Welcome music fans to Music City,
this year is gearing up to be a smash

Angel Mary and The Tennessee Werewolves, a new family
trio, brings a rebel yell to Country music. They bring the rowdy
back to Country. With the cool collective sounds of old fashion
dixie roots, bluegrass picking, heavy electric guitars and edgy
lyrics. This Trio has given a new definition to Country Music,
by launching the new sound of Country Rock. Angel Mary and The Tennessee Werewolves bring the rowdy
back in Country. With the cool collective sounds of old fashion
dixie roots, bluegrass picking, heavy electric guitars and edgy
lyrics.
The natives of Hendersonville, TN have only been performing
as a family since November 2011, but music is something that
flows through their blood. Collectively, their influences range
from Motley Crue to Waylon Jennings to the Marshall Tucker
Band. However, if there’s one artist whose music made more of
an impact than any other, it would have to be Johnny Cash.
What was it about the music of the “Man In Black?” Angel
Mary says anyone can relate. “I feel like he didn’t edit
himself,” she says. “What he said was real. If someone told
him to do it different, he wasn’t going to do it different. He was
going to do it his way. Just listening to his lyrics alone reaches
everyone, because we’ve all gone through certain heartbreaks.
He’s touched everyone in that way – country, rock and roll,
and even rap. The things that Johnny Cash has said are what
a rapper would say today. He touched such a broad base of
people, and I would hope that
with our music, we
could touch someone
who might not listen to
country.” In fact, their latest single is a
rollicking cover
of the Cash
standard “Folsom
Prison Blues,” co-produced by
John Carter Cash. Christian says
there are several
connections
between
them and
the Cash
sound –
and family.
“The name
Angel
Mary & The
Tennessee
Werewolves
derived from
Johnny Cash’s
song ‘The
Beast In Me,’
NashvilleMusicGuide.com6
which is where the werewolf side comes from. When we were
in between houses, my parents started taking us to Cowboy
Church, and it was there that we became friends with Joanne,
Johnny’s sister. She opened up her home to us, and let us live
there for awhile.”
Christian picks up the story. “I had met John Carter in town,
and told him about the name of the band, and how it was
derived from his dad. He looked up our music, and liked it,
Angel Mary wrote him a letter one day, asking if we could
record it, and he gave us permission. He invited us to record it
at Cash Cabin, co-produced it, and played acoustic guitar on
it.”
With their summer tour schedule about to heat
up, Verado Records groupAngel Mary and the Tennessee
Werewolves (AMTW) made time for one more home town
performance, providing live entertainment for Special
Olympics Tennessee’s opening ceremony celebration
at Lipscomb University’s Bison Square on Saturday night,
May 17th. Performing a set of originals (including latest
single “Folsom Prison Blues”), the trio also took time to sign
autographs, getting to know some of the athletes.
“We had the opportunity to meet several of Special Olympic
Tennessee’s athletes in February and felt an instant connection
with them,” said Antoine Wolf, bass player and vocalist for
AMTW. “As artists our goal is to inspire others through our
music... In reality, those
athletes are the true
inspiration.”
“The energy at Bison Square on
Saturday was like none other we’ve
experienced,” said Christian Wolf,
drummer and vocalist for AMTW. “It was
a true party - we’re honored to have been a
part of it and thankful for
the friendships we made
throughout the process.”
AMTW is currently at
work on a new album,
due out later this year.
They’ll also take part in
this year’s CMA
Music
Festival, both
performing
and hosting a
booth at Fan
Fair X in
Nashville’s
new Music
City Center.
With an unparalleled passion
for country music, it comes
as no surprise that artist Matt
Farris’s career has gotten off
to a promising start. A heart
for helping those in need
paired with an incredible talent and positive energy has
allowed for the early and natural growth of a significant
fan base. All of these characteristics have given Farris a
strong foundation on which
to build his career – one that,
at the hands of another, was almost instantaneously taken away.
Entertaining family and friends from the moment he spoke his first
word, Farris’s passion for entertainment has always been apparent.
With an early exchange of lullabies for classic country tunes sung by
his mother Sandra, the Lake Havasu City, Arizona¬native has ever
since gravitated toward the genre.
His plight for country music stardom, however, nearly came to a tragic
end when an altercation with two strangers trying to steal his father’s
truck left both Farris and his father shot.
The incident put the importance of family and music into perspective
for Farris, who formed a band with his father and grandfather – both
musicians themselves. Eager to get back to his music, Farris began
playing out around Phoenix, continuing to build his career and fan
base. In 2010, he surprised the band by entering the Colgate Country
Showdown, making it into the Arizona State Finals. Encouraged by
his success, Farris made the move to Nashville to further
his career in 2011.
His first single, Redneck Radio, saw placement in both the Billboard
Indicator (peak #56) and Music Row (peak #) charts, as well as holding a position at #1 on the Indie World Country chart four weeks in
a row. His current single, Resident Redneck, continues to ascend and
was recently nominated for industry trade New Music Weekly’s New
Music Country Single of the Year Award. Radio and industry trades
aren’t the only ones that have taken notice – on February 1st, the cast
of Country Music Television’s (CMT) My Big Redneck Family
sported Matt Farris shirts on an all ¬new episode.
Farris continues to play live as much as possible, sharing the stage
with Darryl Worley, Trent
Tomlinson, Adam Gregory, Keith Anderson and Colt Ford. This summer he opened for Jason
Aldean, Tyler Farr, Joe Diffie, and Gord Bamford on the main stage at
Country Thunder in Florence, Arizona. Despite a full schedule,
Farris still finds time to give back, supporting both the Make a Wish
Foundation and the American Cancer Society – focusing on Breast
Cancer Awareness. After losing friend Denise to the disease, he started
Denise’s Day – an annual benefit in his hometown which can be seen
at www.denisesday.org
“Giving back is extremely important to me. I love everything about
what I do. But, more thananything, I love that it allows me a platform
to better help those that need it. My music gives others a voice... I love
my job.”

Breelan Angel’s “Dirty Little Secrets” Hashtracking
NPG
PUBLIC RELATIONS
NashvilleMusicGuide.com8
TM
MisBhavin’ Records is pleased to announce “Dirty Little Secrets,”
the much anticipated and highly requested full-length studio album
from its flagship artist Breelan Angel, debuts on Tuesday, June
24, 2014. The album features 10 original tracks, all of which were
co-written by Breelan, as well as cover photography by Todd
Purifoy and the graphic design talents of Robert Hudnall of
Lubbock, Texas.
Showcasing Breelan’s unique vocal style and ability to write strong
and catchy lyrics,”Dirty Little Secrets” was produced by Ray Barnette at Sound Emporium and Omni Studios in
Nashville, Tenn. Kathy Douglas ofindieExtreme is spearheading
the album›s global distribution to iTunes, Amazon and all
digital retailers worldwide through the premier distribution
company INgrooves-Fontana. Pre-orders of “Dirty Little
Secrets” will feature an immediate download of the album›s
impassioned opening number, “Walk of Shame.”
Hailing from Baytown, Texas, Breelan’s standout single, “Halfway
To Wasted,” climbed to a Top 40 position on the MusicRow Country
Breakout chart and Top 50 on Billboard’s Indicator chart. Breelan,
a regular on the writing circuit in Nashville, co-wrote with some of
Nashville’s finest songwriters and is honored to be able to include
the credits of such premier hitmakers as Clay Mills (“Don’t Think
I Don’t Think About It,” “Fall”), Marty Dodson(“Must Be Doin’
Somethin’ Right,” “Everybody Wants to Go To Heaven”), Greg
Barnhill(“Walkaway Joe”), Shane Stevens («American
Honey»), and others from Nashville’s vast circle of talent.
“We have been working on ‘Dirty Little Secrets’ for the past year
and are very excited for its release,» stated Breelan. «Various
styles are represented as my influences stem from listening to both
mainstream and classic country artists. Each song is a representation
of emotions I›ve felt and/or situations I’ve experienced up to this
point in my life, so I hope people will appreciate the variety on the
album and see their lives in the music as well.”
A compilation that highlights Breelan’s range of talents,”Dirty
Little Secrets” is a true testament of her individuality and living “out
loud” style. From the fiery warning to “that girl”in the opener “Walk
of Shame,” to the last hopeful note of “One More Song,” the album
flows effortlessly to tell a story of a young woman striking out on
her own with an open heart and keen mind.
Breelan’s songwriting skills shine on the title track, a free-flowing
tune about family secrets in a small town, while ballads like “It Ain’t
Easy Lovin’ Me” and “She Made Your Bed” provide a glimpse
into the emotional vocal power and delivery displayed at her live
shows.”Dirty Little Secrets” leaves no experience untouched
and Breelan’s fresh sound and insightful lyrics are a welcome
addition to a music scene ripe for exemplary female talent.
Ray Barnette, an Emmy-winning producer who learned much
of his production skills from the legendary Carl Perkins and has
helped many young aspiring artists (including Billy Dean) develop
their “sound,” is confident of Breelan’s ability to deliver a fresh
country sound with a Texas twist.
“There are lots of singer/songwriters, but with Breelan, it was such
a pleasure to find myself working with an artist who is world class
on both counts,” stated Barnette. “I know you’ll agree once you’ve
heard her album, ‘Dirty Little Secrets.’ I can’t wait to record with
her again.”
The album’s second single, “Double Standards,” an up-tempo twosteppin’ tune about how women are constantly striving to be “good
and bad at the same time” while trying to overcome society’s
stereotypical boundaries, was released to radio April 7th under the
direction of Mark Maynard of Momentum Nashville. As it climbs
the national charts quicker than the previously released singles, the
song has become a fan favorite.
As an energetic and prolific live performer, Breelan has had
the opportunity to play at several noted venues including
Houston›s Firehouse Saloon, McGonigel’s Mucky Duck,
House of Blues and Hard Rock Cafe, Nashville’s National
Underground and Wormy Dog Saloon in Oklahoma City. Her
dynamic personality, bright smile and spirited attitude are always
front and center as she and her band take the stage at such noted
events as theHouston Livestock Show and Rodeo World’s
Championship BBQ Cook-off, 100.3 KILT’sGirls With Guitars,
Pinktober and Saturday In The Park, Crosby Fair & Rodeo, and
Galveston’s well attended Lone Star Rally. As a performer at these
and many other events,Breelan has had the privilege of playing
with such legacy acts as Loretta Lynn, Johnny Lee and Don
Williams as well as hitmakers Travis Tritt, Doug Stone, Easton
Corbin, Joe Nichols, Jack Ingram, Chris Cagle, Kevin Fowler,
Randy Houser, Don Williams, Randy Rogers, Aaron Watson, Cody
Johnson and many others.
Breelan showed a natural talent at an early age with ballet, tap
and jazz. As she grew older, piano lessons, choir and theater
productions crafted and developed her vocal talent, demeanor
and stage presence. Pursuing a country music career on a fulltime level,Breelan hones her skills by filling her calendar writing
in sessions with Nashville›s best and adding regular tour dates to
continually introduce her music to new audiences. With just the
right blend of southern charm and modern country rock, Breelan is
poised to break onto the national country scene as “one to watch.”

