GYMBODY PLUS Toning Belt Your toning belt has been ergonomically designed. It is a unisex belt and is fastened around your waist, under your clothes, during use. The belt fits waist sizes 24”to 47” / 61-119cm. 2. Attachment pin This connects the unit to the toning belt. The pin must be fully inserted into the bottom of the unit. 3. GYMBODY PLUS Unit Your unit generates signals which are sent, via the belt and pads, to your muscles to make them contract. 4. Adhesive Pads Pack of 3 adhesive pads. Your adhesive pads are placed onto your toning belt before use. When you wrap the belt around your waist these pads must be in contact with your skin so that signals can be sent to your muscles. 5. Batteries Pack of 3 batteries (AAA 1.5V). These must be inserted into your unit for it to work. 6. Quick Start Guide This is an additional guide that you can use to help get you started. 7. Instruction Manual This is your detailed guide to using your GYMBODY PLUS. 3 Gymbody Plus IM_Layout 1 14/04/2011 09:52 Page 6 s e t t i n g u p yo u r Section 2 shows you how to set up your GYMBODY PLUS before using it for the first time. When you switch the unit on, it will be set at programme 1. To change to programme 2, just press this button. The battery cover must be closed before you switch the unit on. Step 2 – Connect the unit FULLY to the toning belt. Remove the belt from the pack and lay it down so that the yellow stitching on the belt is facing you. The unit and belt need to be connected together fully for your GYMBODY PLUS to work. Unit Controls - Lights IMPORTANT: When referring to the lights in this manual, you should be viewing the unit from above with the belt around your waist. In this way, the programme light is on the left and the power light is on the right. ! Connect your unit to the belt using the attachment pin found on the belt. Push the unit down onto the pin. Make sure you push the unit fully onto the pin or else your toning belt will not work – this is a safety feature. IMPORTANT: (iii) Programme Light (ii) Intensity Lights (i) Power Light (i). Power Light: The green power light is directly above the on/off button, which controls it. This light glows to indicate that your unit is switched on and ready to use. This light remains on for the duration of the programme (unless the unit is paused, when it will flash). (ii). Intensity Lights: There are three yellow intensity lights. They display information about various aspects of your unit’s operation. (iii). Programme Light: The green programme light is directly above the programme button. It glows when programme 2 is selected and goes off again when you switch back to programme 1. The programme light also indicates low battery power by flashing. Now that you are familiar with the different parts, you can begin to set up your unit. Section 2 will explain how. 4 5 Gymbody Plus IM_Layout 1 14/04/2011 09:53 Page 8 Turn the belt over so that the 3 silver studs are facing upwards. You will find a packet of 3 adhesive pads in your GYMBODY PLUS pack. There is 1 large square pad and 2 smaller oval pads. The two sides of the pads are different, one side has a grid pattern on it while the other side is black. Step 4 – Remove the covers from the black side of the pads. Remove the large covers from the black side of all 3 pads. Do not throw these covers away as you will need to put them back onto the pads at the end of your session. English Step 3 – Remove the covers from the patterned side of the pads and place the pads on the belt. Patterned Side These pads must be placed on the belt. (i) Remove the covers from the patterned side of the large square pad. (ii) Place the patterned side of the pad down firmly over the middle stud and between the white lines as shown. NOTE: (iii) Now remove the covers from the patterned side of the 2 smaller oval pads. + (iv) Place the smaller pads (patterned side down) firmly onto the belt, one pad each side of the large pad. You should only use SLENDERTONE pads with your GYMBODY PLUS unit. Step 5 – Position the belt on your body. Wrap the belt around your waist so that the pads are pressed firmly against your skin (a), positioning the large square pad over your navel (belly button). Stretch the ends of the belt around your waist until the small pads are between your hip bone and ribs on either side of your body (b). Fasten the belt tightly around your waist using the strap, but not so tight as to cause discomfort. The pads are waterbased, so you may find that they are cool when placed on your skin. (v) The location of the smaller pads depends on your waist size. In the example below, the user places the smaller pads in the location nearest to the central pad. This is because their waist size is between 24” and 30”. Use the guidelines below to help you choose the correct pad location. Before you progress, make sure that all 3 silver studs are fully covered by the pads. For waist sizes 38”-47” /98cm- 119cm For waist sizes 30”-38” /76cm- 98cm For waist sizes 24”-30” /61cm- 76cm 6 (a) (b) 7 Step 3 – Throughout your toning session try to increase the toning intensity by holding down the increase intensity button ( ). The intensity lights will indicate that the toning intensity is increas increasing. You will feel the muscle contractions getting stronger. yo u r f i r st to n i n g s e s s i o n Section 3 explains how to use your GYMBODY PLUS once you are set up. Muscle toning can be an unusual, but pleasant sensation. It may tickle to begin with. This progresses to a smooth