last three years. He has also been in leadership positions in several major fund drives for Pius X. “Through 40 years of marriage, I have admired and loved how much it means to him to serve and to give,” commented Ruth. “He has always been so appreciative of the opportunities Catholic education has provided for him that he has always wanted to help Alan Slattery was nominated for the Distinguished Stewardship others have that same opaward by fellow Pius X High School Board of Advisors member, Karen Largen’ 81. If you have been putting off creating an estate plan or haven’t updated it in years, upcoming changes in tax laws might lead you to consider updating your plan before the end of 2012. Analysts suggest that even if Congress acts before the end of the year, the amount of wealth that you may pass on to your children or grandchildren before being subject to gift or estate tax will likely decrease. Thus the historically high gift and estate tax exclusion amount ($5.12 million) in 2012 is largely considered a “use it or lose it” opportunity to transfer gifts in 2012 rather than leaving gifts to your family by bequest in your will. Income and capital gains taxes will both increase and the estate, gift and generation skipping tax (the shift of property by gift or at death to a person who is two or more generations below that of the person granting the gift) exemptions will change dramatically in 2013. The basic exclusion amount (the amount you can own before your estate is subject to estate taxes) lowers from $5.12 million in 2012 to $1 million in 2013. The top estate tax rate also increases from 35 percent to 55 percent. Expected Tax Changes Gift and Estate Tax Exclusion “The Unified Credit” Highest Gift and Estate Tax Rate Annual Gift Tax Exclusion Highest Capital Gains Tax Rate Highest Income Tax Rate Also, taxpayers considering a significant charitable gift should be aware that it may be more advantageous to make their gift in 2012 because 2013 ushers back in rules that limit itemized deductions at certain adjusted gross income levels. Federal Tax Laws Affecting Estate Planning in 2013: • Capital gains and income taxes raised: Capital gains taxes will increase from 15 to 20 percent and the top income tax rate has been raised from 35 percent in 2012 to 39.6 percent in 2013. • Gift tax exemption lowers: The gift tax exemption lowers from a $5.12 million exclusion amount to $1 million in 2013. The top gift tax rate will rise from 35 to 55 percent. The annual gift tax exclusion (the amount you can give to anyone gift tax-free each year) 2012 2013 $5.12 Million 35% $13,000 15% 35% $1.0 Million 55% $13,000 20% 39.60% remains at $13,000 ($26,000 for married couples). Because of the tax-exempt nature of 501(c)(3) charitable organizations like Pius X High School, charitable giving may present income, capital gains, and gift & estate tax benefits particularly for those holding highly appreciated assets like an IRA or agricultural real estate. To learn more about how the 2013 tax changes may affect your family’s estate plan and how a gift to the Pius Foundation through a charitable trust, IRA designation, gift annuity, or bequest may be beneficial to you please consult your trusted tax advisor/ attorney and contact Michelle Birkel at the Pius X Foundation at 402.488.1046 or Joshua Shasserre at the Catholic Foundation at 402.488.2142. piusx.net U 11 building a strong foundation New Scholarship Celebrates God’s Gifts by Deb Hoge A Pius X education is special in many ways - academic excellence, opportunity to discover ones talents and abilities, development of the Catholic faith, our relationship with the Holy Trinity, and many other ways. One alumnus, Rex Mudd ’61, believed his Pius X education was truly a ‘golden spoon’ in life. “Our 50th reunion struck me as being very similar to life – much too short,” Mudd wrote in a letter to his classmates. “I am struck by the accomplishments of our class – story after story of the lives we have led show a pattern of accomplishments by everyone.” “I was not born with a golden spoon but believe that we were all blessed with the gold spoon given to us with a Pius education and the Pius experience in our critical formative years,” he contin- ued. “While I believe we were a superior class, I recognize we were not unique when reading the accomplishments of subsequent classes. I marvel how Pius X turns out quality young men and women ready to enter the real world. Few start life with the advantage of the education we received.” This past year, he ensured that this same ‘golden spoon’, a Pius X education, would be available and affordable for generations of Pius X students for years to come by establishing the Golden Spoon Scholarship. For decades, Pius X students and families have been blessed by those who believe in the mission of Pius X and positive attributes of a Catholic education. The endowed scholarships established through the Pius X Foundation allow many families, who may otherwise not be able to afford a Catholic education, to attend Pius X and develop and grow in God’s love. Mudd established the Golden Spoon Scholarship to help students realize that even