The Beauty of Music Brings Justice for All
“Justice for All” is more than a term used by television
talk show host Sherri Justice. From Huntsville,
Alabama, Justice travels all over the country to
interview upcoming and major artists for the Country
music show The Beauty of Music. The show is
broadcasted with the online multi-media video stationeWave TV, which is part of Ariel Media Group, LLC.
a masterpiece. Justice films a complete and professional
country music video, with the same camera crew that
works with major artists.
A featured broadcast is aired once a week and the
“beauty” of this broadcast is that can be viewed anytime
online. The artists also have the ability of using the
video for their personal advertising and promotions.
Graduating from The Master’s School of Beauty, Justice
has combined her love for personal beauty and Country
music to help careers hit the charts. Justice has worked
with several major artists including The Oak Ridge
Boys, Charlie Daniels, Mickey Gilley, Willie Nelson,
Lucas Nelson, Ronnie Dunn, Wade Hayes, Lorrie
Morgan, Taylor Made, Chris Cavanaugh, Lucas Hogue,
Stella Parton, Gordon Mote, and Grammy Nominated
Songwriter, Steve Oliver, with The Time Jumpers/Vince
Gill.
Clients have the opportunity of making The Beauty
of Music a lifetime career partner by selling ads for
each show, which is combined with nine-30 second
commercials. “I split all advertising dollars right
down the middle with the artists to help them build a
reputable career,” said Justice. “I make no profit off of
the advertising; it all goes back into the show.” Every
aired broadcast gives artists the opportunity to make
money and keep their business financially afloat.
Story by Amanda Pruitt
According to thebeautyofmusic.com, “Some of Sherri’s
best scenes behind the camera include: George Strait,
Rascal Flatts, Hank Williams Jr., Brantley Gilbert,
Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Tracy Lawrence, Kris
Kristofferson, Kid Rock, and Sheryl Crow.”
As a single mother of two, eleven-year-old twin boys,
Justice is constantly working on the road and at home
diligently making a name for The Beauty of Music
across the nation. The Beauty of Music, along with
ewave TV, is a one-year-old company that started from
scratch and now has 50,000 views and 100 million
impressions. Over the past year, the company has
increased their audience to 3.3 million views and 1.1
billion impressions through social media and search
engines.
Once the stations ratings increased, Justice began
receiving phone calls from major media outlets for
appearances with musical legends. Major artists from
Justice’s lineup and behind the scenes include Kellie
Picker, Clint Black, Big and Rich, Lee Greenwood,
Jamie Johnson and The Grascals. Justice believes her
show is recognized by audiences because artists have a
way of branding themselves in a different light. “I love
giving artists the opportunity to brand their careers right
next to living legends,” Justice explains.

NMG Exclusive Interview with
Nashville Duo “The Darlins
written by Sherryl Craig
our motors to get
started. We have been so blessed to receive the Breedlove endorsement for our musical
instruments which is phenomenal. And of course the recent writing with Anthony
Smith.
NMG – In speaking of your recently received, amazing endorsements. Tell
us about them and how these endorsements will help you in the
future with your career?
Jude: We are very grateful for our recent endorsement with Breedlove guitars. I have needed another guitar for years and this is a
really a great blessing. I like to tune in alternative tunings and that
is hard to do during a show with only one guitar. I feel that Breedlove has the quality and sound we need to take us to a new level.
Erinn: Breedlove makes incredible mandolins, the sound quality
is very pure and will be an asset to our current sound. We already
received a few wonderful instruments and enjoyed them at our
Bluebird show on April 26th.
NMG - I understand you will be opening for Blake Shelton on the
Blake Shelton Cruise. Tell me about the show and where it will be
and what thoughts you have about this opportunity.
From a personal prospective country music has and always will
be the best genre in the music industry. It’s roots run deep from
the sounds of old favorites like iconic legends Earnest Tubb,
Hank Williams, and Patsy Cline. But for some of us it’s the duo’s,
the partners, that brought out the magical harmonies we so greatly
love even still today. In years past it was Conway and Loretta,
Homer and Jethro, Dolly and Porter, and of course the Bellamy
Brothers. Now it’s Lorrie Morgan and Pam Tillis, Brooks and
Dunn, Montgomery Gentry, and Sugarland.
These ladies are beautiful inside and out and when they sing,
Wow!! You’ll be a fan for life from day one. I guarantee it.
This past year has been a huge year for Jude and Erinn and in
this exclusive interview the ladies discuss a few of those exciting
events in more detail.
NMG – 2013 was just the beginning of the roller-coaster ride and
now the beginning of 2014 has been heating up for both of you
especially with the opportunity to open for Montgomery Gentry
and all the songwriting with several of Nashville’s heavy hitters
like Anthony Smith. Could you give me the top five newest accomplishments over the last six months and how that has been?
Jude and Erinn: Opening the NAMM show in Anaheim California was a blast and
filming an upcoming episode for Balcony Television at The
Hard Rock Cafe, Tuesday, May 6th was extremely exciting. Being asked to be
part of the Blake Shelton tour, cruise for 2015 has us revving up
NashvilleMusicGuide.com12
Jude & Erinn: We are blown away by this opportunity. We will
be on the cruise with Blake and a few other major artists to the
Bahamas 2015. This is a major break for us and we will be opening all the shows, I believe eight in all, so we will be working the
entire trip. We will be doing different shows,
both acoustic and with full band. We are both big fans of his so we
are really looking forward to getting to know him better. I mean
hanging out with Blake to the Bahamas, What??? AMAZING!
NMG – It’s so nice to always hear from The Darlins and keep
up with all the amazing things happening for you both right now.
So in closing tell me how all the exciting events of the last five
months have changed/improved the course of your writing, your
new CD and your outlook on the rest of the year.
Jude and Erinn : We believe the success we are having is adding
even more motivation to all we do. We are so inspired to do more
and more. We feel that our writing is getting stronger and better
and we are really growing in leaps and bounds.

Eric Lee Beddingfield “I Just Want To Play”
Close friend to all who know him and outstanding country
music entertainer Eric Lee Beddingfield has just released his
newest single, “ I Just Want To Play” and I have to say it’s a
winner.
Long time country music performer, devoted father and
husband, Eric is no stranger to the music industry. As a child
Eric was introduced to the magic of country music by his
Dad who was also a talented musician, and who educated
Eric on the sounds of Waylon, Merle, Cash, and of course his
favorite, George Jones.
His professional career spans back to 2007 when he released
his first album on a Miami based label called Double
Diamond. In 2008 he was in the spot light on the watch
list for having three top 40 hits and being the most played
independent artist on secondary radio.
When Double Diamond Records closed their doors Eric
began working with Kent Wells, who has produced songs
and also worked with Dolly Parton, Keith Whitley, and Hank
Williams Jr.; In 2010 Eric released a new album called “
This Life Ain’t For Everybody” with Rebel Dawg Records.
Filled with the raw and in your face truth of life this album
solidified Eric Beddingfield and his career in country music.
The first single from that album “The Gospel According To
Jones” propelled Beddingfield straight in to his own “living”
dream. The song was of course written with his long time
idol George Jones in mind, hence the title, and George Jones,
being one of Eric’s childhood idols would later go on to not
only sing on the album but appear in the video with Eric.
Little did they know at the time the impact the song and the
video would have on the fans. For the next several years the
song would be played at the opening of George’s shows.
What an honor for Eric this must have been.