muscle contraction as the toning intensity increases. The abdominal muscles contract and tighten. To get started, follow these simple steps. Power Light Step 2 – To begin toning, press and hold the increase intensity button ( ). Hold this button down until you feel your muscles contracting. Choose a toning level where you feel a strong but comfortable contraction. This will vary from person to person so set a level that suits you. The first intensity light will come on as you begin to increase the toning level. If for any reason you wish to pause the session before it is finished, simply press the on/off button briefly. The power light will begin flashing to indicate the programme has been paused. To resume the session, press the on/off button again. The power light should stop flashing and remain lit to indicate the unit is unpaused. Power Light flashes when unit is paused Step 4 – Session Over - At the end of the toning session, your GYMBODY PLUS will switch off automatically and the power light will go off. To turn off your unit at any time, press and hold the on/off button for two seconds. You should see all the lights turn off. Intensity Lights Intensity Lights: The yellow intensity lights indicate your toning intensity level. Different lights will glow during each contraction phase and go off during each relaxation phase in the following sequence: Session over - all lights off Step 5 – Take off your toning belt and lay it down on a flat surface. Put the covers back on the pads. Store your GYMBODY PLUS safely until your next session. 1st intensity light glows when the toning intensity is 1-25%. 2nd intensity light glows when the toning intensity is 26-50%. 3rd intensity light glows when the toning intensity is 51-75%. All intensity lights glow when the toning intensity is 76-99%. When the toning intensity reaches 100%, all three intensity lights will go off and the unit will stop contracting for a few seconds. The programme will then continue as normal, with all three lights glowing during each contraction phase and going off during each relaxation phase. NOTE: We recommend that you do 5 toning sessions a week to see results. You should leave a minimum of 6 hours between toning sessions. Well done on completing your first toning session. 8 9 g e t t i n g r e s u lt s w i t h yo u r GYMBODY PLUS Section 4 provides guidelines for getting the best results as well as some detailed unit information. 5. Use your toning belt whenever it suits you. You can use your GYMBODY PLUS almost any time and any place. You can use it at home while watching television, working at a desk or in the garden or walking outdoors. Your GYMBODY PLUS really is a convenient way of toning your abs. 1. Use your toning belt 5 times a week. (Leave at least of 6 hours between sessions.) 2. Use the strongest toning intensity you can – the harder you work your muscles, the better the results you will see but remember – stimulation should never be uncomfortable. 3. Use your toning belt as part of a healthy lifestyle. Improve your diet and try to increase the amount of exercise you do. 4. Your GYMBODY PLUS has 2 toning programmes, programme 1- beginner and programme 2-advanced. We recommend that you start on programme 1 and progress to programme 2 after 4 weeks. When you switch on your unit, it will automatically be set to programme 1. 6. Track your progress using a diary. Fill in a diary every time you do a toning session – see the example below. Remember – you should aim to do 5 toning sessions each week. Put this diary somewhere you will see it regularly. This will help to motivate you to reach your goal. You will soon see and feel that your ab muscles are firmer and more toned. In this example the user has completed 5 toning sessions in a week. When the Power Light and the Programme Light are on, Programme 2 selected. Programme 2 is longer than programme 1 which means your muscles will be worked for a more sustained period of time. The table below gives you information about the 2 toning programmes. Programme Name Duration Toning Power Recommended Usage 1. Beginner 25 minutes Strong Use for the first 4 weeks 2. Advanced 40 minutes Strong Use from week 5 onwards Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Sample Week When the Power Light is on and the Programme Light is off, Programme 1 selected. You can change the toning programme by pressing the programme button. The power light and the programme light will glow when programme 2 is selected. Always follow the instructions on the label when washing the belt. Never machine wash your belt. Always hand wash it in lukewarm water. This protects the internal wiring from damage in the washing machine. You should take care even when hand washing and never wring the belt to remove water. Do not use any bleach when washing your belt. Both programmes have “warm-up” and “warm-down” phases. The warm-up gets your muscles ready for the stronger part of the session, whereas the warm-down relaxes them again as the session is finishing – as you would when exercising. note: If you press the programme button during a session, the signal will stop, the intensity will return to zero and the programme will change. You will then need to increase the intensity again. Do not dry clean your belt. Do not tumble dry your belt. Dry the belt on a flat surface. Do not dry it over anything hot (e.g. a radiator) as the belt contains belt contains plastic parts. Ensure the belt is completely dry before using it again. The belt should not be ironed. 