though they may not have been born into wealth or financial security, each of them is born with unique talents, demonstrated by their academic accomplishments. Mudd asked that with the awarding of the scholarship each year, the recipient will receive a certificate that includes some very powerful truths: “The golden spoon given to you by God is a fine mind and a keen intellect. This scholarship is for you to develop your mind, grow your faith, develop your skills and most of all enjoy your Pius experience as you transition to adulthood. We salute your achievement and hope that with continued success into the distant future you may be inspired to help a similar outstanding student that would benefit from a Pius X education.” Saturday • April 20, 2013 A milestone was passed with last year’s BOLT event - in the past 27 years, you have raised over $4 million dollars for Pius X High School. We are blessed and humbled. Your support of Kings, Queens, Bishops...BOLT 2012 provided Pius X with $242,000 in assistance with capital improvements, reducing the debt on the new kitchen expansion, and providing support for the Booster Club. The funds raised at this year’s event will continue to retire the kitchen debt and support Pius X sports and activites through the Booster Club. Please save the date and join us on Saturday, April 20, 2013, as Pius X High School hosts the 28th annual BOLT benefit dinner and live and silent auctions. We are excited to announce the theme for this spring’s gala, “BOLT Creating a Masterpiece”. Our gifted volunteers are sketching out inspired ideas and preparing our paint palettes to make it an evening to remember. We have wonderful auction items as well as the famous lottery, with cash prizes totaling $15,000. We are sure you will not want to miss the party. ~2013 BOLT Committee Deb Schulte, BOLT Director www.piusx.net/bolt 12 U piusx.net Lottery tickets on sale January 20th W e are extraordinarily proud to have been able to pass on the legacy of Catholic education to our children. As native rural Nebraskans with large families educated in much smaller Catholic schools, we know how much our parents sacrificed to support our education. And, we know that Catholic education is a natural extension of the values and behaviors that we in turn as parents have strived to instill in our own children. It is with gratitude and thanksgiving to God for the gift of Catholic faith to our families, that we support Pius X, so that Catholic education can be made accessible and an enduring legacy for other families as well. - Gary and Kathy Hoebelheinrich: Parent of Alumni Sarah ’03, Hannah ’06, and Paul ’11 Annual Giving Review 2011-2012 Pius X Foundation • Pius X High School Endowed Scholarships Vince Aldrich Memorial Scholarship Timothy & Mary ’74 Knight Jim ’85 & Melinda Petrzilka Michael Anderson Memorial Scholarship Pat ’74 & Adaire Anderson Shannon Anderson ’78 John ’80 & Kelly ’80 Morehouse Ed Regelean ’60 Liam & Lorraine Barr Memorial Scholarship Deirdre Barr Msgr. Educating future leaders for our community and country is critical in these times of rapid cultural changes. Our children have had the opportunity to be taught by wonderful and dedicated Priests, Sisters, teachers and staff, for which we are grateful. Michael was born in Lincoln, Neb., in 1950. Along with his two sisters, he attended Blessed Sacrament School. For two years, he then pursued the discernment process for the priesthood at Our Lady of the Ozarks Minor Seminary in Carthage, Mo. Michael returned to Pius X High School for his junior and senior years. He earned a combined academic/athletic scholarship to Regis College in Denver, Colo., where he graduated as valedictorian in 1972. “Mike had many achievements when we were young,” commented Linda Sullivan, Mike’s cousin. “But one in particular that should not go unnoted was his acting skill, as demonstrated in his memorable performance as Marryin’ Sam in the 1967 Pius X production of L’il Abner. By all accounts, Mike stole the show.” Pursuing a medical career on a U.S. Navy scholarship, Michael graduated in 1975 with his MD from the University of Nebraska, and in 1978 completed a residency in Internal Medicine in New Orleans, La. After serving four years in the U.S. Navy, he worked in private practice for the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa. Michael had a profound, life-changing spiritual experience in Medjugorge, Yugoslavia in 1990. This experience changed the course of his life, and the lives of many, even thousands, of others, forever. In 1994, together with his wife, Gianna, the Mission of Mercy was launched. Mission of Mercy is an independent, community-based organization dedicated to providing “healing through Love”. Through 16 mobile medical clinics and many medical and non-medical volunteers, Mission of Mercy provides free medical and dental services and prescription medications to uninsured working poor, homeless and economically disadvantaged people. Now in its 19th year, the Mission of Mercy has served more than 85,000 patients in four states. “It’s been many years since I’ve had the Dr. Michael Sullivan ’68 (left) accepts the 2012 Pius