Just recently released this past April, is his new single, “I Just
Want To Play” and in keeping with the man of country music
as we know him, it’s real, true country. An amazing song that
I know all the fans will love.
The song is down available on Itunes and the hope is to have
it released to radio in June. In the past it has always been
secondary radio where his music has been released but this
time ELB is shooting for the big dogs. So keep your ears
tuned in for the in demand new single, “I Just Want to Play.”
Eric will also be appearing again this year at various Nascar
events. You can check out the websites listed below for
further information on where and when those will be and if
you live in the Nashville area you can catch Eric and some
of his close friends playing well known venues like 12th and
Porter and 3rd and Linsley. As all independent artists know the road is a lot more
stressful and tougher when your doing things “your way” and
keeping things real the way “you” want them to be. But Eric
Beddingfield is living proof that if you stick to your roots,
stick to your values, and do it the way you believe it should
be done, by staying true to yourself, in the long run.....it
makes it all worth the bumps in the road.
For more information on ELB and the newest release “ I Just
Want To Play” visit the following links:

Through out the next few years Eric managed to continuously elbrocks

My Friends Call Me Geoff

time I heard these guys, I fell in love with their
music and the upbeat rhythms,” said Geoff.
By: Amanda G. Pruitt
Photo Credit: Jordan Edgcomb, and Derek Stinson.
Constantly breaking down the “Nashville Walls” with
his music, Geoffrey Buell or “Geoff”, of Nashville
released his second professional album, My Friends Call
Me Geoff, on April 29 at the Fiddle and Steel Guitar
Bar. Geoff shared the stage with ACM Steel Guitarist of
the Year, Steve Hinson; Darryl Preston currently Trent
Tomlinson’s guitarist but who has also played for Tracey
Lawrence, Daryle Singletary, Neal McCoy, and Rhett
Akins; and Sound Engineer Jody Maphis who has played
for Marty Stuart, Gary Allen, and Earl Scruggs. Rick
Tiger was also in attendance and has had songs recorded
by The Western Flyers and Joe Nichols.
Originally from Buffalo, Wyoming, Geoff was born into
a musical family. His mother, Linda Buell has written
songs for many artists and has accomplished recordings
by Billy Ray Cyrus, Clinton Gregory, Ray Price, Johnny
Paycheck, and Janie Fricke. At a very young age, Geoff
has had the pleasure of meeting several stars such as Tim
McGraw and Joe Diffie, but he has always been inspired
by Mel McDaniel and John Anderson. “From the first

Moving back and forth from Nashville to
Wyoming from the age of nine, Geoff did not
always dream of playing music. In high school
he was an “outdoors kinda guy” and he loved
playing sports but attending college was not
at the top of his priority list. He soon made
the big leap back to Nashville permanently in
2006 to pursue a career in music.
downtown
Over little time and with the help from family
and friends, Geoff learned to play the steel
guitar and he began to sing. He recorded a
“rough demo” for the pleasure of his family
and almost overnight his demo song, White
Collar Blues, became one of the most requested
songs with KLGT of Wyoming.
Geoff has shared the stage with country greats
such as The Western Underground, Clinton
Gregory, Jay Demarcus (Rascal Flats),
Rodney Atkins and Lady Antebellum. He is
completely focused in his music right now and
is determined to make a name for himself. “In
my mother’s time, to be a female lead singer
was difficult and today it has become more
challenging for everyone - not just women,”
said Buell. “My mother’s personality, her amazing vocals
and writing skills should have helped her but I’ve learned
that is not always what the industry is looking for.”
According to Geoff, the competition in Nashville gets
harder daily just because there are so many artists that
will play for free- therefore will not hire good bands to
entertain their crowds. Getting your name and music
heard in Nashville is difficult. “So many places out here
just want to sell beer and hear the holler and swallerbefore they want to hear some good music,” said Geoff.
“Making a living and doing music at the same time is
very hard to juggle, but I love it and do not want anything
else.”
Paying his dues one day at a time, Geoff’s new album
focuses on getting his name out to industry professionals
and fans of country music. If you love the type of artist
that throws out the rule book and just wants to have fun,
Geoff is the new artist to add to your playlist. He has
big goals of getting a publishing deal, a booking agency
and a record deal- but in the meantime- He’s just being
Geoff. For more information or to follow Geoff, visit

A very strong voice is demonstrated in this album and will be enjoyed by
traditional country music, bluegrass and blues lovers…nationwide. The album
consists of all original songs written by Amanda and it takes you through different
twists and turns of everyday life. My only critique to this album is that Amanda
needs to write more and get outside the box. My favorite songs, “What They Tell
Me” and “Read between the Lines”, could definitely be on the radio with the
right support and publishing group. Amanda needs to strengthen her writing and
her imagination. With her raspy-original voice and the proper exposure, some of the songs from this album could
definitely be seen at the top of the charts.
Geoffery Buell ▪ “My Friends Call Me Geoff” ▪ www.geoffbuell.com
I loved this album because of the country twang and energetic upbeats that Geoff
demonstrates. I would consider Geoff being the “real deal” in his writing and
vocal style. Geoff relates to his audience in his songs and really makes the listener
believe that the songs are about you. The entire album make you live in the
moment. The album is full of songs that most country music fans could turn on
and walk away to allow the repeat button to do its job. Your money will be well spent when purchasing this album
or buying tickets to his show. NashvilleMusicGuide.com20
The old saying goes don’t judge a book by the cover means a lot here. My first
look at the cover of a middle aged man - that I don’t recognize from a non major
label - and I thought it’s going to be a rough one here. I found out by the second
song, I was wrong. Tony Stampley has it going on. I’m very glad that I don’t
judge songs by the cover. This guy has a smooth voice and a good way of proving
it. Every song on this albulm is as good, if not better than the one before it. Not
a bad song here at all. When he gets on a roll, he’s rolling. This album if given
the chance, will go like wild fire - fast and furious. With the right backing Tony
Stampley will be a chart climber. Thirteen cuts to his name with Hank jr. this guy has the songs, the voice and the

Wow! Talk about a blast from the past. Almost couldn’t sit down to write a review
on her because I was spending time dancing with my wife. This girl has it going
on. This album is one that can be listened to until it is worn out. In my opinion
this girl can really make it on her own. A strong voice runs deep in her family
heritage, shes very prideful of her mother - Tammy Wynette. She will do well
with her own music if you like traditional country music. I have never seen her
live but you can bet I will.

Three years in the making, this album certainly has a lot of time put in it. The
songs here are danceable, but Chris does not seem to be energetic about them. He
has a very good voice, but does not seem to broadcast it. Chris doesn’t seem to
put his heart into the performance. In my opinion, when you sing a song you’re
in the song and you feel it, and you want your audience to feel it. However, this
album does not deliver that.

Bright Lights, Big City
Kali Nolen Knows It All
the 2014 NMG festival issue. Kali Nolen is a makeup artist and stylist to the Stars. She has worked in Hollywood,
in Nashville, in Vegas and anywhere they needed her
to be. She loves what she does. Her true passion is
on the stage, though. She has performed all over, in
Vegas, she saw her name in lights and could not get
enough. Kali even writes her own songs and has
appeared in multiple movies and shows.
Nolen lived in Nashville for three years, where
she was a stylist by day and an entertainer
by night. “I became a permanent fixture on
Broadway, performing at Tootsies and all the
other honky tonks,” said Nolen. Although
Nolen has had many amazing experiences in Nashville, to the extent of driving
The General Lee in the CMA Parade and
performing with Tracy Lawrence, Darryl Worley, Marty Stuart and many others during benefit/charity concerts - she
wanted more! “I appreciate all the opportunities, but at that time in my life, I
knew there was more that I needed to
achieve,” she states.
Nolen began working with BB King
and hosting the LIVE show at BB
Kings- Nashville, which is where
a spark was lit. “I love rock’n’roll
and blues,” she said. “I’ve always
sang country music just because
of my family heritage of farmers,
but I always loved Elvis.” Nolen’s great-grandmother, a huge
Elvis fan, never got to see her
perform. Nolen is honored to be
able to follow in Elvis’ footsteps in memory of her granny. Nolen went on to headline
her own Rock’n’Roll Soul
Show at The Rio in Las Vegas. “I was so humbled when
I saw my name in lights,” she
said. “Out of the millions of
lights that are already there…I
felt my name was the brightest.”