10 11 Gymbody Plus IM_Layout 1 14/04/2011 09:53 Page 14 Section 5 has two parts. Part 1 answers the questions frequently asked about ab toning. Part 2 is a quick guide which can be used if you are having problems setting up or using your ab toner. help part 1 - frequently asked questions Can I use my GYMBODY PLUS for post natal exercise? • Yes, but you must wait a minimum of 6 weeks after childbirth before you begin using it - and you must consult your doctor first. • If you have had a Caesarean in the past three months, consult your doctor for approval before using your belt. The stimulation is uncomfortable. How can I improve this? • Make sure the pads are positioned correctly and that they are pressed firmly against your skin – see page 7. Switch off your unit and reposition the belt as described in the set up section. • You can also smear a few drops of water on the black surface of the pads, but be careful not to get water on the unit. This can improve the comfort of the muscle stimulation. Ensure the unit is switched OFF before you do this! • Make sure the metal studs are fully covered by the pads. I can feel a tingling sensation in my legs during an exercise. What should I do? • This indicates that the pads are over your hip bone. Moving the two smaller pads upwards and inwards on your waist (i.e. towards the centre of your body) should prevent this. Remember to pause or switch off your GYMBODY PLUS before adjusting the belt or pads. Will the product cause muscle soreness? • As with all exercise some muscle soreness can occur after using the belt. This is normal and should go away after a day or two. Use a low toning intensity for a few sessions if you are experiencing muscle soreness. How do I know when to replace the pads? • With time the pads pick up skin debris and may need to be replaced as this makes the stimulation less effective and less comfortable. • You may notice the signal is weakening even if the batteries are OK. This usually indicates that the pads are wearing and will soon need replacing. You can check this by first adjusting the belt to ensure correct positioning of the pads. If the problem persists, try using the unit with new batteries. If the signal is still weak or uncomfortable, you should order new pads. • New pads can be purchased online at www.slendertone.com or from the careline : Ireland - 1890 92 33 33 / UK - 0845 070 77 77 or from your local SLENDERTONE retailer. Can I use GYMBODY PLUS to treat muscles weakened from lack of use due to injury? • Yes. GYMBODY PLUS may be used for the alleviation of or compensation for injury. If the right intensity light flashes (nearest the power light) while the middle intensity light is lit, there is a problem with the right pad. Section 6 explains the science behind muscle toning technology. How does muscle stimulation technology work? English h ow d o e s m u s c l e st i m u l at i o n t ec h n o lo gy wo r k ? The GYMBODY PLUS uses electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) technology. This technology has been used in hospitals and by physiotherapists for over 30 years. Here is a summary of how EMS technology works. The special 3 pad design ensures that all of the abdominal muscles contract and not only those directly under the pads. Flashing If the left intensity light (nearest the programme light) is flashing while the middle light is lit, there is a problem with the left pad. Flashing If both the left and right intensity lights are flashing while the middle light remains lit, there is a problem with either the middle pad or all three pads. Step 1 Signals are sent between the pads GYMBODY PLUS Flashing battery power When your battery power is low and the battery needs replacing, the programme light will begin flashing during a session. Step 2 The signals switch on the nerves which control the abdominal muscles. Step 3 The nerves in turn switch on the muscles. has all the components of an effective abdominal toner. 1. Your unit has 14uC (micro coulombs) of toning power. This allows you to generate strong, effective muscle contractions! 2. Your GYMBODY PLUS uses large medical grade pads. This ensures the contractions are comfortable. 3. Your toning belt has been clinically tested and is proven to give you results – these are - A firmer, flatter stomach, - More toned ab muscles, - Stronger abs 4. There are two programmes which cater for a range of training levels from the beginner to advanced users. Your toning belt will not help you lose weight. For this you need to do some form of cardiovascular exercise e.g. walking, cycling, swimming, jogging. However using your toning belt regularly will give you firmer, flatter abs, a better body shape and your clothes will fit better. Flashing error messages Product Warranty In the unlikely case of your unit developing a problem, this will be displayed by the programme light and all three intensity lights flashing in unison. If this occurs, you should switch the unit off and then switch it back on again. It should now operate properly. If the problem persists, please call the careline for further assistance UK - 0845 070 77 77 : Ireland - 1890 92 33 33 or e-mail [email protected]. Should your unit develop a fault within two years of purchase, SLENDERTONE will undertake to replace or repair the unit or any parts found to be defective with no charge for labor or materials *, provided the unit: - Has been used for its intended purpose and in the manner described in this user manual. - Has not been connected