Welcome to our Holiday issue. On the inside pages you will find not only stories about
our rescues and what has been happening with the dogs in our care, you will also find items
for sale and fundraisers for individual rescues. This is, after all, the season to give to others
in the spirit of the Holidays and what better gift to give is one that gives to the dogs in need.
This time of year is one of the most advantageous for rescue as far as financial gains.
Rescues have worked long and hard to have merchandise available that shows support for
their rescue. Many of these items are practical, like shirts, jackets, leashes and collars.
Other items are just plain fun like tree ornaments, rescue pins and refrigerator magnets just
to name a few. What ever the item is it shows your support for rescue and are reasonably
priced.
Giving items to friends and family purchased from a rescue has a third advantage. Items,
especially clothing, which usually have the rescue’s logo on them keeps the rescue visible
year ‘round. Every time a friend or relative wears an item with a rescue logo on it that rescue
is visible to the general public and getting the word out about rescue is important also. A
rescue item just keeps on giving for years.
There is yet another thing you can do for rescue this time of year. Many rescues have set
up donations through department stores, grocery stores and through online shopping. All
you need do is go to your regional rescue’s website and find out who supports them with a
percentage donation of your purchases. By registering at and patronizing these retailers you
can also support rescue.
All in all the Holiday season is a win-win situation for rescue, their supporters and friends
and family. I hope you enjoy what you read and see here in this issue. Happy Holidays and

I recently had the great pleasure of watching a video about Alf a “pitbull” who was salvaged from the property of Michael Vick. Alf’s beginning in life was a sad mix of no human
companionship and no socialization. Basically, Alf was a mess, but thanks to a TTouch
trainer who helped rehabilitate him Alf is on his way to a new life as a complete dog. This is
an all too familiar story with dogs in rescue. From sad to happy is the best case scenario
for rescue dogs and the people who rescue them.
The story of Alf and rescue dogs in general is much of what this season is all about.
Sacrifice, giving and a new beginning are signified by the holidays we celebrate this time of
year. Throughout the year animal rescuers “sacrifice” their love and time to insure that the
dogs in need are able to live a normal life with their humans. The new humans in the dogs
life “give” of themselves to see that the bond they have just formed with their new family
member is as solid as the bond man has had with dogs for 13,000 years. Like the passing
of the old year, the start of the new year heralds a new beginning and so is the new beginning for the rescue dogs.
During this busy time of year it is our hope that you spend a little time reflecting on your
relationship with your own dogs and celebrate the dogs who have successfully gone
through rescue. Raise your glass in a toast to all the rescuers who have made that possible.

Assistance: Paws for Life
Northern Illinois Samoyed Assistance, Inc. partnered with Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital’s
(Barrington) breast cancer support group to conduct “Paws…For Life” dog walk and K9 Festival.
Proceeds generated by this event will benefit Advocate Good Shepherd’s breast cancer support
group and abandoned or unwanted Samoyeds.
We pounded the suburbs with advertising! We had everything from soup to
Deleware Valley Samoyed nuts for people to enjoy! We had Sammie Paws (photo above right) on board!

When all was said and done, the general consensus of the hospital staff and
NISA’s planning committee was that in
spite of the weather we had a successful event. Everyone (hospital staff, exhibitors, volunteers, and attendees) was
extremely impressed with NISA and the
event as a whole. All we needed was
sunshine to pull out a heavier participation! With such great encouraging
words we’d be foolish to decline the
opportunity and invitation to do another
dog walk next year. NISA’s ever popular and very loveable Sammie Paws
was a huge hit. Several of the rescue
groups were quick to snap photo’s of
their dogs nose-to-nose with Sammie
Paws. Talk about photo-ops!!!

Plus an idea for drawing interest!
It' not often that you'll run across a near 6 ft. Samoyed but
at the Schaumburg PetSmart anything's possible. NISA's
mascot cruised the parking lot out front to lure in the curious. Meanwhile volunteers Annette and Craig Smith, Alan
Zielinski, Joyce Gussy, Bob Lazarri, Donna Sharik and
Bob Gilles set up inside to talk Samoyed with shoppers to
raise awareness of NISA rescue needs. With the assistance of several smilin' Samoyeds eager to accept belly
rubs on all sides, who can resist?

Introducing
Samoyed Rescue of New Mexico
Samoyed Rescue of New
Mexico was started by Michelle Jakle. Located in
Santa Fe, they serve all of
New Mexico. A small rescue
program at this time, they rescue about 2 Samoyeds each
year. In addition to Michelle,
her husband, Jonathan assists. At different points they
have had other volunteers as
well.
Michelle has been involved in
rescue work for 10 ears.
NSR posed some questions that Michelle
generously answered.
Why do you believe people should support
rescue work? So much need, yet so few
resources.
How did you come into rescue work?
About 10 years ago we adopted our first
rescue, a Samoyed from Houston.
“Blanco” is now 18 years old.
Why is rescue important to you? We adore
this “love-wisdom” breed!
What is one of the most delightful, fulfilling
aspects of rescue for you? Finding a great
home for a Samoyed that seems to have
lost hope.
What is one of the hardest aspects of rescue for you? Finding foster homes. My
three Samoyeds get extremely upset when
I bring home a foster rescue Samoyed, and
this can be very stressful for my family as
well as the poor rescue Samoyed. All of
my volunteer foster homes in the past have
become burnt out and are not willing to
foster anymore.