Through her long journey in the
entertainment industry, Nolen has
had many struggles to over
come. From filming her first
television commercial with
Garth Brooks in Broken Arrow, OK, to now walking the
red carpets of Hollywood; No-
len has made a name to be proud of.
Kali Nolen is Kali Country! Kali is a West Coast girl but is all
country. She was born in Amarillo, Texas into a family full of
farmers, but grew up in a small town called Trading Post in
Kansas.
She recently found out some interesting news about her
heritage. “I went down to join the Williamson County DAR

of Davy Crockett, and so is Loretta Lynn/Crystal Gayle, looks
like we might be related..DISTANT COUSINS? I think the
reaL SECRET OF MUSIC ROW, IS THAT WE ARE ALL
RELATED, LIKE THE
HATFIELDS AND MCCOYS, FAMILY FEUD.”
“This has not always been easy,” said Nolen. “My success has
taken years and now I’m just enjoying every single second
that I can.”
Currently working and performing with The Original Funk
Brothers in LA, Nolen has had the opportunity to stand next
to Bill Withers and Cheryl Lynn from the original Supremes
while presenting a STAR on the Hollywood Walk of
Fame to mutual friend, Ray Parker Jr. “I was completely honored to be at this Red Carpet Event,”
said Nolen. “It is not just an honor to meet the
famous music legends, but its humbling to
work with them and call them a friend.”
Nolen has become a huge inspiration to others just by being herself. She works daily
in making improvements in her career and
that is exactly why she is where she is today. “Many times, I’ve wanted to just
give up,” she explains. “I have been
told many negative things about my
career but I just keep going.” Nolen demonstrates a well-rounded
character with a touch of spunk
and jazz. Her voice will make
you wrap your hands around your
steering wheel and enjoy the ride.
Kali is currently residing in Los
Angeles and considers Hollywood
home. She has two children; Sheridan, 16 and Halle Samantha 15.
When not working in film, music or
modeling Nolen likes to travel and
spend time with her girls. “They are
both driving this year,” she said.
“Better stay off the road!”
For inspiration, Nolen travels to Puerto Rico, which she calls
her second home. She explains how beautiful the surroundings are and she claims to embrace every moment when she is
there. “From swimming in the waterfalls of the rainforest to
watching the most beautiful sunsets on the cliffs at Isabella,
it has become a tool in my music and art,” she explains. She
began painting after her first trip to Puerto Rico and it helps
offset her mind from her daily duties in the industry.
In the entertainment business, there are many things that are
required of an artist besides just performing. From wearing
the most updated fashion attire, making sure shoes and jewelry match, selecting the best merchandise, writing the perfect
song, memorizing lines from scripts, keeping up with social
media and technology, maintaining the latest hair and make up
trends and rehearsing- the artists who don’t have an army doing things for them, can get overwhelmed and burnt out quickly. Nolen uses her painting to escape from all the industry requirements. “I never really stop working, but I love to take a
couple hours and just put my mind on something else besides
what the industry needs,” said Nolen. “Through a paint brush,
I can still create pretty things without taking a photo, speaking
or having anyone judge me.”
Nolen has appeared in several films, photo shoots and recordings with major artists and industry professionals.
She recently starred as a guest from an episode on
The Doctors and an upcoming episode on The Beverly Hills Pawn, The Dina Collection with Yossi
Dina. On the show, Nolen performs an original
song, in a Manuel gold-jeweled jacket, after purchasing one of Elvis’ guitars.
Determined to succeed, Nolen lives by the
good ole’ saying, “that if it ain’t broke don’t fix
it,” but goes on to elaborate that if something
isn’t working – to change it. “If you continue
to do the same things and have nothing but
negative results, then you must not be
doing something right,” she said.
“If you mess up, it’s okay –

Growing Up Kilgore
Went into Tootsies Orchid Lounge the
other night and we sat at a table and I
looked up and to my surprise there was
a picture of my father, “Merle Kilgore.”
On stage was old pal from way back,
Archie Van who played in Hank’s Jr’s
Band back in the early 80’s, It was good
to see Archie was still out there pickin’.
I’d like to share this “Tootsie Story”
with you so that you may know the truth
about one of Country Music’s Greatest
hit songs of all time.
I was at Don Howser’s Funeral (MC for
the Porter Wagoner Show) and my long
time friend Charlie Dick - who was married to Patsy Cline - asked me to come
out to his car with him and Johnny Kay
to listen to a new female singer that he
had a recording of on tape.
After the song, I said to Charlie, “I have
heard so many stories about how Patsy
came to record “Crazy” I wish that you
would tell me the real story so I will
know the truth coming from the one person in Music City I can trust.”
Charlie said, “Ok this is what happen,
I was sitting in Tootsies Bar ( imagine
that) and I heard a song playing on the
jukebox. I said to Tootsie, ‘Who is that
singing that song?’”
Tootsie said, “It’s that fellow sitting at
the end of the Bar, Hugh Nelson”.
Back in the day before Cassettes or
CD’s, Tootsie would let anyone put their
45 record on her Jukebox because she
knew that they would play their songs to
showcase their talent or pitch a song to
someone, plus the Jukebox was always
making money.
So Charlie said to Hugh, “I like that song
did you write it?” He told Hugh that he
was Patsy Cline’s husband and he took
a copy of the record home with him and
played it for Patsy.
Once home Charlie said to Patsy, “I
wonder what the B side of this 45 is,
“Crazy” that a funny name for a song.”
NashvilleMusicGuide.com24
When they heard it they both loved it.
Patsy was recording an album at Bradley’s Barn the next day and Charlie kept
Patsy up all night learning the so that she
could record it.
Charlie said to me, pausing briefly from
the story to say, “Well by now most
should know, that William Hugh Nelson, is best known to the world as Willie
Nelson.”
Charlie then told me that he went back
to Tootsies looking for Willie to tell him
that Pasty had recorded “Crazy”. When
he found Willie and told him Patsy cut
“Crazy”, he freaked out, Willie just
couldn’t believe that one of the biggest
Country Music Stars had recorded his
song the first day he was in Nashville.
Charlie also told me that he took Willie to their house and told Willie,”Patsy
wants to meet you” When they turned
into the driveway, Charlie said, “Come
on in.”
Willie just froze, he couldn’t move. He
told Charlie, “I can’t come into Patsy
Cline’s
house,
she’s too big of a
Star!”
try Music songs still to this day. Willie, Charlie and Patsy became dear
friends for life. My father and Willie
Nelson were also very close friends.
When Dad passed away in February
2005, that next morning Willie called
me at 6:30 AM from his home in Hawaii to tell me how sorry he was to lose
such a dear friend and that I was lucky to
have had Merle for a father.
In the words of Paul Harvey, “And now
you know the rest of the story.”

into the house.
A minute later

tour. This year was the first time they were able to bring
the Heavy and Light campaign outside of Florida, inviting
music lovers all across America to an evening of songs,
conversation and hope.
Just a few hours before showtime at the Cannery Ballroom downtown Nashville, I got the chance to talk to the
music and events coordinator of TWLOHA, Jason, about
this amazing tour, and what makes it such an uplifting experience.
Non-profit organization To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) will be present at Bonnaroo 2014 from June 12 June 15 at Great Stage Park in Manchester, TN. TWLOHA
will have a tent for the full festival, and staffers will be on
site to speak with people and answer any questions they
may have. For more information, please visit: www.twloha.com/events
Nashville Music Guide had a chance to catch up with some
of the TWLOHA crew awhie back and thought this woud
be a great time to resurface since they wil have a presence
at Bonnaroo this summer. If you have never heard of this
Organization here is your chance.Sydney Robinson did a
great job on this interview!
To Write Love On Her Arms is a nonprofit organization
that has helped people all over the world with depression,
self injury, thoughts of suicide and addiction. The mission
began in 2006 and has since reached out to thousands.
I first heard about the organization when I was in middle
school and have not stopped hearing about it’s incredible
journey since. I think it has reached my generation the
most because of the cool and unique ways they get their
message out there. They have thrived by helping people
in non-traditional forms like hosting music festivals, traveling to schools and universities, and using their social
media sites in full force. It is not a charity that just sends
people to rehab and counseling, it is a movement that promotes hope by connecting people to different forms of
treatment and help.
The TWLOHA’s facebook page posted this quote by
J.K Rowling a few days before their show in Nashville,
“We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters
is the part we choose to act on.” This quote very much