to an unsuitable power source. - Has not been subjected to misuse or neglect. - Has not been modified or repaired by anyone other than an approved SLENDERTONE agent. Flashing 14 This guarantee complements existing national guarantee obligations and does not affect your statutory rights as a consumer. * This excludes consumables (e.g. pads, belt, etc) which are subject to normal wear and tear. 15 dos & don’ts t ec h n i c a l s pec i fc at i o n s Section 7 lists the important information which must be read before using your toning belt. Section 8 is where you will find advanced technical information on your GYMBODY PLUS. Your GYMBODY PLUS product is suitable for use by all healthy adults. However, as with other forms of exercise, some care is needed when using it, so always follow the points below and read your user manual carefully before use. Some of the points below are gender specific. Please do not use if: • You have an electronic implant (e.g. cardiac pacemaker, defibrillator) or suffer from any other heart problem. • You are pregnant. • You suffer from cancer, epilepsy or are under medical supervision for cognitive dysfunction. • The unit is in close proximity (e.g. 1m) to shortwave or microwave therapy equipment. • You are connected to high-frequency surgical equipment. • Wearing the device necessitates placement over areas at which drugs/medicines are administered by injection (short term or long term) e.g. hormone treatment. Please wait before using your GYMBODY PLUS product until: • At least six weeks after the birth of your baby (you must consult your doctor first). • One month after an IUD contraceptive device (e.g. coil) has been fitted. • At least three months after having a Caesarean (you must consult your doctor first). • The heavy days of your period have finished. Please get your doctor’s or physiotherapist’s permission before using your GYMBODY PLUS product if: • You wish to use a SLENDERTONE belt and have a bad back. You should also ensure the intensity is kept low. • You have any serious illness or injury not mentioned in this guide. • You have recently had an operation. • You take insulin for diabetes. • You want to use it on a young child. • You suffer from muscle or joint problems. • Using the device as part of a rehabilitation programme. Possible adverse reactions: • A small number of isolated skin reactions have been reported by people using muscle stimulation devices, including allergies, a prolonged reddening of the skin and acne. To reposition pads during a session: • Always pause the programme that is running, unfasten the belt and then refasten it behind your back once the position of the pads has been adjusted. After strenuous exercise or exertion: • Always use a lower toning intensity to avoid muscle fatigue. Contact the careline if: • Your unit is not working correctly. Do not use it in the meantime. • You experience any irritation, skin reaction, hypersensitivity or other adverse reaction. You should, however, note that some reddening of the skin can appear under the belt during and for a short time after a session. Note: • An effective treatment should not cause undue discomfort. Important: • Keep your unit out of the reach of children. • The studs and pads must not be connected to other objects. • Do not use your unit at the same time as any other device which transfers an electrical current into the body (e.g. another muscle stimulator). • Cease using your unit if you are feeling light headed or faint. Consult your doctor if this happens. • Do not touch the pads or metal studs while the unit is switched on. • Do not use while driving, operating machinery or cycling. • For first time users, muscle stimulation can be an unusual sensation. We recommend that you begin with low stimulation intensities to familiarise yourself with the sensation before progressing to higher stimulation intensities. • For hygiene reasons this device is for use only by one person. Do not share your belt with anyone else. • Do not over exert yourself when using muscle stimulation. Any workout should be at a level comfortable for you. • Do not use your unit if you are wearing a belly-button ring. Remove the ring before you begin a session. • Your abdominal unit should not be used with a garment from any other product. Doing so may result in a unbalanced stimulation and an inefficient toning session. • SLENDERTONE will not accept responsibility if the guidelines and instructions supplied with this unit are not followed. When applying the pads and belt, always remember to : • Place the pads and belt ONLY on the abdomen, as indicated in this manual. • Avoid placing the pads or belt on the front or sides of the neck, across or through the heart (i.e. one pad on the front of the chest and one on the back), in the genital region or on the head. (Other toning units are available for other areas of the body - details are available at www.slendertone.com or from your local retailer) • Avoid any recent scars, broken or inflamed skin, areas of infection or susceptibility to acne, thrombosis or other vascular problems (e.g. varicose veins), or any parts of the body where feeling is limited. • Avoid areas of injury or restricted movement (e.g. fractures N.B. If you are in any doubt about using your SLENDERTONE or sprains). Belt for any reason, please consult your doctor before use. • Avoid placing the pads directly over metal implants. 16 Caring for your unit Your unit should not be allowed to get wet or be left in excessive sunlight.