Share a memorable story from your rescue life: There has been some confusion
with other rescue groups in New Mexico
that I am the “white dog” rescue, so I’ve
had to set some boundaries with these
groups (which resulted in some adverse
reactions) that I specifically rescue the
Samoyed breed. I would love to rescue
all breeds, but my resources are limited,
and the people who contact me want to
specifically adopt a Samoyed and not
just a white dog.
Share a humorous story from your rescue life: A few years ago we tracked
down the breeder of a rescue Samoyed
and discovered that he was related to
one of my own Samoyeds.

Didn’t we have a lovely gathering the day we had our picnic?
Yes we did, and that would be an understatement, for we
could not have had nicer weather or a nicer turn out of Michigan Samoyed Rescues and Wonderland Samoyed Safe
Havens rescued dogs and their loving families.
There cannot be a prouder moment for us than to see our
efforts rewarded by you.
We had food and fun and prizes and many pictures taken so
the memory of one of our most special days can never be
forgotten.

NorSled Rescue offers Quilt to support rescue

The 2008 NorSled Quilt is a custom-designed quilt incorporating several classic quilt-block patterns: Split Rail, Sawtooth,
Bear Claw and Maple Leaf. Each pattern has a theme. The Split Rail pattern represents the fence that no Husky will stay
behind! The Sawtooth pays tribute to the Sawtooth Pack of the Nez Perce. Bear Claw resembles the wolf claw, and the
Maple Leaf pattern provides the Northern Rockies Grey Wolves their spring and summer shade. The quilt back is a
warm and cozy fleece “Scandinavian Print” giving further support to our Northern Breed theme. The center block is
empty and is designed to have the winner’s choice of
pet picture added to that area. The winner will
probably be pulled the first day of the Iditarod in

plan offered through Humane Society University that is designed to support you in your work with volunteers. This program is free to anyone in the animal care and control field who
would like to sharpen his or her volunteer management skills
and delivers expert training and resources in volunteer management. While the content is relevant across many diverse
fields, you will find the training and resources provided to be
directly applicable to the volunteerism issues you face in the
animal care, control, and sheltering field.
Online Seminars
Everyone Ready seminars are self-paced, can be viewed at
anytime while offered, and take about 1 hour to complete. It is
easy to register and free if you work in the field of animal care
including rescue work. There are a multitude of on-line
courses to take including two introductory on-line seminars
which are always available. Everyone Ready also provides
access to a volunteer management library with articles on all
aspects of volunteer management. All of this at no cost!

Keeping Volunteers Motivated (So They Stay!)
ends January 17
Avoid the costly “revolving door” of people who lose
their initial motivation and enthusiasm and ultimately
stop volunteering. This will help you create an environment conducive to keeping volunteers motivated, committed, and onboard! Positive motivation is key to why
people volunteer in the first place and also why they
remain committed over time. While individuals are internally motivated for many different reasons, there are
definite strategies an organization can use to engage
and retain volunteers. In fact, sustaining motivation is
integrated with all other volunteer management activities, especially recruitment, work design, supervision,
mutual evaluation, training, and recognition.
Coming December 15th: Turning Single Days
of Service into Longer Volunteer Involvement
A universal trend today is that new volunteers prefer
short-term, even one-day, assignments to long-term
commitment. In the past decade, “days of service” have
proliferated so that almost every month brings a holiday
or other one-time event through which groups of volunteers want to do projects. How can an organization
function in this environment, make use of one-day activities, and encourage volunteers to extend their commitments beyond such a limited schedule?

For the 12th consecutive year
Busse Woods in Elk Grove experienced an early blast of Winter
white in September!
Once again St. Louis Samoyed Rescue
will be gift wrapping during the month of
December at several Borders and Barnes and Nobles around the area. We'll
be at the Sunset Shopping Center Borders, the Creve Coeur Borders and the
Barnes and Noble and Borders at Mid
Rivers Mall. Other locations will include
Ellisville, Florissant and Fairview
Heights, IL. Please contact us for the

you would like to volunteer to help. We'll
have our adorable and beautiful Samoyeds with us and they love meeting new
people.
Once again families from near and
far, and their Samoyeds, converged on Grove number 4 to celebrate second chances. This annual

with friends (2 and 4 legged) is just
what any doctor would order at a
time when our daily lives are filled
with hectic schedules and concern
for what our great nation is currently experiencing. We needed to
step away from all these troubling
times to recharge, refocus and remind ourselves of how fortunate
each of us really is and to remind

I can’t think of a more tranquil way
to relax and reflect than to enjoy the
spirit of Sam O Rama. Nothing can
top the beauty of nature and a
chance to scratch or hug a gorgeous Samoyed!
It was a glorious, yet very humbling,
feeling to look around the grove at
several dozen Samoyeds knowing
the greater percentage of these
Samoyeds are alive today, and very
much loved by new families, as a
direct result of NISA’s TEAM efforts.
Sam O Rama is an annual fundraiser to help other homeless
Samoyeds who may find themselves at deaths door in the future.