Jason: “We introduced [the fears verses dreams campaign]
2 years ago on Warped Tour. We wanted to engage people
and activate people and challenge people with the question, “What is your biggest fear and greatest dream?” We
try to post them on our web page and that forms a sense
of community, we realize that people have a lot of similar
fears and dreams and there is a sense of community and
strength in that. It is O.K to be afraid, there are people that
struggle in the same way, you are not alone. It ties into the
theme of people encouraging each other to seek help and
it opens up the doors for those conversations.
NMG: “What was the overall mission behind Fears Vs.
Dreams?”
Jason: “The whole idea of this campaign was really to
start a conversation that needs to happen. It is so powerful
to see the amount of people that have tweeted in their own
photos and tonight we will have a photographer specifically for this. We try to post them all on our site.”
NMG: “The name of this tour is Heavy and Light, what

Jason: “Because this isn’t a benefit show, our goal isn’t
to raise a million dollars, it is to reach people where they
are, and to speak to them and to start a conversation. The
whole idea behind Heavy and Light is that a lot of the topics we talk about can be really heavy; depression, self injury, addiction and suicide, they are not topics you would
bring up at dinner. The evening surrounds those issues but
also the idea that there is hope and these artists talk about

someone who is struggling and the help, and so getting to

Kadie Lynn, Ten-Year-Old Takes Music Serious
Kadie Lynn began playing guitar two years ago with
the help of her instructor and the front man of Whiskey
Prophets, Brad Roberson. She is currently working on
her first album with all original music.
Kadie Lynn is serious about her music. “It’s not a joke,”
she said. She practices and writes everyday. Her parents
are loving and supportive but they literally have to pry
her guitar from her just to get her to eat sometimes. “I
am her number one fan and I want the absolute best
for my daughter,” said Deborah. “But, I’m her mother
first!”
“Everything is happening so fast,” said Kadie Lynn. “I
just love making people smile!”

Having just 2000 likes on her fan page to achieving
16,000 in one year, Kadie Lynn, 10, of Kemp, Texas is
on the road to stardom.
With the inspiration and help from her parents, Darrell
and Deborah Roberson, Kadie Lynn has sung many
places in Texas. From every Opry and Music Hall, The
House of Blues, fairs, festivals, charity events, and
competitions, she performs almost every weekend.
Kadie Lynn has opened for Derek Sholl, Kevin Fowler
and Vanilla Ice at the Gun Barrel City July Fest 2013
and has been invited back to open for The Casey

Yonder
Mountain
String Band
to Play
Bonnaroo
Bluegrass is a music steeped in tradition, but
over the past decade and a half -- much of it
spent on the road -- Yonder Mountain String
Band has spearheaded a renegade movement
to rewrite the definition of the genre. Alongside
other neo-bluegrass friends such as Leftover
Salmon, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, The Travelin’
McCourys, and Railroad Earth, YMSB has thoroughly revitalized and contemporized bluegrass and introduced it
to many thousands of new fans. Rolling Stone said that YMSB “liberates bluegrass’ hot-shit riffing and blue-sky
harmonies from its hidebound formalism,” while Paste Magazine wrote, “The Yonder Mountain boys have found a
formula that works: take rootsy bluegrass influences, add in some rock ‘n’ roll, and seek out an adventurous audience.”
Touring is in this band’s DNA, and YMSB has evolved into something of a phenomenon on the concert and festival
circuit -- they are, in fact, one of the top touring bluegrass bands in the country today. Yonder Mountain has sold out
Colorado’s famed Red Rocks several times, and played sold-out shows with ex-Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh at
his Terrapin Crossroads in August 2012. They also host three singular music festivals every year -- Northwest String
Summit (now in its 13th year and hosted by YMSB every year), Harvest Music Festival (where they will host for the
fifth time in October 2014), and Strings & Sol (YMSB appears for the third year in a row in December 2014) -- and
have consecutively sold out runs of shows at Telluride Bluegrass Festival year after year. In all, Yonder Mountain
logs over 100 live dates per year.
Yonder has always played music by its own design. Bending bluegrass, rock and countless other influences, they’ve
come to pioneer a sound that they alone could only champion. With a traditional lineup of instruments, they may
appear to be a traditional bluegrass band at first glance but they’ve taken the customary old-timey instrumentation
to new heights, transcending any single genre. Yonder has become a regular performer at major music festivals like

73rd Annual Iroquois Steeplechase
The 73rd annual Iroquois Steeplechase took place this past Saturday, May 10 at Percy Warner Park in Nashville,
Tenn. An annual welcome to spring for many, the bright and sunny temperatures set the tone for a pleasant day of
festivities which included shopping, a kid’s zone, tailgating, and of course, several horse races.
Attendees entered the grounds during the early morning hours and this year the event had a few new additions
including Tents in the Turn and Skybox Suites.
Connecting the dots between the race and philanthropy, Steeplechase extends its cause to Monroe Carrell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, the beneficiary of the event.
With seven races throughout the day, the winners for the final race of the day are as follows:
1st Place
DIVINE FORTUNE, Owned by William L. Pape & Jonathan Sheppard, Trained by Jonathan Sheppard, and Ridden by Willie McCarthy for a Purse of $90,000.
2nd Place
GUSTAVIAN, Owned by Magalen O. Bryant, Trained by Leslie Young, and Ridden by Paddy Young for a Purse
of $27,000.

Making a Name in Traditional Country Music Across Texas
Amanda Pruitt
Amanda Pruitt is the
most determined musical
creature you will ever have
the pleasure of meeting.
Amanda has a textured voice
that one would not believe;
to a huge heart that you will
grab hold of for life. She
joins forces with an amazing
5-piece band, Rugged Heart,
and they have been bringing
audiences together across
Texas for the past four years.
They are seasoned musicians
who love music and like to
have fun while sticking to
their traditional country and
classic sounds.
Amanda proves that
faith, hope and determination are imperative when it comes
to the entertainment industry. Singing on stage since she was
four-years-old, she has a voice of an angel and is inspired by
artists Janice Joplin, Melissa Etheridge, Martina McBride;
Patsy Cline; Tammy Wynnett; Miranda Lambert and Carrie
Underwood. Many of her fans say that her voice is a twist
of old traditional country and a new country that can not be
impersonated.
As a child Amanda did not have much support from
her family in the music business. The trials of getting the
proper exposure, financial backings and a shoulder to lean on,
were never there. “Singing will get you no where, it is not
a job and you have to know someone to make it, - are the
words that were pounded in my head at a young age,” she
said. Amanda did not let the negative comments get to her.
She eventually was old enough to join her school choir and
learned the basic fundamentals of the voice.
From the age of twelve to present, Amanda has sang
the National Anthem at baseball, football and basketball
games, fishing tournaments, award ceremonies, rodeos,
church events and banquets. Her most recent National Anthem
exposure was at the Texas Lone Star Park horse races in 2013
and she received third place out of 200 contestants for the
Texas Motor Speedway competition.
In the past four years, Amanda has worked harder than
ever in pursuing her dreams
in the music industry. With
the help and support of many
sponsors, she has traveled to
Nashville, TN to attend singer
/ song writer festivals, she has
worked with several amazing
musicians, song writers,
producers and engineers, she
writes new songs weekly, and
she was recently accepted and
graduated into Actors, Models
and Talent for Christ (AMTC)
of Dallas, TX.
Amanda
was
signed to Tate Music Group
Publishing in 2012 and she
released her third country
album Something Will Give in
February 2013. The new album has represented who Amanda
really is and several of the songs have hit international radio
charts just over the past year. Amanda will be releasing her
fourth album in 2015 with all original music and inspirations
from her deck of cards that has recently been dealt. “The past
year has been a struggle to just get up in mornings due to
tragic family events, but my music is keeping me focused and
helps me get through the pain,” she said.
With her husband and children being her inspiration
and her #1 FRANS as she likes to call them, Amanda lives
her life as a humble and brave person. When first seeing her,
you may notice her bright blue eyes or her long strawberryblonde hair, but when you speak to her you will begin to
understand her passion for Christ, family and music. Not only
does she strive to be an honorable wife and loving mother, she
maintains the strength in her music that she believes without
Christ would never be possible.
“If God’s will is for me to sing on the Grand Ole
Opry stage, sell a million albums or just sing at local fairs and
festivals- I’m okay with that,” said Amanda. “I’d love to be at
the top of the charts and open for Miranda Lambert but all I
can do is work as hard as I can and pray that I’m in the right
place at the right time-I love music and it’s my escape from
this crazy world we live in.”

