This time of year typically brings with it the renewed spirit of optimism, great expectations and enthusiasm. 2012 is off to a great start here at the Chamber and we trust it is for you as well! Coach Willie Fritz, his team, coaching staff Carol Smith. and support personnel are to be highly complimented for their awesome football season, and the great job they did of representing SHSU and its surrounding community!! We couldn’t be more proud. As I worked with the Chamber Execs in both Frisco and Fargo, ND, it was with great pride that I described what awesome communities we have here in Walker County! After a busy day working with these folks and others, it was wonderful to walk into the NYCO Hotel Friday evening for the BearKat pep rally. Arriving a bit early (or so I thought), we met a large group of BearKat fans already there and celebrating. Within the hour, the hotel lobby and court yard were packed with even more fans, full of electricity, passion and pride for “our BearKats”! As the band arrived and began to play, the enthusiasm picked up to a fevered pitch, I doubt another person could have squeezed into that hotel! It was an honor and privilege to represent our community in Frisco along with so many devoted fans!! You will notice several new things at the Chamber this year…you will see all our Chamber Board members and program of work featured in the center section of this publication. The chamber board’s first meeting of the new year is set for January 19 with Tommy Stewart presiding as the 2012 Board Chair. It is exciting to work with Tommy and the board as they are all strong leaders and are committed to helping make this community the best it can be. Tommy plans to move the board forward this year to greater involvement with tourism and economic development, and we look forward to continuing visiting and serving our membership. Our members are the heart, soul and voice of this community, and we want to hear from you. As the board leadership is transferred, it is only fitting that we recognize Paul Davidhizar and the phenomenal job he did in leading the Chamber during 2011. Paul, as the Alpha Omega Headmaster, was and continues to be a wonderful chamber supporter as we move forward with expanding our member services. He and wife Nancy have been two very devoted Chamber Ambassadors this past year. Paul has served on the Chamber Board of Directors since 2007 in various positions. Under Paul’s leadership the Chamber provided great services for its members, held an outstanding marketing event at Trade Expo, promoted tourism and the economy with Fair on the Square, continued a tremendous new event (Diva Night), and hosted a wonderful celebration at the annual Gala…so, a heartfelt thanks to Paul for his direction and leadership during the 77th anniversary year! Please allow me to use this column to say how very humbled and honored I am to continue serving the membership as the Chamber President. I am committed to continuing to build on the strong foundation presently at the chamber and helping move this community forward in a positive manner. The committed staff at the Chamber is the best to be found anywhere!! They are constantly working for the continued betterment of this organization and community. So, to Shannon, Chris, Susie and Laura… you all are the best and the Chamber is so fortunate to have each of you… GO TEAM!! In closing, we extend our very best wishes for 2012. May your new year be filled with happiness and prosperity! Working together is the key to accomplishing goals and dreams of this community!! We are looking forward to a busy and productive year in working with our membership. Please drop by for a visit soon!! Best Regards, Carol Smith, YOUR President NEW CHAMBER MEMBERS as of JANUARY 12, 2012 The following businesses recently joined the Chamber and we extend A WARM CHAMBER WELCOME. The information printed was gained from membership applications. For any additions and/or corrections, contact the Chamber as complete membership information is vital to your records with us. Our most recent new members we welcome: Thoughts from the 2012 Chairman of the Board — Tommy Stewart First, let’s say, “Happy New Year”! Next, let’s follow with “Wow”! What a great year 2011 was for the chamber, the staff, the board and most important of all, the members. Every event of 2011 set a record with both attendance and support. None of us individually can take credit for this achievement but what a great opportunity to thank everyone for their efforts and what turned out to be a fantastic year. As we look forward, let’s continue to build on this momentum. There are new board members and officers in place, all of which seem excited, willing and anxious to serve. They are committed to serve not only the chamber and the membership but the entire Huntsville-Walker County community. Isn’t that what it should all be about for each of us? As business owners, we all strive to deliver outstanding customer service. By doing so, we are able to set ourselves and our businesses apart from the competition. I would like to suggest that with the start of this new year, we apply that strategy to “our” chamber. As we provide service to the chamber members, who in fact are the customers of the chamber, we are all growing that relationship for a stronger organization. Then as the chamber services the needs of the community, it will build and develop a local bond that is able to promote the entire Huntsville–Walker County area. As members, we are all ambassadors of the chamber and share a unique opportunity to serve our community. This is a very exciting time to serve our community and see opportunities for growth and economic development that can happen almost daily. Let’s be part of it! All the best!! Chamber Board Planning Retreat Like most businesses, there are five important questions the Chamber Board must address: What is our mission? Who is our customer? What does the customer consider value? What have been our results? What is our plan? These are just a few of the topics addressed recently at the annual Planning Retreat for the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber Board members. On January 10 and 11, Board members were motivated by special presentations by Ms. Janice Willett (Director of Institutional Parole Operations for Texas Board of Pardons/Paroles) and Dr. Steve Johnson (HISD Superintendent). Willett spoke on strategic planning and its importance to an organization, and Dr. Johnson’s presentation centered on “change leadership”. Planning and discussion was led by the 2012 Board Chairman Tommy Stewart (Wells Fargo Advisors) and Paul Davidhizar (Alpha Omega), 2011 Board Chair, now serving as Immediate Past Chair. Joining these gentlemen on the leadership team for 2012 are Secretary/Treasurer John Hendricks (American Bank), Vice Chairs Michelle Spencer (Boys and Girls Club), Jim Hodges (HBI), Cindy Pierce (Heartfield Florist and chair elect for 2013), John Cole (John Cole Insurance), and Frankie McCaffety (McCaffety Electric).