X Outstanding Alumnus Award from Michelle Birkel, Director of Development, and Fr. Jim Meysenburg, Superintendent. good fortune to see my cousin in person, but I can certainly say that our entire family is inspired by what he’s doing for other people,” Rick continued to write. “He’s a talented doctor, but his medicine is secondary in his work to his love and respect for Christ’s people.” While Mission of Mercy seeks out and helps those who “fall through the cracks” of our traditional health care system, their mission statement focuses beyond medical care to restore dignity and provide “healing through love.” For Michael and Gianna, healing the spiritual wounds are as important or even more important than providing medical treatment. “Although a wide variety of medical and dental services for acute and chronic conditions, diagnostic studies and procedures both on site and in conjunction with area hospitals and clinical specialists, and medications are provided free of charge...our true product is love, not mere human love, but God’s love,” Michael and Gianna wrote in an essay entitled Where Does God Fit Into This For You? The complete essay is available on the Mission of Mercy web site: amissionofmercy.org. “My brother had a life changing spiritual experience that also inspired my husband Dave and I to deepen our Catholic faith,” said Maureen Liddle, Mike’s sister. Dave and Maureen were so moved that they accepted an invitation to become part of Mission of Mercy, moving their family from Seattle to Pennsylvania. Mike’s daughter, Chelsea (who has a one-year old son, Jaxson), explained the Mission of Mercy and her father’s service to others. “His patients come to Mission of Mercy seeking medical care, but leave with so much more because respect, dignity, and love have healing powers too. My father’s vision and example have inspired the staff and volunteers and have impacted the lives of countless patients.” His daughter Anne Marie agrees. “He really cares for all of his patients and loves them. Yes, my dad helps his patients with their medical needs, but he also does everything he can to help them emotionally and spiritually as well, whether that means telling a joke to put a smile on their faces or praying with them and for them.” “I cannot tell you how many awards Mike has received for his work as Mission of Mercy have none listed on its web site,” Rick continued. “In fact, you’ll have a hard time finding any information on Mike at the web site and I might guess that’s the way Mike thinks it should be.” Mike’s award biography pays tribute to what he values most. “Through this journey, Dr. Sullivan came to recognize and appreciate the strong foundation in faith that was laid in his family home, Blessed Sacrament School and Pius X High School. Unfortunately, he drifted from his faith for nearly twenty years. Through pain, suffering, loss and tears, he was brought to his knees, and discovered that all he had been given would be so much more fruitful when shared and offered in God’s love and for His greater glory.” piusx.net U 27 alumni today Through the Uprights Pius X Alumnus Greg Zuerlein Turns Heads in the NFL by Sophia Werning He’s living the dream that was predicted in the pages of the Pius X yearbook where he was named: Most likely to become a professional athlete. This past April, Greg Zuerlein ’06 was drafted in the 6th round of the National Football League by the St. Louis Rams. And during his first season, he wasted no time showcasing his remarkable talent as a football kicker, setting personal and NFL franchise records. That’s Just How We Grew Up Zuerlein is the youngest of five children born to Eugene and Eileen Zuerlein. He and his siblings - John ’97, Monica (Hansen) ’97, Sarah ’99 and Colleen ’02 - attended St. Joseph School and Pius X. Greg describes his upbringing as an environment grounded in the strong connections of family, friends and faith. “We all grew up in the same neighborhood within a block of each other,” Zuerlein says describing childhood friends. “And we still get together and hang out when I’m back home.” His Catholic faith is part of the bond that continues in his relationships today. “Being Catholic, everyone has the same general thought process in what I would say was a sheltered environment. That’s just how we grew up.” Zuerlein was a serious student who pursued academics as well as soccer and football in high school. It was during those years, he garnered the nickname “Greg The Leg”, a calling card now being used in national sports media to encapsulate the tremendous strength and remarkable length of his kicks. “I have absolutely no idea who started it,” Zuerlein says with a chuckle. “But sometime during my sophomore year, when I first started playing varsity, I would go out to kick and fans would start shouting over and over ‘Greg the Leg!’” But Zuerlein was equally committed to playing soccer year round. Head coach Tim Aylward has discouraged this over the years because club soccer and football seasons coincide. “I kind of had an idea he was playing, but it was a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell” situation,” Coach Aylward says with a smile. Zuerlein confirms this was the case, noting that he would sneak in soccer matches on the weekends, working around his Pius X football responsibilities. “It was great having Greg on the team” Aylward recalls. “He was a great competitor, and worked hard at being a top level kicker. We knew that anytime we got past 40 yards we had a chance to score.” 