BONNAROO WORKS FUND (BWF) DOUBLES GRANT RECIPIENTS IN 2014
&THE AVETT BROTHERS SIGN ON AS BWF AMBASSADORS
Bonnaroo Works Fund (BWF) has
named nearly 40 nonprofit organizations as 2014 recipients, doubling the
number of grantees from last year. The
Bonnaroo Works Fund is the charitable
arm of the world-renowned Bonnaroo
Music & Arts Festival and supports
national and regional organizations
that advance the arts, education and the
environment; with a focus on local reinvestment.
Some of this year’s notable grant recipients include: Coffee County Schools Libraries, Coffee County
Soil Conservation, Music Makes Us, Notes For Notes, Tennessee Clean Water Network and VH1-Save The Music (complete
list below).
“The Bonnaroo Work Fund will help Music Makes Us advance
our vision of providing quality music education to all students
K-12 in Metro Nashville Public Schools,” said Laurie T. Schell,
director, Music Makes Us.
Program administrators also announced that The Avett Brothers
have signed on as 2014 Bonnaroo Works Fund Ambassadors and
will help raise awareness of the Fund’s purpose and impact.
“This year marks the beginning of many new initiatives for the
Bonnaroo Works Fund,” said BWF Director Nina Miller. “Bonnaroo’s founders have always been committed to the BWF as the
Festival’s philanthropic centerpiece, and to have the added support
of such an amazing headlining band as The Avett Brothers will
help continue to raise our profile in the music and philanthropic
communities.” Upon accepting, Scott & Seth Avett said “We’re
glad to represent the Bonnaroo Works Fund – it does an amazing
amount of good work and measurably moves the needle for causes
we all care about.”
One of the very visible ways the Avetts are showing their support
is by having their iconic song, I and Love and You, turned into a
Soundwaves poster with proceeds from poster sales directly benefiting the Bonnaroo Works Fund. The Soundwaves process creates
an visual piece of art by capturing the sonic heartbeat of the song.
The value of the BWF stretches far and wide, and festival attendees flying into Nashville will be among the first to experience it
firsthand. Bonnaroo and the BWF partnered with the Arts at the
Airport program to sponsor a contest this spring, and the proposals of four artists, Carla Ciuffo, AK Llamas, Duncan McDaniel
and Peat Wollaeger, were selected for inclusion. Their Bonnaroothemed sculptures/installations were recently installed in two
skylights on Concourse A, B and C and will be on display until
January 26, 2015.
Festival goers will also see the power of the fund throughout
the festival grounds. The Wall, a new structure near the Sonic
Stage, will recognize donors to the Fund and celebrate all the
good the Bonnaroo Works Fund and supporters have accomplished together. Festival goers will have the opportunity to

watch as their names are added to The
Wall when they make a donation to the
Bonnaroo Works Fund, 100 percent of
which will directly support BWF programs and grant recipients.
In addition, patrons can bid on signed
guitars, posters and other memorabilia and pick up an “I ♥ the Bonnaroo Works Fund” button and bumper
sticker at the Silent Auction tent in
Centeroo, spotlighting their support
and furthering the Fund’s mission.
“It is part of the Bonnaroo mission to support the community and
create opportunities that nurture the spirit of philanthropy in others,” said Miller. “The success of the fund speaks to the real, tangible Bonnaroo community.”

The Oak Ridge Boys Celebrate 41 Years
time I sang with The Oak Ridge Boys, says lead singer
Duane Allen. ―This is the only job I’ve ever wanted to
have.”
“Like everyone else in the group,”‖ adds bass singer
extraordinaire, Richard Sterban, “I was a fan of the Oaks
before I became a member. I‘m still a fan of the group
today. Being in The Oak Ridge Boys is the fulfillment of a
lifelong dream.”
The two, along with tenor Joe Bonsall and baritone William
Lee Golden, comprise one of Country’s truly legendary
acts.
Nashville Music Guide had the opportunity to sit down
with the ORB for a very special interview to discuss not
only the release of Boys Night Out. The first question on
our minds and on the masses of Oak Ridge fans was why
now and how come it took so long for us to get a live
album.
With a legacy that stretches across 6 decades, encompasses
more than 40 million albums sold, and includes numerous
iconic hit singles such as “Elvira,” “American Made,” and
“Y’all Come Back Saloon,” it’s no wonder that The Oak
Ridge Boys are a favorite of President George H.W. Bush.
2014 marks the 41st anniversary of the Oak Ridge Boys—
who better to celebrate with than the 41st President of the
United States?
The Oak Ridge Boys are not only celebrating 41 years
together, but are also preparing to release their first-ever
LIVE album. Cleopatra Records will release Boys Night
Out on April 15th, in three formats - CD, vinyl, and digital
download - finally giving ORB fans the experience of the
group’s well-polished live performance for them to enjoy
anytime, anywhere.
To be sure, Oak Ridge Boys fans have been clamoring
for a live album of hits for several years now, but as the
band explained, “For some reason or another, the time
never seemed right.” Then, in early 2013, lead vocalist and
producer Duane Allen saw the stars align as the band was
able to get its hands on some top quality remote recording
equipment, and promptly began capturing performances of
their current show dubbed “Boys Night Out.” Night after
night, The Oak Ridge Boys wowed audiences across the
nation with a set list that packed all of the group’s hit singles
and fan favorites into one magnificent celebration. Years of
preparation have made such well-loved songs as “You’re The
One,” “Thank God For Kids,” and the brilliant “Bobbie Sue”
sound even more exhilarating than when they were originally
recorded! It might not be quite the same as being there, but
it’s thrillingly close!
“When I go on stage, I get the same feeling I had the first

“We have been so busy cutting new songs, we were always
looking towards the future, which has been new material –
and we have always had a good supply of that. Nashville
is where the greatest writers in the world reside – and they
supply us with what we are looking for,” stated Duane.” We
give them the framework of what we want and out of their
magic hands they write our career for us. We have always
loved new songs and the excitement behind new material and
up until recently hadn’t taken the time to record the hits that
got us here.”
“We rented some equipment, and turned it on and left it on.
Raw and dry, with no tweaks; we left it exactly the way it’s
coming off the stage. We recorded 22 live shows with over
60 songs. Boy’s Night Out is just the first compilation that
we are putting out. We picked 14 of our favorites and ran
with it,” added Joe. “And while these are classic songs, it is a
fresh approach. It’s our band right now in a live atmosphere
playing these songs that we do now in 2014. It is a new way
to listen to these songs, even for us to it’s a new sound.”
The energy and stage presence behind The Oak Ridge Boys
is beyond powerful and hearing them in this full circle
album of great hits. If you have yet to hear this album, we
encourage you to go and check it out now.

Story by Amanda Andrews
Bruce in the Morning Radio Spotlight
By Phil Sweetland
Veteran country DJ Bruce In The Morning of KKJQ in
Garden City, KS, is used to having stars such as Kellie
Pickler and Kristen Cavallari call into his radio program,
but one of his favorite all-time performers is the traditional
country singer and songwriter Big Joe Matthews.
In a telephone conversation in early May, Bruce said that
when he is in a club to host or see an artist, “I don’t watch
the band, I just watch the crowd. That’s what I do, it’s more
about them then anything else.
“At Big Joe’s show,” the radio veteran continued, “people
were havin’ a party. Joe plays more of a classic country set
than a lot of artists, and when he plays he throws a party.”
Big Joe’s a blue-collar guy who grew up and still works
days in the oilfields of his native Sooner State of Oklahoma.
Nights and weekends, he and his fine band are constantly
playing shows all over Oklahoma and neighboring states
such as Kansas and Missouri.
He’s done shows in major markets such as Oklahoma City
as well as dozens of honky-tonks in smaller towns such as
Roughnecks Saloon in Kingfisher, OK, sharing his own
personal vision of country music that is much more Haggard
and Jones than Taylor Swift and Rascal Flatts.
A huge part of country radio’s audience prefers the more
traditional songs and stylings that Big Joe loves best as well.
Even his powerhouse originals, such as “Redneck Diva,”
“No Fun Haters,” and “Welcome To The Oil Patch,” are
done in a traditional style but with contemporary flavoring.
Like Hank Jr. and Charlie Daniels, Big Joe is a larger-thanlife personality who is a born showman. As he describes
it, he studied at “Honky Tonk U.” Big Joe interacts with
fans, country radio, and listeners with a smile and honesty
that many Music Row superstars would be wise to use as a
pattern.
Fans know they’re seeing and hearing both a friend and one
of their own when Big Joe takes the stage, and that’s when
the party is just gettin’ started.
It didn’t take long for Joe and Bruce in the Morning to
become good buds.
“We kind of hit it off,” Bruce tells us. “Joe’s a lot of fun.”
So is country radio, especially the kind of listener-friendly
programming that Bruce in the Morning has given listeners
both at KKJQ in Kansas and for more than six years before
that at KXKX in Sedalia, MO.
He’s worked in a variety of radio formats since 1994.
Like much of country radio, one of Bruce in the Morning’s
passions is the annual support and 2-day fundraisers his
stations do to raise money for the St. Jude Children’s
Research Hospital in Memphis.
Since beginning their partnership with St. Jude in 1989
with the guidance of Randy Owen of country supergroup
Alabama, country radio has raised a whopping $316 Million
for St. Jude, a figure that is constantly increasing.
“I’m in Memphis for the weekend,” Bruce in the Morning
tells us as we begin to talk about Big Joe Matthews. “I’ve
been there several times for St. Jude’s. We’ve done St. Jude
radiothons eight times at some point at the various stations
I’ve worked at.”
Bruce explains how Randy Owen and Danny Thomas, the
late TV star who founded St. Jude, ran into one another once
and got the concept of a hospital partnership with country
radio going.
At the Country Radio Seminar in Nashville a few months
ago, the 25th Anniversary of that amazing relationship was
celebrated.
“Country radio embraces it and runs with it,” Bruce says.
“It’s two days per station once a year. We become partners
in hope.”
That same kind of country loyalty and compassion are
hallmarks of Joe and his lovely bride Alisha Matthews. Joe
has also had a lifelong passion for country music, country
fans, honky tonks, and country radio.
Those are just a few of the countless things Big Joe and
Bruce in the Morning have in common.

BONNAROO IN THE EYE OF A FAN
When, the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival announced their lineup for this year’s
festival, set to occur from June 13 to June 16. “Weird Al” Yankovic announced the
lineup during a live online stream dubbed the “Bonnaroo Lineup Announcement
Megathon” or “BLAM” for short.
I attended the music festival for the first time last year. Not only was this my first
time at Bonnaroo, but it was also my first music festival experience ever. It was a
phenomenal event to be my first music festival and an event that I highly recommend
everyone experience at least once in his or her life.
The best way I can describe the event is a mixture of Woodstock and the Quidditch
World Cup. There were a lot of hippies walking around and lots of psychedelics to
be had (no worries, I abstained). Everyone was there to enjoy the music, to forget
life’s troubles and to just “chill out” for four days in the Tennessee wilderness.
The event was also part Quidditch World Cup. Just as Harry and the gang camped
outside of the Quidditch stadium in Book 4 of the series, and entered the stadium for
the main event, so too do Bonnaroovians (an affectionate name for Bonnaroo goers).
For the four days, Bonnaroovians camp outside the Centeroo, the epicenter of the
entire event where all the musical performances are held. And like the Quidditch
World Cup, Bonnaroovians enter Centeroo only for the main events and return to
their campgrounds for lodging.
As I let the lineup announcement process in my brain, I soon started exploding with
excitement at the thought that yes, I am returning to Bonnaroo this year and yes, the
lineup is fantastic. I was very happy to see Mumford & Sons headlining the festival,
but admittedly, I was disappointed to see that Beyoncé (yes, Queen Bey) was not a
headliner. I thought for sure she would be a lock.
As far as other acts go, I was pleased to see that The Lumineers, Passion Pit, Of
Monsters and Men, Beach House and Edward Sharpe were all playing. I have never
given A$AP Rocky a proper listening to, so I hope that this festival allows me to give
him the time people tell me he deserves. Other musical performers I thought might
be included in the lineup this year were Ellie Goulding, Lana Del Rey and The Killers. Alas, these bands did not get the invite.
The best part of any music festival is the chance to discover new bands you may
have never heard before. There are always those bands that are buried at the end of
the lineup list, but if you make effort to go to their shows, you may just find a new
favorite. This happened to me last year with Laura Marling. The English folk musician was listed towards the bottom, but after going to her show, I fell in love with
her music and still listen to her a year later. I’m looking to see if the same occurs for
bands like Sea Wolf, Jeff the Brotherhood and Father John Misty.
There are two specific musical moments I am looking forward to the most. I may
very well burst out into tears during Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s performance
of “Same Love” and will put all of my energy into dancing like I’ve never danced
before during R. Kelly’s “Ignition (Remix).” If I had to live the four days and only
saw these two experiences, I would still consider the festival a success.
Perhaps the best part of all of this is that there are still more bands to be announced.
I cannot wait to see what else Bonnaroo 2013 has in store.

Nashville heavy weights are talking about Lily

New Tony Stampley Album Has Traditional Country
Fans and Songwriters Excited
By Phil Sweetland
One of the pleasant
surprises at the Key West
Songwriters
Festival
in early May was Tony
Stampley.
Though he wasn’t on the
official program at the
prestigious event, which
this year included dozens
of top country songwriters
such as Sara Evans, Kacey
Musgraves, Al Anderson,
and Gary Chapman,
Stampley created some of
the biggest buzz there.
“I had people following
me around Key West,”
Stampley said in a
telephone conversation the
following week. “Songs
from my new album are being played on iHeartRadio
stations in the US and in Europe. They’re playing me on
SiriusXM Outlaw Channel 60, WSM-AM and HANKFM stations.”
Tony, who’s had more than a dozen songs recorded
by Hank Williams Jr., including “American Offline,”
released his solo “When I Get On A Roll” album of 10
songs a couple months back.
Unlike the pop-flavored or even hip-hop styled offerings
of many current country radio stars, most of Stampley’s
songs on the set are done in a traditional country style,
which is literally music to the ears of countless country
fans.
Recent singles from the record including “Home Wasn’t
Built In A Day” and “It Ain’t All Good But It Ain’t Half
Bad,” both classic Tony titles and hooky, radio-friendly
songs, have done very well on secondary radio charts
such as New Music Weekly and Music Row.
“Oh yeah, it’s definitely exciting to get the recognition,”
says Tony, the son of Joe Stampley of Moe & Joe fame.
“After my DreamWorks album, I had several opportunities
to put things out but it didn’t work out right. The label
would close or whatever. I came very close a few times.
NashvilleMusicGuide.com46
I finally just decided,
`let’s put the album out
independently.’ ”
With several producers
including Joe Stampley,
working on the new
album, the finished
product
includes
traditional
country,
Gospel flavorings, R&B
and soul stylings, a fine
cover of songwriter
Larry Weiss’s huge
Glen Campbell hit
“Rhinestone Cowboy,”
and all kinds of
Stampley
magic
writing,
performing,
and charisma.
Joe’s “Just Good Ol’
Boys,” a novelty song
which was a duet with
Moe Bandy, was a No. 1 country single for the duo in
1979.
“Folks still love country music. They just don’t hear
it very much,” Tony says. “When I played songs like
`Home Wasn’t Built In A Day’ down in Key West, the
crowd went crazy. People kept telling me, `man, I love
that.’ These were songs talking about the hard times in
life. When you’re growing up it’s tough, and then when
you get older the economy gets bad. ”
That kind of honesty and storytelling, combined with his
massive guitar and vocal skills, have given Tony Stampley
a long-overdue bunch of recognition and admiration.
One fan was so excited about the album and the chance to
meet Tony that he drove all the way down from Michigan
to Key West. That’s a distance of more than 1,500 miles.
Stampley was further rewarded when a SiriusXM
programmer told him, “you sing so good, and most
songwriters that write as good as you can’t do that.”
So in the summer of 2014, some 43 years after his father
Joe Stampley charted the first of his 62 Billboard country
singles, Tony is truly following in his Daddy’s footsteps.
For lovers of great country music, that’s one of the most
encouraging stories of the summer.
When creator and founder of MyStargo - a new navigational app
that brings visitors to everything local - was asked why he created
it, Scott Hugger told NMG that he simply knew there was huge
demand for it.
“It is amazing how many times I have been asked, ‘Where do you
go in Nashville?’ and while I get asked this a ton, just imagine the
number of times servers and bartenders in hear this,” stated Scott
“Can you imagine trying to explain the directions too?”
MyStargo does it all of this and then some. All that the servers
and bartenders have to do now is say ‘download MyStargo’ and
it will take you on an adventure in this town that you’ll never
forget.
“I look at [MyStargo] as a way to show tourists from all over
the world just how great Nashville and the surrounding cities
are,” said Scott. “MyStargo was made “hands on” with years
of experience along with State public records and facts. I have
personally visited every single place on MyStargo. I have taken
the picture at each and triple checked the coordinates to ensure it
was 100% right.”
MyStargo was made with the thought, that when I get to a strange
city that I have never been to before or maybe I have visited many
times over, I want to know what to do - besides the main attraction
that I came for. People coming to Nashville or going on vacation
anywhere generally have a plan in mind before they leave their
home. MyStargo just adds to their plan in a major way. Mystargo
has places listed that most probably wouldn’t even know they
could get the chance to see or experience. It takes the questions of
‘Is it too far away?’, ‘Is it hard to find?’ or ‘Is it worth the drive?’
and answers them. It takes all the doubts of why you might not
go to visit somewhere and makes it available at your fingertips.
From MyStargo the user can find out all sorts of things about
the town they are visiting, for example: celebrities homes, where
the Opry stars like to hang out, where legends like Johnny Cash,
Minnie Pearl and George Jones are laid to rest, plantation tours
that were built during the Civil War, presidential homes, water
parks, popular restaurants where the stars can be found sharing
a meal with the locals, record labels, and studios where your
favorite artist has recorded. The list goes on and there are about
300 unique places to visit in Nashville.
“One unique place is Loretta Lynn’s Ranch- which is in one of
Nashville’s surrounding cities. You can spend an entire day at her
house and if you weren’t ready to go they even have cabins for
overnight,” explained Scott. “There is also Chattanooga – which
has the mountains, Ruby Falls, the Aquarium and on your way
you can even hop off at Manchester and visit their local WalMart which is consumed by Bonnaroo goers every June too – the
stories they could tell you. And yes, I even added stores like WalMart, because let’s face it, how would the rest of the world know
the names of our grocery stores.”
Besides the local delis, MyStargo also has information on golf
courses, churches, and numerous other amenities you may need
when travelling.
“I think the highest appeal to it is the ability to have a local in
your pocket without having to go at someone else’s pace or pay
exuberant fees for tours that only last a few hours and contain you
to a bus with what is usually a bunch of strangers,” said Scott.
“No high priced tourist fees. Just pick your place, tap the link
and go. Heck, the app will even watch the traffic for you as you
drive.”
MyStargo was founded by Scott, but it took a team that included
a private investor, professional app builders, not to mention a
slew of support and key players to make it possible.
“I have a team of professional app builders out of Michigan who
have made this app everything and more,” explained Scott. “Sam
Carey and Nathan Thorpe are two brilliant minds that are one of
a kind and artists in their own right. Their attention to detail has
made MyStargo what it is today.”
MyStargo also has backing when it comes to artists and
establishments locally and internationally to keep the movement
going. Some key players in the MyStargo movement are Lea
Sweet, Sabastian Roberts, The Skahls, Isaac Mathews, Brit
Stokes, Brinn Black, Kevin McCreery, #1 Songwriter /voice
coach Judy Rodman with LeAnn Rimes #1 song “One Way
Ticket”, Amazing Clubs like Nashville’s #1 Honkytonk The
Stage on Broadway, The Music City Bar and Grill by the Grand
Ole Opry House “So many people have supported me on this project; so far no one
has said no to being involved, including Randy Mathews of this
paper The Music Guide Magazine has been extremely generous
of his time and support! I cannot thank them all enough,” said
Scott.
MyStargo even gives you access to the ins-and-outs of A and
NewYork. They are the same concept as MyStargo Nashville
except like in LA they even teach you how to see a television
show live or even get the chance to be on one. It provides the user
with what to do and how to do it.
Some future locations to look for in 2015 include: New York (it’s
about 75% done now but there is still more to be done added
Scott), Miami, London, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Minneapolis
and Dallas. Story by Amanda Andrews