28 U piusx.net And score they did. During Zuerlein’s high school career that began in 2003, Pius X won a state championship in 2004, and were a state semifinalist Greg Zuerlein kicks a field team in goal at right at Pius X in 2005. Rounding out his athletic successes, he also was part of the 2006 Pius X state soccer championship team. You have to do things a little differently Zurelein’s favorite memories of Pius include football and soccer practices. “It was going on the field with all the guys every day, working hard to win games,” he reflects. “We had a lot of fun out there and developed a lot of good friendships.” He maintains connections with Dan Gonnerman, Anthony Kohel and Andrew Reifenrath, all 2006 graduates, and teammate Paul Aylward, Zuerlein’s football place holder during his junior and senior years. “I was supposed to be in [Paul’s] wedding but because of [NFL] fall camp I could not be in Lincoln,” Zuerlein says. Zuerlein then played three seasons at the University of Nebraska-Omaha before transferring to Midwestern Missouri State. That year, he set an NCAA record with 21 consecutive field goals, including two from 58 yards. Zuerlein credits his education and faith formation at Pius X with an “extremely large effect” on his life during college. “Pius is a great school,” he says. “When I got to college, I felt more than adequately prepared academically.” The values he learned at Pius X were a grounding factor. “Going from an all Catholic high school to a public college, you realize not everyone has the same views,” Zuerlein reflects. “You have to do things a little differently from what everyone else is doing. Pius helped instill in me that it’s okay to believe what we believe and to not go along with what everyone else may be doing.” It’s Well Within His Range When Zuerlein was drafted by the St. Louis Rams, he began turning heads as early as training camp, making 50+ yard field goals appear routine. Before the season began, he kicked a 64-yarder, astounding his coaches and pre-season observers. Rams’ Head Coach Jeff Fisher did not hesitate to call on Greg to attempt a 60-yard field goal on Sept. 30, 2012, in a close contest with the Seattle Seahawks. The historic kick instantly placed Greg in the NFL record books as one of only 11 kickers to ever achieve that range in a game and the first ever to hit two field goals over 50 yards in a single game. “I was on the headsets and I said, ‘Field goal,’ and somebody said ‘Field goal?’” Fisher says. “I said, ‘Yeah, it’s only 60. It’s well within his range.’” “It really wasn’t any different from any other kick,” a humble Zuerlein recalls having a second shot at a very rare accomplishment. “I was just so excited to get another opportunity to attempt it. I’ve only made two attempts in a game - the first one was at a Pius vs. Norris game and we had a lot of wind so that got blocked.” “Coach Fisher gave me that opportunity, and I am so grateful for that. And Coach Aylward did it at Pius.” How does it feel to be drafted into the NFL and to be in the national spotlight? “Everyone in my family was really excited, and it wouldn’t be different from everyone else,” Zuerlein says, adding with a chuckle: “My brother was kind of shocked. He continues to say that there are only 32 NFL kickers in the world, and he can’t believe I’m one of them.” Zuerlein has some advice to current students who are aspiring athletes. “The most important thing is to believe in yourself and your ability. Sometimes, things will not go your way, and people may not believe in you. Then, you start to doubt your ability, and want to give up. You have to really believe and know you can do it.” alumni today Bits & Pieces 1950s Robert McManus, 1953 Cathedral High School Graduate, and his wife, Grace, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 28, 2012. Dave Duden ’79 decided this year to celebrate the 34th anniversary of the first Pius X tennis team state championship by running his first Marathon in Hartford. He’s not sure why he decided to do this now, but seemed like the time to do it as Coach John Riggs celebrated his birthday around this time, and he, Coach O’Boyle, and Coach Kelley all provided inspiration in so many ways that they will never know. Dave’s sons continue to thrive in Lincoln, Jake began an internship at Ameritas in the actuarial department, and Will continues to be active in Sigma Nu fraternity. While back in Nebraska this last September, Dave was able to get a mile in on the Pius X track as part of his training for the marathon. 1990s Daehoon (Derek) Kim ’99 stopped by Pius X in June 2012 for a tour and to show his wife around his old high school. They were able to see the many changes that have taken place since he was last at Pius X in 1999. Derek and Minhee Chang were married on June 19, 2010.