Producer’s Spotlight: The Legend Continues from Ron
Haffkine’s Work with Dr. Hook to Newcomers Tawny River
Despite contracting polio at
age 12 and being completely
paralyzed for 2 yrs, part of
God’s plan, among other
things, for Ron Haffkine to
become a “Historic Figure”
in ROCK N’ ROLL history
started to take shape, in the
early 70’s.
At 21, Ron was a selfprofessed
“average”
musician, but his love for
music drew him to Grenwich
Village, in his home town of
New York, where he wound up becoming buddies
with famed songwriter Shel Silverstein, who was 28
at the time and had already penned numerous hits.
Ron had formed and was managing a band called
The Gurus at the time and he wanted them to record.
So he walked into Regent Sound and explained to a
not yet famous engineer named Bill Szymczyk, who
later produced The Eagles, that he wanted to make
a record, but knew nothing about the process and
Bill said he’d like to help. During the sessions, Ron
would tell Bill: “I’d like to hear this or I’d like to
hear that, or…there’s not enough of this or there’s
too much of that” and Ron produced his first project.
When finished, Ron played it for his buddy Shel and
he was so impressed that he told Ron about a couple
of films that he was writing the music for and he
needed someone on the inside to produce the music
for both films and protect his creative interests. The
two films were “Who is Harry Kellerman”, which
initially wasn’t a hit, but later become a cult film,
in which Dustin Hoffman, who had already done The
Graduate, Midnight Cowboy and Little Big Man,
played a songwriter and “Ned Kelly” starring Mick
Jagger. The soundtrack of the 1970 film features
Silverstein songs performed by Waylon Jennings,
and Kris Kristofferson.
Although he was broke at the time, Ron recognized
the opportunity and took “the gig” for free. One scene
in the Hoffman film required a band on stage, but
Ron didn’t like the band, so he recommended a band
NashvilleMusicGuide.com48
called DR. Hook, that he’d heard in a bar called The
Sands, in Union City, New Jersey, where they were
playing for $ 40 bucks a week. But the producers,
Shel and Dustin all said “No”. Un-relentless, Ron
said he would pay for a showcase on the condition
that they all attend. They all attended and they all
agreed to use Dr. Hook in the film. Ron was astute
enough to know that he had to get a record deal for
the band before the movie came out, so he called and
got in to see Clive Davis at CBS, on the clout of
Hoffman’s name. Once in, Ron tried to talk Clive into
letting Dr. Hook do a live showcase in his office but
Clive wasn’t interested, so Ron bluffed Davis into
believing that Ahmet Ertegun, President of Atlantic
Records, would. Clive agreed… So Haffkine, in
preparation for the meeting told the drummer to turn
over Clive’s wastepaper basket and use it as a drum.
He told the keyboard player to jump up on Clive’s
desk and kick off whatever is in the way and he
told Ray to never sing anymore than 2 ft away from
Clive’s face. To get the guys up for the task, he had
them drink “half a bottle of booze” before they went
in. Clive was immediately knocked out and called
his business affairs guy Elliot Goldman, (who later
became president of RCA) and told him to take Ron
into his office and “don’t come out until they were
signed.
From hanging out with Shel Silverstein, Ron had
learned the difference between good songs and great
songs and was also quickly becoming Dr. Hook’s #1
A&R man, as well as their producer and manager.
Later, after Sylvia’s Mother Ron locked horns again
with Clive Davis for 3 months over Silverstein’s Cover
of the Rolling Stonebecause of the lyrics “We take
all kinds of pills to get all kinds of thrills” and “I
got a freaky old lady named Cocaine Katy”. Ron
said: “If you put out another Sylvia’s Mother…Dr.
Hook is done! Clive finally exhausted, went back and
told the label to release it. Ron, against all opinions,
now interjects on the record all the fun talking “Hey
Ray…etc” and now Clive wanted drums on it but Ron
said: “Don’t **** with it…it’s perfect just the way it
is”. Cover of the Rolling Stone was not their biggest
hit, but it turned out to be the most significant song
of Dr. Hook’s career.
Ron recalled: “I went up to see, Jann Wenner, one of
the founders of Rolling Stone Magazine, I walked in
and said; “You guys are a bunch of piss-ants”. Jann
said “WHAT?” Ron said: “I’ve just given you guys
the best commercial for that rag you’ll ever get” and
the rest became music history. They sent Cameron
Crowe who later wrote and directed “Jerry McGuire”
to do the interview, who at the time was their 16
yr. old wiz-kid reporter and in March, 1973, issue
131, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show appeared
on the cover of Rolling Stone thanks to the very
savvy Ron Haffkine. Later albums produced by Ron
featured Sharing The Night Together, When You’re
In Love With A Beautiful Woman, Sexy Eyes, Baby
Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk and their biggest hit A
Little Bit More, which Ron found at a flee market in
San Francisco for 35 cents.
To me…that was HUGE…and it still is.
- 1975 Move to Nashville
At the time, in Nashville, Kyle Lehning, now
famous for his body of work with Randy Travis was
producing Waylon Jennings and wanted to meet Ron’s
engineer, Roy Hally,. Kyle knew Shel Silverstein, so
he got Shel to introduce him to Ron, and Ron in turn
introduced Kyle to Roy. When they met, Kyle said to
Ron; “Why don’t you make a record in Nashville?”
Ron said: “I’ don’t know how to make a record with
studio musicians”. So Kyle hired the musicians and
showed Ron how sessions are done in Nashville.
Later when the band signed with Capitol, the first
single “Only 16” got some attention, but when Ron
found a little tune called “A Little Bit More” on a vinyl
record, at a flee market for 35cents in San Francisco,
things exploded for Dr. Hook. At that point the offers
started pouring in for Ron to not only run a couple of
labels but also, to produce a plethora of artists, but
he loved what he’s doing. You could always see Ron
in the wings, singing along with every song and he
didn’t want to chance ruining his relationships – with anyone, so he turned them all down.
Recently, Ron began working with a new duo, Tawny
River. He produced their first single release “Aye Aye
Mari Juana” and commented that they are next big
thing to hit the music scene.
Ron appeared on The Producer’s Chair full details
@ www.theproducerschair.com.
Ron Haffkine with Dr. Hook
Ron moved to Nashville in 1975 and at 72 yrs old still
resides here, on Old Hickory Lake in Hendersonville,
with his wife Sydney. In all, Ron produced 10 studio
albums and 2 live albums on Dr. Hook, which
garnered 10 top tens on the pop charts in the US
and 67 gold and platinum awards world wide. To
music historians, it’s no secret that at least two of
Ron’s albums are ranked and archived, with the best
music produced in the Seventies. Like the band he
discovered and put on the cover, “Legendary” record
producer, manager, A&R man Ron Haffkine is still in
a class of his own.
I remember thinking at the time; “They did it…They
got The Cover…Perfect”
